Just had the most awesome brunch experience. Would've been an hour wait since no reservation, but lucked upon a first come first serve bar table for the two of us. Bar staff waits on these, but a server, Jessica, was waking by and took care of us because so busy. She took our order and continued to check on us even though not her station- she said we take care of each other. The bar server was too. Very friendly form the hostess stand to the bar. And omg the best meal ever for a brunch. I had the Tuscan burrata toast and my daughter had the burger. The seemingly was great and reasonable- $7. Our Entrees were less than $15 and so filling. My first visit to Silver left me underwhelmed. Perhaps they don't want well-dressed women over 60 as customers, but my dog could provide better service than I received this week. First, I asked for a more secluded table. But the staff person leads me to a table which she deemed secluded because "there are not many diners at this time." I attempted to ask for coffee and water before she fled back to her podium, but she appeared not to hear my request. BTW, she told me which side of the table I should sit at "so I could see the other members of my party." She must have thought 60 years equals the mentality of a five-year-old. For the next five minutes, I attempted to gain the attention of a waiter to order coffee and water while waiting for my guests. However, the manager, about 10 ft. away, was intently conversing with two wait staff eating breakfast. Finally, a waiter approached my table and mumbled the assigned waiter had walked away from his station. Clearly, he was attempting to cover for service lapse. The not-so-hot coffee arrives with a tiny cute creamer. Perhaps Silver should sell those to reduce its overhead. When my order of an English muffin and fresh fruit arrives, I find that fresh fruit at Silver means fruit that looks a tiny bit better than fruit cocktail from a can. Clearly, the fruit has been fresh at one time, but not in the last 24 hours. My English muffin showed no signs of being toasted. The foil-wrapped butter had left cold storage only seconds before serving as it was impossible to spread. The waitperson offered to bring the tiny containers of jam that he had forgotten earlier. These items were so tasteless that I have no memory of eating them. I left more than half of the fresh fruit because I could not force myself to eat. Refills on our coffee appeared once during the 75-minute meal. Does this restaurant understand that coffee at breakfast is supposed to be hot? Apparently not. The best I can say that we were not rushed during our meal. Will I be back again?--only if someone else is picking up the tab. read more

I ate at Silver today and was served by Taylor. She was very friendly and happy to help. I was unsure of what to order since it was my first time and Taylor was very patient while I decided. She even offered suggestions on which items on the menu she thought were best. I decided to get the crab cakes and the food was great. I will definitely be coming back here again and hopefully can be served by Taylor again. read more

Terrible service. Tried dining outside and booked a reservation for the patio in advance. When we arrived we gave up our seats for two older women so they could dine by the fire pit and waited for another table while it was being cleaned. After wait staff members finished cleaning the table we were standing right next to, one of the wait staff members proceeded to seat another pair of diners who arrived after us at the table we were waiting for. The staff member was well aware we were waiting for the table she just finished cleaning since we were standing there while she was cleaning it. I told her we were waiting for the table and she proceeded to seat the diners at another table. No apology and once seated we were left waiting in the cold with non-working heat lamps. After ten minutes, the waiters never appeared to take our orders. We left this establishment and dined at Cactus Cantina where they provided pleasant and prompt service. read more

I've had lunch there several times. The food is OK, but don't get a burger -- small patty, not a lot of taste (I'm from the Midwest, where we know our beef), tomato slice not even ripe yet. Salads are better. Service can be slow, at least indoors. The supposedly "Art Deco" look is sleek, but also rather chilly. The layout is very spread out and when I've been there for lunch, no matter where I've sat it feels like eating in Siberia. (It didn't help when, at my last visit, they sat me at a table for 4 instead of at one of the available smaller ones and left all the table settings there, as if to emphasize that I was alone. Not cool.) Maybe there are more people at breakfast or dinner, which would help the ambience. At any rate, it's not awful, but there are more positively pleasant places in the neighborhood. read more

The interior is classy and attractive. The menu looks delicious but the taste is then just kind of "meh" - good, with a shrug. Nothing special. Nothing offensive. I had the apple cider chicken risotto. Good, but the description sounded much tastier than it was. My husband got the duck ragu special which also sounded awesome but fell a little short. It was pretty good. The best thing was the blue cheese and kale salad to start. That was very good. The service was good. Overall an average experience. Probably won't go back with all the great restaurants to choose from in the city. read more

