That's when we decided it's time to try this bbq spot, well also after numerous people told us it was the best bbq spot in town. We arrived 30 mins after they opened, and the line was already out the door! The people taking orders and getting the plates ready were very quick and patient with questions. You do a little loop around and end up outside in a warm, covered patio with picnic style tables, or you can eat upstairs in the outdoor patio. Le bf ordered the smoked turkey sandwich with large mac and cheese, while I ordered the brisket combo with jalapeno and cheddar sausage, side of baked potato casserole and mac and cheese. I'll keep it short and simple. Everything was DELICIOUS! That baked potato casserole, I'll take a whole tub of that. The sausage had that crisp bite with tons of flavor, brisket melt in your mouth tender! The turkey sandwich just had the right amount of smokiness to it and super moist still. The best thing about waiting so long in line is that you get your food when ordering so it's not like you're waiting in line for an hour just for a table and then still having to wait on someone. Finally tried Slaps after several years of living in Kansas City - it's a crime I haven't been here before! I somehow managed to show up when there was zero line, which is a miracle. Whenever I have driven by before, there's been a line down to the sidewalk. The line moves pretty quick because the counter service is efficient and organized. There are huge menus on the wall, so plenty of time to decide on what to order before you get to the front of the line. There's also a bar inside as well. The brisket was so juicy and tender - it was basically falling apart. The ribs were flavorful and fell right off the bone. The burnt ends were perfect - not chewy or too charred. The sides are great! I loved the macaroni and cheese. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor picnic table seating. There is extra bbq sauce out on the patio! Hands down the best BBQ place we had while visiting Kansas City! We were a little bit concerned at first because the line was out the door and into the parking lot--but if the line is that long consistently it must be delicious! It's cut thicker than most places, more like a Texas cut and it's lovely. The ribs and sausage were also very good. Probably like an 8/10 in my book. But the star of the show was the burnt ends. My neighbor told me they were the best in KC and I agree. Best I've had anyway. VERY VERY good!! The potato casserole was unique and delicious. The baked beans were terrible. Disgustingly sweet, soupy, sticky, and nasty. I don't know why so many BBQ joints here insist on so much sugar and sweetness to the beans. Just not my style. Zarda still wins the bean game. By far. I was only in KC for one day. Reddit and Yelp seemed to agree that Slap's should be the place to try if you only have time to try one BBQ place in KC. We got ribs, burnt ends and brisket. They were all pretty damn good, but they do need sauce, especially the brisket. My husband and I ate here today and I have mixed feelings. The staff were fantastic and were pushing people through pretty quickly. We really liked the atmosphere, even the outdoor dining. The beef was very tender and was totally in line with what I was expecting from a visual and aromatic perspective. Maybe it was a bad day today but I've never had Bbq that was so sweet in my life. Assuming that apple juice must be used to keep the meat from drying out. It was a total turn off for me. I was hopeful that the bbq sauce would have some salt to balance my meal a bit, but that too was very sweet even though I had the spicy sauce. There's a table out there with sauce dispensers, takeout containers, and paper bags, all self service. Once you have navigated the waiting line, service is crisp and prompt. Got in right before the afternoon rush and it was very, very good indeed. Well smoked meats, substantial portions, and lovely outdoor seating perfect for the ensuing mess of properly enjoying the bbq. I was a little disappointed that the pickles (we sampled both the fried and regular varieties) weren't made in house. Both sauces were a bit sweeter than I usually prefer, but still very tasty, with the "hot" sauce only having a bit of heat at the very end. My 8yo really enjoyed a mix of the two and put it on everything while making "yum yum" noises, so it's very much a win. Over all, darn tasty and well worth another visit. read more

We tried four different sides; potato casserole - good, mac n cheese with bacon - good, bbq beans - very good and cheesy corn - alright. The ribs were the best. I can't remember if I liked the spicy or sweet bbq sauce more - both were good regardless but added a different flavour profile. Turkey was good, very moist - just not enough of it. The burnt ends were pretty good too as they were tender and a little bit melty from the fat. I appreciate that the meat wasn't all lean. My favorite side was the potato casserole. It was super flavorful and creamy but still had some chew from the potato cubes. The cheesy corn was pretty good too as it was pretty cheesy but could use a tad more salt. I came here on the recommendation that this is the best BBQ in Kansas City. If this is what Kansas City BBQ has to offer I will never trust a midwesterner to recommend a restaurant again. I've made far better brisket at home and I've only ever cooked brisket twice. The burnt ends were uneventful. I was looking forward to these the most but they were soggy and lacked the texture I was hoping for. The polish sausage was alright. It's sausage. It's not what you came for. Mac and Cheese was the other lowlight of the meal. It tasted like they use velveeta or something. Tasted cheap and lacked any real flavor. I actually enjoyed the baked beans and fried pickles but this is a bbq joint and you don't go out of your way for baked beans. I finally was able to dine-in at Slap's and I'm happy to report that the experience, well, slaps! See what I did there? If you dine-in expect a line. We showed up maybe 30 minutes after they opened and there was already a line down the block. I will say though, it moves fairly fast. Expect a cafeteria style set up when you walk in. There is a bar immediately to the left of the door so you can sip on a beer while waiting once you get indoors, and from there it moves really fast. Be sure to order some of the baked potato casserole (seriously to die for), and then snag a picnic table in the dining area adjacent. If it's a nice day they also have outdoor seating. If you are worried about finding a spot I'd encourage you to go early, and go on a nice day so that if you need to sit outside that isn't an issue. Overall though, I really think this might be the best 'q in the city right now so stop what you're doing and go get some award winning smoked meats! read more
