La Jolla Shores has an abundance of restaurants ranging from Mexican to Italian and even Japanese. My niece was visiting with her bf to La Jolla and they were kayaking by the cove from La Jollaa shore so I decided we should have dinner here for sunset views. I had the pleasure of the first one to meet her bf (even before the Parents). Although a hotel restaurant, its also a nice place by the beach. The menu is mixed and has plenty of options. Prices are fairly high but its not a place I would necessarily visit every week. As mentioned, this is literally on the beach. Both of my guests ordered the tacos , one ordering fish and the other Al pastor and the plates were cleaned, College students with a healthy appetite after kayaking. I ordered the ribeye. The steak was great but the chilaquiles/nachos were under the steak and got a bit softer. The service was great and we talked about her parents and about plans post Colleg (both are Seniors). Overall this was a wonderful choice, great view during dinner, company with my niece without other family. My nieces and nephews are all grown up. This is the youngest one. I was hesitant to go to 4 Shore due to island rumors stating a steak was $140! Not our vibe!! But we went on day 12 of their opening and I was very pleased! I had a Negroni while my husband started with the Bonjourno Adios and they were lovely. The stemware has a thin rim (which I loooove!). The food was surprising for the price! Elevated? Yes! Delicious? Yes! Enough? Yes! We sat at the bar and had great conversation with the bartenders that are attentive and kind young adults. The place is SMALL and dark! So we had to use our phone lights to read the menu. But the burrata was surprising with tomatoes and grapes! The risotto was creamy with a lemon zest. The crudo was tender with savory drizzle. I decided to come here for the dining view of course. The restaurant is located inside of a hotel. Tip: plan ahead and avoid the expensive underground parking. It would be $25 total with to park underground. For dinner, got the Baja burger and the Shores burger. The Baja burger has pico de Gallo, avocado (mine was missing at first), poblano pepper, and pepper Jack cheese. I thought it was real good it was juicy, perfectly cooked medium rare, and dripping with flavor. The fries were sub par regular shoe string fries. I'd recommend the onion rings. The Shores burger was good and cooked perfectly yet bland. The onion rings ir came with were pretty good. They were large in size and crispy. The service was friendly even though they were busy. $180 for 7 crappy drinks and a shockingly uncomfortable experience. Horrible experience with the manager. After waiting at the host stand the manager walked up and I said "I'd like to order several drinks for the pool", but instead of taking the order and bringing items to the group as we'd done several times that day he said "go to the bar and you can carry them over". I ordered 8 drinks, the bartender placed them all in front of me and after I paid I asked if I could use a tray or if anyone was available to help carry them. He ignored me, a nice guy next to me jumped up to help. Finally got settled and the manager comes huffing over "you can't have glass out here". I apologized and reminded him I told him, the bartender and another staff member several times I was ordering for the pool. He said he'd bring plastic cups. We agreed, then asked about the drinks with tajin on rim, garnishes and a drink that was layered. He looked at me disgusted, annoyed and walked off. He brought plastic cups and told us we had to transfer $150+ (inc tip) of full drinks we hadn't touched yet, no offer to help or remake. Several spilled including a full spicy marg. Manager didn't offer to remake. Then we realized we were missing a cosmo for my mom. I told him, he said "you have to pay for it" and I said "I'm sure I ordered it". He asked me several more times like he thought I was lying. When he came back I had just started holding my newborn niece and she was a bit fussy so I was standing up calming her down. He walked up, waved the original receipt in my face, which wasn't itemized only the $130 total before tip, and said "you didn't pay for it you need to pay now" then waved a $17 bill in my face. This was so uncomfortable, the baby's crying louder so I didn't want to argue and I said "I can't grab my wallet at the moment" (over baby's cries and spilled drinks below me) "I'll come into the bar and pay shortly". He told me "no you need to pay now". Never in my life... several people in the group have worked in bars and restaurants, consensus was this situation definitely warranted something to make it right, but we didn't want to ask up to this point. I finally mentioned all the issues and said "I really think you should comp my moms cosmo at this point, I'm sure I ordered and paid already but even if not a marg spilled when you forced us to transfer everything" and he again looked at me disgusted, said no and motioned his paypad towards me (and my sweet, crying niece). A friend jumped up to pay. At first we were just so confused by how everything happened, but it's been a day or two and I'm very unhappy with how he treated me. read more

