I made sure to hit side street cafe because I heard rave reviews about it and all the gluten free options. I was honestly kind of disappointed, $40 for the lobster roll and a $5 upgraded if you want a side other than potato chips! The roll could have used more mayo or sauce or something, it's only available cold. The lobster melt was better, but it's hard to not taste good on warm sourdough with melt cheese. The loaded fries were pretty good but nothing crazy for $14. The food was not bad by any means, but I wouldn't not say the quality and taste justified the price.
Excellent food and service and live music in the Annex. In our two visits, we had the clam chowder, scallops, lobster melt, hamburger, prime rib sandwich, and the blueberry IPA and Lunch IPA. Everything was great. I'd also recommend you upgrade a side to the mac and cheese, which was also delicious. And leave room for their blueberry pie! Special thanks to Cynthia who provided us courteous and efficient service at the bar on our first visit and at a table on our second visit.
We weren't anticipating going to Bar Harbor this trip so I was scrambling to choose a place for our anniversary dinner. I'm so glad we found this place. Everything was delicious! I loved the mocktail. We got there a little before 5 and were sat right away. Our server was great and our food came out fast and hot.
Service was very friendly, and there was no wait to sit on the porch. Lots of cute dogs. Food was satisfying - I liked their clam chowder a lot. It had tons of clams and was not super thick. The mac and cheese was just OK. Good, but not as mind-blowing as they and their reviews suggest. The sauce was also a bit broken. The pie was delicious, as are most wild blueberry pies, although I think the filling was far better than the crust. I'd say it's pretty reliable, especially if you haven't made reservations elsewhere.
As the name suggests, the "Side Street Cafe" is one-block off Main Street in Bar Harbor, literally on a side-street. Surrounded by flowering plants upon entering you'll find d a low ceiling with rough hand hewn beams. The restaurant can be a bit loud but this is managed by open windows and outdoor seating. The hamburger is listed as a smash burger ... but it is not a true smash burger... but that doesn't diminish its taste. Very juicy and an overall great burger. The Lobster Roll was excellent. LOTS of Lobster! Buttery, fresh, and tender. My only wish is the roll could have been toasted more. Then there is the Blueberry pie. OMGOODNESS THIS WAS A HEAVENLY EXPERIENCE. I love pie and this blueberry pie was tasty with an excellent crust. Could not have been any better. When visiting Bar Harbor, forget the Main Street restaurants and go find the Side Street Cafe.
Side Street Cafe is located very close to main street on Rodick Street. It is worth the stop for any meal. We did not have any wait when we arrived which was surprising as it looked packed. We were seated on their outside deck overlooking Rodick Street. We ordered drinks, an app, and entrees. My drink was a blueberry mint lemonade l. It had a punch of tartness and was very pretty. Our app was the Rodick Street Corn. It arrived at the table smothered in the Old Bay crema but you could also taste the lime and tajin. It was delicious! For my meal, I went with the firecracker burger with candied bacon, slaw and cheddar on a country roll. It typically comes with chips but I swapped those for sweet potato fries. First of all, candied bacon? Yes, please. The surprising part was the country roll. It was the perfect pairing with the burger. I ate every last bite. The sweet potato fries were some of the best I've had. They were perfectly cooked with the right amount of salt. Overall, I highly recommend eating a meal or 2 at Side Street Cafe when you're in Bar Harbor.
This place has over 2600 reviews #worthit. I anticipated having to wait but we got there at the perfect time, they were opening up another section of the restaurant for seating. So maybe 5 minutes. Everything we ordered was fabulous, the drinks, the food, the fish, the fries, even the black bean patty. I've literally been talking about the black bean patty for days. We also had a side of Mac and cheese, yum! They also offer some molding clay to help keep the kids entertained. My aunt and uncle have been coming to Maine for a decade and said this was their favorite place to eat. Tried and true. The entry is unique, like a secret tunnel. We sat on the ground floor, it has a huge bar and some covered seating on a deck. It looks like there is a second floor as well, maybe next time we will check that portion out. A note also this place is year round open, one of the few after tourist season.
It was very very cold inside. They did turn the fan off for us, but it's still very cold. The lobster stew is delicious. It has a good amount of lobster in it & the chopped green onions in it and the flavor; the bartender's choice cocktail was guava rum punch, and the charity was the food pantry ($2)That was nice. The blueberry margarita was very limey and tart, but strong The server was very nice and attentive. The lobster mac and cheese is always a favorite. We also got a slice of blueberry pie to go, and it was delicious.
July 2025: My husband and I stopped at Side Street Cafe because we wanted to have our first Lobster Roll and Clam Chowder at a highly recommended place and this was it based on reviews. We dined outside for lunch on the patio where it was dog friendly, since we had our 10 lb dog with us. We only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for seating. The clam chowder was good and flavorful, the lobster roll was very simple and minimalist. The main focus was the fresh lobster and buttered toasted bread, not so much the condiments. I considered it a little bland for me but I love adding pepper and hot sauce to my food. lol Also, our waitress, Harmony, was very friendly and provided great service. Overall we enjoyed our lunch and would recommend stopping here for a bite to eat!
We went here to escape the main streets of Bar Harbor. That said, this side street was pretty popular. I've been to Bar Harbor over ten times and I don't remember this section of town but it was one of our favorites during this trip. Anyway, we stopped in for one reason -- blueberry pie. We also ate food and had a few beers but --- nothing really stood out as exceptional. This blueberry pie was a showstopper - I'd go so far as to say it's "G.O.A.T"ed.
Enjoyed- the mocktails, especially the raspberry one. The lobster (of course). My husband enjoyed the mac and cheese. The blueberry pie (regrettably, no pics, but it's delicious). No wait time when we went for dinner on a weeknight. Didn't like- it was very loud, even though the space wasn't full- sound just carries. It was also our most expensive meal in Maine (and I get it, Bar Harbor), but the food was just ok in comparison to some of the other meals we had for half the price.
We came to Side Street Café for dinner after exploring Bar Harbor. Ordered the Crab Dip, Brussels Sprouts, and Lazy Lobster, and Blueberry Pie. Crab Dip ($20) - This included peekytoe crab, cheeses, corn, Old Bay, and pita bread. This appetizer was recommended by our server. It was alright. There is a generous portion on dip and pita. Brussels Sprouts ($14) - This was cooked with sweet chili sauce and garnished with carrot. I think it was too saucy, so the natural taste of the vegetable was over powered. Lazy Lobster ($55) - This is supposed to include 6oz of butter poached lobster, but the portion we received was kind of small. The meat was good, but I don't think we received 6oz. The entrée came with a signature salad, corn pudding, and roasted vegetables. Honestly the corn pudding was the highlight of our dinner. It was light, spongey, and soft. Blueberry Pie ($8) - We were full after dinner, so we ended-up packing the blueberry pie to-go. The top is crusted with sugar and lime zest, and there is a generous amount of blueberry filling. read more
I loved the lobster roll feast which came with a lobster roll that had a good amount of lobster (6oz), clam chowder, and fries. It was market price which was $50. It's pricey but I was definitely full and it was a good meal. We sat outside on the patio. read more

