I agree with Lisa C.. I was also an Obento-ya fan, where the food was nuanced and authentic. But the sobering news on Soberfish is this is Asian food for American malls. Cookie-cutter and profit-margin food that is unbalanced, bland, and poorly presented. Their beer prices are higher than pubs in downtown MPLS! If you want better sushi, drive a mile further to Midori's Floating World. Having said that, it's near two universities and if you're on a fixed budget I'd recommend their lunch specials. They're adequate and fair. Best parking is on 27th ... not Franklin ... and if you leave as disappointed as I did, take heart, one of the better liquor shops in MPLS is across the street. read more

Decent place for decent sushi. Not a place I'd recommend or must go back to, but I will go back when I'm really craving a quick affordable sushi fix that is nearby. We did come during happy hour so we ordered 4 different rolls. We ordered the dynamite, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and spicy yellow tail all extra spicy. I liked 2 of the rolls and didn't like 2 of the other rolls because the fish were grounded up to a paste which I hate. I almost want to say it was the spicy tuna and spicy salmon but I wouldn't quote myself on that. A friend ordered the salmon skin which, surprisingly, was extra crispy and good. The service was good. Our server was nice and attentive. Food came out quick and our glass was always full. Parking seems like it was all street parking which kind of sucks but not too big of a deal. read more

I'm a big fan of Sober Fish! There is a very small lot in the back for parking that normally has room. The restaurant has lots of seating options, both booths, and tables! Often times it's cold so bring a sweater! The appetizers are not very good, I would eat them if ordered but would prefer to save money. However, their drinks are A +. I would recommend the Thai Iced Tea! Main meals are wonderful. All of the Pad Thais and Currys I've had have been stellar. Took my girl and one of our friends out to dinner at soberfish because of a few recommendations. It did not disappoint, the food was great, the wait staff was very attentive and friendly. We ordered some appetizers, sushi, and the pineapple fried rice the food arrived promptly and tasted wonderful. Since we were having such a great time we decided to stay for dessert and ordered the green tea tempura ice cream. I've never had anything like it, it has since become my favorite dessert dish, it tastes so sweet, and refreshing. I have been here a couple times and there food is still not the greatest. One day, we came here during happy hour and ordered sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls and pad thai. Their sweet and sour chicken tasted way too sweet and pad thai is a little bland. Another day my friend ordered sushi and it was horrible. It was not fresh but mushy. I saw that Sober Fish was not only a new sushi place, but they also had a 30% off food promo, and Happy Hour cocktail specials. It's the only time that cheap sushi sounds like a good idea. But service was soooo sloooow. It was borderline agonizing if I didn't enjoy the company of my friends so much. I must have looked like I had a nervous twitch because I kept looking over my shoulder to see if the waiter was coming over yet. My two friends and I sat down around 5:30pm at a table outside. It was at least 10mins until I got water and was able to order my drink. It wasn't very busy in there, by the way. We were not ready to order the first time the waitress asked, but it took so long for her to come back around that we didn't place our entree orders until 6:15. Long story short, we ordered drinks, sushi rolls, and dessert, and didn't get out of there until 8pm. We were fortunately in no rush, but by the time the check finally came we were ready to book it the hell out of there. The HH is decent - $3 for a generously poured rail drink. Limited HH food specials too. For sushi we ordered: Mothra (Avocado, tuna, salmon, bonito flakes and eel sauce on outside. Soft shell crab, cucumber, asparagus, spicy mayo and kaiware on inside), Siam's Kiss (Rice Curry, Tuna, Cali mix, asparagus, carrot, Masago inside. Wrapped with Salmon, avocado, curry mayo and flakes), Spring Blossom (Shrimp Tempura, avocado, cucumber and carrots. Spicy Salmon on the outside. Wrapped with soy paper), and a cali roll. I don't like cali rolls to begin with, but the table was not a fan of it either. We basically fought over who was stuck forcing down the last few pieces. The Mothra was my favorite, but it seemed skimpy on the tuna and salmon, which were overpowered by the eel. We assumed that Siam's Kiss had curried rice, but I could hardly taste it. Spring Blossom was just good, but I'm not crazy about soy wrapper vs toasted nori. I think it offers no taste or texture. It's for the birds. Side note: Sitting outside, we were approached by a lot of foot traffic when we were eating our rolls. A lot of "characters" (ok, total bums) kept coming up to our table and oggling and commenting on our food. I was half like "I don't blame them" and half like "please take a shower". So slow service + good but not great sushi = I'll stop in here again for a HH and/or for a social outing, but otherwise will save my time and money. read more

