Side Street Cafe is located in a quieter part of Bar Harbor, with a relaxed interior that was fully seated when we arrived for lunch. A friend had recommended this restaurant as having one of the best lobster rolls in Bar Harbor, so of course we had to check it out. Crab cakes ($18) - we ordered this as a starter for the table. It was solid but not the standout of the meal. Lobster roll ($45 which was market price at the time we dined) - expensive but honestly super delicious and one of the best we've had. The chunks of lobster meat are succulent and juicy. Perfectly seasoned. Generous amount of lobster given the amount of bread. If it wasn't so expensive, I could probably eat three of these in one sitting! Blueberry pie ($7.95) - the best blueberry pie we had in Bar Harbor. We got it served warm and it was heavenly. It has a sugar and lime zest crust which gave a lovely crunch. Surprisingly not too sweet, which I appreciated. I still miss this pie to this day. Service was fast and attentive. We really enjoyed our visit! Many of the restaurants in Bar Harbor are cramped for space, thus the tables are too close together, however at Side Street Cafe we had plenty of room. We were greeted immediately and taken to a table during our visit on a Tuesday at lunch. Our waiter was very nice, and helpful with our choices. My husband is allergic to gluten and they had so many options he was in a pickle on what to choose! I heard patrons at the tables around us exclaiming how good their food was, so I know it wasn't just our choices that were amazing. I had a cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. The cheeseburger was made with such quality meat, seasoned to perfection, it was great, but too big to finish. My husband had the bang, bang shrimp in gluten free macaroni and cheese. He loved it. Our baby had a quesadilla and also took some of our food. The only thing I didn't love, was the chips and queso. I like a little more kick in my queso, and this was just cheesy. This spot is OVERRATED to say the least. The three stars here represent the Excellent Server we had and the fact that there was an online wait list available. The food and hostesses however... The $35 lobster grilled cheese came on sourdough bread with to my disbelief cheap government or cheese singles type cheese food. Doubtful it was real cheese. It was also the incredibly dry. Not sure how to make a lobster grilled cheese dry, but this spot perfected the dry grilled cheese. The cup of clam chowder was most definitely canned. I'm sure I've had that brand before on a quick lunch break while working. Finally the Caesar salad was so drenched in dressing it was hard to tell, at first, that the lettuce was old. But it was definitely old. We noticed the lady next to us ordered a dinner salad. It was beautiful, but we heard her complain it was horrible and then never touch another bite. So we were saved from making the same mistake. I don't know how this spot has such good ratings. Don't eat here! Try Testa's or even Rosalie's or go up the road and eat in Northeast Harbor at Colonel's Restaurant. They use real cheese in their lobster grilled cheese, where here I'm not sure what I was served. read more

The food at side street cafe was wonderful. It looked pretty busy, but we were able to snag a table pretty quickly without a reservation. Staff was very thorough and knowledgeable about the menu as well as possible substitutions. I ordered chowder, polenta fries, and lobster mac with gluten free pasta substituted. The chowder was nice and chunky with plenty of potatoes and clams in it. I had never tried polenta fries before, but I'm definitely a fan now. They were crispy, cheesy, and had a nice creamy texture on the inside. I loved the textural contrast of these. The lobster mac had plenty of lobster in it and the cheese sauce was great. I appreciated that gluten free pasta could be substituted in this dish since many restaurants don't offer options like this. Overall we enjoyed our meals, the vibes of the restaurant, and the excellent service that we were treated to. read more

The inside was very busy and was pretty loud. I ordered an apple cider margarita, which was the margarita of the moment, and it was fantastic. The bangin shrimp on top of the Mac and cheese was really good, it was perfectly spicy. I'll start by saying we very well could have just caught a bad server, or they were having a bad day.
