The food here is authentic and delicious. It's only my second time in a row and each time I have come things appear to be consistent. The previous uploaded photos are on point. No need for me to duplicate what was already captured. The personality seems to be less welcoming than I am use to. No smiles, no real connections- (to illustrate this) while writing this review the person who fills the to go orders saw that a patron who just walked out forgot a part of her order on the counter. Had he sparked a conversation and made sure she was complete this could have been avoided. But again if this is not apart of the cultural expectation then carry on. The food is still the BOMB! Went to order take out, it was 8:10. Two older employees were at the register counting receipts. I asked if I could order some dishes to take out......the older gentleman (I use the term out of respect) was VERY RUDE and said very unfriendly and unapologetically, "we're closed, we closed at 8 o'clock!!" I was done with place after 15 years. I did call back by phone, the woman said in a more cordial, soft tone that they were closed and apologetically explained, "we closed at 8 but will extend the hours later". She just hung up. May come back hopefully never see that man EVER AGAIN. Customer service is great with Ming and young lady, otherwise they act like customer is lucky to get their food. Came by for a weeknight dinner the other night since Hong Kong Restaurant in Palo Alto was closed by the health department due to rodents... The restaurant was surprisingly 85% full during the peak dinner rush! Meal started off with a complimentary soup. The Beef Pan-fried noodles were very tasty with no weird oil aftertaste. Beef quality was decent too. The sauce complemented the dish very well. Moved on to the Oyster Pork Belly clay pot that consisted of a half-dozen decent-sized oysters and flavorful pork belly. The shitake mushrooms and fried tofu was decent too. Portions were generous and service by the staff was great...they even recognized me! Meal ended with a complimentary dessert, taro tapioca pudding. ~$15/head after tax and tip with enough leftovers for another person! read more

My bf and I went to Silver House for an early dinner last week on a friend's recommendation, a Chinese friend. We read the Yelp reviews before we went and as a result, chose a clay pot and the roast duck. Well, my salt chicken and fish tofu clay pot was pretty good but the cut of 'roast duck' they gave us was really roast fat. There was almost no meat on the 'half' bird. Our biggest disappointment other than the roast fat - we were looking forward to try the 'complimentary' soup and dessert that other Yelpers mentioned but, none was forthcoming. I guess we weren't Chinese enough to receive the 'free soup and dessert' treatment. I wonder how people would react if Italian restaurants started only giving free stuff to the Italian patrons? Not good. I was about to say something but I noticed the only other table didn't have the free stuff either so I thought possibly they'd just stopped doing it. (I try to give benefit of the doubt.) This can't be true though because I looked and very recent Yelp reviews talk about it. We don't mind bad service when everyone's getting the same, bad service. This preferential service though is irritating. Weird cause our server wasn't too bad to our face... anyway, now we'll just never go back. It's a shame because once we find a joint we like, we're loyal patrons and great tippers. For example, we go to our favorite sushi joint at least once a week. Having a family friend who happens to be a regular here, I find myself returning here periodically throughout the years. And one word that I can definitely use to describe this place is: consistent. Everything that I experienced on my first visit was exactly how I experienced it on my latest visit. Silver House has been opened at this location for quite a few years, and judging from the outdated décor, and grimy looking flooring, I'm pretty sure it has never been updated since opening. If you park in their tiny back parking lot, you'll enter the restaurant from their back entrance, which looks more like an employee only exit and leads right past their kitchen. While it may initially seem like you've ventured into an area of the restaurant that patrons are not allowed in, fret not for you are on the right path! Continue to push on and you'll find yourself in the dining area to be seated. The food here is Cantonese style and for the most part, really delicious. I'm personally not such a big fan of their clay pots, but the rest of their dishes are quite tasty and according to our Cantonese friends, actually authentic. Service here is not exactly rude, but certainly very rushed. Typical Chinese restaurant style service where it's more about efficiency than pleasantries. Patrons here seem to generally consist of families and older crowds. Overall, not a bad place to order take out or if you are with a small group of friends. We decided to check out an "old haunt" from the time we lived on the Peninsula. It's been over ten years but the decor hasn't changed one bit. We ordered a couple standbys: Fook Yuen fried rice, mixed seafood and veggie, and decided to try the lap cheong clay pot. The food came out quickly but wasn't very hot and cooled quickly. The fried rice and seafood veggie were good but the clay pot was a miss for us -- most of this dish was cooked onions. Service was friendly. Prices reasonable. A big plus that they don't use much MSG in their dishes, if at all. Only giving this place one star because I can't give them any less on Yelp. Even though their hours say through to 9:30pm on Monday nights, we came in at 8:50pm to order take out and the guy at the front handed us menus to look at what we wanted and then a few minutes later said that the kitchen was closed so after I began to walk out and said