Wow, I am so amazed by this place. It's definitely a hole-in-the-well restaurant, but the quality of the food is definitely 5 star. I absolutely love the self-serve banchan and they offer egg as an option!! I brought my 11 month old daughter with me and the waitresses were having so much fun with her. We had the galbi beef, seafood pancake, fried rice, jab chae, and the fried ramen noodles. All of them were so delicious! One of the best galbi beef & jab chae I had in awhile! read more

I ordered a black goat stew for a take out today and was utterly amazed at how the service and the quality of food can decline so badly after being in business for over 30 years. I used to work in the area so myself and my colleagues frequented the place about 30 years ago. Even after moving to Fremont, I visited there time to time for the black goat stew with my family. My children would have others things. Now, they've grown, they would know how to appreciate them as well, but glad they are not in the area to experience what we did today. My husband and I drove out over one hour both ways to get the stew and it would have been worth the trouble if it tasted as good as it did before. However, the taste was off and was extremely bland. We came across only four bite size pieces of meat and the rest were all skin and fat. One of the reasons I'd go all the way there is because they used to give a lot of meat. I wouldn't have gone all the way there to get bland soup with goat skins. Also, they used to give a lot of vegetables like perilla leaves but today, after cooking, only three bites and there were no more vegetables. The side dishes were the worst. I'd feel ashamed to call them Korean food. The soy bean sprout was simply blanched with perhaps some salt. That is it: no hint of sesame oil or seeds or garlic. The potatoes are the same. It was blanched and has a hint of soy sauce and sugar water sprinkled on them. None of the side dishes exhibited effort but seemed as if to nonchalantly thrown together just for the sake of having some side dishes because after all, it is a Korean restaurant. Non-Koreans, please know that the side dishes there do not represent Korean sides well. The cost is $61 total for the stew, we spent over one hour driving and the gas is probably another $10. That much we looked forward to a stew that we once knew, but it is no longer. Either the owner or cook must have changed. No more, am I going to do this. read more

Friendly service, big portions, good food. That's what you'll get at Sigoljip Korea BBQ. This is a no-nonsense place that has a big menu. Literally and figuratively. For those not familiar with Korean food, that's a good thing, since this menu is large enough to have pictures to show you what you're ordering. They have just about everything on the menu, from the chap che (glass noodles) to seafood in spicy sauce, to the ever popular tofu stew, and even a few things that I've never seen before. Quantity over quality is not a bad thing, depending on your priority at that given moment. This place had the most banchan I've ever had, and they are always quick to refill any that runs out. Since we had so much food, we had lots to take home...and they even added a free serving of rice with our takeout. Great value, acceptable taste, better than average service. read more

It must be hard to compete with all the other Korean places on El Camino Real in Santa Clara. Sigoljip is only a stone's throw from both Korea House and SGD Tofu House, two very good Korean places. There were a group of 10 of us on a Friday night, and Sigoljip was the only one that could accomodate. I realized I'd been here about two years before only after I stepped inside. Back then, I would have given the place a solid 3. They gave us our own room that seated 10 people. We originally had 8, but 10 people showed up. They quickly gave us extra settings and menus. I always worry at Korean places that they won't treat you well if you don't speak perfect Korean. This didn't seem to be the case here. The 10 of us ordered 7 dishes, including haemul pajun, sullung tang, dakgui, bulgogi, soondubu, and dukbukki. They gave us a second haemul pajun on the house, I suppose for ordering so much. The place was only about hafl full when we arrived at 730, so that might explain the quick service. Everything was decent, nothing was spectacular, but nothing was bad. We had several bottles of OB (it's like the weakest beer ever, it might as well be tea). Our table was completely laden wish bowls, dishes, plates, and chopsticks. By the end of the meal, we were completely stuffed. We still had scraps of food left over. The meal came to $16/person. Not bad at all for decent Korean food that completely stuffed us. read more

I love that it's open so late at night - til 11pm! Perfect for me and my volleyball crew that get done with our matches around 9:45pm and want to find good eats in the 'hood. We've been here for the last two weeks, and I've really enjoyed the visits each time. The dol sot bi bim bop is delicious, but I think the best dish I've had here is their seafood pancake. Each piece is packed with seafood and yummy goodness. The BBQ chicken is also very good; it's super juicy and comes out piping hot and sizzling. (Everything comes out piping hot - love it!) I'm also appreciative of fine service so late in the evening. The waitresses never made us feel rushed, and they were good about refilling our small dishes. I think I would normally give this place 4 stars, but it gets +1 for staying open so late. :-) read more

