I've eaten at Skylark's for 4 years and I've always enjoyed it until recently. Aside from the super high prices (1.5X for the same food as other Fairhaven cafes), there really isn't much to complain about Skylark: the atmosphere, the decorations, the history, and the friendly wait staff are all just fine. I've really enjoyed this restaurant and have been going back almost monthly till winter 2009. HOWEVER, last week my boyfriend, me, and my friend got kicked out of the restaurant for something super petty and it totally broke my heart...I cried because I really really liked the restaurant and to think that I'd never go back due to humiliation just really made me sad. The incident was so small too it was ridiculous: we went in at about 10pm, and the door was wide open and there was chilly wind coming in, so I asked the bartender if he could close it. (He was the only staff) He said "in a moment" because there was a lot of customers and he was trying to let some air in. Fair enough, so we all sat close to each other I even had my arms inside my shirt for a little while. I ordered a cream brulee martini with him which my bf ordered a couple months ago and it was really good. But the drink that came was really bitter and sour so I went and double check, he said it was the same drink, so I asked him if there's anyway we can make it sweeter. He added some syrup but it still tasted bitter, so he said I'm welcomed to order something else if I want, I looked at the menu and thought about ordering a Hershey's kiss, but when I asked him he seemed very offended and said "You have to say PLEASE"! I was startled as I didn't even realize that I was being rude to him...I said "please~?" he nodded. I went back to my seat and my friends both thought that it was a little out of line for a service profession to demand a customer to say please. I didn't care that much though coz the new drink was really good and he smiled at me too. But after 5 minutes a group of people came in and they seem to know each other. He started to complain to them loudly about how he's so tired of customers sending back orders. My friends and I were all silent and amazed. But it wasn't for long till he went to the back. In about 15 minutes we started to smell very strong cigarette smoke, and I began to cough vigorously since I'm allergic to it. My bf went and shut the door and I thanked him. Nevertheless, the bartender guy came back and asked us if we shut the door, my boyfriend said he did and explained the reason to him...He said "I'm gonna have to ask you guys to leave as the management of the restaurant". I just couldn't believe my ears! He then went into the back again. My boyfriend was furious and went in the back too to ask him for a reason while me and my friend anxiously waited. My bf came back and said that the "manager" insisted on kicking us out due to the following reasons: -We were disrespectful to him today. -We have been disrespectful in the past and he's heard complaints from other wait persons and he just recognized us. -The gratuity we gave in the past is not enough so = disrespectful. Okay I was so shocked! And I honestly don't think that's us! First of all, how good of a memory does he have to actually recognize us coz last time we went in was June (this happened in the end of August) and before that time was Feburary. We haven't been eaten out as often this year because of the changes in our financial situation. So seriously!? Remembering us from like 6 months ago? Sounded like an excuse to me at best. Second of all, we've never ran into any kind of problems or any unpleasant situations with any wait staff. One particular waitress and I even became friends and she'd come to say hi to me even when she's not serving our table. So for him to say that we've been disrespectful to other wait persons in the past is really really strange. Third of all, I'm not a salaried person, I'm just a student who makes a little bit more than minimum wage, but I've always tipped at least ten percent. I know some people would think that it is too little for nights, and it should be 15 percent. But running on a $25max budget per meal, tipping 15 percent usually is just very difficult for me to do. But as how I understand it, isn't gratuity OPTIONAL? If I don't feel that I have the financial ability to tip extra I shouldn't have to. Not to mention getting kicked out from a restaurant for not tipping enough. I know how wait persons see tips seriously as my aunt is a waitress herself. She always tells me she feels betrayed when her customers don't tip her after she works real hard for them. I totally understand how that could make a wait person upset. But I have my hardships too, and sometimes I try to express my gratitude in other ways like saying thank you loudly with a big smile. But in this "manager's" case that apparently doesn't make up for it. Anyway this is no way to conduct a business! I'm running out of space... read more

Continuing from my last post... kicking someone out for closing the door is just unthinkable! Not to mention that I was having a allergic reaction to the smoke coming from the outside. Lots of customers open and shut doors all the time, why did we get kicked out?! I think he was probably having a bad day, but that constitutes no legit reason to treat customers like that. It was especially shocking for my Japanese friend who came from a country where they say "customer is god". She said in amazement "I didn't know restaurant personnel could just kick customers out according to their liking and their moods." What a great impression of American restaurant services to give foreigners! If any higher management executives actually care about how their customers are treated and are reading this, I really want to expose his name...But he didn't tell us his name and probably for a good reason. Tho I can provide some hints: he worked Monday night and he was the only one there. He's supposed to be a manager. The tone of his voice was somewhat feminine. If you know who this person it please confront him for what happened that night. Even now I feel degraded when I think about how we were mistreated. Maybe he's not always like this, but just so there wouldn't be more victims like us in the future when he's having a bad day, I strongly suggest RE-TRAINING him on how to be a good service professional. Because the way he was representing Skylark just made it look like a restaurant that see themselves as being superior to their inferior customers. The only reason this is even getting a star is the most amazing bartender that we had around 2 pm on March 26, 2022. Because of her, we decided to come back that evening to listen to the jazz band. We get there and they seat us, they were not that busy, however, we had to wait 15 minutes, I finally spoke to someone and she indicated she was not a server but would retrieve one for us. A server came but went to help the table that came in 15 minutes after us. I did mention to her that we did get there first, she took our order and the table behind us did get their order first, we finally were going to get up and leave and she brought our drinks in which we undrinkable!!!! She never came back and I had to go to the bar to have the bartender fix the drink, we also didn't receive the dessert that was ordered, about an hour later the hostess said they didn't have the dessert. I put my credit card out and waited an additional 20 minutes before the server picked it up. I traditionally tip anywhere fro 25-40% and unfortunately I left a $0 tip, I felt so bad about doing this, but needed them to understand the seriousness of bad service. Again, would like to come back in and have the bartender that we had earlier!! read more

