I visit metro Atlanta 3-4 times a year on business (or, I should say that I used to until early-2020). I've eaten at Smokejack several times over the past few years. I was in Alpharetta again for the first time in almost two years. I am really impressed with this place. The food is top-notch and the service is superb, also. I ordered the brisket plate and it was killer. Moint and tender (I like mine lean) and they give you a half-pound. For sides, I had mac & cheese and collards. The mac was wonderful; not old and dry as it often is in restaurants. The collards were yummy with their vinegar. The iced tea was delicious, too. I can't say enough nice things about the service. Let me tell you! There is a real Chef working in the kitchen which is very rare nowadays. I had the Pulled Pork sandwich with collard greens and freshly made real pickles. Great meal I recommend anyone within a 100 mile radius to drive here and get you some. Came here with my brother, he ordered the smoked sausage while I ordered the Brisket. I'm not so sure if the value was so good on my end though; I had five slabs of brisket and two sides. I'm not exactly a Mac and Cheese guy or Collards, but these were done right; the former was creamy and had a sharp cheese taste to it while the latter was seasoned properly. However, the portion size for the brisket was somewhat paltry. I mean $17 and without Corn Bread to start... I'll give them a break since the COVID forces a lot of restaurants to make concessions. A note to bbq enthusiasts, the brisket and burnt ends have a wet sauce. Carolina style to be exact, so those who like dry rubs probably shouldn't t get their hopes up. Just happened to be in the area and wanted some bbq. Very good reviews here so we stopped to check it out. We got the combo with turkey, chicken and beef brisket. Let me just tell Arby's they are sadly mistaken because Smokejack definitely HAS THE MEATS. Oh my goodness all three meats were so tender and juicy. The original bbq sauce was also amazing. However, the sides were lacking in my opinion. We ordered the fried green tomatoes which had a great crust and the mayo was also good. They were simply too thick. I prefer my tomatoes sliced a bit thinner so there is the right ration of breading and tomato. The mac and cheese was dry and seemed like it was out of the Kraft box. My husband stated the mashed potatoes were good but would have preferred gravy which would have set it off for real. I give Smokejack 4 stars just because the meats were just that good. We've ordered through Uber Eats several times because we live so far away. Tonight was the first time we dropped by. Cute area, restaurant was clean, staff was very friendly. Now to the good part. Burnt ends are delish, the potato salad is out of this world. Be warned, it may give you the urge to lick your plate. Fried pickles are really tasty and the sauce pairs really well with the flavor. I didn't taste any smokiness and I couldn't really tell much seasoning in the meat either. Very disappointed by that. The sides were so so; no wow factor at all. Corn pudding was more of a souffle than what I have known corn pudding to be. I ordered the collard greens w/ ham not knowing they would be kind and of spicy hot but that was not part of the description on the menu so they were kind enough to replace that side with another. My daughter ordered a kids meal which had a hot dog and Mac n cheese.The hot dog was huge and they served generous portions for the kids meal.My husband said he liked that the food had a nice smokey flavor to it. The atmosphere is nice and is in a happening part of town.Most BBQ restaurants are casual attire and although this one is too I would say it is a bit more upscale for a BBQ restaurant.Parking out front (or anywhere on that street) is impossible so don't take this route. I love the atmosphere and the servers have always been wonderful to us. I like the pork and I like the smoked chicken. But my hands down favorite is actually an appetizer, it's the boneless chicken thighs on coleslaw with a blue cheese drizzle and it's just amazing. My husband and I actually split it, the portion is huge with 2 thighs. And a huge bonus for me is the gluten free friend pickles!! Food was marginal but when I asked if we got bread the manager(I assume) he was so short and rude Like I was supposed to know it was an extra charge! Server was new so I will give him that. The rib was warm down through the bone, and it held firm until you bite into it - and the pork meat comes right off the way it's supposed to. I went to a party in the catering room upstairs recently. The food was delicious, as usual. The space is awesome, roomy, and has a full bar. The gentleman who was handling the food and the bar, Neil, is a gem to be handling the catering. Very sweet, friendly and spot on with his service! Great guy and you should give him a raise! We went there for lunch couple days ago. Good restaurant layout and comfortable seating. They have higher and lower table options and as well as booths. I ordered brisket plate with two sides which were corn pudding and Brunswick stew. The brisket was lean. It wasn't as juicy and favorable as I prefer. The corn pudding was soft and smooth. It had good texture and corn favorite. The Brunswick stew was little bit salty and not much of tomato favorite in it which was disappointed. I had much better Brunswick stew somewhere before. I had banana pudding for dessert and it was creamy and tasty. Overall, I would give 3.5 stars because of the restaurant seating, decor, atmosphere and service. The food was between above average and average because it wasn't the best brisket I had. It is not even on my top five best BBQ in Atlanta list. It is pricey for what you got. Checked out this place last night and it was pretty good for what I expected. We both were craving something light so ordered the smoked chicken cobb salad. It was exactly what I was hoping for so I was pleased with my menu choice. The restaurant is nicely laid out and you leave smelling like smoked meat. We spent a couple hours there catching up and enjoying our banana pudding dessert. The overall experience was great. Our server, Margie was fantastic. She did everything a server should do and we were very happy with the attention she gave us. I also ordered a cup of their Brunswick stew. It was not as flavorful as I expected but super meaty and thick. I might just be picky when it comes to my Brunswick stew since I'm a huge fan of the tomato based one from Williamson Bros. BBQ but if you dig thick, hearty stew, you'll like their version. I hope to explore more of their smoked meats the next time we visit and give them another try sometime in the near future. I don't think I can base my overall experience just on having a salad at a BBQ joint but giving the extra star for the stellar service we had from our server last night and look forward to revisiting them for dinner soon enough. read more