I can't say how much I appreciated the customer service at this restaurant. The waiters were friendly and took great care of us. We didn't make a reservation so, when we came in with 19 people for my friends birthday party, they were surprised. They first gave us the banchan (side dish) and the rice. They told us how just for service, they'll make a watermelon cake and fried chicken. They gave us a lot of food on top of what we ordered. I have been to many Korean restaurants in Korea Town and haven't been very satisfied by many. The quality of the food was a solid 8/10. The gamja tang was great, but the meat was slightly dry. The spicy pork was big and thick, making it a bit too much to chew. Their customer service was spot on... I can't thank them enough of how well they took care of us. After driving around for a few miles along El Camino Real, we finally chose a random place for Korean BBQ. When we stepped in, we were one of 2 parties inside the fairly large restaurant. A flat screen tv plays Korean television shows and the staff sits and reads newspaper during their off time. We had ordered a few entrees family style since we missed lunch. BBQ beef with onion, chicken, kim chee, steamed rice, soup, and a claypot. All the items were very large and I could not finish up my own plate. I told my friends they could take the rest of mines home. The food was typical but nothing really stood out for me having eaten at numerous Korean restaurants down in Los Angeles. I heard their lunch specials are much better so I will check that out in the future. Plenty of parking in front and back and they take cards. read more

Yay! I'm a fan is exactly how I feel about this nice family owned restaurant. The servers/cooks are very hospitable and are on top of your particular needs. Tea going low? Refill. More fish cake? More rice? You got it. Jop Chae on the house to whet the appetite? Yes please. The ladies here couldn't be any nicer and will remember you as to likes/dislikes and try to accomodate as best as possible. We like to order some Kal-bi or BBQ pork, Bibinaemyung and one of the soups for two and always have left over. While I think Choi's kitchen has better seafood pancake, the service there is definitely not as good, and for a quick and easy meal I prefer not the do-it yourself. Also they have great happy hours for $1.00 soju and $1.50 beer on tap, yay. I really hope this place stays open and prosperous for years to come, great lunch or after-work dinner spot. read more

Korean deliciousness! I finally came here for lunch and was so happy with the food. The price was right, and the portions were too. Each of us got the lunch specials #1 through #4. I had the #1 -- which was Korean BBQ Pork. And that was for $7.95. The lunch special comes with the melon soup, a good portion of rice, and the meat you've chosen. The banchan is always refillable, so you've got quite a few great sides to accompany your meal. My favorites are the pickled cucumbers, marinated potatoes, bean sprouts, and kim chi. I also tried the #2 -- BBQ beef and the #4 the BBQ chicken. The chicken, while tender, was not as good as the #1 and #2. The #3 short ribs also looked really good, but my co-worker was not about to give that up for me to try! So sadly, I can't review that. But since I've been here for dinner, I know the short ribs are great. All in all, good place for lunch - great value and taste! read more

It's home cooking Korean style! The people are nice, but service is kind of slow. I thought they had ayce banchan during dinner time, but it wasn't. :-( We used metal chopsticks and it came with 8 banchans (I asked for the tamago because I wanted to try it :p) : kimichi, daikon kimchi, fish cake, white jelly like cake with some black sauce on top (don't know what it's called), salad with dressing (iceberg lettuce with some white dressing...why??), tamago (but it was bland), broccoli, bean sprouts, braised potatoes (not sure in what but it was soft and had good flavor). We ordered: Bulgogi --It didn't have that nice sear to it, it seemed boiled, could of been better Seafood soup --I liked this, first time having it brought to you bubbling in it's small pot and having the lady crack an egg on to it --Seafood wasn't overcooked Spicy rice cake with ramen noodles --Someone...wanted this, so we ordered it. It was a first time eating rice cake. The flavor was nice, but I thought the rice cake was too hard or maybe Kdramas have led me to believe they're like those tight rice rolls at dim sum. Black Goat (stir fried) --The lady asked me twice if I wanted this. Um...yeah! But when it came, it was surprising on the amount of garnishes it came with it, lots of garlic, green onions, mustard leaves (?), some sort of paste like shrimp?? The taste was good, but I'm not too keen on eating so much green onions and garlic, so we just ate the meat, and after our dinner, our server told us that we should bring the rest of the garnishes home to eat because the garnishes were expensive. We brought it home and ate them the next day. Strangely, the garlic didn't make my breath smell and the garnishes had good flavor. --WARNING: they include the skin of the goat, so food might be chewy Overall: The food seems homely. A 3 star for the food. I'm bumping it up to a 4 star because they stay open until 11pm, and because of the friendly service. We had the bulgogi and the dol sot bi bim bap. Good sized portions for the price. The bulgogi was about $10.95 and the meat was tender and tasty. The bi bim bap was okay too, nothing outstanding in my opinion. Pan chans were standard with kim chi, seaweed, cucumbers (theses tasted really fresh), fish cake, etc. Dinner for two including one large OB beer was $30 pre tip. read more