WATCH OUT FOR DOUBLE/TRIPLE BILLING WHEN PAYING WITH CREDIT CARD! Husband and daughter went there for breakfast, waited for a table, ended up sitting at the counter. Waitress rang up bill initially including two other people sitting next to them at the counter. Husband immediately rejected the bill and told the waitress that it was wrong. She took bill, and rang up correct amount. When he got home he happened to check our bank account online, and was shocked to see that she had charged his credit card for both the higher amount AND the correct amount. Called manager, and got the runaround, still waiting for them to cancel the first charge! Be very careful with your credit card at this location. read more

Wow! Imagine finding a lovely Art Deco space with great food, professional staff and a highly competent and friendly chef walking distance from the National Cathedral. The Brassiere feel with the creative American menu makes you want to linger and enjoy. We come for breakfast and lunch, both social and business occasions. Great personal attention with a large group, too. Ask and you most likely will get it - the kitchen and staff are very accommodating! Fun for every day meetings or a weekend treat. Was pleasantly surprised by my first trip to silver to eat. I'd been a few times for drinks and wasn't blown away TBH. Food however was fantastic. Went at 2pm on a Saturday for lunch and it was pretty empty. I ordered the salad grain bowl thing with salmon and it was incredible. The lemon tart for dessert was a real treat. Service was great and everyone at the table left satisfied. For some reason I thought the food here would be "heavy" (maybe because it's a diner?) but it was just right...filling yet doesn't weigh you down. I love how they have a board with the local farmers they source from...great transparency and ethical sourcing! read more

I live in the neighborhood and have been there a few times now. The service has been very shaky, requiring me to seek the manager's assistance multiple times. The food consistently comes out wrong. And the menu is quite limited. For the price point it delivers well under the mark. It needs to work out some serious kinks before I'd consider returning. read more

Having experienced several new restaurants pop up in this popular foodie area of DC, I was hoping Silver would be like the other diners in the chain...great service with reliable, fun food. Biggest complaint = service. They cannot get it right! Wine was served to me and not my guest, who had to wait 20 minutes for her glass. Plates were not cleared after 1/2 hour, we had to stack them because no one bused them...then they asked "are you finished"? When I asked for more bread for the hummus dip (you get six small pieces on the plate), they brought me another order of hummus with six pieces of bread, then more bread on another plate! I did not want the second order, and did not pay for it. Service is friendly, but they are totally disorganized, leave you waiting too long, and the food is very salty...especially the crab cakes and fries. It's like a comedy of errors, more attention to detail and less talking among the staff...even at the bar, we found they were chatting about personal things and we waited too long for drinks. They need to get it together, there are many places nearby...including The Grilled Oyster...that are superior in all ways. read more

The Silver Diner on Wisconsin is expensive and the service is mediocre. They don't offer very good vegan or vegetarian options. I had a bowl of soup, a small plate of hummus, and two drinks: $35. Food was good and staff all friendly but something at the management level here is going wrong. After we complained, we were offered free desserts---all good--but that did not make up for our guests sitting for much too long waiting for dinner to arrive. We came the week it open for lunch and were very impressed. So a few days later decide to come back for dinner. We brought some of our foodie friends as well. They had wonderful outdoor music, no wait time, the interior is a throwback compliment to the art deco style right down to what the servers wore. There is one bartender who is just amazing. I believe her name is Salimaa. Went to Silver for the first time on my lunch break. I sat at the bar and Salimaa approached me. She was super nice, well versed on the menu, and was able to explain to me certain ingredients that I wasn't sure of. She was very personable and made me comfortable, as I am new in town, and does not really know anyone. The food was MEDIOCRE but the drinks and conversation was amazing. I've visited Silver on several occasions. I'm in the area often my sons attend school near the restaurant. On two occasions I've experienced the WORSE customer service. The first incident involved me asking that my food be made again because it was cold. The kitchen crew complained to each other about their dissatisfaction with having to make the dish again. As they complained they used profanity to express their frustration. My husband and I were close enough to hear the conversation. We reported to the manager who compensated our meal and promised to provide more training for his staff. Today, May 28 ... my son and I had a 10:45 reservation. We arrived a few minutes early and was seated near the cashier register. I expressed that I'd like a different seat due to the traffic level near the register. I was told there were no other options. I looked around and there were several seating options. I asked for a booth. I was told the booth was reserved for a reservation that was coming in 15-20 minutes later. I shared with the Hostess, "just like those customers I too had a reservation." She informed my only option was the table near the register. What was frustrating about this experience was I being denied a table for people who hadn't arrived, the Caucasian couple that came in before me was accommodated with the seat they requested, and the wait area was empty! There were no other families waiting to be seated. The hostess and floor manager made a choice not to accommodate me. I feel strongly that I was treated differently this morning because of who I am (a black mother with her black son). A kind waiter tried to help, but my son and I left. I called back and spoke with the floor manager who wasn't helpful at all. She said hold on and gave the phone to another manager who listened, was apologetic,and acted as if he understood my concerns. They've asked for another chance ... 2 strikes your out. Silver please train your staff ... all people regardless of race should be treated equally. You should accommodate all patrons the same. read more

