From the outside, this place looks great! Geometric architectural accents, lots of close parking and lots of street facing windows make this place look very modern and chic- things you need to stand out and attract hungry diners like me on a restaurant-laden strip like Queen Street. At 4:00 pm, the place was nearly empty, which is definitely expected in the restaurant industry. While I wasn't planning to dine inside anyway, the dining room didn't particularly feel like a welcoming place to eat. While the windows should bring in plenty of light, sure, it was pretty dim out that day in late February at 4 pm. And the entire dining room and order area relied primarily on this gray natural lighting during the entire visit. It felt like it was closed because of the lack of lighting. I would definitely keep an eye on how well lit the customer area is at any given time and keep it lit accordingly. The tables were also still unwashed, despite the lack of diners. It looked like a shift was changing while we were there- but I'm not sure if I'd want to leave my coworkers with a messy dining room for the night. That's not good teamwork. Alright- enough ranting about the dining room. Let's talk about the burgers. Smashburger's menu is predictable. I would assume the burger lovin' customer base really likes that too. You go to Smashburger for burgers. Nuff said. They've got beef and chicken and blackbean. They've got 1 patty or two. Then comes the bacon, cheese, and toppings. There were a few different specials with preset toppings, but you can build your own. They use a few different types of gourmet buns... think Wendy's premium sandwich bun. In addition to customizable burgers, they have salads and sides like tots, fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings. You can "smash" ify them which means adding a blend of rosemary, salt and spices. I had no desire to smash my fries, so I can't speak on that. As for taste, everything was pretty average to tasty. The meat has a fresh taste that definitely rivals Jake's Wayback Burger and Five Guys. The fries are fair. I'm sure they would have been better if I ate them immediately, in restaurant. They held poorly on the 10-15 minute ride home. My son liked how cheesy his burger was. Overall, everything was good. I could envision it tasting even better were it eaten immediately. That's on me for taking it to go. I want to come back and try eating in the dining room. Hopefully it will look a little more appealing and I won't be able to resist. My brother and I went tonight around 8:30. We heard so many good things about smash burger and wanted to try. The employee who was working the register was welcoming and very nice. The food was amazing. Although while we were getting our drinks another employee was staring at my brother dead in the eyes. We were a little weirded out but we brushed it off. When are food came and we starting eating the same employee was standing by the kitchen door literally staring at me through the little window while i was eating my food for a good solid 3 minutes. I'm not going to lie it creeped us out. She went i guess to the bathroom came back and went to refill her drink. She slowly walked back to the kitchen still staring at us. At that point we were completely uncomfortable. We were the only customers there so she wasn't just looking around or at someone else. Portions are tiny for the price. Tonight was our 2nd time going, the first was when they first opened, and I feel like the portions got much smaller, and the price did not. The flavor is good though. I've been to Smashburger approximately 4 times now. At first I hated the atmosphere. The staff aren't too helpful or knowledgeable as one would except. When you introduce a new concept of ordering, please don't alienate the customers. The first time I went in I was lost and not to be hyper- sensitive but I think my cashier was annoyed with me. Yes, there are written instructions on the way in and it states to grab a menu. You can grab a menu but if I can't see prices I'll have to ask once I'm up to order! I got the impression that the person taking my order had others on her mind. Everyone is entitled to have a bad day but when it interferes with your job, that's probably a good opportunity to request a break. My first visit didn't leave a great impression because I felt some of the staff "expected" me to know exactly how Smashburger operates. Rule #1 never make assumptions. The art to introducing new concepts begins with educating others on how your concept is fun and exciting. I just felt rushed. My next complaint is that the menu DOESN'T include prices!!! We live in a society that promotes equal rights and access to all but yet Smashburger expects everyone to have perfect vision so they can see the tiny price posted ahead. I wish the prices were posted on the menu so I can make my informed decision prior to arriving to the front-end to place my order. I wouldn't be so upset but it seems at least half of the times I have been in the person taking my order gets upset because I ask about the product or price. I guess the staff wasn't trained to learn about the products they're selling. I've been to places that didn't post prices but the staff were eager to answer my questions. Regardless, I'll get straight to the point and talk about the food. The burgers aren't