Hubby ordered the hamburger that looked delicious but he asked for no sauce and they served it with the sauce so he had to get new bun! I love this restaurant with beautiful views and an opportunity to go for a long walk on the beach after a meal. The bushes have been removed in front of the restaurant and now there are two areas for outdoor seating! You can even play corn hole! Sometimes there is wait service, sometimes not (in outdoor area). The staff is very friendly and they do a great job. I don't know what happened, but the food quality started going downhill at the end of summer. The menu changed and so did the food, not in a good way. We don't want to give up on this restaurant because we love it so much. I hope they make the menu/food better because there is stiff competition in La Jolla. We stopped in for breakfast this morning, the meat in the burrito was poor quality. Very disappointing. Our visit to the Shores Restaurant was probably one of the best meals I had while in San Diego. We came here with a huge group of family, and although it was pretty quiet for a Monday afternoon, our service was handled with grace and was quick. This place has a seriously beautiful view of the beach, as it sits right by it. I spent the short time in between waiting for my food by looking out at a surf class going on outside of the window. I love me a good Cali burrito, and you can only expect it to be even better in California itself. It was probably one of the best I've had! They also had a great cocktail list - their sangrias were a favorite at our table. What a great experience at the Shores! I have been to this restaurant a few times for special occasions but this past visit was wonderful! We sat outside on the lawn- highly recommend. The difference this time, was our service from our waitress, Buya. It really stood out and made our lunch memorable. She was so sweet, professional and attentive. There was a new menu so we asked for recommendations and she knew exactly what to recommend- everything we ordered was delicious! We had pancakes, fish tacos, the breakfast burrito and the fries to start. Also the honey latte and wine suggestions were spot on. When we first arrived, it seemed like the entire lawn patio filled up at the same time which I thought could impede our service, but it didn't at all. Buya was calm, all smiles, and didn't rush us out. We were all so impressed as it was really busy. Thank you so much. Parking is a bit challenging in the area so prepared to walk a few blocks at most since it's located beachside and along a closed off street that was converted to outdoor dining and pedestrian access. Don't come here if you're hungry or else you'll be left starving for over 40 minutes before you get your food. And when your food comes, it will either be incorrect or tasteless. There are a lot of employees and most of them stand around conversing with each other instead of tending to the tables. If seated outside, expect lots of flies. What was supposed to be celebrating my mom's birthday dinner turned into an odd experience and a place I'll never return. From an innocent incorrect drink that shouldn't be an issue (which 3 staff members came over to ask about telling me I was wrong) to pouring water in my moms cocktail and not correcting it ruined a very nice birthday dinner. We left very unpleased and frustrated over things that could have easily been corrected. The staff is under trained and lacks enthusiasm to run a great restaurant. read more

The only good thing about the place was the ambiance. Gorgeous views of the beach and ocean! Perhaps we came at a bad time, but... It took 15min after being seated to get our drinks ordered. Then, 45min until our waiter returned with 1 of the drinks, and then took our food orders. It was not until another hour passed and our main arrived before the starter. When I asked our waiter how things were going, the stern response was, "We are extremely busy!" as if that's our problem. But the bar was empty, more than half the tables were empty, and half the wait staff was not doing anything. Not sure what was holding up the kitkitchen. When the food finally arrived, it was luke warm. Bottom line, this place probably has seen better days, but this was definitely not it. I'm not sure if I'd ever go back just yet...but I do wish them the best and hope things change for the better. read more

