First I'll say IMO there is nothing equivalent to Chinese food that you get in SF, was their food good? Yea, but it wasn't 'China Town' good, on a comparison their food was a little better than what some of the other local businesses offer. Our family goes here every occasion- birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, you name it! They have delicious food and service is fast! Their staff has been there forever and has they're all kind! When food is cooked, even the kitchen people would not hesitate to bring them to customer's table. Their ambiance is like you're one of the old restaurants in China town. Stumbled upon this Chinese restaurant in San Mateo on Monday afternoon. Man let me tell you it is a cute little hole in the wall place!! Walking in we were greeted right away and seated right away. There were some people there already having dinner. Saw a lot of good reviews about this restaurant and had to give it a shot. When seated the waiter kindly brought a pot of tea for us to drink, very kind of her to do. I personally don't like tea so I let my bf have it all to himself but he personally didn't like that tea. To start off we orders pot stickers and mannnn delicious!!!!! Wow!! Soooo yummmmmyyyy in my tummy! I order the shrimp and chicken clay pot, wasn't anticipating the tofu and I really didn't like how it was majority tofu. Felt like they could of added more chicken at least that's why I'm giving this place a 4 out of 5 stars. But the shrimp and chicken with the sauce was A1 and delicious very different!!! My bf got the sizzling shredded steak and my gosh that was bomb af!!!! It was sooo different spicy flavor to it with a side of rice just tie it all perfectly together! Not to mention the chili oil they had on the side was banging, super delicious and spicy just the way we like it!! So adding all that together with the rice, food, and chili oil, bomb af!!! Best chinese i ever had in the san mateo area. nothing compares to the taste and quality of the food. i have been to this location quite a few times over the years and it's always good. Large quantities as well. My favorite dishes include peking duck, salt and pepper fried oysters, shrimp fried rice, and honey walnut prawns amongst many others. the only thing i could say bad about this place is parking can be an issue. i always order ahead and arrive early to find proper parking to pickup. read more

My husband was craving for Chinese food tonight and he wanted to try this restaurant coz we passed by it one time when we were driving along El Camino. We had a hard time looking for parking spot even though they have street parking along El Camino and a rear parking. that only proves that they are busy. We were greeted and serviced immediately, hot tea and water is served right after we were seated. the place is packed and the hostess is also busy over the phone taking orders for pick up.. but that didnt stop them to provide a faster and good quality customer service. Our server is very polite and very nice, he took our order in no time, we ordered Chicken fried rice, Suzzling Shrimp and Scallops and Beef Onion Stir Fry and Hout and Sour Soup to start with. The wait for our food wasn't bad, 15 or 20 mins knowing that they are so buay. Our food was delicious, well seasoned and seafoods wasn't overcooked. The chicken fried rice was my favorite, it was so tasty. serving is generous and they add extra vegetables on shrimp and scallops. i love it. Came here with my mom and had some super yummy food! We had the lunch specials, pan fried noodles with mixed/house special which had shrimp, chicken, squid, beef and pork and veggies! We also had a chicken eggplant dish which I recommend trying, super buttery and delicious. The last dish we tried was the minced beef with tofu and Chinese pickle, so good, super flavorful. I hope this does not mess up the perfect 3.5 star Chinese restaurant rating. When we decided to move from Cupertino to the Penisula we loved everything about our neighborhood with the exception of a kick-ass old school Chinese restaurant. We did all the dumpling spots, bistros, and 'fancied' up restaurants but hand a hankering for a spot that they could have shot a scene from Brothers Sun at. Kirin in Mountain View was our old go-to, but we wanted something closer. Something where you know families celebrated at, the walls held stories, the chefs smoked cigarettes in the back ally (not sure if they actually do this), and there's a light film of oil on the windows. After 3 years of disappointments, we found this place on a random night and have been coming ever since. My bud insists on the giant clams everytime we're here, and we'll insist on everything else. We hope this spot sticks around for a long time. read more

