Everyone that I've talked to about this place, always gives it great review. My office manager swears by it and insists that I go during the weekend. I'm not a big fan of busy places. I like to sit and enjoy myself in a quiet and calm atmosphere. This place gets busy but the thing is, they can accomadate people in quiet nicely. This place is spacious, clean, and hosts a good amount of employees that work on you hand and foot. They have an array of polishes, aromatic food soaks, warm lotions, and great hand/foot massage while getting a mani/pedi. Make a reservation. Sounds cooky, but this place will be tough if you are walking in. Go to the bathroom before. You will be in here for an hour +. Tips are only in cash. Only odd thing is that I've been told that none of the employees are allowed to talk or chit chat while working. When I was there, they were chatting up a storm in the upstairs room. I understand and speak Vietnamese, so it was awkward trying to not eavesdrop. Probably a solid reason why I don't like going to get mani/pedis at "asian" places. You may notice that I review a lot of nail salons ... Not sure why it's taken me so long to write this review because Silk is an obvious favorite that stands heads above the rest. I've had a number of bad experiences with nail salons in the city - short massages, shitty service, cheap polish jobs, etc. None of that here. The owner J runs her shop like a true business woman - always putting her guests first and from what I can tell - treating her staff like professionals instead of shop workers. The mani/pedi - You get a big warm bowl at your feet filled with flower pedals. You spend the hour being primped and cared for and you get a massage that's worth writing home about. After the hot oil/lotion massage they wrap your arms and legs in steamy hot towels to finally then get polished. True perfection! The waxing - Best. Brazilian. Ever. I won't go anywhere else and have been doing this here for the last 3 years. T and Tina are the best - super quick to get the job done without missing a single spot. The private room is also very relaxing. Over the years Silk has grown to be so popular that you now always need to call in advance to make an appointment. My favorite part of the mani-pedi here is the warm lotion they use to massage your hands and feet. This is my simple pleasure that I must indulge twice a month. Also, the service is really good. All the folks there are super nice. Saturdays they bring in some yummy treats so it's an incentive to have your appointments then. Also, Te does the waxing there. I thought that if you've gone from nail salon to nail salon in San Francisco to San Jose for manicures and pedicures - you've had one, you've had them all. Until my experience today at Silk. This is truly pampering at its finest. Great selection of designer nail polishes. Chanel was the one for me that day! You sit in nice comfortable chairs with plush pillows and are in pure relaxation mode with the serene music playing. The staff pays attention to every last detail of your hands and feet; it was one of the most thorough mani's and pedi's I've ever had. Now, let me tell you about this warm lotion massage that is out of this world. Usually when you get a manicure and pedicure the massages are mediocre, but this...ohhhhh....this one makes you just close your eyes, sink in the chair, and go to your happy place. I have been to Silk 3 times and that will be it. The area under my cuticles have been swollen since my last visit 3 and a half weeks ago. I am quite disappointed because the foot/arm/hand massages that come with the mani-pedis are great and I will no longer enjoy that part of it. I started going to Silk a few months ago when I learned that Silk uses a sterilizer to clean its instruments. However on my last visit, I was shocked to see that the sterilizer was not once turned on. (Anyone correct me if I am wrong). The instruments appeared to be taken out of cold sterile solution and placed in the sterilizer merely to dry. Now, I will pay a little more for my services at Teashi since it is now the only place I know that uses a sterilizer. The instruments are actually packaged in sterile bags and removed when used on a client. That is what I want to see to alleviate my paranoia. read more

I've only been to Silk Nails once and I almost hyperventilaed when I got the bill for my mani/pedi. $48 - cripes! *however* It's been almost 2 weeks since my visit and my nails look amazing. NOT EVEN ONE CHIP. It's defies reality. Alas, I concur - it's better to spend more on one service with amazing results than cheap out and have to go back weekly. Summary - best value (quality/price) that I've found in SF for a mani/pedi combo. I went here as part of a bachelorette party on a Saturday morning, which is always a busy time in these places so I was prepared for pandemonium. There were a half dozen of us, all of whom were promptly and easily accommodated amidst the other guests. The we were seated in super plush, warm and comfortable armchairs - not your standard for nail salons, but I really appreciated the cozy touch. They were also serving complimentary dim sum, cookies, beverages and snacks to the whole salon (not just our party) Who does that? That's awesome! I thought my specialist did an excellent job, the manicure is the longest lasting one I've ever had (1+ weeks) without a single chip. I would totally go here again. read more