We got the shrimp and pita as an appetizer and the burgers for lunch. Burgers aren't pictured but they are easily split between two people and not what I would consider "smash" patties. The marg of the moment was good! Overall a good lunch spot with good food! read more
We were able to grab a seat at dinner with only a few minutes wait. Inside was very busy and lively. We shared the seafood dip, brussel sprouts, and blueberry pie. The seafood dip was delicious! It was a good size to share and would be enough for a meal. I didn't love the brussel sprouts, I felt like the flavor was too charred and sweet for me to really enjoy. The blueberry pie was definitely my favorite. Not too sweet/jammy. I regret not getting a side of ice cream with the pie. read more

We came here for dinner and I liked my food very much. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and it was good, it had a delicious queso sauce which made it very memorable. I also had a Cesar salad which was ok; the dressing was overpowering. I had wings which were ok. I ordered a blueberry margarita and that margarita was delicious, I still think about it. I recommend it and this is a good place to have good barfood. read more

Three of us. We were ravenously hungry. Clocked lots of miles running, hiking, and biking and this was our only meal for the day. Very disappointed. Came here specifically because of the reviews. The Mac n Cheese is their "signature" and it's nowhere near as good as public school or Catholic school lunch; and we didn't enjoy that much. The "smash burger" is just a well done double patty regular patty. The sweet potato fries are out of a bag from stop and shop. We drank coronas and the service and music were fine, but the food was terrible. Tourist trap. Sorry, just the truth. read more

Really enjoyed the lobster roll. The lobster was tossed lightly with mayo so the lobster flavor wasn't lost. The roll had huge chunks of meat. All sandwiches come with potato chips but you can also get fries. Service was good. Sound level is moderate to loud with most of the tables full. We arrived around 5:30pm and got a table. There were quite a few tables already occupied. When we left around 6:15, there was a line. read more