Although this place seems to have been here for ages, I've only dined here the last several years because my bf's family LOVES this place! It's their go to lunch and dinner spot occasionally and sometimes even few times a week. And I can definitely see why. Of the times I've been here, my favorites are the salt and pepper wings, this clay pot of goodies: charsiu, mushroom, tofu, and fish, garlic pea sprouts, salt and pepper porkchop, fermented bean tong Choy, fookien chow fan, beef with gailan, steamed egg, and steamed pork cake (yook bang) These are a few of our usuals. But the last time we came, we were craving crab and decided to try their salt and pepper crab and egg yolk crab. Of the two, my favorite was the salt and pepper. It was sooo flavorful! Especially with the jalapeños... Omgg. The egg yolk was good too but I'm not much of an egg yolk fan. But everyone in the table loved it. We also added some pumpkin to the egg yolk crab also and that was bomb. Food is reasonable and service is attentive. This place has been here for so long and they definitely have a lot of long time customers aka my bf's fam. Although they're not as packed as before Covid, we did notice a lot of takeout orders. Come here for quintessential Cantonese food in a comfortable but not pretentious or extravagant setting. Silver House is a staple in the Bay Area, located on El Camino. There's not a lot of street parking, but there is a small parking lot in the back of the restaurant that's shared with a few other establishments. Every time we've come here, we've been able to find a spot in that back lot. Silver House's food is solid -- always tasty, cooked well, and reasonably priced. In addition to their regular menu, they also have rotating specials written on whiteboards around the restaurant. Note that a lot of the menu/specials are written in Chinese, but we've found that enough of the staff speaks English so it's not a problem. You can also ask your waiter/waitress for what's fresh/good that day, and they can usually prepare some off-menu items based on your preferences/requests. Silver House used to give a complimentary bowl of dessert (typically red or green bean soup with sago) at the end of the meal, but it looks like they don't do that anymore. Not the right place if you're looking for something fancy/aesthetic, but do come here if you're looking for an authentic Cantonese meal in a casual setting. read more

Feeling more adventurous with my visits to Silver House, I decided to return to try some of their more obscure items to see if any of them were worth deviating from the usual traditional dishes. After looking at the menu, I decided to call in and order a beef noodle soup which cost 13 dollars. Something to note in this section was that the Beef Noodle Soup was in a very small "Noodle Soup" section on the menu, and for good reason too. Silver House does not specialize in noodle soup dishes, so I took that into account for this experience. Taking my takeout home, I opened the box to be quite surprised. At 13 dollars, the portion size was not very large with a few pieces of beef, a couple decent sized bok choy pieces, and dominantly noodles. The broth was given in pretty alright quantity, but it wasn't in large quantity either. I finished the dish in one meal and felt hungry afterward, which is quite rare state to be in at a Chinese restaurant as portion sizes are usually larger than average. One issue I had (and 100% my fault for not reading the Chinese text) was that I realized that the beef given in the dish was regular beef (in Chinese called 牛肉 or "niu rou"). Because I was expecting beef brisket (in Chinese called 牛腩 or "niu nan"), I was less satisfied that I would be overall. I brushed this expectation off and I aimed to review the item for what it was. For this dish, the price to portion is very lacking. But at first I gave myself the benefit of the doubt that the quality would outshine the quantity, just like many of their other dishes. Unfortunately, I can't say that the food tasted of higher quality for the price. The broth tasted like mostly nothing with maybe a hint of salt, soy sauce, and/or vegetable broth. It tasted extremely light, which in this case was not because the ingredients were fresh, it was because perhaps there was lack of components making up the broth. The noodles were pretty good as they were thin, non-gooey, and were pretty smooth-tasting. They tasted like they had a pinch of salt, but besides that was mostly neutral tasting. The bok choy was fresh. Out of everything in the bowl, the bok choy probably tasted the best. From leaf to stem, the texture was mildly crunchy. Probably stemming from the broth, the bok choy tasted like vegetable broth which created a nice layer of vegetable flavor. Lastly, the beef was average at best. The texture was soft, but didn't really have much flavor in it. Given it was probably stir-fried, I would have asked for maybe a bit of soy sauce marinade or perhaps some salt. In all, the individual ingredients were decent. In cohesion, the ingredients did not want to come together. I would give the Beef Noodle Soup at Silver House a 2/5 mainly for the price-to-portion ratio and the lack of general flavor. At 13 dollars, you can definitely find a better noodle soup of this kind. I was hoping the quality of the food would justify the price and lack of portion, but that was not the case. I will give Silver House the benefit of the doubt for many reasons though. First, as I mentioned before, Silver House does not specialize in noodle soups, they specialize in more traditional Cantonese plate dishes and banquet food. Secondly, I got the food as a takeout order and not in-restaurant, which means the portion size will have to be dwindled down regardless of what the dish is due to takeout. If coming to Silver House, I'd recommend to stick with the their specialties! read more