Went to Silver last night for a friend's birthday, and we all loved it. I got the cauliflower steak. It comes with (getting this from menu) "red curry kale, garbanzos, roasted butternut squash, quinoa, fire roasted pepper sauce, peanuts." Wow, it was excellent. I'm not usually a very fancy/sophisticated eater, and I wasn't sure I would even like this entree, but there was no ingredient I would add, subtract, or change the proportion of. It was perfect. For dessert, I got the lemon tartlet, which is described as "vegan lemon creme, blackberries, thyme" in a crust that was maybe made with powdered sugar, and everything about it was excellent -- excellent crust baked/browned just the right amount, fantastic lemon cream filling, and even the blackberries were really good blackberries -- tangy with a lot of flavor. I'm not quite gourmet enough to appreciate the thyme garnish on top, but I just ate it first, and it's not as if it had flavored the rest of the tartlet or anything. Yum. The service was also flawless--polite, timely with everything, refilling water without being asked, letting us sit and talk for 3 hours. Thank you Silver! read more

I wanted to love this place because we live across the street. We first went for an anniversary celebration brunch at 8 a.m. on a Sunday in October and it was a real mess: our server said there were waitstaff no-shows (which the manager later denied), food took more than half an hour to arrive, and we were invited to order alcoholic drinks, and after 20 minutes of waiting for them we were informed they weren't allowed to serve alcohol at that time yet. The food was just ok. We were given a comp certificate for breakfast for two, so we gave them another chance today. Again, at 8 a.m. we were one of just a few tables in the large restaurant. Still, service was slow despite a large number of staff hanging around. Food again took about half an hour to arrive, and after we asked for the check it was 5-10 minutes between when the server brought it and when she came back for our card. Our breakfast for 2 comp played out as one entree removed from the bill. I'm not sure what's missing from the team here to make things better, but unless you have a lot of time on your hands then I can't recommend this place. read more

For the 3rd time, last night (1/9/18) we had an inept bartender -- he delivered a wrong drink, forgot to make us our martinis, made a lousy martini (too much vermouth), never came over to inquire whether we needed more of anything after the dinner was served, delivered our checks only after repeatedly asking for it. Good morning, I visited Silver on Monday 6/4/18 around 11 am. I ordered food To-Go. I was told I could sit at the bar while I wait for my food. As I sat there I had to listen to vulgar language and jokes being said by the gentleman sending the food out to all the tables. I believe his name was Ed or something or another. My order was up in the window. The young lady who I believe was the bartender asked the young man (Ed) if he could bag my food up, and he replied well what are you doing that's not my job. He called the young lady out her name as she walked away. They were literally arguing right in front of me over who would bag my food. Once I got my food I just left. I was disgusted at the language and the experience. I live in the neighborhood but will not be coming back to silver! I don't want to be contacted, please just do better!!!! read more

This has become our go to neighborhood joint. As parents of young kids it is hard to find a place that balances kid and grown up needs. When silver first opened they were ok, but I feel like they have really gone out of their way to become both family friendly and also high quality with superior service. To be fair, we often come off hours for early dinner or breakfast but the last few times, the menu has really gotten quite creative and interesting and the service is great (all of my servers the last few visits have been really attentive and kind). As a mostly vegetarian/pescatarian I'm almost overwhelmed with options. Even the kids menu is super high quality. On many occasions mangers will check in and ask us how we like the menu and restaurant in general and it is clear they are trying to appeal to the neighborhood and families. I will say I think it's also probably a great place to go without kids on the later shift, I just wouldn't know that! Thanks, we will keep coming! read more

Came in over the weekend for brunch on Saturday with a friend and sat at the bar. I was surprised to find such friendly bartenders singing and having fun with the guests. Sarah and Aesha were amazing! Another guest was singing and they joined in, knew their food and drinks and their service to us was amazing. The food took a little longer than expected to reach us but we didn't mind, both ladies were attentive to us. What a great experience... come Saturday for brunch and sit at the bar for these ladies. I was here just to have a few drinks and although the place in nice and new the bar service is horrendous. A total of 4 people at bar and the 3 bartenders are oblivious to what is going on around them. Spending time filling up garnishes vs looking to see what customers are waiting for a drink. Absolutely no acknowledgment of customers. No greeting , no smiles. I guess they think that business is going to fall into their lap and therefore no need to provide service. Really bad. read more