anything special. A small/ regular burger starts at approximately $4.50ish. You can get their "specialty" burgers for approximately $6. There are toppings to pick from but nothing really out of the ordinary. My biggest draw is probably the fries. Their fries are cut much much smaller and therefore stay crunchy longer. We honestly go for the shoestring fries. A small is $2 and a large is $3.70ish I believe. I've been taking my son simply for he fries and luckily for us we have memorized our order so service has improved but I still wonder if our experience will change if we decided to order something "new". Count me as a fan of Smashburger; it's a welcomed addition to the fast-casual burger spots in the area. Similar in style to Jake's Wayback or Five Guys, Smashburger allows you to either make your own creation, or choose from a decent-sized menu of burgers which could be made from beef, chicken, or black bean patties. A cool addition to Smashburgers are their local creations, which vary from area to area. Connecticut's burger is called the Husky, made with applewood smoked bacon, American cheese, lettuce,red onion, CT Hot Pepper Relish #5, and mayo on an egg bun. I opt to go without the mayo, and it's a really tasty burger. The local hot pepper relish is the right mix of spicy and sweet to go along with the saltiness of the bacon. One downside to Smashburger is their sides. I'm not the biggest fan of their tiny, thin fries, and their Smashfries (with olive oil, rosemary, and garlic) makes them only marginally better. Their haystack onions aren't great as they are so thin that you only taste the crunchy coating and none of the actual onion. They are also so thin that dipping them is a messy task. Next time I go, I'll probably try their spicy buffalo fries and see if I have any luck there. I've yet to try their shakes, but I definitely want to soon since they use hard (aka not soft-serve) Häagen-Dazs ice cream. And if you're in the mood, they also have a selection of bottled beers and wines. Every time I've gone it's been relatively crowded inside, and the wait time can be a little on the long side. The price of their food if you go with a full meal of a burger, side, and drink can run around $12, so feeding a family of four can easily run into the $50 range. read more

I had my first smash burger experience out in Colorado a few years back.. I've been excited to hear my home town is in the process of opening a location in September but I had no idea that the Southington location opened a few months back! So here I am, I came up here soon as I heard about it. I'm surprised to see all the haters writing bad reviews here so far. Of course a new location has to work out staffing and training and other kinks so give them a break. I got the classic smash burger and fries. They were just as amazing as I remember. The fries are cut thin and crispy, tossed in an herbed oil, love them. The burger itself beats out any fast food restaurant chain around hands down, including five guys. They server beer and wine... That's a plus. Staff was very friendly and explained the menu and process well. I asked about a few of the sauces and they were patient in explaining them and even let me try them. To the reviewer who wrote about them forgetting the cheese... You clearly were not paying attention. You have to add cheese its an add on for 0.70 extra. Just reading some of the reviews here are petty and impatient cheapskates. It's why I really don't like looking to yelp for reviews but I hope this one shed some light. I got a grilled chicken sandwich and the chicken was pounded to about an eighth of an inch thick. It could have been deli meat! Otherwise, the flavor was lacking and the toppings fell short. My partner had the bbq burger and was also not impressed at all. He did like the smash fries. They are cut very thin so they get extra crispy. Just experienced Smashburger for the first time. Line was long due to the fact that the location just opened last week but the staff moved it along pretty quickly. Nicholas rang the transaction, he was full of energy and was obviously happy to be there and to take our order. Because it was my first time eating at a Smashburger I figured I'd order the Classic Smash. I also ordered a side of Buffalo Fries. The food was prepared very fast and delivered to our table. The burger was nothing exceptional and the "classic smash sauce" just tasted like mustard to me and honestly I prefer 5 Guys and Goldburger to the taste of Smashburger but the Buffalo Fries were really tasty. Much better than Catsup and Mustards buffalo fries. They are served with a ranch dipping sauce and the regular size basket is more than enough for two people. The service was excellent and I would definitely come back to try more of the menu. Smashburger has such a good reputation overall and it feels as if this location's panned a bit. Even so I decided to give it a try. We went on a Saturday afternoon. We were the only ones there. Not a good sign. The young lady took our order... 