I used to live across the street and came a couple times many years ago but it wasn't really anything to write home about. Came for happy hour last week with a girlfriend and had a great experience! Their HH prices are great and they have a lot to choose from on their HH menu too. I got a glass of the rose which was really crisp and refreshing. We ordered the French onion press to eat and it was so good that we had to order another! I don't believe it's on their regular menu (but it definitely should be). It's basically a grilled cheese with caramelized onions that's melt in your mouth delicious. I also got the short rib taco which was also impressive. Service was great as well. Ambiance is just ok - more old school so jf you're looking for somewhere that's bright and vibey this probably isn't the spot but it's cozy and cute. This is a special place. Step inside this building, whether it's through the "side door" or into Five Crowns, and you are transported to England. You suddenly imagine it's cold outside, even if you just came from a sunny Southern California afternoon. And you get lost in the ambiance of pub life with drinks and fare that will have you salivating for more and loosening your belt. For me, it is a doubly special place because I celebrated my wedding there, first with a drink at SideDoor before the ceremony and then with dinner at Five Crowns after. Both my husband and I enjoy whiskey and SideDoor has built out a stellar collection of pours. And the staff made us feel very special and well cared for. Lawry's prime rib is great. Sides are ok. Asked for 'bleu' and server repeated 'rare' and I said again 'bleu'. A group of six 'older' i.e. all over 85....server would not take individual credit cards. Cash only and all six on one bill. Each guest had to figure what was owed and a personal tip. I love this place for the cozy bar vibes and good drinks but the food was not good. I will say the bartender had a heavy hand which I appreciate. The service is ok, I do think there is room for improvement (especially if it's not that busy.) The fish tacos on happy hour were good, but just a tad bit too salty. The seared ahi tuna was pretty tasty. I highly recommend against ordering the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail. It tasted so bad and left a really bad aftertaste. I think this kind of ruined the meal for me. I let my boyfriend finish it, but he agreed it didn't taste right. Not sure if this was a one off problem, but it's an expensive appetizer and it really was just bad. Overall you should just skip the food, maybe would stop by for a drink again. read more

SideDoor is a quaint little British style bar connected to Five Crowns. I usually come here for a drink or two while waiting for my reservation with Five Crowns. Typically I come around Christmas time so they are decorated with all the holiday decor. The ambiance is lovely. Very intimate if you're here for a date. I see other folks enjoy charcuterie boards and full meals here also. I recently came here again for my friend's birthday before our Five Crown's reservations. Erica was our bartender and she was super friendly and helpful. Most importantly for a bartender, she made amazing cocktails. We were feeling festive so we went for the holiday cocktails. For the first round of drinks my friend had the Elfin' Around ($16) and I had the Winter Wonderland ($15). We both enjoyed our drinks. I felt like my Winter Wonderland was like a creamy dessert beverage and I really enjoyed the coconut base in it. It was so good we even had a second round, since we still had a little time to spare before our reservation. My friend had the Ginger Snap ($15) which is a more festive house version of a Moscow mule. I had the Five Crowns Old Fashioned which is their house version of the old fashioned with a future cube and presented smoked. The mechanism of delivery was like the rose in Beauty and the Beast. Absolutely stunning and deliciously strong. Our seats were available a bit prior to our reservation, so we were able to close out the tab and take our beverages with us to dinner. I'll definitely come back here for my pre-dinner drinks the next time I have a reservation for Five Crowns. read more

Awesome place, with exceptional drinks and stellar customer service. The ambiance is also warm and inviting. It's more of a cozy restaurant that happens to have amazing cocktails. We arrived during the holiday season, and ordered the sweater weather (amazing hot toddy that comes in a mug that will make you take a picture) and the winter wonderland (like a horchata but less heavy with a twist). We are patrons for many years. I understand costs are rising but the price increases here are pretty steep. We usually order the delicious prime rib sandwich. Last night this $26.00 sandwich is about 3/4 the size it normally is, has about half as much meat in it and has gone up in price. Two glasses of wine and two sandwiches costs us just over $100.00. Each glass of wine was $27.00 and the sandwiches were $26.00 and $21.00. We will think twice about dining here again. Sad. Used to be our standby. read more

