I am mostly pleased with Simply Solar. I've been with them for 2 years now. The only issue I had was that our inverter went out April 13th, 2020 shortly after the start of the shutdown, so we went 2 months without solar production. Once they were allowed to, they installed a new inverter as well as breaker switches for free. However, it's not their policy to provide any sort of refund for the lost hours of no energy production. This would obviously apply to PG&E shutdowns as well since we're tied into their system. I would assume that's typical for most solar companies, but would be a good question to ask if you're currently looking. One wonderful bright spot is Sara who works through customer issues. I had been interested in getting solar panels installed for a quite a while, but my experiences with the sales people that hang out at the big box hardware stores always led me to believe that my house wasn't a good candidate because my roof wasn't brand new. Then, a friend referred me to David Frank at Simply Solar and I'm really glad that she did. David drove all the way out to my house in Oakland and helped me to look at the numbers behind a few different scenarios so that I could have all the facts, do the math for myself, and make an informed decision. Best of all, he mentioned an incredible program where, in the event that my older roof ever does need replacing, they will come out, take the panels down, wait for the roof swap, and the reinstall them free of charge for up to ten years! Amazing. I was happy to sign up, and they helped me through every step of the process including the roof survey, tax credits and setting up my new power plan with PG&E. I called Tom Bickford to ask about a notification from PG&E that the AC Disconnect switch on our solar system was potentially defective and a safety hazard. Tom took the time to physically check the switch and then to contact the manufacture and researched ways to test it. The next day he came back to our house and successfully tested the switch to determine it was not defective putting our minds at ease. If you rate Simply Solar based on Tom's passion for good customer service, you have to give it 5 or more stars. His knowledge about solar products is vast and he is very honest and creditable. If we ever need to upgrade our system or add on to it Simply Solar is going to be on the top of our list of choices of companies. read more

So, i spent a couple of YEARS doing my due diligence on this one. We have an oddball power provider, so that made things a LOT trickier than it would be with PG&E. I had gotten appraisals via the larger technology providers like Solar City, but never got satisfactory answers on implementation. This was a big deal, because in addition to the non-PG&E power, we have a cement shingle roof, which being a lifetime (but relatively delicate) roofing material, has some pretty restrictive warranty clauses. As a consequence, i decided to go the opposite route; find a really good installers, and see what products they offered. After scouring yelp, cross referencing the BBB and checking who was properly licensed and so forth, picked Simply Solar. Which turned out to be an excellent choice. i worked with Ryan (seller) and Sara (operations) who, like everyone else i worked with, were incredibly patient, responsive, and did first rate work throughout. Even after the installation (which was pretty quick and painless,) they were alway quick to respond whatever questions i had. We've had our system for three months now, and are extremely happy with it, and their follow up and service. I referred my next door neighbor to Simply Solar and she hired them for roofing and Solar. It's been 7 months since finishing the work. They promised a referral fee of $500. I've called them several times and they have not sent the fee. I'm so sorry I ever worked with them. They dropped my neighbor's roof in my yard with no communication and I had guests at my house that week. It was a huge mess for almost a week. This caused a huge problem between me and the neighbor. All could have been avoided with better planning. They take no responsibility for the problems they caused and refuse to pay me the referral fee. read more

I chose Simply Solar after getting three proposals from other installers. Although the prior installer quoted a lower initial price, he kept nickel and dimeing me, e.g. $400 for racks. Simply Solar was willing to commit to a total installed price, and they stuck by that, even when unexpected costs came up. On top of that, if our roof needed work in the next 5 years, Simply Solar agreed to remove and reinstall the solar panels, one time, for no added cost. We live in Rossmoor. Because we live in a condo, we had an added level of review and inspection compared to owning a home. Simply Solar took care of all of the extra work. In fact, Simply Solar has installed more separate solar installs at Rossmoor than anyone. While I recommend them highly, it is still important to get three proposals for your solar installation. read more

Based on our experience and continued issues with our Roof and Solar project, we recommend you avoid Simply Solar like the plague. Their sales are great, the people on the phone are wonderful, unfortunately the quality of work and actual customer service is exceptionally poor. We've had our system for 20 months, and it has been down for 2.5 months, and we have had to deal with the non responsiveness of their service organization for 5 of those 20 months. We don't write these things, but we feel it is important to warn potential customers. We would not want anyone to have to live through what we continue to have to manage. Basically, our project was poorly managed, damaged our house, roof leaked, and the solar has failed several times (currently down for the second month in less than two years, still cant get a call back), and getting attention, repair, and acknowledgement of the issues has simply been a struggle. We contracted to have simply solar install a roof and solar system in our home, in Belmont, CA, in January 2020. The project was well sold by the business manager, who was helpful, but the project could not have been less professionally executed. The teams were in a hurry and not trained; both roofers and solar installers were out of communication with their project managers, and they had no idea what they were doing when they arrived to get to work. Installers from both teams drove holes into our living room and dining room ceilings, even after showing them that we had a cathedral ceiling and them "trying" not to. How hard should that be for a "professional roofer/solar installer?" Roofed then leaked twice during down pours. When it was finally repaired, the "new roof" looked like a quilt with patches everywhere. The solar installation was equally unprofessional. The panels were not laid out in the original pattern, they were not set to be level with each other, and the installers slopped glue all over the new roof and posts of the solar footings. We had to clean up the mess, paint the areas to hide the slop, and make the project look even mildly presentable. Looks like something my kids would have made when they were 4 years old. The installers never looked in the house to see that we had cathedral ceilings, and put anchors right through into our living room and dining room. This was after the roofers had done the same thing and we in-person and in-real time pointing out that we had cathedral ceilings, and where the beams were located. They just nodded, and went on and put more anchors through the roof, splitting the wood in our ceilings. They finally came out to repair it, and basically tried to fill it with silicon. We ended up having to repair the boards in the ceiling ourselves. We had to fight hard to get any kind of damages from the messed up project, and we were successful in getting some recompense for the poor workmanship, damage to our house, and direct labor we had to put into repairing their project. After a few months of having the panels we were monitoring the production using the App. We noticed one panel was not producing as much as the others. Not sure if this were normal, we called Simply Solar service to check. They ran a diagnostic and firmware upgrade from their shop and WHAM the whole system went down. It then took 6 weeks to get it repaired! They started with the inverter board, nope, then the whole inverter. Each time, they would not schedule repair UNTIL the part was in their shop: so order time, shipping time, scheduling time, wait for the installer.....whoops that didn't work, lets try that again, 6 weeks of July and August power, lost. The business manager, out of embarrassment was kind enough to write a personal check. Company "does not cover loss from equipment malfunction" (even it may be a result of improper installation?). Now, less than 12 months later, we noticed a yellow light on the inverter. Checked the app, and hey, solar has been non-functional for two weeks! Turns out, its the inverter, again! They will order the parts, will schedule, once the parts arrive, but please be patient, our repair staff are very busy. I bet they are! The part is now in and we cant even get on the schedule. No one will return our call or actually put us on the schedule to have it repaired. Send emails, get a response: "We have received your message and your request is important to us. We will respond as quickly as possible - likely within the next 48 business hours, though we do occasionally experience a backlog; when that happens it may take an extra day or so. We thank you in advance for your patience." If you are not looking to test your patience, look elsewhere for a solar company. We really wanted to simply solar to be everything it could be, the execution is just not there. Was hoping we were through this. My dark feeling is that it is just beginning, and that there is something in the original poor installation that is causing the inverter to go down. :( read more