To start, service was so great. Staff were really nice and I was surprised by how quick our food came out. The blueberry mint lemonade was great, and the crab dip is a necessary appetizer. The cowboy Mac and cheese and the pot belly sandwich were yummy and satisfying entrees. We loved sitting outside on a nice summer day, enjoying our food. We would definitely return. read more
Solid lobster roll for around $40. It had lots of lobster meat on top along with chips and a lemon slice. Enjoyed this along with a mocktail. The lobster melt is alright but would recommend the lobster roll for anyone visiting. There's both nice seating indoors and outdoors on the deck. The staff are very nice and attentive. read more
This place rocks!!! Expensive, but ROCKS, ONE OF THE BEST lobster rolls in New England and I've had a ton of them. This place is as good as the Neptune Oyster house in Boston and that's saying a lot. We had a great experience here during our time in Maine. My partner and I stopped for dinner before 7pm. It was pretty busy already, but luckily we were still able to get seated right away on the porch. Our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered one of the many mac and cheeses (with pulled pork, I believe) and the fish tacos. They were both delicious. Portions were generous and filling. We stopped here for dinner after exploring the area. The seating area is huge but we were placed in a nice secluded patio area. I got a clam chowder and a pulled pork sandwich with chips, both of which were quite tasty. This was a solid place for a great dinner! read more

I might have spent longer hunting for a parking spot than in the restaurant. It was worth the wait. Phil was a treat as a server and the Chicken Caprese Salad was the perfect lunch to get before exploring town. The margarita of the moment was a must have after navigating the herd of everyone from away that seemed to want to keep their parking spots forever. We stopped at this place mostly because it was our first day in bar harbor and they have a convenient parking lot (which required a payment during peak season) across the street. Oh man, this place set the bar for the rest of our visit because we kept comparing everything to our meal here. We arrived around 11:30am, right before it got busy. We were seated outside and the server was really kind. Inside looked trendy and outside had a nice cover over it in case it started raining. We ordered a lobster feast -- lobster roll, French fries, and clam chowder cup for about $48 (not sure, but it is typically mkt price). We really enjoyed it. I'm more of a warm lobster roll person and theirs are cold, but it was great. The clam chowder was amazing. Their French fries are crispy and well seasoned. We also ordered their blueberry alcoholic drink that I'm forgetting the name of but it's great. The best part was the blueberry pie!! They are generous with their portion and the top part adds a new texture because the blueberries are so soft. Typically the crust becomes soggy, but not at this place. We loved this place. We were a little floored by the overall total, but no regrets stopping here. read more

We came here after spending the day at Acadia. We arrived during happy hour (3:30 - 5:30 PM daily) and sat at the bar. Off the hh menu, my bf ordered some beer and had the chicken skewers. We also ordered the rack (ribs) & mac. The ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The place seemed family friendly. Kids were given modeling clay to keep busy with. read more
Came here just to take the blueberry pie to go. Really amazing Blueberry Pie! It was cold togo and we could have warmed it up to make it even better but couldn't wait for that. Really really good pie! Blueberry filling was abundant and nice sweet (didn't have that tarty flavor like from the pie I had had the previous or some different place), and it went perfectly well with the crust. Food: 4.5/5 | Service: 4.5/5 | Experience: 5/5 This cafe fills up quickly as it is very popular, but my party of 5 was able to get seated right after opening on the porch outside. Our server was very attentive throughout our lunch. At the end, we were able to split our bill 5 ways, which we really appreciated. I ordered the blueberry mint lemonade, the BLAT wrap, and the blueberry pie with ice cream. The lemonade was so refreshing and beautifully served - it was tart yet sweet. The wrap was also just what I needed; it was so colorful, and it was just as you'd expect a bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato wrap to be. The blueberry pie was delicious. It was warm and just lightly sweet and the crust was crispy and flaky. We ate it with the vanilla ice cream, which was such a lovely experience. read more
Best restaurant on the island! Great ambiance, service and food options for everyone. In mid May the price for a lobster roll or lobster bowl was about $42-55. The BLAT was good, lots of bacon and aoili. Try the juice bar next door for a special treat. read more