27 dollars total for 2 burger combo meals. Bit pricey. But we got the large size. ... Or DID we? Honestly if ours were the large size it didn't feel like it. They were about the size of what you'd get with a BK whopper. The bun was delicious, the burger was cooked well. But when you're paying near restaurant prices you expect the quality and portion to match. This didn't. I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile... glad I did. The inside reminds me of a Chipotle (floor and set up of tables). Ordering was easy, price was average ($10ish for 1/3 lb burger, fries and drink). Order came out about 8-10 mins later. Burger was pretty good, even though it wasn't warm (which boggles my mind since they had just cooked it?) The fries? No on a couple of different levels. Very thin cut (thinner than Mcfastfoodchain) and they were COLD. Like not even "we reheated these after sitting for hours"... straight up cold. And I stopped in around 4:45/5:00 pm so it wasn't at some random midday hour. The soda fountain had good selection of diet/sugar free/ regular soda and juices. My wife tried it and liked it. Her crispy chicken came out burned and dry. We told staff and she ordered a turkey classic instead. It came with water dripping off the lettuce, a soggy bun and it was too salty for her to eat. Meanwhile, all the staff is hanging around one table laughing, joking and eating while one girl is cleaning tables. Don't waste you time or money here. As we grabbed the menus, we saw opportunities arise to decide what delicious meals we would eat, we ordered with no hesitation. Sitting here after enjoying an avocado club burger and the smash fries. The food is very good. The rest of my party had vanilla and strawberry milk shakes - excellent! A black bean burger and the Husky, no complaints only good things to say about the food. The music is TOO LOUD!!! Hard to carry on a conversation. A woman came in carrying her dog and no one told her it was inappropriate to bring your pet into a restaurant. We are not talking a service dog - this woman was carrying around the food tables in her arms. I am an animal lover but this was so wrong. Talked to the manager. My hubby and I checked out this sweet little establishment last night and much to our surprise it was superb. To begin with the customer service was out of this world. Not only was the place spotless but the friendliness of the staff was worth the visit in itself. The menu was more than I had expected - much more than just burgers. They have chicken, fish, and a variety of salads, side dishes and shakes as well. As if all this was not enough to make us want to return, the prices were remarkably reasonable and the portions every bit satisfying. When our to-go order was finally ready they forgot the fries! When I went back to tell the server that we didn't have the fries I was ignored waited 5 minutes and then had to ask another staff member. They were totally unorganized and mismanaged. I've been here a couple of times now, once to eat-in and once for takeout. Both times the service was pretty quick and the burgers were great! I've now been to this Smashburger location twice. Both times I've made my own burger, and the first time My girlfriend got the avocado club burger and this time she got the harvest salad with grilled chicken, and both orders were take out. The good points are the food is fresh, unlike other fast food burger places who claim fresh food, this really feels like it achieves the type of freshness you would get by cutting up the toppings and making the burger yourself. I'll start with the ingredients. For the burger rolls we've had the Egg bun, Multi grain and Chipotle bun. All were very good and a step above most fast food rolls. Toppings wise we've had lettuce, tomato, pickles, fresh jalapenos, avocado, pepper jack and bleu cheeses and the applewood bacon. All of the veggies are fresh and taste like they've been fresh cut. The bacon, unlike other burger places who claim fresh applewood bacon, this does not feel like precooked bacon, it still has the little fatty ends on the bacon that you would get if you just fried it yourself. The burger patties are fresh pressed on a griddle and have that nice griddle burger crunch. As for the salad it was full of fresh greens, tomato, raisins, dry cranberry, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and bleu cheese with a balsamic dressing. The salad was fresh and tasted good but a bit small. The grilled chicken was fresh cooked and juicy but there was not very much to go around. Overall a good salad but a bit small for the price. As for sides we've had the smash fries, buffalo fries and fried pickles. The fried pickles were a bit greasy and left me wanting not bad but not great either. The buffalo fries are seasoned with a franks redhot powder which is salty on top of already salted fries making them way too salty. The smashfries on the other hand which like all of their fries are super thin but seasoned with garlic, rosemary and olive oil. They are an elevated fast food fry, super tasty and addicting I love them. The drawbacks are it's always busy so be prepared to wait for your order, but waiting for food made fresh does not bother me much. The biggest drawback is the price. If it were not for the two coupons I had that gave me $2 off each entree I would have paid just over $20 for a burger a salad and a large fry. For this reason I would go to a Wendy's for a quick lunch before Smashburger, even though the quality of Smashburger is better. In the end the food is worth 4 stars but it gets 3 stars because it just costs too much for the regular visit, I'll go there less often due to the price. read more