Like Veda T., I also give 3.5 stars but I'll round up. Their banchan was underwhelming, but they replaced them without even asking. Despite the crowd and the Olympics being on, they were pretty efficient with their service (having the Olympics on was actually a plus!). In terms of the food, all I can say is I've had better. But they get the benefit of the doubt because they somehow managed to make a pancake with squid and other seafood that I really liked. That's a feat! Pork bulgogi was also good. Two of the Sys Admin boyz were with me and we didn't know what to eat. Viet, Japanese, Korean...YES. Korean. I'm down. I hadn't been back to Korea BBQ since my newbie experimental days circa 2000. I didn't eat anything but chicken and rice because I was scared of all the interesting and almost gross looking items called KIMCHEE. Today, I am much more open to exotic foods and eat everything and anything. I tried the Dol sot bi bim bap (beef, vegetables, and rice in hot stone pot topped with an over easy egg) Eh..not as tasty as other places. They kinda skimped me on the meat but the one thing I did like was how hot my meal was. I am big on hot food. So hot that its OK if it burns my mouth. The Kim Chee was good. My faves are the cucumbers, seaweed and the little minnows! Yup, I gobble those up like skittles! Not sure if I'll return. This place is actually called Sigoljip, which has 22 reviews of its own. I came in and tried the Yuk Kae Jang (Spicy Beef Soup) and unfortunately it's probably the least favorite of the many versions I've tried (I'm trying to be nice). The broth was super bland like another poster said, I should've listened. It could've been an anchovy broth even, and there was only the tiniest hint of spiciness. Other versions I've tried have a really bold and robust broth, this one had absolutely no depth to it. The beef and other ingredients were good but the broth was not even worth consuming. I was literally putting the sauce from the kimchi and kakkdugi into the broth. The panchan was ok, nothing special. No grills on the tables, so I don't know if I can recommend the BBQ as saving grace. I really think Oakland has better Korean food than Santa Clara now (stews and soup wise). Casserole House, Sura, Gigul Gigul all have excellent versions of Yuk Kae Jang, and you can not beat Pyung Chang for Soondubu. read more

I'm not a korean food expert but I do know what I like. I've been to a korean restaurants and I like the bibambab here the best. I wouldn't order anything else here since they're not as good as some of the korean restaurants in the area. I just wish I took the picture before mixing everything. I was so hungry I just couldn't wait. this dish almost has all your major food groups. meat(beef, egg)... GOOD! vegetables(spinach, carrots, cucumbers, radishes)... GOOD! grain(rice)... GOOD! give me a glass of milk and it's all covered! =) all this in a HOT sizzling bowl. definitely perfect for a cold day. oh yeah, I can't forget about the side dishes. this place gives the most side dishes compared to the other korean restaurants in the area plus they're not skimpy with refilling them. their side dishes consist of bean sprouts, salad, seaweed, tofu, potatoes, radishes, cucumbers, of course, kimchi, and finally the anchovies. nobody else offers anchovies. I was shocked that they had it so I just had to take a picture to prove it. all this for $11! not bad for all this. if you get bored you can watch the korean channel on their lcd tv. =) read more

You know those places that you pass by every day, but you never stop until we decided to last Friday night. I've lived here in the valley all my life - and the nearby Sees Candy store has been there since my wee little brain can remember. but I didn't notice Koren BBQ until I read some of the reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is definitely spartan in decor. There's a flat panel TV mounted above cashier. But, the place is clean and tables are bussed quickly after the table is vacated. I'm pretty basic when it comes to ordering at a Korean restaurant - my favorite is the bi bim bap - kinda like a salad mixed in with slices of BBQ beef, vegetables and an egg over easy. You mix all this stuff up with some chili paste or sauce - and YUM! S. ordered the pork bul go gi, but found out that the spice they used didn't really agree with his stomach (he's got a sensitive tummy) and the owner was very quick and curteous about replacing his meal with something much milder. The thing I love about going to a Korean restaurant is all the little pickles and condiments that tantilize my taste buds. The kim chee was very flavorful (not too spicy hot). The service was quick and attentive - our tea cups and glasses were kept full. The only thing about this place is that the parking can be challenging. There's limited parking on the street and in the lot adjacent to the restaurant. I understand that there's parking in the back - but since we didn't park back there, I don't know how safe that area is. We definitely had a good dining experience and will be back again! read more