Dear Silk, Sorry I forgot to write you a review for about 4 years now but here we go... I really love Silk, but I can't afford it all the time, maybe once a week max. Actually, once a month (here and another salon). I mean, I get my mani-pedi every two weeks which is normal for a low-maintenance gal. They restore my nails to its normal state and they always seem to have my Spring time color of choice (Chanel Ballerina or Chanel Rose Moiré). The one time my nails weren't up to par, I called for a polish touch-up I ended up getting a re-do mani. I adore Silk. This place is non stop CRAZY busy. And for good reason..From the moment you step foot in the door to the finish, you will pampered in style. I won't lie, my feet were seriously busted up from the heels I wear to work and all the running I do on weekends. I was borderline embarrassed to even make an appointment for a pedicure because I didn't want anyone to have nightmares from looking at my feet. But after reading so much about Silk, I finally forced myself to make an appointment. And I am *so* glad that I did. Hands. Down. The best pedicure I have ever received. From the bowl of flower water they soak your feet in to the creamy lotion and hot towels they use to massage your legs.... It's just an hour of pure heaven. And the entire time I was there, I never once caught a whiff of the typical "nail polish" smell you encounter in most nail salons. I came here as part of a bachelorette party and Silk made it a wonderful experience. The service is friendly, professional and good, and the space is lovely and relaxing. I had a mani/pedi, but I don't get polish on my fingernails (since it just peels off in approximately 10 seconds most of the time) so I asked to have my fingernails buffed instead. My nail tech took her time - 20 minutes! - and I came away with the most beautiful, symmetrical naked nails anyone has ever seen! Bottom line - a true spa mani/pedi experience and worth every penny. I felt compelled to write a review today based on my experience at another neighborhood nail salon which, surprisingly, has the same number of stars but really doesn't even compare to Silk in so many ways. I usually get lucky as a walk-in or making my appointment the morning of but my luck ran out today so I was forced to go somewhere else. Never again! While the interior of Silk may be dated, it's clean and light and airy. The technicians are kind, detail oriented and skillful. AND THEY GIVE FANTASTIC MASSAGES! Part of the reason I get mani/pedi's is for the wonderful, relaxing massage. Yes, Silk may seem pricey on the surface, but when you break it down, it's worth every penny. The short of it: This would have been a four star review if it was not for the owner/manager treating the staff as if she was running a sweatshop. NOT RELAXING! The long version: I usually get my nails done at Tru, it is a very peaceful and personal environment. However, my favorite technician went on vacation and I had a gift certificate to Silk so I made an appointment, hoping beyond hope that it would be an awesome experience since their prices are much more reasonable than what I usually pay and it is much closer to my home. The set up is nicer than most high volume places, the chairs are comfy. However, having my fingers done at the same time as my toes was not very comfortable. Amy and Mui did an above average job on my mani/pedi, my dark polish was well done. Thank you. BUT, and this is a HUGE BUT, the woman running the place was yelling at an employee in the back room regarding how she removed a foot bowl and was constantly berating other employees or giving them dirty looks. The scared look of one employee who upon dropping something immediately searched for her with a look of fear and was then given a withering look said it all. This place has very comfy chairs that are quite pretty. The atmosphere is like a cheap salon, but the prices are closer to a day spa ($30 for a normal pedicure ONLY). The polish color selection may be the best I've ever seen by far, and it is nice to have candy and such out waiting for you. The pedicure itself was not great - the massage was not a massage as much as an annoying rub that outwore its welcome ten seconds in. The service was brusque (sp?), and the front desk clerk was pretentious and irritating. The best place in SF to go for mani/pedis and for waxing.. stuff. What it lacks in decor is more than made up for in its stellar service, the Saturday morning buffet, and the wonderful staff. Plus, the warm lotion. Ohhhh, the lotion. Also, be sure to stop in the bathroom. When you go in, it's like you're amazingly whisked away to a peaceful, candlelit oasis. When I took the roomie to Silk, she went into the bathroom, returned and said, "Have you been inside their bathroom? It's awesome!" Great selection of nail polishes, too. The only questionable thing about the whole place is the plates of food they set out. I appreciate the sentiment of having gummi bears to munch on with the seemingly sanitary tongs they offer customers to use. But, I've seen too many customers grab those tasty bears with their bare hands. Gross. If I feel the desperate need for a gummi bear, though, I dig the tongs into that clump of bears for some untouched gummi bear lovin'. But I didn't say that. Oh, yes. I did. This is my favorite place to get a mani/pedi in San Francisco and I'd say I've gone to my fair share of places. Given the level of service, the amenities, the value, and how its fairly close to my apartment, I really can't complain. It could get difficult booking an appointment if you don't call in advance but I think it's worth the wait. First off, they have a great selection of colors to choose from including OPI, NARS, Chanel, etc., the chairs are really comfortable, they use sterilized equipment and very good products, the water temperature is good, the massages are nice, I love the hot lotion, they're detailed esp with the cuticles (which is very important to me) and they serve drinks and snacks AND have a CANDY BAR right where you dry your nails! How awesome is all of that? I seriously love how pampered I feel after my mani/pedi's from here. I am giving it a ding though because one time the manicurist wasn't being very friendly and on top of that she accidentally cut my skin which took several days to heal. She did apologize and told the owner who also apologized. read more