This place is great, just off the beach, we sat at a lovely table outside with an umbrella for shade...I mean we were so close to the ocean we got to watch a pod of dolphins swim past. I had the muscles and a side salad and my partner had the burrito....the muscles were super fresh tasted amazing the broth had chorizo so it was slightly spicy, the burrito was really tasty and unique, there were french fries in it which tasted better than it sounds! Shores restaurant, tucked away in a 3-star hotel right on the shores of La Jolla, was an unexpected treat. I had never heard of the restaurant before, though it was easy to find: the hotel entrance has clear signage, guiding you to the far end of the first floor of the building, so that you have a direct view of the shoreline and crashing waves. The staff is attentive and helpful. The menu is quite diverse, with options ranging from salads, which you can top with protein containing add-ons like salmon, and appetizers that span fish, poultry and beef. With the help of my waitress, I selected a beef flatbread appetizer. She told me that it was a new menu item, a good-sized filling portion, and that the flatbread was topped with a Korean-BBQ style beef. My dish was exactly as she described it. The beef was so tasty, without the fatty, gelatinous streaks that are sometimes embedded in this cut of beef. The flatbread crust had a golden, slightly crispy outer edge, with a soft, perfectly baked center. The beef, a mozerella cheese, and thai-style greens, topped with sesame seeds and a mild barbeque sauce were layered over the flatbread in a way that was vibrant and visually appealing. I loved this Italian-Asian fusion dish. The flavors were so well balanced, with each bite satiating, zesty and bold. This appetizer can very well be an entree with all the flavor it packs and its size. With the spectacular food, floor-to-ceiling windows offering a direct view of the ocean, and the stellar service I have to give Shores restaurant 5 stars! read more

My wife and I used to always look at this restaurant from the beach and wonder how wonderful it must be. Well, it really disappointed. This place should be so much better than it is. Let me count the ways: * The restaurant is kind of dilapidated. Looks like it was built in the 1950's and never updated. The windows are blocked by huge structural arches. Who wants to see arches when there is an ocean view? It should be 100% windows from left to right, like all other ocean view restaurants in San Diego. Also, because the restaurant is on the ground floor, the view is not nearly what it could be. You see beach more than ocean. I found it nice but very ordinary, by San Diego standards. * The prices were high, then you have the 5% surcharge. $128 for me and my wife, and we had 1 glass of wine (shared), an appetizer (shared), a salad (my dish), fish tacos (her dish), and 1 dessert (shared). Seems like a lot but it wasn't. * The food was just ok. They have a Mexican theme to everything. My salad was absolutely drenched in dressing. The steak that came on it was soft but endlessly chewy. I had TMJ disorder before the night was over. Everything they brought us was mediocre quality and taste. The only thing that was good was the wine (Tempranillo). For the same amount of money, we could have eaten at Eddie V's, with world class ocean views and food. Won't be going back. read more

Came here for a graduation brunch on Father's Day with a larger group. However, it really wasn't all that busy which should have been a sign. We sat outside listening to a live guitar player/singer's just okay renditions of "I'm Yours" and "Hotel California". Ordered a blood orange mimosa off their brunch menu but had to ask for it twice more until my mimosa finally arrived. And they gave me a regular mimosa...because they ran out of blood orange juice between first time that I ordered and when they finally got around to making my drink. Bare in mind this is also only halfway through brunch service. When our order arrived, the waiter started serving to the wrong table which was awkward for everyone. Especially when our main waiter yelled at him for his mistake. I split a crab sandwich and fish tacos, and both were pretty underwhelming. My fish tacos came with cauliflower and massive chunks of raw jalapeño while my mother's tacos had neither of those. Fish was hot but tortilla was soggy. The crab sandwich was also soggy and the pancetta was very thick cut. Between the sad food and lackluster service, I would not come back nor recommend. read more

It was well seasoned and flavorful. The happy hour special was decently priced at $7 which was a real treat. The fries although sliced a little bigger than I preferred, they were delicious as well. The view of the ocean was nice as well. I would come back here. The service was great and I didn't have to wait a long time for my food.
