They've come a very long way, service wise, but I've realized that this isn't the store that's open to answering a lot of questions or giving recommendations. You gotta pretty much come in, and know what you want. I just adapted the thought where if I don't see it, they likely don't have it- especially if it's produce. I come for the fresh curry pastes and the Thai ingredients that I can't find in the local stores. My daughters love the Thai Lays flavors and candies! Mainly products shipped from Thailand. I bought a variety of Thai instant soups and drinks I've never seen before at our local Asian grocers. The main thing I was interested in were their instant Thai boat flavors. It's pretty small but I think it's one of those places uniques to LA. I found these essential oil nasal vapors that's only from Thailand and I had to buy the whole set. I thought it had different smells but they were just different faces same smell. For the last 30 years there's been this supermarket in the back. Dumbfounded I had no idea So when I found out they have Mama Pad Thai noodles i came by and checked it out. This whole time what I thought was a facade was a actual live supermarket. Stepping inside this place and comparing prices with other stores this location is more eco friendly. The reason I found out about this place is because outside on the street is where they sell street Thai food. Do y'all remember that movie ? Rumble in the Bronx ? I researched LA county and this is the ONLY Thai market that sells all the ingredients needed to make a wonderful Thai Tomyang soup. You will find the kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass , galanga, Limes, green onion, mushrooms all together in one spot and you can read the names of each vegestable. This is my favorite market for Thai groceries. They generally always have everything that I need. And the staff is super sweet! They usually have all of the thai herbs and vegetables I can not find at other grocery stores including, thai basil, sweet basil, holy basil, pea eggplants, thai eggplants, kaffir lime leaves, culantro, lemon basil, dill, bean sprouts, etc. They also have an extensive freezer section including hard to find ingredients like coriander root and frozen durian. They ALSO also have a vegan/vegetarian freezer section! Thai food is generally pretty easy to make vegan, and this place has all of the tools. Parking is free as long as you buy something and get it validated. read more

I am a westerner interested in Thai cooking. I recently visited three different markets (Bangluck, 99 Ranch, and Silom) in search of Thai ingredients. 99 Ranch is pretty good, but Silom was the best for Thai Ingredients. Only at Silom, located in the midst of LA's Thai Town, was I able to find Makrut (Keffir) lime leaves. Bangluck, at the time of my visit, didn't have them, and 99 Ranch had domestic lime leaves only. I taste tested both, and the Makrut lime leaves have a lovely burst of flavor. For things like soy sauce, oyster sauce, and fish sauce, I was able to find most of the brands I wanted at 99 Ranch, but generally only in large sizes. At Silom I was able to find the good brands, but in smaller 10oz sizes, which is good for a casual cook like me who isn't cooking asian food every night. If I buy a 20 oz bottle of oyster sauce, at least half it is going to waste. Silom also had smaller sizes of dried shrimp (again, only available in a huge size at 99 Ranch), and great individual packets of stir fry ingredients like pea pods. They had an awesome selection of Thai style potato chips, candies and other fun snacks as well. If you are new to this market, there is convenient parking located to the rear. read more

This is my favorite Thai market in the Los Angeles area. Staff is polite. They will go out of their way to help you out, if needed. Parking not an issue here (there is plenty), except maybe on weekends I imagine. Aesthetically this market needs renovation bad - it's straight up ugly and disorganized. However, it's clean and has a charm to it. Compared to other Thai markets in the area this one more has stuff and maybe price range is a tad higher. If your looking for hard to find "Thai" ingredients, exotic veggies and herbs, spices, condiments; and cooking utensils this market has it all. Also, the Thai non-perishable and fresh snacks including desserts are tasty - not all. My only complaint is the expiration dates on produce. They had moldy "Thai birds eye chili peppers " in the produce section, nasty! One of the workers brought me a fresh pack of chili peppers from the back, so just say something if you notice something is not fresh or (worse) expired. The workers are pretty cool here. read more

Made it a point to stop by here after driving by many times and was pleasantly surprised to find parking in the back as well as an assortment of prepared foods that works well for a quick, delicious lunch! Parking can be validated for purchases of $10 or more, The family that runs the khanom krok stand at the entrance also dishes up various snacks/goodies at a fair price. The shop can definitely use a facelift, but I suppose same can be said of 85% of Asian Mom and Pop grocery stores. Some produce looks fresh, while others leave a lot to be desired. It's nice to have access to Asian herbs and ingredients so I don't have to venture out to SGV each time I need lemongrass or Thai lime leaves for a recipe. read more

Real talk. I only come in if I'm desperate, and they are very close to where I live, but the staff here are just downright rude. Once I was looking for basil and certain chili peppers, but after checking the herb area it wasn't there. So I asked the guy while he was stocking produce if he could help me, and he would point in a certain direction and walk away. I asked for assistance again and he walked away once more. Most recently I was checking out, and the cashier never spoke a word to me while his eyes fixated on the TV the entire time. He did not care that he was taking his sweet time, and reached for more items to scan only to discover the last item he scanned concluded my purchase. That's how much devotion he had into not engaging in his job. They do have a great selection on Asian herbs and spices, dry food, special produce, etc but that is the only redeeming them about them. The prices are slightly above average, not cheap. The store is not clean at all. I find myself washing the dust off the canned goods after bringing them home. read more