This place is hard for me to judge, as it is not my cheap nail place, J.T. Nails, but it's not my favorite spa, Nob Hill Spa. It is right in the middle for me. The space is nice, very clean. It is quiet and it doesn't smell like toxic fumes, like some nail places. It smells sweet and relaxing, if that exists. I have had both manicures and pedicures there. Tony is my favorite for pedicures, don't steal him. For manicures, I don't really have a favorite, as I get a different person every instance I go. I have the hot cream that they use on my arms and legs, it makes them glow. Remember, I am a man with body hair, so to find something that works is a little bit unusual. Most creams I don't really believe in, but I believe in what they use. My nails always feel very clean after the entire experience, which I like. Some places that I have tried in the past, here and in NY do not leave that experience. Alright, this is my favorite part. On Saturday, they have a wonderful food spread, with savories, sweets, and a nice drink selection. So, Silks is my mid-level favorite nail place, but still a special place to try. It's comfortable and peaceful. To those who want noise, there are lots of nail places where the nail people are on the phones the entire time.... This place isn't perfect, but it deserves a 4, maybe 4.5 if I could offer that. read more

Very comfy chairs and GOOD warm lotion hand and foot massages. Fast and efficient service to boot. The decor and ambiance are much less relaxing (crowded and cramped) and not as pretty as Polished Lounge (see my PL review). My french mani was OK but didn't turn out as nice either. Lots of munchies on the day I was there: gummi bears, M&Ms, Costco Pub Mix and an assortment of mini chocolates. Overall, I think I liked Polished Lounge better even though both places get an equal amount of stars ( but for different reasons). It just really depends on what you like/are looking for. read more

Silk understands women. We don't just get our nails done because we want to look our best. We want to feel pampered. We want to feel sexy and catered to. I don't know about you but my hands really take a beating. Men will probably read what I just said and think something entirely different but what I was trying to insinuate was that I work pretty damn hard and my hands ache some days. At the end of a long week there is nothing better than sitting in a dimly lit room , with soft music playing, minimal voices and someone rubbing hot oil on your hands and sore calves. No one asks you why you have no boyfriend or yells something abruptly over her shoulder in Vietnamese when I say that I live alone. The color application lasts up to 3 weeks which is virtually unheard of . You are served refreshments , snacks and there is a comfortable seating area for the man who decides to wait patiently for you (in my dreams). Of course, I don't have one of those but in the event that you do.....make him pay for it because it's $60 for a mani/pedi . read more

