Felt we were at a tourist trap. The head waiter was kind of pushy. Kept asking us if we want any additional appetizers, drinks, etc. The whole place is very overpriced for what it is. Then 2 of us got our entree switched, and since both was lamb we didn't realize until we had started eating. We told the waiter when he came to ask about desert, he just went "ok". Muhammara was good. Avoid the (cold!) stuffed pepper. Kebab was ok. All in all I have had much better Turkish food in NYC than this, and they don't charge 25 for kebabs and $15 for a glass of wine and then give you the wrong order. read more

I had the lamb osso buco and it was done to perfection. It was on a bed of roasted eggplant which was seasoned nicely. My husband had turkish meatballs which were very tasty as well. I just celebrated my birthday lunch at Sip Sak today. From the moment my sisters, parents and daughter entered we were treated like family. We practiced our Turkish, learned more words, fawned over our favorite Turkish actors ( thank you Netflix) with the beautiful hostess, and enjoyed Efe Raki, and a wonderful Turkish Cabernet. With all the well known spots along 2nd Ave. packed for Mother's Day Brunch, we stopped in here and were very pleasantly surprised with the brunch selection to be had and the excellence of the food. I had eggs with spicy lamb, my wife had an omelet with sauteed onions and cheeses, while my mother in law had to die for French Toast with fresh fruit. The Turkish coffee was great and very similar to an espresso but less bitter..my only complaint was that it could have been a little hotter. I know calves liver is not everyone's favorite, but I love it and haven't had it in years (I don't get it at home). I tried an appetizer portion of it. Livers can be very strong and sometimes tough, but the calves liver here was almost sweet and very tender...not mushy yet tender. All in all a very pleasant surprise...we'll be back to sample dinner soon. read more

What a disappointment and was so looking forward to trying this place. Things were bad from the start. Despite having a reservation, they weren't interested in knowing my name or the time of my reservation. If they had checked, they would have seen that we were there for a birthday. We were rushed into ordering--we weren't even asked if we would like a drink. I had to inquire what the fish of the day was--no daily specials were mentioned-- yet we heard several recited to the table next to us after we ordered. My parents were in town last night, and we decided last minute to go out to eat for dinner. They requested we go to a Middle Eastern restaurant, since they don't often eat that type of cuisine, so we decided to go to Sip Sak. Every single dish that hit our table was fresh, delicious, and gone within minutes. Even the circular sesame seed "bread" they serve in the beginning of the meal was absolutely satisfying. We started with the Eggplant Salad with Eggplant, Garlic Oil and Lemon as an appetizer to share, as well as the special appetizer of the evening which was a delectable Zucchini Pancake, which tasted similar to a Potato Pancake. Both apps were tasty and easy to share. The portion of the appetizers was appropriate, and did not make us feel too full to eat our entrees like some appetizers do. For my entree, I ordered the Shepard's Salad, which had Cucumbers, Peppers, Onions, Tomatoes, Parsley, with an Olive Oil and Lemon Dressing. I ordered Grilled Shrimp on top, and they did not hesitate to accommodate my change to their menu. My salad was light, fresh, crisp and deceivingly filling. My sister ordered the Greek Salad, as did my Mother, with Romaine, Artichokes, Pickles, Aged Sheep's Feta, Heirloom Tomatoes, Olives and Oregano Vinaigrette. If you can't tell, the women in my family are big on salads. We all enjoyed them, and our plates were empty by the end. My Father, the carnivore, ordered the Grilled Lamb Chops, served with Aromatic Rice Pilaf and Mesclun Greens. He cleaned off his plate too. I tried his rice, and it was surprisingly sweet. For dessert, my Father and I had Turkish Coffee. I LOVE Coffee, but had never really tried Authentic Turkish Coffee. It was almost chalky in its texture, but had a very deep and rich taste. It was a silly idea to drink it though, because it was a late dinner and so I was up most of the night from the caffeine. We all also shared their Baklava, which came served in four adorable little squares with a sprinkling of Honey and Pistachios. We also ordered this incredible dessert that was simply Naked Butternut Squash sprinkled with light Sugar, with a dollop of Whipped Cream. I would never think to serve a vegetable as a dessert, but the Butternut Squash was a delightful, subtly sweet end to the meal. Sip Sak was all-in-all a great dining experience. The atmosphere was a little strange. It could use more homey touches, or some more definitive decor. Our waitress had a thick accent and was a bit hard to understand, but she was friendly, smiley and accommodating, which I suppose means more than anything she could have said. read more

Myself and my 2 friends were having a pleasant dinner until about 10 women showed up at the bar adjacent to our table to loudly congregate and wait for a table - apparently they hadn't made a reservation. From that time on we were rushed through the rest of our dinner and given the check before we asked for it, then the manager on duty, a youngish woman (relative of the owner?) hovered around us anxiously waiting for us to pay and leave so that she could seat this loud group. Bottom line she handled the situation poorly; was ungracious and rude. It's short sighted to mistreat loyal customers to accommodate a crowd that didn't have the forethought to reserve. What an ordeal. I went here with my sister last Tuesday (04/02) at around 9pm-- we ordered take-away and as we were waiting for our food, my sister fainted. She fainted because she had donated blood a few hours earlier and hadn't yet eaten a full meal--hence the reason we were ordering take-away. A man came over, who I assume to be the owner because of the way he was bossing everyone around, and assured a worried customer that it was 'due to our lifestyle' that my sister had fainted. If you don't understand what he was accusing us of, as I didn't at first since I was otherwise occupied, he was insinuating my sister fainted because we were drunks. That would have been more than enough, however, he wasn't finished. He then told us that the position I had my sister in was a 'position only good for sex' (everyone knows you're supposed to lay someone down and elevate their legs when they've fainted), how inappropriate and unwarranted. A woman behind the bar said she was going to call 911 and he yelled at her saying, 'did I ask you to call the police?!' My friend who was with us had Teddy grahams so I asked her to give some to my sister, who was sitting on the ground trying to recuperate, and the man accused my friend of feeding her like a dog. Throughout this he kept trying to get us to leave, when my sister couldn't even get up to stand yet, not to mention we were still waiting for our food! What a disgusting man. If this is the way he treats paying customers, I refuse to give him anymore of my business. read more

