My wife and I have always loved coming to Side Door with the ambience and food. Tonight we had a last minute opportunity to get out for the night without kids and decided to head over. We walked right in and got seated right away. We had Will as our server and he absolutely made our night so much better. Will is kind, engaging, and very attentive. He took the time to explain the menu completely and also shared his knowledge of the wine menu. He brought out our food in a timely manner and stopped by to check on us frequently. We usually sit at the bar where people are so friendly, as well as the bartenders. Get there early because it gets crowded. For a change from 5 Crowns, step to the side and try SideDoor. This is a cute, cozy gastropub connected to Five Crowns. We came for happy hour but didn't realize it was only Monday - Thursday. So we will definitely be back to give it a try. We ended up getting the Prime & Proper Toastie which was four minutes prime rib sandwiches. This was great to share amongst two people. We also had the Duck wings which have a gochujang marinade. So yummy! Lastly, the Mac & Cheese was good but I could go without it next time. For martinis, I recommend the seasonal Jessica Rabbit which was like a raspberry lemon drop. Four of us dropped by SideDoor (the bar adjacent to Five Crowns) in CDM for HH. There were positives and negatives: Positives: The staff is super nice & accommodating; The mussels, burger, prime rib and fish & chips (latter two not pictured), were really good. Negatives: The HH oysters weren't that fresh; The food took a while; We ordered an avo app and fries off the HH menu. The items never arrived; The dessert we shared (not pictured) looked like a sundae. It was basically whipped cream with meringue on top and a small cookie underneath. We were not happy it cost $16; I called in advance to see if they have TNF and was told they have TVs that show TNF (I was meeting biz associates for HH on a Thu, and we wanted to watch the game). In reality, they don't have Prime, and thus no TNF; All in all, a positive experience. I look forward to visiting SideDoor and Five Crowns again in the near future. read more

We walked into SideDoor on the night before Thanksgiving. We didn't have reservations and it was crowded but we were lucky they could accommodate us. The restaurant is small and has a bar. There's a cute area by the fireplace to sit and the restaurant was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Abdallah was our server and he was great. I ordered the White Lotus cocktail which was refreshing and sweet. We ordered the wedge salad chopped to start. We had the kitchen split the salad which was an additional charge but resulted in nice portions for each of us. It was one of the best salads I've ever eaten so if you like wedge salads I'd recommend ordering it here. For entrees, we ordered the prime rib sandwich and upgraded to fries for an extra charge and the Crown cut prime rib plate. The portions were a good size and we were happy with our selections. Even though we were full, we saved room for dessert and ordered the CC Brown's hot fudge sundae. Our meal was great and the service was awesome. Side Door is definitely a good spot to go to if you're in Newport Beach. Make reservations if you can. read more

My fave place for craft cocktails. The bartenders are awesome and have creative recipes. Bar seating is limited with seating for about 8 people. They have a slightly different menu than 5 crowns. Had a delightful happy hour with my favorite relative last night at this establishment. Not only were the vibes impeccable, but the food was delightful! Felt like royalty with the wait staff. The cheese platter was delicious, the martini's crisp and the prime rib chili cheese fries were something I didn't know I needed. As an Englishman who often misses his pubs, I love Five Crowns and the SideDoor. It's a bit up-market for a pub, but it is usually worth the price and the atmosphere is second to none in all of Orange County for an authentic pub experience. The food was excellent (although my three fellow diners all ordered the prime rib and were a bit dismayed at the size--too small but bloody delicious.) I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich which was a great size and also bloody delicious. The problem I had was the service, and specifically our server. The hostess was actually great, and accommodated our group when we had a delay getting to our table. And the runners were great, knowing where each dish should be placed on the table when they brought it out. But our server... when we sat down at our table, it was about 5:45, and he took our order at around 5:50. It was happy hour for another ten minutes, and my friend and I promptly ordered two Guinnesses and let him know we'd want to order two more before 6pm. We didn't see him for twenty minutes, by which time happy hour was very much over. And he had no recollection of our request. We then ordered food: three prime rib sandwiches and the chicken sandwich, and a french onion soup. And I guess he thought he should pace out the meals, so he brought out the soup and then later asked if he should "fire up" the rest of our meals. Just a misunderstanding, but by this point we were just kind of in disbelief. Because those Guinnesses we ordered at around 6:10? Took at least thirty minutes to get those. He was pretty much just absent and absent-minded, every time he would come to the table, it was like he had no memory of who we were before that, or what we had asked him or told him. It was bad enough that it kind of soured my experience, even though everything else was great. It was just so frustrating to be in such a great restaurant with great food and great drinks, but our server was the only connection we had to that food and drink, and it was not a good connection. And I want to give a special shoutout to the valet guys who were very kind and helpful when I needed them. Top-notch guys. read more