Sigoljip was a decent Korean restaurant.. I got the seafood pancake (pahjuhn) and the dolsot bibimbap and shared with my friend. It was definitely a lot of food along with all the banchan and the soup they give you, and we had leftovers that'll be my lunch! The service was ok, and the food came out so so fast! I haven't gotten the Korean BBQ though, so maybe I'd like it more based on that. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't memorable. Not sure I'd go back since there are so many other Korean restaurants in the area. Oh! I haven't been to this place was middle/high school. The place really hasn't changed muched. As far as atmosphere goes anyways. But the ajumas are friendly (even friendly if you speak korean) and the food was filling, delish, and reasonably priced. Although, there was some banchan (side dishes) that I wasn't really use to having, coming from a Korean household, Like the pickled seaweed thingy. When I went here, during lunch, the crowd was mixed. In fact, I think I was the only Korean customer at the place. Probably 'cause it was a Sunday Afternoon and most Koreans are at Church. I LOVE shigoljip when I'm craving some good old korean food. The customer service here is welcoming, and I love how everything tastes here that I've tried. My family enjoys take out and dining in here both. The restaurant itself is small and has a small packed parking area since it's by other small businesses as well. It's clean and neat inside with many tables. All the ladies that work here always have a smile on, and is really welcoming to everyone. I highly highly recommend their gamja tang. It's a potato and pork korean soup/stew. It's hard to find a restaurant that makes the dish just right, but shigoljip does it absolutely perfectly. The flavors are really amazing in their soup. Came here for dinner and got the bbq beef. It was a huge pile of beef on a bed of slightly grilled onions, a bunch of the side dishes and a small thing of rice. The beef was good, juicy, just chewy enough, really good. There's plenty of it too, so be ready to share. The pickled cucumbers are really good, not overly pickled so they're still crunchy. Most Korean spots that I've been to don't typically "refill" the side dishes (or do they and I just don't notice??) Anyway, the servers were very attentive and quick to make sure your drinks were filled, and also came by often to check up on us (but not too much where it's annoying). We've been here several times and have not been disappointed. We usually ordered the bbq beef and pork and sometimes add a soup or noodle dish. They give you generous portions as well as plenty of side dishes and soup to go with your meal. It was my hubby's bday so they threw in a small plate of jab chae. The servers were both very attentive and kept re-filling our side dishes without us asking. :) 2 thumbs up for service. We will be back again for sure. Took the family here for my sister's birthday last night and was pleasantly surprised that the food was FANTASTIC. The 4 star rating is due to lack of the usual Korean bbq grills at the table that you would expect from the name, their selection on soju, and unlike any other korean restuarant, they did not supply endless kim chee dishes until the end of the meal. Look past the minimal decor and you will find all the regular korean dishes on the menu that is nothing but regular. Order their special seabass...literally makes your mouth orgasism. I've tried their #10 lunch special (comes with soup) of Bi Bim Bap, which includes rice, beef, veggies, and egg, and it's DELICIOUS! Today I tried out their organic vegetables w/ rice claypot. YUM! :) If you're a vegetarian like me, I just tell them to put the meat on the side and *bam* all your buddies have an extra dish of meat and it all works out! The service is friendly and quick. You get endless standard Korean side dishes (but doesn't include japchae!). I've now become a big fan of beansprouts and seaweed. Surprisingly, I got the approval. Found this place on Yelp. It was really good. I was a little worried when I saw how much bbq beef I got, but I ended up eating it all. It might be hard to find this place because there is no English name anywhere to be found on the outside of the restaurant. The only thing printed are the words "Korea BBQ". In Korean, "sigoljip" means 'country house' and the food is certainly a reflection of what it must taste like in the old country. We went on the recommendation of a Korean friend and she even gave me a list of items to order. "Dol sot bibimbap" is rice cooked in a stone pot with beef, bean sprouts, spinach, carrots, sesame seeds and a fried egg over easy. When the dish arrives at the table it is still sizzling. You add your own "heat" using this spicy sweet paste brought to your table. The heat from the stone pot leaves this awesome crackling on the bottom of the pot adding a wonderful texture to your rice. "Ssam bap" is a plate of BBQ meat (either pork or beef), a small pot of "jige" (soup--Korean miso soup in this case) and a lot of greens to use as wrapping. There is a Korean 'miso' paste also with this dish used as a dipping sauce. It was absolutely delicious. The greens also included blanched cabbage, kelp and different sorts of lettuce not often seen at markets. We also ordered a chicken dish for our son because we were afraid the other dishes might be spicy. The chicken arrived on a sizzling platter. It was grilled with onions and was moist and tender. The menus have some photos so even if you don't understand Korean, you are able to at least choose from the look of it. The staff is very friendly and eager to help if you don't know. We had more than enough food for 4 persons because all meals are accompanied by "panchan" -- a host of side dishes such as kimchi, japchae and the like. A complimentary dessert of sweet rice soup helps you with indigestion. If you still have room, go across the street to Real Ice Cream for some premium Indian ice cream. read more