Perfect for what it is supposed to be. Not the prettiest store, not the friendliest staff, but you come for specialty products and the prices. This is my absolute favorite place to be for all my Thai and Asian food item needs (Ranch 99 is my other favorite). I truly appreciate the fresh curry paste varieties that was my initial reason for exploring this market however they quickly became a regular stop for me when doing grocery shopping. There is a "fresh seafood " section where they fry fish to order. I have never tried...imma need someone else to first. Lol. There's a huge frozen section with specialty goodies such as roti and banana leaves. Huge dry goods section ; all kind of beans, grains, and spices. Can also get cookware for the home or restaurant in addition to restaurant supplies! This is a great place to pop into. Metered on street parking, may be tricky depending on time of day. There is a small lot, but must purchase a minimum $10 for validation. read more

I wanted to get a few ingredients for a Thai curry, stuff that would be harder to find at a regular grocery store. Thai eggplant, lemongrass, birdseye chilis, that kind of thing. Did a quick search and saw that Silom was the closest so I went over. I walked in, had my bag checked in-is that a common thing around here? I found the packaged items easily enough but had trouble finding the chilis. There weren't a lot of staff around so I finally got the attention of someone pinging away and asked for chilis, without breaking stride she said in the produce section and when I told her I had already been and didn't see any she seemed incredulous about my claim, saying they're in the corner. So, it turns out there weren't any and she had to go to the back to get them. I don't mind the dim lighting or even the dinginess but staff seem unhelpful I don't really want to come back. read more

I've been to Silom market before, but this time I had a mission had to find some decent, packaged Thai noodles (Trader Joe's had to retire theirs - aargh!!!). Silom is a thai supermarket located (where else?) in Thai Town, in Hollywood, close to the Hollywood and Western subway stop. There's parking behind the store, a quirky lot, they validate for 40 minutes if you buy merchandise that you spend at least $5 on. Bit complicated, but keep that ticket to be stamped when you check out. Decent customer service. Now that we got the necessary info out of the way, let's dig dip into a culinary Thai experience since Silom is so fun to explore. It's big, has mostly Thai products (not only) and you can find almost anything here. Do I know what everything is? No! That's the fun of it, to look around, trying to figure things out. They have great pastries, noodles, vegetables, fruits, pre-made salads if you need lunch to go, Thai beers (Singha!), desserts. A lady makes fresh food for sale at the entrance. Prices are decent, on the lower side, so you can take some chances. We were craving some taro pastries, so we loaded on those (very good), some custard ones, got many versions of Thai noodles, so that'll be fun to have here and there. Our miss - a Taro custard cake, when we opened it at home we didn't like the smell- it had fried onion on top, not the dessert we hoped for, but that's OK, lesson learnt - read the labels! Our favorites- a peach boba drink and their curry pastries, not too spicy, loved the dough. Silom is fun to stroll through, it's like taking a trip to another country. Because this is what Silom is, an ethnic, exotic market, it's a little adventure you can have in the middle of LA. Don't be afraid, explore. I would have looked around some more, to explore and to learn more inside this fun market, but hey, I was watching for my 40 minutes limit! Maybe they can validate for an hour? That would me things more relaxed, you could take more time to discover fun Thai products. Because Silom offers a nice slice of the Thai food culture. read more

If I took Silom by literal pronunciation, I'm going to say that it means "the colors of the wind." Hello Pocahontas where are you? So yeah, silom is not a tonal word. Not like "suay" which could mean both "dangerous" and "beautiful" depending on your pitch on the vowel. You could either get a kiss or a slap in the face if you're not careful. There are many words in the Thai language that are tonal which can make it confusing. Not to mention "kao" which could mean horns, rice, white, or fishy. Silom Supermarket is a little Thai supermarket. There are things here that can't be found at other Asian supermarkets. This includes some Thai curry pastes, Thai sauces, Thai holy basil, Thai eggplants... yeah. You'd be leaving this place all Thai'd out! The grocery section is... okay. There's not that big of a selection here. Just one aisle of what seems like pure vegetables. Chopped papaya salad, lettuce, cabbages, bellpeppers, and some other stuff. A whole aisle of every brand of cup noodles for the starving student. I never bought any of the meat section so I have no idea how it is. An aisle dedicated to Thai herbal stuff. They have a whole set of pain relievers, herbal Thai teeth powder, herbal oils, yeah that sort of thing. There are people that make and deliver bento boxes of Thai food on the weekends. This includes Grilled Pork Skewers, Grilled Chicken Skewers, Egg Noodles with BBQ Pork, Spare Pork Ribs, Thai Sausage, Moo Namtok, Moo Satay, Chicken Satay, and Larb. The sticky rice in these boxes are fantastic. There are no hard bits it's all soft and sticky. The grilled pork skewers are my absolute favorite. Great pork flavor! So tender and there are no crazy globs of fat. There is a lady that sits around the checkout area. She makes super spicy Thai soups and curries. Like off the chart spicy. I didn't think humans could eat that spicy, we've had to modify her soups a few times. She's off to Thailand to get surgery for her leg for a few months and she should be back soon. There's also a woman near the end of the supermarket that makes Thai desserts on the spot including Thai tacos and curry puffs. Most of the aisles are really narrow. It's usually super cold in this supermarket so it's highly recommended that you wear something warm. For parking, you can park in the structure. You have to get a receipt stamped for free parking or you can park on the meters. Overall, 3 stars for market selection and 1 extra star for all the good Thai food that is made or delivered here. This supermarket is great for getting Thai related things. The people that prepare food here make really awesome Thai food. read more

