While in Cleveland, my friend took me to Slyman's as our first food stop of the trip. Parking was very easy on the street. Although it was early in the day, it was already hard to find a table and people were coming in to grab takeout. Service was efficient and friendly. The staff is clearly used to it being very busy. We had a corned beef on rye with swiss and decided to share since we had other stops to make. The sandwich was HUGE! The bread was toasted and filled with tons of meat! The meat was juicy and flavorful. We also got fries to share and honestly, we couldn't finish our food. For $15, we were both full! As a side note, I'm not a big sandwich eater and it's pretty low on my list. I wasn't excited about my friend suggesting a sandwich spot but I'm glad she did. It was on point! read more

I. love. this. place. The Ruben sandwich is out of this world and SO filling. This sandwich is packed with corned beef and is both pleasing to the eye and to the stomach. Let me tell you, this sandwich is HUGE. My appetite has significantly curbed in the past couple years so I got the "light" version which is smaller and a little bit cheaper. Even still, I was so stuffed afterwards and had to take a 2 hour nap after the meal. I also love the thousand island dressing on the table that is meant to be put on the sandwich. By the time I'm through with the sandwich, I end up using up 1/4-1/2 the entire bottle because the sauce is so good. If you live in Cleveland and you have not been to this establishment you are truly missing out on the 8th Wonder of the world. Slyman's has been around since the 14th century and has been making awesome roast beef, corned beef comma and turkey sandwich meat since as long as I can remember. The restaurant itself is not in a horrible area of town but a few blocks in either direction and you'll end up on a milk carton LOL. Seriously don't let the location keep you from going. All joking aside you really cannot go wrong with having a meal from Slyman's Lee's Sandwiches you should really consider sharing with somebody because they are that big. I picked up a catering order for my work and the employees there could not have been more helpful to me. Parking can be a little challenging around lunch time there's almost no parking behind the restaurant but there is street parking. My friend and I tried Slyman's when we were visiting Cleveland from out of town. We both ordered the classic corned beef sandwich on rye as well as a side of coleslaw. The mound of corned beef was enormous and we each had trouble finishing it. The meat was very high quality with plenty of fat and all I could think of was the resemblance to Katz's deli in NYC (and I mean that as a compliment) although the place is physically a lot smaller. Slyman's also offers pastrami and other deli staples. The ambience is very plain with an unfancy old school vibe to it. At the time we went it was noon on a weekday, so not too crowded. If you step health conscious this is not the sandwich for you. This is full of greasy, MEATY and cheesy goodness. You dont need any sides unless you want to be hauled out in a wheel barrow. I got their Reuben and it was delicious and yummy. My only complaint was too much meat. I would love to more vegetables or sauerkraut in the Reuben. It was kinda overwhelming with the meat, but their meat was fresh and did not have any weird smell that cold meats tend to have. Slyman's is truly a Cleveland classic. This place has been here for years and continues to set the standard for Cleveland deli's. The corned beef is cooked to perfection and thinly shaved in dramatic portions onto Swiss cheese on Rye bread and then grilled. The result--simply the best sandwich in Cleveland. Complemented with thousand island dressing or mustard to your preference. Have been here 5+ times now and they continue to be consistently excellent. Most recently went during Covid precautions and can honestly say that they haven't missed a beat. Food was still exceptional. Obviously, the dining room is closed and takeout only. However, everyone is wearing a mask and gloves. They take social distancing and sanitation very seriously which is a real breath of fresh air. Recommend 5 stars without hesitation. This was the only planned stop for our recent long weekend in Cleveland. Even better than expected! We arrived just after noon on a Thursday, and the place was busy. We scored a spacious 4 top (after our waitress moved us from a 2 top jammed between other 2 tops...I didn't even need to give her a pained look). We asked for a sandwich with both corned beef and pastrami on it (this is not on the menu), plus a side of coleslaw and an extra pickle. Once the sandwich arrived - HUGE!! - Ken and I split the meat and bread to have a half of cb for me and a half of pastrami for Ken. I didn't order either lean, which is my usual for cb, but they were nicely lean while also remaining juicy and flavorful. Mustard and horseradish are at the table. Everything was amazing! Ken compared this to Carnegie in NY and thought Slyman's was possibly the best deli sandwich he's ever had. Wow! They charge for extra pickle, but you will get an entire new-ish pickle. A bit too much pickle if your dining companion doesn't eat his. Bathroom was clean. Parking: we parked on the road a couple blocks past the restaurant. No issues. If you plan to use a credit card know that you cannot add a tip. Bring cash to tip these hardworking folks. read more