The worst customer service I've ever had in my life. I was new to Fairhaven and looking for a place to have breakfast after my friends had helped me move all weekend. I took them here. We got seated by a woman who seemed frantic. The server who sat us seemed really angry that we walked in. I'm, too this day, not sure If i did something wrong or not. we didn't seat ourselves...are we supposed to? After mentioning we should really put our menus at the end of the table to signal we were ready (gosh...I'm the worst) she took our orders with distain. Me and my friends look at eachother trying to figure out what we did wrong...we are not mean people. So I decided I had enough and found her and told her to cancel our orders. We left a 3$ tip on the table for the ice waters we received...in case it was the worst day of her life or something. I will never, ever, ever, go back here. We walked up the street to Mambo Italiano and had what might've been the best customer service I've ever had. I will be writing a positive review for them. read more

My husband and the kids use to really like coming here. Something has changed and don't feel the same. The food isn't what it used to be. We came here November with family that flew in for thanksgiving of last year and some guy was smoking a cigarette talking so loud and yelling at someone over the phone. Now it's 2020 I thought I'd stop in for a bite with my daughter and to my surprise what do I see n smell, I see employees on break smoking pot, the other day I took my 9yr old daughter to get a bit to eat and clearly one of the employees was staggering out to his car like he was drunk or on something. I don't know who's running this restaurant but we will not be returning. It's seems that the waitresses attitudes have also changed and not in a good way. I feel that this once wwas a great place to come get a bite to eat and it's sad that we have to say good bye, this isn't a place I want to bring my children. In any way is this acceptable behavior, you all should be ashamed of your selves. I hope in the future this doesn't happen again. read more

I really wanted to like Skylarks but it was just OK for a Sunday lunch. The best part of the meal was the server, she was attentive and easy to chat with. The inside of the restaurant was perfectly nice and comfortable. The food... well, the "cinnamon roll" wasn't a cinnamon roll at all but rather a cake with cinnamon sprinkled on it and drowned in frosting. The frosting was good, the cake portion was ok but definitely not a cinnamon roll. My friend had the burger and it was riding the line of undercooked but he enjoyed it well enough. I had the BLT and wish I'd chosen anything else on the menu. The bread was most of the sandwich and it was really dry (beyond just being toasted) so I opted to ditch the bread and eat the other ingredients-- the bacon was good. The most outrageous part of the BLT was that it was $18 +$2 for added avocado. I have no problem paying $20 for a sandwich and fries but it's going to need to be enjoyable to eat. Skylarks Hidden Cafe is a quaint restaurant located in Downtown Fairhaven. The menu offers a variety of items ranging from seafood to salads to burgers to pastas and steaks. You are sure to find something you like. The restaurant is quiet, so it's perfect for a date or hanging out with friends. The outdoor seating area offers a great view of the historic buildings in town, and the staff is amiable and helpful. I ordered the restaurant's award-winning clam chowder and enjoyed it. The chowder is flavorful and full of large pieces of clams. Definitely give this restaurant a try if you're in the area! read more

I stayed at the lovely fairhaven village inn during a recent trip to Bellingham and decided to check this place out despite the not so great yelp reviews, and I am so glad that I did! I ordered a spicy shrimp eggs Benedict dish that was delicious and unique. I came back for dinner the next evening and was equally delighted by their spicy chicken pasta! St. Patrick's Day was amazing!! The place was packed and they had the most delicious corned beef and cabbage I have ever eaten. We arrived about 9pm but they were still serving. There was an Irish trio playing and it was totally authentic sounding Irish pub type music. The service was great and everyone was so happy. I got the last pint of Guinness. Drinks are great and the atmosphere is great in skylarks, but the food is never spactacular. Everything seems to be premade or precooked or prepackaged, and I prefer local, homemade, organic food. Other than that, it is just ok. Not too good, not too bad. I go there sometimes when I want to hang out with friends by the fireplace. read more

Mediocre food, poor service, and filthy floors. If you love banality while portraits of dead people stare at you, then this is your place.

Great ambiance in the old building. Food was good with HUGE portions! Service was quick and tidy. Pricing was on par. Will be back!
