I don't know how many times I've passed this place without stopping to try it, but I wish I'd done it this evening. My wife was worried just because there were no cars in the parking lot at 5:45 pm. I'll admit that's usually a reliable indicator. This was no exception. There were three in our party; two of us ordered the tapado, and the third had enchiladas suizas. There was plenty of food on each plate, but it was mostly bland and disappointing. I can't comment on any of their salsas because the chips were too stale to eat, so I didn't try the salsas. My son flew in from Oregon and wanted authentic Mexican food not Tex-Mex. This place got great reviews but when we arrived just after 6pm their sign wasn't lit up so we thought they were closed and almost went somewhere else. Sure glad we had a closer look and found they were open. Turns out they hadn't reset the timer on the signs lights which were set for 6:30pm! In a nutshell the service was great, the place was clean and nice and quiet, the restrooms were spotless (never put that in a review before!) the prices were very reasonable indeed and the food was spot on! My wife had the Tostaditas de la Casa which were three tostados on corn tortillas and packed with meat and all the trimmings. My son had the Enchiladas Rojas which was not like your average Americanized enchilada but very authentic like the ones my sons gets from his South American friends in Oregon. I tried the Tapado which came with 3 steaming corn tortillas, guacamole and salsa. Excellent! Everyone tried my smokey flavored beef and agreed it was the tastiest dish of all. They were both very pleased with their dinner and the quantity was just right. Not so much that you had to take half of it home. But the prices were just right for the portions. The husband and wife team were very pleasant and made us all fell very welcome. Definitely not going to wait for our son to return before we come back for more. read more

Being from south Texas, I am always looking for Mexican food (not TexMex). I read about Sierra Madre in a local paper and decided to try it. I am so glad I did! We placed our orders with the kind lady at the bar/register area. Sure, she might not be fluent in the King's English, but it's an authentic Mexican place, so it's not really a stretch to encounter an authentic Spanish speaker. The menu even has pictures, so those who can't sound out the name of the food can at least point and grunt. I highly recommend the tostaditos---I catch myself thinking about them more often than I'd like to admit. It's tostadas smothered in refried beans, topped with delicious steak-style beef, lettuce (not the iceberg crap, either) and crumbled queso fresco. After you order, stop by the giant bowl of homemade, self-serve tortilla chips, and then go hit the awesome salsa bar. You can't go wrong with any of the salsas! Your plates are brought to your table, you eat and enjoy, and then the nice lady picks up your plates when you are done. But the best part, aside from the wonderful food, is that you don't have to shout to be able to converse with the person sitting right beside you (like at other chain TexMex places in Cypress). read more

My parents and I tried this place while they were visiting from NY. We went solely off of reviews, which were mostly positive. Unfortunately, we did not have a 4 or 5 star experience. I would never go back. While the man that greeted us, made our food, served us, and checked us out was very personable, the food was terrible. He told us that it was an authentic Mexican restaurant, and I was excited because I thought it would be better than any chain we'd go to. Not the case. As someone else mentioned, the tortilla chips served tasted stale, the salsa was just so-so (there is a salsa bar that we weren't told about, I saw someone else go over to it so I checked it out. Wasn't very appealing). My dad got shrimp tacos, and they were very wimpy (three shrimp maybe the size of a nickel on the taco). The dishes my mom and I got were so greasy and salty, just not good. I've never had Mexican food that greasy before! All in all, none of us enjoyed our food. We left a lot on our plates, as we didn't want to take it with us. Oh....and no liquor license, so we couldn't even enjoy a margarita:( read more

This is one of the best real deal Mexican restaurants in all of Houston. The owner, Emilio, uses old family recipes that are incredible. The salsa bar is very good, however I had to ask for containers. The table I sat at while waiting for my to go order was not cleaned. First time and yes there will be a second. It is a small place so when we walked in there was only one other couple there, so you start to wonder but we quickly felt welcomed.
