The ole James Beach spot now turned into a very Central American chic vibe. Si! Mon did an excellent job with transforming the ambiance of this place. The bar is very fun and the decor of the restaurant is very Central America beach themed. The only note on the ambiance part is it was a little louder than most restaurants, which does not bother me at all, but I know it can for some. It's also a perfect amount of dark lighting for an intimate meal in my opinion, but I did notice more than a few people using their iPhones to see their menus, which isn't great but not the restaurants fault. The drinks were fantastic. I had an espresso martini with tequila to start. I thought it was pretty strong (which isn't a bad thing lol), given the smaller glass it came in, mixed with the espresso and vanilla too. I also tried the Pulp Friction, was absolutely delicious (enough to order a few more lol). Our waitress was very attentive and helped us with the menu. We tried the Tuna Carpaccio, which was so good we ordered a second one instead of dessert. Very delicate and subtle with a perfect crunch as well. Also a nice surprise with the Aioli in between the crunch and tuna too. We ordered the bone marrow broth, which had a nice kick to it and was full bodied in the chicken and beef broth itself. One of the best plates was the Shrimp Dumplings. Very well put together and the sauce paired very well with the Coconut Rice, which was suggested by our waitress. The Jerk Ribs (Costillitas) were also fantastic. It went really well with the Jalapeno Vinegar sauce and was easy to eat, given the small bites. Our two mains were the pork belly and the hanger steak. My fiancé doesn't normally like pork belly, but it was cooked longer than usual pork belly with fatty pieces and had a beautiful crunch on top. You also were able to wrap it in lettuce with cilantro and onion toppings, along with a light coconut vinegar sauce. This plate came with a decent size portion too and had a very warm farm to table vibe. The hanger steak comes medium rare, which is usually not my forte (no substitutions on how it's cooked), but it came out masterfully! Paired really well with a potato cream horseradish and delicious onions underneath it. Really can't say enough about our experience here. Everything was top notch: food, vibes, service. Do expect the check to be on the higher side as you need to order 6-7 plates to be shared and the drinks are the typical SM range of $18-$22. Highly recommended in the Venice area! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for so so long, and was super excited to finally be able to dive in. The evening started off super strong. Service was impeccable at the start, the drinks and the tuna tostada were the highlight of the evening, I could actually order 20 of those. The kanpachi ceviche was also relatively good, served with a side of plantain chips that were also just delightful. Unfortunately that's where the positive ends. Our servers were switched in the middle of our dining experience and the new server was not as bubbly as our previous one and came off slightly socially awkward. The Afro-Caribbean dumplings were subpar at best, and the overtly sweet coconut rice that was recommended to us to pair with did nothing to complement them. The biggest letdown was the baked oysters -- $36 before tax for six small, lukewarm oysters that felt more like an afterthought than a proper dish. Finally, the fried chicken legs. While I will admit that these were good, I will say they just didn't stand out to me, especially when it's comparable to fried chicken from a fast food chain like jollibee. Overall, there are definitely positives to this place, the vibe in general is very nice, certain small bites and drinks are impeccable, it was just unfortunate that our experience with the dishes fell short towards the end. read more

Extraordinary meal and experience! Got to celebrate my husband's birthday here. You are transported to tropical Panama instantly when you walk inside. The service was very warm and attentive. Only their limited menu was available when I went but honestly it was still pretty substantial. Everything we ordered was perfectly curated and took us on a flavor adventure. Tried the kanpachi crudo, surf clam ceviche, tuna tostada, panacotes, Afro-Caribbean dumplings, steak, coconut rice and DIY shaved ice. I can't even pick a favorite but I'd say must orders are the tuna tostada, dumplings, and the steak. The staff apologized for slow service, but honestly it was the perfect pace for us to enjoy a 2 hour meal. We also got to try a couple mocktails which were the perfect pairing to our delicious meal. checked out si! mon for the first day of domi!ngo and was super impressed with this place. one of the more original brunch menus in venice. im not sure i can enjoy another standard breakfast burrito or avocado toast after trying many delicious items on this latin american inspired menu. ive never been to this restaurant before, but as a huge fan of hatchet hall i was stoked to try it out. not only is the space beautiful, but every dish we had was fantastic. smoked fish crudite with fun accoutrements is a must, the cabbage salad was super refreshing, my friend loved the burger and 3 people in our group ordered the hojaldra and loved it. perfect jammy egg on fried bread was a treat. pupusa good as well. the sangria was lovely and we enjoyed the shaved ice dessert and coconut flan. only disappointment was they sold out of the normal priced snapper, so will have to return for that. i highly recommend their hot sauce too. looking forward to trying their dinner menu next. rock on read more