thank you he said if you want to order you have to order now. It was very rude. I can confirm that if you come in 30 minutes to an hour before they say they close on Yelp then they will treat you poorly. The food wasn't the best Chinese food I've had in the peninsula. I was craving Cantonese food after landing at SFO from a recent trip. So I turned to my trusty yelp app to find this place. There's some parking in the back, I think. It's unmarked spaces near the back entrance. Not sure if these are for employees but we parked here. There's also street parking right in front. And the residential streets adjacent the little strip mall has some parking but it's also pretty busy. It wasn't super busy in the middle of the afternoon but there were some groups in there. And we saw quite a few take out orders also. They speak both Cantonese and Mandarin as well as English. We got some complimentary tea, Anyways I got the house special chow mein with the HK style fried noodles. And the bf got the BBQ pork fried rice. My chow mein dish was great. It totally hit the spot. The noodles partly crunchy and parts had gravy. It was topped with fish, shrimp, chicken, BBQ pork, squid and veggies. The fried rice was fine - average. Silver House is a comfort Southern Chinese Style cooking, originating mainly from Guandong Province in China. The taste buds here are simple dishes and clean to the palate; meaning you can really taste the robust flavor of the "cooking pot" (guō) or "wok" especially dishes like beef and vegetables. I really love their Garlic Pea Sprouts. They are famous for this dish here. Also, their Clams with Black Bean Sauce is just excellent. They cook them just right and never overcooked. If you can read Chinese or have a friend who can, point them to order at the wall. The wall menu has a good variety of authentic Southern Chinese Style cooking, with huge servings and better pricing too. After your meal, don't forget to request for their tapioca dessert. They make them fresh everyday I was told. Service here is quick. When they see you are done, they quickly take it away. Somehow with Yummy World next door closed for vacation this week (or for whatever reason), the food at Silver House tasted especially good during a visit over the weekend. And I'm not talkin' bout M$G. Likewise the cheapsters who preferred value with a lil quality (and the crystallized flavor enhancements) had no choice but to mosey over to Silver House, and thus the place was packed again. Why flog a dead horse, this place's secret to success is not really a secret. And that is, execute really well and consistently but not fantastically. This is done so that the bar is not set so high that will raise expectations and standards (like Koi Palace: the bigger the bar, the harder the fall) and you have a place that will very likely stick around for years to come (and still get heavily visited by locals, regulars, Cantonese expats). A few words to the wise: Mmm (Ho) Lok Mei Dzing = hold the M$G, yo / don't put dat chit in please. Dems da magic wurds to the waiter when you put in the order. Otherwise it might get used by the chef if you don't specify. And that's where the reviews go north and south. I'm sure you can request in English too. No M$G = no flavor? Well these guys didn't stick around 20++ years for nothing. They can still kick ass without it. Daily house soup is the classical Cantonese "lo foh tong", stewed for hours with multiple ingredients, and it fweakin hits the spot. Ours was pork ribs/bones, veg, seaweed, peanuts where even the solids retained a ton of flavor and a delight to the bite. A very thick nourishing stock with natural sweetness, that rivals (or at times surpasses) the run of the mill cheap Cantonese along Taraval, Noriega (ie what I call Sunset Cantonese). In fact you can think of Silver House to be similar to Sunset Cantonese, except at a higher refinement level (and pricier entrees, we're talking $9 to $16 depending on the dish). Probably the only Canto joint in town where slow fire stewed soup is included in the bill (along with dessert soup). Too many things on the menu of course. I tend to avoid the Chinese American or Americanized items, or things that don't fall on my palette radar. Then there's the Chinese placard menu that's generally quite good, and the white board menu (left side in Chinese is the good stuff, the right side in English can be hit and miss and are mostly different) Steamed pork patty with scallions and conpoy (dried scallops) - comfort food, nom da stuff with rice. Good solid Cantonese does not have to be high end seafood extravaganza. This is in the same category as steamed egg custard (with or without clams) or "jing shui daan". Stuff that is fundamental but at times hard to nail down if you try to DIY. Fu Yu Jieu Si Tong Choy (fermented tofu paste, chili pepper/jalapeno stir fried water spinach/ong choy) - $12 but this was one of the best ong choy/hollow stem veg preps I've ever had. Specials white board (Chinese) item, so ask to translate, or bring a Chinese reader with you. Chinese white board special menu item and they might be able to make it on the spot even if not listed: Fujian bamboo steamer tofu (Fuk Keen Lung Jai Dou Fu)...humongous pieces of soft tofu drenched in magic sauce with finely minced pork, peas (yes a bit of an oddity), some shrimp. Almost like Fujian fried rice, but w/o the rice. Comfort food yet again. On the Chinese only placard menu, there's a $19 sizzling iron plate sea bass (could also be rock cod) filet with scallions. They debone the fish completely, so all you are left with are chunks of fish with the skin on that almost taste like fluffy fish phat with a slippery smooth skin. Most claypot dishes here kick ass. For something more adventurous and down to earth, perhaps try the fish belly + roast pork + garlic claypot. Heck most claypot items can be requested off menu within reason . Don't like salted fish? Try the chicken tofu claypot and request no salted fish, it takes on another dimension of its own. Still no recent signs of steamed razor clams of the Atlantic variety with the dope ass jalapeno steamed fish style soy dip sauce, but when it does make its majestic appearance on the Chinese white board, it is absolutely not to be missed. Again the owner/manager/cashier is of the serious cat type. But don't worry, you don't come here for him and he probably knows that. Oh yeah do not go during lunch. The tofu pot was yummy as well but it was too much for me to finish so I took the rest with me. I think I only ate half of it. The one negative is that I forgot to ask that no MSG be put in this time, even though they said they had to put some in when I asked last time. This time, since I didn't ask, I immediately felt the stereotypical effects as we ate. Dry mouth, headache, fatigue, etc. Loved the taste of the food, but I'd rather have it a tad more bland without the MSG effects. Will make sure to make that request next time. -1 stars for that, but I still think the food is amazing and MSG, is used quite commonly in many cuisines when used in moderation. As a San Mateo County native, my family has been frequenting this restaurant for as long as I can remember, + we have never been disappointed. They continually serve our favorite dishes with fast service and consistency that keeps us coming back for more. They have an expansive menu so there's no lack of new dishes to try, + yes, we do often order special dishes off that whiteboard on the wall as well. As with most Chinese places, all the dishes are made for family-style eating, + there's always plenty to go around for a decent price. We usually get 4-5 dishes for the 4 of us + are quite satisfied! As mentioned in other reviews, do be sure to arrive early to avoid a long wait and better your chances of finding parking! This restaurant does serve free house soup + red bean tapioca dessert if you know to ask or speak Cantonese. Our favorite dishes that are worth Yelping about: * MINCED CHICKEN AND SQUAB WITH LETTUCE CUPS - the minced meat is juicy and mixed in with the typical snippets of veggies, shitake mushrooms, etc. they give about 5-6 lettuce cups to wrap the meat and slather sauce over; plus there's usually extra meat! * PAN FRIED PORK CHOP WITH SALT AND PEPPER - if you're a fan of salt and pepper chicken wings, you'll definitely love this dish! the thin, golden pork chop pieces range in size from a few inches to several inches long, + most of the pieces contain bone that you'll have to eat around. i love the crispy flavor and how it's not too chewy as one might expect. a bit on the greasy side, but it's worth it! * PEKING DUCK WITH BUNS - this is my favorite dish! for 4 of us, we usually order a half duck + a couple extra buns since there's definitely extra meat to go around. the large platter comes with the sliced juicy duck meat, crispy skin, 4 fluffy warm buns, plum sauce, + scallions. perhaps i'm biased since i LOVE duck in general, but this dish always just hits the spot for me. the duck, itself, is never scrawny or dry; they prepare it just right every time! * PRAWNS WITH WALNUTS - love the contrast of the soft prawns with the crunch of the walnuts. the prawns are quickly fried so they have a nice coating on them + aren't soggy or drenched in the light mayonnaise-like sauce. the honey walnuts are fresh and crunchy, and they aren't coated in the sauce so they keep their own sweet flavor separate. * ROCK COD FILLET WITH TENDER GREENS - this is one of our family favorites wherever we go. silver house makes this wonderfully as a medley of good-sized fish chunks mixed in with bok choy + snippets of various other veggies. the sauce is a bit on the oily side, but then again, this is a fish dish so it's a given. the fish breaks nicely along the grain, + has a nice smooth texture in your mouth. * SLICED CHICKEN WITH GINGER AND SCALLION - this dish recently became a favorite of my mom's because the chicken is so tender that it melts in your mouth. the highlight of the meat is pretty much this texture, + most of the flavor is in the sauce so make sure to dip your chosen morsel a few times before enjoying. we usually get 1/2 a chicken, + it's enough. * STEAMED EGG OVER GROUND PORK - we ordered this for a while until my dad started making it back at home, + it tasted practically the same, haha! the egg is fluffy thick like tofu + layered on top of a layer of ground pork on the bottom. the salty sauce and pork was a nice balance to the otherwise pretty plain taste of the egg layer. i recommend mixing the layers together a bit in your plate so you can taste that balanced fusion in your mouth with each bite. * STIR FRY BEEF AND ASPARAGUS - yummy dish with black bean sauce that goes well over rice or can be eaten alone. the beef is of good bite-sized pieces and pretty tender. most of the asparagus pieces are cooked just right so that they're crunchy yet still soft. one thing we didn't like was how they use the whole asparagus shoot + so some of the pieces can be pretty thick + thus a bit tough. * STIR FRY CRAB WITH GINGER AND SCALLIONS - very yummy, but pricey as well! silver house cooks the crab perfectly so that the crab meat is sweet + tasty yet the shell is just soft enough to crack without too much effort. the dish is served on a large platter with the joint, leg, + claw pieces cut for easy eating. the sauce and flavor is present but not too strong that it masks the natural sweet taste of the crab meat itself. i don't remember how much it was... but it's worth trying at least once when crab is in season! * SWEET AND SOUR PORK - it's your typical fare of this pretty Americanized dish. nice meaty chunks of pork are deep fried well and are coated in thick sauce along with pineapple, peppers, etc. i don't recall this dish being particularly special, but it's good.