Several years ago, while staying in Corona del Mar, when it wasn't possible to get a reservation at Five Crowns, my wife and I dined at SideDoor. We ate Kimchi Deviled Eggs; a Wedge Salad; a Prime Rib Sandwich with creamed corn; and a monster plate of Prime Rib Chili Cheese Fries, which were exactly as delicious as you think they are. Some of these items no longer appear on SideDoor's menu, but, though it's been a while, I'm confident in saying that were we in CdM at mealtime, we'd happily stop at the place again. I love all things Lawrys and thank goodness OC has Five Crowns and Side Door! We wanted something Casual but with good food and a fun atmosphere. SideDoor is definitely all of that! You can order pretty much the entire Five Crowns menu plus SideDoor food. We made reservations through Open Table and were seated promptly. Our server Patty was amazing. She gave us some history on the name and the restaurant and made some great recommendations for my friends who had never been there before. I come here often! This is a gem of a place. Always come here with my husband who is from the UK. It makes him feel like he's back home. Love the ambiance and the old feel. I hope that never changes! Drinks are great, love the 80s music. The food is a hit or miss. I think it depends what chef is working that evening. Old timey feel. Casual attire is fine. Fast and friendly service. Recommend making a reservation! While a lot of the drinks and food items are insanely expensive, they do have some more "affordable" items. I tried an ahi plate (came with crispy green beans) and the Elvis cocktail (crazy combo of bourbon, banana, PB whisky, and bacon). Everything was delicious! While those two items alone will run you around $50 after tax and tip as of Oct 2023, you know what you're getting into. I could've avoided the expensive cocktail, but the dish was one of their more budget friendly entrees, crazily enough. Gotta splurge every now and then, though! read more

I am hoping our experience last night was a one-off, but delays, poor service, and no explanation make me hesitate to return. We were seated in the back corner of Side Door, roughly on time for our reservation (they had no availability early, but we were fine to walk around and wait). After being seated, our waitress was MIA for the first 15 minutes before finally wandering over. We placed a drink order (a beer and a glass of wine) that took another 15 minutes to arrive. Despite promising to be "right back," she then disappeared for another 15 minutes (all of these times are exact). Water was never offered. In the meantime, other patrons nearby were complaining about delays, the same waitress clearly forgot to place a dessert order for another couple, and it seemed apparent waitstaff were essentially hiding in the kitchen to avoid displeased patrons. At one point, every single staff member disappeared to the kitchen for about 10 minutes. I used to live across the street and came a couple times many years ago but it wasn't really anything to write home about. Came for happy hour last week with a girlfriend and had a great experience! Their HH prices are great and they have a lot to choose from on their HH menu too. I got a glass of the rose which was really crisp and refreshing. We ordered the French onion press to eat and it was so good that we had to order another! I don't believe it's on their regular menu (but it definitely should be). It's basically a grilled cheese with caramelized onions that's melt in your mouth delicious. I also got the short rib taco which was also impressive. Service was great as well. Ambiance is just ok - more old school so jf you're looking for somewhere that's bright and vibey this probably isn't the spot but it's cozy and cute.