Cancel our VIP card, this experience was bad enough to make this our last visit. Sad to see how far the Side door has fallen. First off they got rid of their regular menu and forced a holiday "prix fixe" (what the waitress called it) menu on everyone. There was absolutely no mention of this on open table when making reservations. Also it wasn't a prix fixe at all - Just a higher priced, limited option menu with one included starter (obviously a way to gouge people during the holidays.) We got over that aspect quickly and ordered... but you'd think with a much more limited menu the food would be extra on point - but everything sorely lagged. The oysters were pathetic. Shriveled, measly, dried out flesh with no trace of liquor at all. We complained but waitress just said sorry. Duck was just ok. Salmon was totally dull and spongey, green beans were rubbery and cold. It was a very disappointing experience for a restaurant we formerly held such high regard for. Well, here we are again a year later to celebrate our anniversary. Great service and great food! Again, no 5 stars. We made reservations for last night way ahead of time. We were greeted by a very sour and unhappy hostess at the Side Door. She acted like seating us was a burden because I reserved a special booth. We were told a year ago what the table number was but apparently we were loudly berated that we had the wrong table number. I explained that we wanted the specific table because of sentimental reasons. Her reaction and comment to us was so nasty causing another customer to noticed. From the moment you walk in, and steer to the right, the sideDoor side of the establishment (the left side is a sister restaurant, Five Crowns), you literally feel like you just teleported to Europe. And apparently you can order off either menu on either side (although we didn't because we were already eager and trying to figure out what to order from side car's menu). I loved the ambiance! We sat in the bar side at the high top tables, which were very comfortable. The inside dining area looked even cozier, like someone's living or dining room. I think there was even a fire place. Service was wonderful--I was very impressed with the knowledge and appreciation of the woman I'll call the charcuterie connoisseur, she knows her fromage! Everything we ordered was absolutely decedent and so rich. We tried the bone marrow appetizer, the cheese plate in which you curate yourself, and the prime rib (absolute must). Tonight was my first visit to Sidedoor, the pub side of the long established Lawry's Five Crowns. The casual, cozy atmosphere is complimented by the friendly stellar service. At Sidedoor, diners have access to the full higher end Five Crowns menu as well as the extensive more casual bar menu which includes burgers, sandwiches, charcuterie boards, appetizers, salads and chili made with the prime rib for which they're famous. Our waiter, Will, was fantastic; attentive, articulate and offering excellent recommendations including the banofee pie dessert. We will definitely return and ask for him! read more

They made me feel special with great service, complimentary champagne toast and a trifle strawberry dessert. -Surf and Turf $65 Which includes a salad, 6 oz prime rib, small lobster tail, creamed Spinach, or corn, or mashed potatoes and a dessert (fruit tart or ice cream sundae) We ordered the surf and turf and enjoyed feeling stuffed! SideDoor - my favourite "neighborhood pub." The service is always great, and they even accommodate my incredibly needy custom drink requests without hesitation. Their prime rib sandwich is my favourite sandwich in the world, no lie. The bread is somehow soft and crisp, but doesn't tear up the roof of your mouth the way other breads do. The horseradish that accompanies the meal is mild but adds a hint of spice and flavour. I like the entree with their homemade potato chips, but my buddy will sub French fries and they happily do that for him. My custom drink (if you're interested in trying it) consists of 1.75 oz. Liqor 43, 1.75 oz. espresso, and 0.75 Bulleit Bourbon. If you like espresso martinis, give this drink a try! read more

I have been here two times total and every time has been wonderful! But this time was exceptional! Patty was extremely attentive, friendly, personable, and helpful. The place has a nice vibe but the food is mediocre. My group of 8 ordered several of their dishes and all was just "OK". The burger seem like the meat was not seasoned. The crab cake ($24) is small, you can probably get 4 bites. The lobster roll was decent tasting but the bread is soaked in butter/oil. Honestly, I can't recommend this place. We've driven by Five Crowns/SideDoor several times and said "That place looks cool, we should try it sometime." Well we finally did last Saturday and it exceeded our expectations! We went to the gastropub side (SideDoor) which has its own menu (pub bites) in addition to the main restaurant menu for Five Crowns. The ambience is amazing! Very cozy (there was even a fire burning in the fireplace) and well-decorated. It really reminded us of the pubs in London. If the decor wasn't enough, the service was also fabulous! We had made a reservation but were 30 min late due to traffic, but the host said it was totally fine and we could sit anywhere we like. And to top it all off... the food was delicious! Three of us shared tasty cocktails plus a shrimp cocktail, truffle fries, and a fish & chips. The fries were hands down some of the best I've ever had (perfectly warm, crispy, and seasoned). We also shared a chocolate soufflé at the end, which was very decadent and baked to perfection. We can't wait to go back and try more menu items! read more

We dined at Side Door last evening and it was a disappointment. We arrived at 4:30 for our 4:30 reservation and the door was locked. When we entered numerous staff seemed disoriented and unknowing what to do with guests who entered with us. Finally we were seated. Our server struggled with our beer order, she did not seem to know what a pale ale is and offered us a light beer. Women's restroom sink does not drain properly and men's restroom smells like old sewer pipes. Charcuterie station smells and employee working that station was NOT wearing gloves. Fish & chips (our personal favorite) was very pale in color suggesting oil not hot enough or not cooked long enough. Employees look un-groomed in sloppy jeans and unkept hair. You need a manager on the floor at all times! We love this tiny gem of a restaurant! read more

We were seated at a table in the back of the restaurant. It was so nice because we got to tour the restaurant. It was gorgeous and reminded me of my time in the UK--what a perfect pub. The music was so good and at the perfect sound level. Bernardo was our waiter and he was the best! I asked if we could move near the front by the fireplace in a little nook. It was perfect and so cozy. He really cares and recommended some delicious dishes for us. We had the crab cakes which were even better than some I had in Maryland. They were perfect in every way and had a delightful salad with it that brightened the taste spectrum of the cakes. The remoulade was perfectly made and had notes of spice. I also got the Cesar salad.