I expected the tostada to be a variation of avocado toast (as vegans are doomed with at every restaurant)... but not here! This is a rich creative flavor bomb. Tahini to glue down everything and juicy satsuma slices make this very unique. Marigolds? I don't know but I got 2. Looking forward to a heatwave so I can spend the day at the beach and escape here for daytime cocktails and more tostadas. Vegans/plant-based people: heads up there's only 3-dishes including a bowl of ice to eat and rice. Tasty though! I think the patacones (like tostones) are an option too. Gorgeous Reno. I've had plantains many times but never fried like this. The kanpachi ceviche had dehydrated plantains to scoop up the deliciousness. The fried plantains were so crispy yet fluffy. Shrimp dumplings, better than din tai fung. And the baked oysters! I usually love raw oyster and steer clear from the baked ones, but damn, this was delicious! I could taste the butter and the achiote oil that gave it a nice kick. Not one disappointing dish. Also had the uni shooters 10/10 yuca soup 10/10 and the crispy pork belly 15/10. Overall the ambience was nice (albeit a little dark..) and the server was helpful and attentive. Drinks were only ok and portions were on the smaller side. Would definitely come back with a bigger group of friends to try more items. Items ordered : ~ Yuca soup - I couldn't really eat this as I am a cilantro hater, but my bf really enjoyed it. Had a strong acidic and smokey profile. ~ Curry spiced sashimi - The spice paste (?) on top was super interesting but didn't overpower the flavor of the hamachi, which was stronger than I expected (in a good way) due to the dry aging. ~ Tuna carpaccio yuca tostada - Our favorite dish of the evening. Crispy yuca with thin layers of tuna bursting with flavor. Could have eaten more of these. ~ Afro-caribbean shrimp dumpling - I was looking forward to this dish since it's been raved about but we were quite disappointed. The food is excellent, the service is nice, and the vibe is exciting. It's a crowded, hip place so it's going to be loud, but it's manageable. We started with the tuna tostada and it will be unlike any tostada you've had before, and in a good way. Their take on it is fantastic. We followed it up with the ceviche which was good, and the shrimp dumplings and crunchy coconut rice -- which is not to be missed. The sauce for the dumplings might be the star here, ao doin't let them take it away early. Our waitress recommended the corn bollo (tamale) and that was awesome. We finished with the pork belly main which was truly outstanding. We did not have room for dessert. The drinks are wholly unusual, they use an ingredient I've never had before, so alI I'll say about that I think it's an acquired taste. I actually had a reservation here 8 months ago but my dining partner (my mom) went to the wrong restaurant accidentally. And then had a reservation that ended up not happening. So they say the third time is the charm. To drink I had the Cloud Forest Sour which was a mezcal based drink. I usually don't like Mezcal due to its smokiness but this drink was very good. But I have to be honest. The food here was so insanely good that I finished dinner and had taken maybe two sips of my cocktail. Which is rare. The uni shooter was easily the best shooter I have ever had in my life and the best dish of the night. Absolutely the stuff of legends. If YOU come to Si!mon and do not order it, I would honestly judge you. I don't usually like salads or even order them at seafood centric restaurants but the Caesar was especially good. One of the best I've had in a long time. Like unusually good for a central American restaurant but they do say the Caesar salad was invented in Mexico. So somebody told me the Tostada in the Tuna Tostada takes 3 days to make. I would also put this as another must order. I'm a sucker for tuna and knew it would be delicious. I didn't mind that they cut it in front of me like other reviews have taken exception to. And I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize the sweet corn was a tamale. Not usually a fan of tamales but this one again was exceptionally good. The perfect ratio of masa to corn and the sauce it came with was just ridiculously good. The banana leaf kanpachi was an interesting dish. I think I'm used to kanpachi sushi so don't usually have that fish cooked or have many dishes with banana leafs. It definitely had a lot of flavor but was interesting. I think I had higher expectations for it just because it was more of an "entree" - but honestly the rest of the dishes kind of stole the show more than it being a weak dish. I knew Si!mon was going to be good. It isn't cheap but I would 100% return. It is definitely one of the best seafood restaurants in Los Angeles. read more

I rarely ever visit restaurants twice so it says a lot that I decided to celebrate my birthday with dinner here! I was super excited to bring my friends to this spot. Got to try other items on the menu that I was eyeing last time and everything was delicious. Based on both my visits here it seems that all their ceviches are amazing so those are definitely must orders!! I also ordered my favorites from last time, the shrimp dumplings and the steak. This is a small plates restaurant so probably not ideal for a big group like ours as we had to get more than one order for a couple dishes so that it was enough. Another thing you can always count on at this spot is the amazing service from the waiting staff. Service at restaurants doesn't usually leave an impression on me but wow, everyone here has such great energy and made my dining experience so much better. They have recently opened up a stunning dining room with a gorgeous ceiling inspired by the art of the indigenous people from Panama. The service, food and environment have been articulately curated for an experience that is sure to be top of your list in Los Angeles. Haven't been this impressed by a restaurant in a long time. Menu was unique and innovative. So were the cocktails -- very creative. Great vibe in the space, which certainly adds to the experience. We also happened to have a waitress who was hilarious and kept us laughing. Go and try all the things, all the cocktails, you'll def have a great time. We ordered the tuna carpaccio yuca tostada (fantastic), the kanpachi ceviche (also fantastic) and the shrimp dumplings (okay; though sauce was excellent) to start (also got a side of coconut rice; it didn't have much flavor itself but was a great vehicle to sop up the remaining dumpling sauce). For our entrees we ordered the tasajo style carne en palito (very good) and the whole branzino (okay). Honestly, I was too stuffed to finish my fish, but it was by far the least flavorful things I was served so if I couldn't fit something in, I'm glad it was that. One of the best meals I have had in a long time! First, the renovation is extremely well done. It's lit perfectly and is relaxed and clean. The service was warm and unfussy. Loved the sauces and not heavy. Shrimp dumplings- server suggested to pair with the coconut rice. Do this. The sauce and the rice add to it and overall these were just a delicious bite. Banana patacones- such a great bite and use of salt. Can be heavy but nice if you want something to soak up a little of the tequila. Loved them and the sauces again, spectacular. Chicken drumsticks- perfectly cooked. Absolutely delicious Add the house made hot sauce to every dish. I am so happy this place is here. It's enjoyable and low key. Perfect for the neighborhood.