Don't confuse this restaurant from Silver Lake Restaurant, which is just across the street on El Camino. They are both Chinese restaurants, but serve different menus. I like fried chicken, so what I like about Silver House is their Deep Fried Chicken, which is fried in the Chinese way, i.e. without flour batter, so it ends up being crispy on the outside without all that batter. I have done take-out for this dish and it still stays crispy after bringing it home. 1 star off: Other dishes are just so-so. In Olympics analogy, they are bronze medals, not exactly silver medals. read more

We haphazardly came into this restaurant after flying in from our vacation from the airport, initially looking forward to Pho Element. Since they were closed and we were famished, we decided to just check out this restaurant. It was around 2:00p.m on a Sunday, so there were only a few other parties in there. The server rushed us a bit to order because she said the kitchen crew was going on a lunch break. We ordered whatever sounded good and got served pretty quick. I guess the kitchen crew needed to have their lunch as much as we did. The service was OK, not exceptional, but it was an easy dine-in experience. The food was really good and the servers were quick. I used to frequent this restaurant regularly when I lived in the area and it was always super busy. I haven't gone in about 8 years and the quality has really diminished. There was only 2 tables occupied at 1pm, so that was a sign that this restaurant has lost their way. My favorite dish that used to be chock full of mushrooms; Chicken with double mushrooms is now mostly vegetable filler. There used to be plenty of mushrooms and chicken. When we want traditional comfort Chinese food this is our spot. We are coming to this place for the last 16 years. And just today we asked the Server how many years he's been working here because I recognize him since day one and he said more than 25 years. Woow!! Always very friendly fast and good service. And very yummy yummy food. They have lunch and dinner specials all the time that are very economic. That normally includes a soup an appetizer, some kind of rice and 1 or 2 main dishes depends of how many persons in your party. But this time we decide just to order from the regular menu. They always offer you fresh brew tea. No extra cost. The food is fresh, no greasy, no after taste, no heavy for the stomach. They also have live fish for the one who like super duper fresh dishes. This place serves authentic and delicious Chinese food. Food is served hot and fast. Service is courteous, quick, and their personnel have been there for decades. They know their frequent customers and what they usually order from the menu. They have a reasonably priced set of "Lunch Menu" aside from their regular ala carte menu. I believe their food prices are reasonable considering the quality and taste. Agood Chinese friend of mine introduced me to this place and ever since then, I have been their regular customer. Most of the time, tables are full of Chinese customers, so I believe this is proof enough of good Chinese food. They are open almost everyday of the year, holiday or no holiday. They have lunch specials 11am-3pm on the weekdays, so I ordered the Mongolian beef and lemon chicken lunch specials. Both were ready quickly. Both were pretty tasty, but I think the portion size was 70% rice. They give a LOT of rice. Enough that I could probably split it into 3 servings. I like that the put the sauce for the lemon chicken in a separate container to prevent the chicken from getting messy/soggy. Overall I thought the food was okay. That may be because the food was good and I was hungry or, in actuality, they were on the smaller side. Overall, a solid Chinese spot. I've only had takeout from this place so I can't speak to what the dining experience would be, but it's solid Cantonese food with a massive menu and wall specials written in Chinese. Location: Conveniently on El Camino Real but unfortunately on a pretty busy stretch that is difficult to park on. Some of the side streets are probably easier to find a spot (and chances are you won't have to walk that far), but attempting to stop and parallel park on ECR itself would be a nuisance. Food: Quat Del chow fun -- my favorite item -- it's not true Char Kuei Teow (Malaysian flat rice noodle) as I've known it made by Malaysians but it's more like a cross between Singapore Rice Noodle with curry flavor and cha-shao roast pork with the wide noodles used in classic Kuei Teow recipes. Taro and Chicken clay pot -- from wall menu -- tender cooked chicken in a wine flavored gravy, delicious over rice Hunan hong shao (red-cooked) eggplant -- super flavorful and a big portion. Just a hair spicy. Goes better over rice because it's kind of heavy but I could eat this as is. Overall -- love Cantonese food and other places on this stretch have closed in the past so glad to see this place is still open. read more