This restaurant is located on the outskirts of downtown. When you walk in you see the sign that reads " the world famous famous corned beef sandwich" and "Cleveland's largest corn beef. And well that is not a lie. My sandwich was huge but very tasty at the same time. I ordered the corned beef with swiss and mmmmmmmmmmm. It was the best I have ever had. Well worth the $16. I did my best to finish my food, but it was just too much so I tapped out and had some delicious food for later. The service was very fast. It took less than 5 minutes to get my orders. The staff there was also very friendly from our server to the guy that was busing the tables. I got there 20 minutes before they were closing and got the same service and cheer as if I had came there in the middle of the day. I am finding that to be increasingly uncommon at restaurants. Please keep in mind that they do not have fountain drinks though. So if you order a drink you will get a cup of ice and the bottle/can drink of your choice. There is ample parking on the street by the restaurant so if you are staying downtown and have a car, I highly suggest driving. If you are in Cleveland, this place is a must go. Prior to eating here, I had never been to what I would call a New York Deli. Of course this deli is located in Cleveland. The restaurant is located in a run down area on the edge of downtown Cleveland. As we drove there we passed numerous street people literaly sleeping on the the sidewalks. Most of the adjacent buildings were either abandoned or in disrepair. In the middle of this despair sits a real gem.....Slyman's! The sandwiches are piled high with meat, so high I don't know how one person eats a whole sandwich. My wife and I split a Reuben. She also ordered a side of Cole Slaw. I ordered a cup of brisket chili. The Reuben was awesome. The corned beef was the most tender and tasty I've ever eaten. You didn't even need to chew the meat, it melted in your mouth. The rye bread was very good. I personally would have liked a little more kraut, but that's a minor complaint considering the quality of the sandwich overall. I thought the chili was above average for restaurant chili. My wife's Cole Slaw was very creamy (my favorite style). The portion was huge also. Our friends split a half corned beef/half pastrami sandwich. They also ordered a bowl of the brisket chili and the potato pancakes served with applesauce and sour creme. They liked all of their meal, but after we all sampled bites of the pastrami, we all agreed the pastrami was good, but the corned beef was outstanding and definitely the thing to order. Slyman's does not serve any alcohol, only soft drinks and tea. Slyman's is only open for breakfast and lunch. I had to eat quite a bit of the tender corned beef before I could attempt to take a bite. Thousand island dressing came in a squeeze bottle on the table, so we added it to the sandwich The corned beef was sliced thin, piled high, lean and tender. The rye bread was small & nicely grilled. Not much sauerkraut on this Reuben, but that's OK...the corned beef is the star! The fries were large crinkle-cut, and came out nice & hot. We enjoyed our lunch and brought home leftovers. I ordered two regular corn beef sandwiches and rye with Swiss cheese and I specified extra lean because I can't stand biting into fat. This place is incredibly overrated, typical corn beef sandwiches that lack flavor but it's stacked really high. It's a simple case of quantity over quality that wins most people over. After sawing a chunk off the side (yes, it's that tall) the first words out of my mouth were oh my God. I truly have never had a corned beef sandwich so good. The meat is very thin, very flavorful and the fattiness of the beef just makes it that much more enjoyable. The rye and swiss was also a good choice. I wouldn't recommend buying chips or fries, I didn't touch the pickle that came with it and I definitely couldn't finish. The sandwich was a whopping $16! Which is kind of crazy. And not something I would be able for afford regularly. But definitely worth a stop now and again! Parking is hard, especially around lunch time. There was a line out the door when I came but if you plan to eat in, make sure that is the line waiting for pickup orders.