It's easy to park and shop here. I should really give it four stars because it's not like it knocks my socks off, but I have chosen to give it five and take away a star if something distinguishable from an isolated incident should color my view. There are gluten-free tofu donuts here and some instant ginger tea that I just can't seem to live without. If you are making any thai dishes and need things like kefir limes or special fish broth, the freezer section is well stocked. To boot, the staff seems to speak English very well and is very friendly and patient with questions. There are some special Thai teas that are good for overall health and some for kidney or liver health and the staff takes the time to explain to people who are not thai. I love thai food and thai people so this place is just thrilling. Parking is easy. You'll be in Hollywood so don't expect a posh neighborhood. Expect authenticity, good value and a novel experience with sweet Thai peeps-- always so polite. read more

Their prices are ok.. maybe $1 more than some stuffs sold in LAX (we called it Thai Costco). In SF we don't have store like that (maybe I don't know of?). I was able to bought a lot of stuffs from that store Like Thai red and yellow curry paste (not the one in the glass bottle), thai crushed chili powder and also fried shallot (I am hoping smell like fried shallot not not one of those doesn't small like onion). I wish I can buy more since some of them are cheaper over there.. we also bought a whole bunch of frozen durian, which we thought $15.99 per bag, but they are sold per pound so end up paying some of them $16 and some are $20. Smelly messy and dirty market where is the health department??? No service what so ever. I asked for help from a sraff member and got rude respond, no help. the lady at the registrar was helpful in arranging delivery to my car. They have good selection of products but was difficult to find what I was looking for and impossible to get help. Many of the "fresh" produce saw better days and should have being in the trush long time ago. Many of the products are made in China. I don't know about you but I rather not have them in my kitchen. Thailand is a magic place, and this little store (surrounded in a plaza by other little stores and bakeries) is like a cultural interactive experience. First: people are EXTREMELY nice, produce is FRESH FRESH FRESH, pastries are yum, tamarind is plenty, there's a lot for parking but don't get too excited it's still Hollywood Second: this is an awesome unexpected date place! You can play some games (who can find the coolest Lay's international flavor?), get your girl a nice under $2 souvenir (or splurge!), plan a delicious curry for dinner, stop by nearby Hollywood Thai or another joint for cocktails n karaoke, then go home and make the best coconut curry / pad Thai / green papaya salad of your dreams, do that lady and the tramp noodle thing and ~ Khlxkhelī ~ (snuggle!!!) and then watch Pee Mak Phra Khanong, one of the top box office hits in Thailand! read more

The people who work here are friendly, the pre-made curry pastes are delicious (against the wall in the fridge on the right hand side when you first walk in) and they have everything you need to cook a Thai feast at home. The best part is that even if you have no idea what you're doing - YouTube is your friend, I'm partial to the Hot Thai Kitchen channel - things at Silom are pretty inexpensive and you'll almost always have enough ingredients to try again. This place is well stocked with all the staples - basil, lemongrass, fish sauce, palm sugar, etc - and a decent selection of produce. The quality of the produce can be hit or miss, as many of the local Thai restaurants stock up from Silom, but there's usually enough good stuff for whatever I'm trying to cook up. One-stop shop for all your authentic Thai grocery needs. Last time we were here, we got a great deal on a box of fresh young coconuts, and were satisfied with the whole lot of them. They also have plenty of awesome non-food related items that are really convenient to get here, like cooling powder (seriously, in the Los Angeles heat, this is ridiculously refreshing). The Khanom bueang - Thai crepes, or as I like to think of them, Thai dessert tacos - with meringue and sweet egg yolk threads are made fresh on weekends and are so incredibly delicious! More delicate of a flavor but somewhat similar to a Chinese egg custard tart, but very light (and subsequently super addicting!) What I always think about when I think about this place (and what we always get when we come here) are the prepared foods. These are seriously are amazing! You can find them all on a shelf by the checkout stands: with sticky rice and a variety of meats to choose from, you can't go wrong. Made locally, and I would assume quite fresh every day, these are a real winner for me. I wish I had these easily accessible to me for my work lunches every. single. day. Some of my favorites are the deep fried spareribs, moo dad diew (fried sun dried marinated pork), and sai oua (Northern Thai pork sausage with bold flavors of lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, and its distinctive signature pungent fermented sour funk flavor).