This was our "second dinner" stop for the evening. We got there around 7pm and they said it would be about a 10-15 minute wait for a table for 2 but we were seated within 5 minutes. We got the house fries, side salad, and the lobster Mac and cheese. The house fries were topped with a seasoning and had a side of chipotle Mayo. These were yummy but kind of salty. The side salad was fine, nothing too special. The lobster Mac was good but a little underwhelming. It could have used some black pepper and perhaps some hot sauce or jalepenos. The pasta was salty and cheesy! If you sit outside, you can hear the live music from next door. Overall, I think the food was a little underwhelming from the reviews I read online. read more

The service is pretty good, my server is very friendly and always carries a smile. The lobster melt is terrible and disappointing. I only taste the salty flavor of cheap cheese. Lobster roll is decent, but for $45? Over-rated, won't go just for the food read more
Had our first Bar Harbor dinner at Side Street cafe. It was conveniently located and accessible. There is street parking on the main roads but also a parking lot right across from Side Street. Parking was free after 9pm. It does get crowded so I would either recommend making a reservation or prepare to wait for a little bit. As a party of three we were seated within 10 minutes but larger groups had to wait longer. We got two pitchers of the blueberry margarita and chips and queso to start off. Anything blueberry flavored in Maine was delicious so definitely recommend. I got the portobello and black bean burger and my friends got the lobster rolls. They were listed at market price and came out to $45 each . Food was good but pricey. read more
We came by here on a Thursday for lunch. We sat outside on the patio which was pleasant. There were several well-behaved dogs enjoying outside time while their owners had lunch. Our server was personable and attentive. Our food came out very fast, which was a nice surprise. I ordered the firehouse burger with a gluten-free bun, which didn't overwhelm me. My partner ordered shrimp tacos and very much enjoyed them. The shrimp was fresh-tasting and crisp. This may be a silly thing to add, but their bathrooms were super clean! I recently visited Side Street Café for the second time ever, first in a couple years, and was it really disappointing. Having been before, I chose this as a great spot to take some out-of-town guests. Unfortunately, every other spot we visited while in town was far and above this stop. During my last visit, I had a delicious seafood mac and cheese with the seafood mixed in and great cohesive flavor. This time, I got the lobster mac and cheese (the seafood mac was no longer on the menu). What arrived was a scoop of lobster plunked on top of a small bowl of bland mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was wet (never a positive adjective to describe something that is supposed to be cheesy) and tasted predominantly of nutmeg. The whole point of lobster mac and cheese is to mix the flavors together and create a rich, delicious mixture. This did not meet the mark in the slightest. My friends' food was luckily better than mine. The lobster roll was decent and was complimented by the lime aoli. However, the lobster itself was not very flavorful. Overall, sorely disappointed and a clear downgrade since my last visit in late 2020. read more

Bottom Line: Casual atmosphere, comforting American fare and excellent service. Side Street Cafe is located in downtown Bar Harbor. It is much bigger than it looks like from outside and there is a public parking lot across the street. The menu consists of American comfort food like burgers, Mac and cheese, tacos and such. They have a full bar with local brews. Happy hour is daily, yes daily, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. My husband and I enjoyed the lobster roll and lobster grilled cheese. We were extra indulgent with a slice of the fresh blueberry pie with ice cream. We also appreciated the great service. Everyone in the restaurant whether it be families, couples or groups of friends seemed to be enjoying themselves. Overall, this was an excellent experience with a casual and comfortable atmosphere. read more

I love this place, this is my 3rd time on the island and I keep coming back here knowing dinner will be guaranteed delicious. This time around we came here 3 times in 5 days - it's seriously that good. At this point we probably tried most of the menu items and honestly everything is just so good. Our fav apps are crab dip (a must!) banging shrimp (also a must), lobster half's , Brussel sprouts. Husband had their buffalo chicken Mac and cheese and loved it. Blueberry pie deserves its own review it was honestly so delish. Drinks are excellent as well, blueberry margaritas are our favorite this time. Definitely recommend if you looking for delicious food on the island !! read more
Our server was very lovely. We sat outside on the patio and people watched. I ordered their BLT with chipotle ranch and avocado and substituted the chips for an additional $3 cup of chowder. The cowder unfortunately was a bit cold. The BLT was good, however the avocado was a bit hard. The chipotle ranch was very tasty. My boyfriend basically had the same thing but in burger form. The service was fast and good but the food wasn't the greatest. The mac and cheese wasn't super flavorful and was served to us cold. I did like the shells, but the pasta was overcooked. Definitely needed to add more salt too which is ironic because the sweet potato fries were good and crunchy but were wayyy over-salted. read more