Update: I'm giving Simply Solar one star back because we did finally get our issue resolved. The negative review here was successful in getting a response from them where a dozen calls and emails were not. Within 24 hours of the review being posted, the owner contacted us, confirmed that we were correct in our analysis of the problem, and agreed to send the crew back to replace the microinverters with the correct ones. A couple business days later, they arrived to do the install. Unfortunately, they still didn't get it right, and only replaced 14 out of the 16 inverters, even though we had clearly communicated and shown proof that all 16 were incorrect. This was something we noticed as the crew was finishing up because we checked the monitoring portal, and when we questioned them about it they called the office and were told that yes, they were only supposed to replace 14. We were pretty angry that after all that they STILL weren't giving us what we agreed to up front, and that the onus was on us as the customer to keep catching these mistakes and waste our time micromanaging. I called the owner back immediately to complain and he gave the excuse that the manufacturer had given them incorrect information about the last two inverters. Despite the excuses, he did manage to procure two more of the correct parts and send the crew back again to put them in that same afternoon. The difference in power output of our system from before the part swap is extremely noticeable when looking at the data, so we feel justified in insisting that this be fixed. We remain disappointed that it was such a struggle to get our problem acknowledged and resolved. read more

SS installed an eight-panel system on my condo roof last August. The 2-month HOA permit process was the biggest problem, but that wasn't the fault of SS. It's the nature of the HOA beast! SS got the city permit quickly. Then system installation took only one day. Early on, the converter was malfunctioning, but to their credit, SS fixed it quickly. They were very responsive to issues and questions regarding the system. Since that early fix, the system has been working flawlessly. It didn't work so great this past wet and cloudy winter, but hey it's SOLAR and it if there ain't none, DUH!! But even in the cloudiest of days, it still produces power. Man, I love it when my PG&E bill shows negative -- they owe me! Saving money and helping to save the planet! EPIC! SS has a referral program whereby a customer gets a reward for referring customers to SS. I've done that with two parties and hope to reap the rewards. read more

I have a 14 year old solar system and the inverters started failing with error messages and would need to be rebooted to run for a little while before going into standby mode again. I talked to five solar companies and most wanted to put a new system in, but it would involve removing panels, putting on a new roof and installing a new system. I discussed this with Simply Solar and Jerry discussed the trade-offs and recommended they replace the inverters to maximize the effectiveness of the current system. Jerry came out and installed the inverters and did an excellent job with the constraints of the layout and was very professional and knowledgable. He did an outstanding job. The system is running great and I am happy I saved quite an expense. The salesman, Tom Bickford, listened to our interests well, gave a very professional and complete proposal and details on the equipment and roof mounting system. Their price was very competitive or better than others. And once we had initial proposal, they were responsive to redesign to take better advantage of our roof layout. Once we agreed to proposal, it was just a few weeks until installation started and was completed with just a few visits. During the whole period, anytime we had a question, a call to Tom got a quick answer from him or another technical member of the company. First of all I would like to say that everyone that we encountered at the company has a great attitude and are easy to work with. Everything went smoothly and the work was completed on schedule. Later on, we had a minor problem with something and the company immediately corrected the situation. We researched other Solar companies for our home and finally settled on Simply Solar. My parents went with them too. They were friendly, professional, local and always available for questions throughout the installation process. The products they use are high quality. I felt like a couple of the bigger companies were trying to up sell us a new roof which Simply Solar pointed out we do not yet need. When we do need a new roof, they will come remove the panels and replace them free of charge even if someone else does the roof. But I'll be honest, why would I go with someone else to do our roof? Summing up my experiences with Simply Solar in a few words: Patient, Knowledgeable, Eager We moved into Contempo Marin, a manufactured home community (ok, mobile home park) to downsize our lives. We didn't know that it would UPSIZE our regulatory burden when trying to make any changes to the house. We wanted to move to EV cars and put solar panels on the roof. This began an epic journey with the city, state, HUD, PGE and Jake. He kept us informed continuously and worked with patience throughout the process.