Smokejack is located on Highway 9, in a block of buildings that I consider Downtown Alpharetta. There is a nice patio with the wood stacked outside, and you can even see the smoking trailer in the spots directly out back. Inside has a good-sized dining room with booths and tables and a spacious bar. I was meeting my husband, who was already seated on the platform area. The decor is wood and liquor (all kinds of bourbon on the shelves), appropriate for a barbecue joint without being kitschy. For lunch, we started with the Mojo smoked wings (6 for $6.95). The skin was a little crispy, the meat was still quite juicy, and the smoke was subtle under the spicy sauce. The wings are good sized, with plenty of meat. For my main, I got the vegetable platter (choice of 4 sides for $9.75) with mashed sweet potatoes, collard greens, pimento cheese grits, and tomatoes & cukes. My favorites were the mashed sweet potatoes and the collards. The mashed sweet potatoes were fluffy and not too buttery. The collards were tender. The pimento cheese grits could've used more grits as it was almost more like soup, though I did like the flavor of the pimento cheese. I would not recommend. The tomatoes & cukes were just fine, though I think the tang of the vinaigrette on them didn't mix well with the collards on my palette. Jimmy got the burnt ends with collards and pimento cheese grits ($14.95). I did get one of Jimmy's burnt ends, and it was tender, smoky, and covered in sauce keeping it moist. All in all, a good experience - fast and friendly service with good flavors and appropriate portions for the cost. read more

I ate at Smokejack's many years ago when it first opened up in Alpharetta. I remember going with a group of friends at the time and enjoying the food and the ambiance and I specifically remember a great plate of beef tips and gravy over mashed potatoes. Unfortunately I also remember it was somewhat expensive (at the time I was starting a new business and didn't have money to spend on expensive dinners out). Fast forward nearly 10 years: My date and I were wanting to try someplace new for dinner and I suggested Smokejack. First of all I'll point out that this is a restaurant in downtown Alpharetta, which, right now is seriously under construction. There is limited parking and if you aren't lucky enough to get a space right up front, you'll need to park on a side street and walk back up. It's not a big deal unless it's raining (as it was last night). Walking in, the first thing I noticed was that the atmosphere was extremely casual, family oriented, almost cafeteria feeling (despite having a full bar over to the left). The staff all seem extremely young (high school / college age) and seemed either timid or giggly and not quite sure the best way to do their jobs. Not bad or impolite, just tentative. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks - beer for my date, wine for me. Now, far be it from me to complain about being served a large glass of wine, but I've never been to a restaurant before where they filled a standard sized wine glass to within 1/2" of the brim. The usual wine pour is 6 oz and this must have been easily 10 oz. (Again, I think this was due to young, inexperienced staff.) We also had to ask for glasses of water to be brought. I don't expect them to be brought automatically, but it would be nice to be asked. We asked for a few minutes to read the menu before ordering, but then our server seemed unsure of when to return. After watching her walk past our table several times, we finally had to flag her down to tell her we were ready. We ordered salads and main courses. The salads came out promptly (his mixed greens and mine a wedge) and were good. However, within 3 mins of our salads coming out, there was our server with our main dishes. (The staff needs to be taught to stage meals so that food comes out nicely spaced.) He ordered the "Mojo" platter with ribs, brisket, and burnt ends, and I ordered the burnt ends with mashed potatoes and collards. The food was served "cafeteria style" - a platter of meat with individual bowls of ice cream scoops of potato and greens. Not what I was expecting based on what I remembered. The burnt ends were good, but they were more like chunks of regular meat in sauce - I didn't get a lot of that crispy burnt end flavor. The potatoes were bland and if it weren't for the lumps I'd have thought they were from a box mix. The collards were the best thing on the plate - cooked tender and tasting of bacon and red pepper. After we finished our dinner and were leaving the restaurant, we noticed an entire board of "specials" hanging on the wall behind our table, which is too bad because we'd probably have ordered those over ordering off the menu, but our server never pointed them out or said anything about them. Overall review: The food is average, the ambiance is cafeteria, and the service needs a lot of work (And again I want to stress that no one was rude or bad, just untrained and unsure of what to do, which is a management issue, not a staff issue). Smokejack BBQ is located in Alpharetta/Roswell in a small strip with limited slanted street parking. I came here spontaneously with a bunch of coworkers for lunch when we were all craving BBQ. Their prices are really affordable for BBQ ~$10 for a sandwich + side, or ~$13 for a meat entree + 2 sides. Since I'm watching my white carb intake, I opted for the pulled pork shoulder with a side of collard greens and coleslaw. It was kind of embarassing because the waiter brought my plate towards the guys thinking that they ordered the bigger meal, but it was actually mine whereas the guys just ordered the sandwich plus a side. Overall, the food was very average and nothing particularly outstanding. The collard greens were my favorite. I also like that they have a bunch of different types of BBQ sauces to go with your food, though you do have to request it. My personal favorite is the Kansas City sauce that has "an Asian flare" and the Alabama white sauce seemed sketchy at first, but I actually was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it, especially with fries.