We have been to SipSak at least a dozen times. The best way to describe their food is authentic, reliable and very tasty, though a bit pricey. Typically we go with the specials or suggestions of the staff. Pleasantly surprised! A lot better than what I'm used to for Turkish food. On Ev's recommendation I had their lemonade and thought it was some bullshit crystal light at first taste but then realized that it wasn't. It was real but they do something different with it. I asked our waiter but he admitted that he was kind of new and didn't know much more than that it was freshly squeezed. I don't know what it was but try it and see if you can figure it out. Even though he was new our waiter managed to give us great service, attending to all the necessary details. He told us the specials but didn't really describe the dishes much. He said there was red lentil soup, grilled sea bass and grilled shrimp. That was it. Soup, soupy! Grilled stuff, grilly! Sounds great! I'll have both! The busboys were on top of their game making sure they replaced anything they needed to as they cleared the first course. My boy knocked over his lemonade and they were right on top of it, manager also, cleaning and wiping, and without even asking came back with a full one. Nicely done. Throughout the meal people came by to make sure we were enjoying everything. In fact, I'm pretty sure every member of the staff stopped by at least once. Do I look like a celebrity or something? Appreciated, though. Unfortunately, it wasn't the waiter's fault that there wasn't much to say about the food, though. The food is incredibly simple (read: boring). I got the salmon entree that they said was NOT farm raised. Atlantic salmon. NOT farm raised. If it's true then this is something they should advertise. Anyway- I was VERY impressed that a place on the UES finally caught on to taking temps on fish dishes when my salmon came out an absolutely PERFECT medium rare as requested. Holy cannoli! So, this is what I got for dinner- Lemonade, a glass of rose (decent and fairly priced), a slab of salmon with a bunch of red cabbage and romaine. Huh? That was all that was on the plate. There was some nondescript vinaigrette on the greens. Salmon, romaine and cabbage. Not what I would call a stimulating flavor package. As far as the most boring food imaginable goes it was done as well as you could reasonably expect, but if this is the best Turkish cuisine has to offer the world then this is why France and Italy kick your asses (culinarily speaking, of course). Decor was pretty nice with exception to the diner-style glass panels with frosted designs held up by polished brass. That made everything else look cheap (which I doubt it was). I am planning on taking my friends and future dates here. The atmosphere drew me in to the restaurant. I love the candle lit romantic soft look of the place. Of course this does not mean its not good for groups. However its not a place for loud sounds. There were few kids with one party but I am not sure if the kids would like the menu. The place it clean, tidy and cozy. Of course with each party they will adjust the table arrangements without disturbing the other dinners. Now for the wine list. I had a glass of the a Italian white wine. I do not remember the name of the wine. If you ever visit here and you are a fan of white wine look at the Italian wines. As we sat down a friendly waiter began to take over order. For an appetizer we had the spinach dip which comes with warm bread. it was so great that we ordered another as we waited for our entrees. Oh man was I hungry. I ordered the salmon and cabbage salad. The salmon was done for perfection and when you add the lemon to it just a small taste of heaven. I also used some lemon juice on cabbage and its was great. My mother had the baba ganoush with type wheat. It was similar to couscous. My god that was so tasty I finished all of it by myself. They have incredible selection of meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Whether it is for lunch or dinner, you will find something that you will like. We had a large party which we made reservations for but servers were overwhelmed, inattentive and slightly rude and at the end of the night the staff was pretty hostile towards us. One of the senior staff members said we were accusing them of overcharging us when it was clear that wasn't the issue. He was very antagonistic. Disapointing Experience. Maybe it was an off night but everything seemed off last night. We are regulars at this restaurant but have been away for a few months. The wait staff all seemed new and nobody seemed to know what the other was doing. I didn't recognize anyone at the restaurant at all. We were asked by each of the waiters if we wanted drinks and we ordered with each of them and it took forever to get drinks. There were specials that the waitress explained and when the dish came it didn't resemble what was explained and it looked like an appetizer so we sent it back. I ordered lamb shish kabob for $24 and it was the smallest shish kabob I have ever seen. The dish looked like an appetizer for $24. Then came time for desert and again three times we were asked if we wanted desert and three times we ordered desert but it seemed that none of the three waiters ordered the desert. We finally got it after a very long wait and the almond pudding was also different. I noticed that all the portions were small - $7.50 for grape leaves and you get 3 small grape leaves. Main meals came in appetizer size portions at a high price I didn't see the owner who is usually there but the manager who was there seemed very oblivious to any problems and was sitting in the back with friends. The service was annoying, the food just OK and not up to the normal standard, the bill was high for the amount of food that we did get. It seems the place is going down hill or possibly the restaurant has changed hands. It is definately not what it used to be. read more