Last week my sister treated her bridal party and mom to a mani/pedi at Silk. Walking in, I had no idea what to expect. Weeks before I read rave reviews for Silk, but it wasn't until I sat down and saw all the awards on the wall that I realized this was the same place. The five of us had a 10am appt on Friday morning. A bit earlier than I wanted, but at that time, there was only one person inside. Score. Most of the ladies that worked on us were Cantonese. They were all very nice. I LOVED the warm lotion on my arms and legs. And then when she used the hot towel, I almost melted. The massage was terrific, too. She was strong, but not rough. I've never experienced anything quite like this in the Bay Area. I liked the Essie/OPI/Chanel selection. I loved the openness of the salon. I loved the free candy (even though I don't have a sweet tooth). I loved the hot water bath for my feet and I LOVED that there were two ladies working on you at the same time. Talk about efficiency. Most of the girls asked for a french manicure & although mine was "ok," next time I will ask her to use two coats of Mademoiselle, as opposed to one. I definitely preferred my sister's and mom's over mine. And the lady that did my pedicure didn't properly file my nails. Two of them were "slanted." I asked her to correct the second toe b/c I could hide the pinky toe, but not that one. Oh, and while the others had two girls working on them from the start, my manicurist was fifteen minutes late, so everyone had to wait for me to finish. I wish everyone would'v'e started on time b/c every minute counts when it's a wedding weekend, you know? All in all, it was a great experience. I think the whole thing cost $50, but I'm not sure, my sister paid for it. I will definitely be back. What a lovely treat. It's been a week and my pedicure still looks great. Super high quality. They take their time and it shows. Ultra relaxing, clean, and the pedicures last for weeks (I've gone a month before with no chips!), and most importantly, this is quite possibly the best ventilated nail salon I've been to in SF - no harsh chemical smells - which in my book is priceless. Loved the 10% discount from yelp. They did not skimp on the warm lotion, it was almost too much. Didn't like: Decor: Not cushy or relaxing, but stark and drab and in major need of an update. Major dislike: Manicurist: I requested square nail shaping, she proceeded to do squ-oval. I explained a second time and described in detail what I wanted and she still did not shape my nails as I asked. I was totally displeased with this and had to reshape them at home. The technicians, sort of speak English, but not really. This is a problem for me. I will pay more $ to get the service I deserve and won't be going back to Silk. Just for the warm mango lotion and the super long arm and leg massages, I'd give this place 5 stars. Most nail salons I've been to totally tease you with a 1 minute massage on your arms/legs and then it's over. At Silk, I kept dreading the end of the infamous warm mango lotion massage... but it kept going... and going... until I was so relaxed that I stopped bracing myself for the end. And then came the hot towels, which they wrap around your arms and legs. Ahhh... LOL The place itself is very cozy. Lots of big chairs with lots of pillows so you can really lean back and just relax. I've been here 3 times so far and had great experiences every time. The mani/pedis last a long time too. I got a french mani/pedi and type at work all day, but it still looks like new after 2 weeks - especially the tips! Compared to other places, Silk is probably on the pricier side ($50 for french mani and pedi), but the massage and the fact that the polish stays intact for a while makes it well worth it. I'd give Silk 4.5 stars if I could... I had to take away half a star because the lady who did my mani this time cut one of my fingers with her file (ouch) and somehow left a knick in another finger as well. She was very apologetic, so I didn't make a big deal about it. But it kinda sucked to feel the sting every time I washed my hands for the next few days. Of course, that warm mango lotion made me forget all about those cuts, if only for a few... long... moments. ;) read more

$20 for a bikini wax? I'm sold. You need to go to a separate room for waxing which is a few doors down from the main building/room. The staff is really friendly and I thought the facilities were pretty clean. Mani/pedi seems pretty overpriced (but then again, I'm used to NYC prices where you can get it for $15...) I've been to several nail salons in the city but this one has a lot of perks mostly when you go on a Saturday. When I mean perks I mean lots of snacks and drinks to indulge on when you're waiting for your turn to sit in one of their soft and comfy chairs for a mani or a pedi. This nail salon has a ton of nail color selection with a variety of brands of nail polish from OPI, Essie, Deborah Lippman, to ones I've never heard of. I received a pedicure all three times I've been here and have never had a problem. I do have to say the last time I was here the person who did my nails took the time to make sure she evenly shaped my big toe even when I wasn't concerned about it. It does get busy so make sure to make an appointment!!! read more

I really enjoy coming here. My only (very minor) complaint was my pinky toe's polish got smudged when my person was putting my sandals on, and didn't offer to touch it up. My sister's technician put flip flops on before the polish (which seems smart)-- not sure which is standard there. They offer disposable sandals if you don't bring your own. But the lotion, the warm towels, the heating pad for my back... all lovely touches that make this quite a pleasant experience. The person doing my pedicure also accidentally cut a little too deep when trimming my cuticles, and though I'd barely noticed, she stopped what she was doing to let me know she'd made a mistake and was going to put some antibacterial spray on it. I brought my own drink, but they also offered tea or water. Convenient enough if you're coming from downtown on a lunch break as I was recently-- just a few blocks from a 38 stop! read more

Finally came to Silk for the first time; as I'd actually got around to making an appointment and also had a gift certificate to redeem from a thoughtful friend. Not a mani girl, so just came for pedicure. Since I knew they are pricey, was very curious to find out what a $30 pedicure got me. So this is what I found out -- A soak in warm rose petal filled water A warm-lotion half-leg massage A selection of high end polishes (yes, the OPI, essie, and Chanel) with a wide range of color Snack/food spread to enjoy (only on weekends?) Color that lasts without chipping for 3+ weeks Can't exactly say it's worth the premium, but wouldn't pass up coming back for a "treat" pampering! Oh, and extra kudos for taking expired gift certificate. Called in advance to check and was happy to hear it was "not a problem"! Definitely recommend making an appointment. I'm not really to why exactly this location has just 4.5 stars, this is the BEST place I could have gone to! Yes I know the price isn't exactly cheap but the money you spend "ON YOURSELF" which I must add its all worth it! For their basic Mani & Pedi $50 as of March 2013. As a girl a wide selection of nail polish what to do... what to do... which one... which one.. I wasn't sure on which color to get I was confused. So they seat you in this nice comfy recliner chair, I didn't get a warm pack at the time but they soaked my fee into this pretty bowl of warm water... AHHHHH relaxing says my feet! They take their time with the who Pei portion. The Mani is really different, we're use to getting a bowl of water to soften the cuticles and hang nails and so on. They just get straight to it, no warm water to dip those fingers they just use the normal cuticle softeners and do what they have to do. For the BEST PART! Warm lotion massage! YAY! Their very gentle with the whole massage I WAS IN SPA HEAVEN! After that they do put a hot towel over your legs and arms WOW, leave it on there for a few minutes then they wipe it off. My nails we're pretty my BF and I were satisfied customers and the end of the day. Service wonderful they take their time, they don't rush. They do give you complimentary tea/water, they do have candy also. I say DO IT! you can't go wrong and yes I will be going here more often! OH YES! Well, after reading the reviews for this place, I went ahead and booked a mani/pedi (plus silk nails for me) for my fiance and I prior to our wedding. I confirmed my appointment with them before we left Denver, and when we arrived for our appointment - nothing was right. They had scheduled just one basic mani/pedi. So, they squeezed us both in which was awesome; however, they didn't have me scheduled for silk nails. When they finally figured out how to get me in...the girl talked me out of silk nails, because she said they were too brittle so I went ahead with acrylic tips per her suggestion. To make a long story short....it was all figured out, but i was at the spa over an hour longer than my fiance. The acrylics looked terrible on the spot, and the manager (who was fantastic and did aim to please) - had them repainted (just a simple light pink polish). Literally two days later -- the nails looked horrible, the paint was chipping, and they just looked unprofessional. I think I've painted my nails better in the past. They cracked several days later (I was on my honeymoon, people: i.e. being lazy, not working, not typing, etc.), and I ended up getting them removed at a nail place in Cambria. Talk about disappointment!! I was so bummed. I rarely spring for nails, and when I do - they tend to look fantastic. I've not had a bad experience until now. Now, the one saving grace: absolutely fabulous pedicure!! I wish that my manicure had been 1/2 this awesome. My toes STILL rock....and it's been over two weeks. The massage and warm towel...the aromatherapy foot bath. Heaven! I gave three stars based on this fact alone. I say -- five stars on the pedicure, and 1 star on the manicure....I guess equal three stars?? The manager was also fabulous, and the staff was very friendly. Came here a couple times. The last time I was here was a few months ago, the day before my wedding to get pre-wedding pretty/pampered. They did an excellent job and the chairs are super comfortable. The rose petal foot soak is heavenly! I felt very pampered (except for the phone call I received from my fiance while I was getting a foot massage telling me there was an issue with the tuxes). This is a review from my visit on 11/23/13. I had an amazing first experience! I've wondered about this place for a while, and finally had my chance while my car was in the shop next door. I'll admit I was a little apprehensive because I usually like my massage chair, but the way they treat their customers and the care and attention that was put into my mani / pedi - I can do without my massage chair any day!!! I've been here a couple of times for nails. My favorite is herval pedicure. Foot bath and hand massages with flowers always make me so relaxed. That's the way to fix myself when I lost my "work-life balance"... The place is cozy like friends' room. I sometimes wish to have more space between the seats, but usually I don't care too much.