SCAM ALERT. Ordered take out there and the next day I noticed that my $75 bill was charged $90. When I called to complain they apologized and said that this was "miss rung" and that they would be refunding my $15. They never did and I will never order food from them ever again. I suspect the surly, hulking bartender who I had to pick up my order from- not the cashier up front which I thought was bizarre- added a $15 tip onto my order without my permission. As a rule, I tip generously and usually toss in a few bucks for takeout but for some reason I felt like he was rushing me so I signed the receipt and he whisked it away. The tip line was blank. So is 15 dollars really worth it, you scum bags? And then you lie to me telling me you'll refund the 15 dollars -YOU STOLE FROM ME?? Never been so disrespected, and I've never writer a bad review before. It's too bad because we really enjoyed the food -75 bucks for take out duh! Was ready to be a regular customer. It's not easy for me to find restaurants to eat at, and it's even harder to order delivery. I often end up eating late (10:30pm), and I have multiple allergies (gluten, dairy, all fish and fish products, etc) and am trying to be as low FODMAP as possible (feel free to Google), and am on a pretty harsh budget. So, tonight, with not a speck of food in the apartment, I'd put together a first-time order from Sober Fish that fell within the overlap of those restrictions, with the added note to the cooks, "No fish sauce," to be delivered via the BiteSquad. The Bite Squad guy called a few minutes after I'd placed the order to tell me that one of the curry dishes I'd ordered CANNOT be made without fish sauce. Okay, I said, and changed to a different curry dish. 10 minutes after that, my phone rang again. It's another Bite Squad driver, telling me that Sober Fish says ALL their curry dishes have fish sauce, and many of their other dishes as well, and they CANNOT make these without fish sauce. Cannot, will not, no way, no how. Never mind that I've gotten curry all over the place without fish sauce. Never mind that I've never been told by any Asian restaurant that they can't leave it out of a dish -- that the success of the dish depends entirely and unequivocally on those precious drops of fish sauce. So. No delivery for me. No food in the apartment. I'm irritated and frustrated at Sober Fish for being ridiculous and inflexible. They've lost my business permanently. (And yes, I know this is a first-world, entitled white person problem. Fully acknowledging that. But this IS a site for reviews, so.) read more

Great to have this on Franklin! We stopped about two weeks after they opened and tried lots of dishes to see what was good and we thought a lot of the food we had was just great, especially compared to the waning days of True Thai. The food is good. We live closely, so it's easy for us. The green curry is actually to die for. The pad thai is also really good. But what makes me not want to go back is the shortness/rudeness of the staff who picks up the phone and take take-out orders. I'm done with it. We have some food sensitivities in our family (two of us) that are easy to deal with (they've always been handled with grace and friendliness when we eat in) and I also have a simple request about packaging the food that always gets me in trouble here. It's NOT that big of a deal. They always seem to be rushed and irritated. The last three times I've called for take-out, it's been a *click* at the end of a conversation instead of "thank you" or "that will be ready in 20 min." or whatever. I'm done. read more

I absolutely love this place! I am vegan and always get the curry dish with peanut sauce and spinach. The service is friendly and effecting and it is a very relaxed atmosphere. Soberfish, where to begin? I was really, I mean really, impressed with their reasonable happy hour, considering they're located in Seward. The sushi on special during happy hour is so worth the price and always made on point. The pad Thai really hits the spot and has a good balance of savory and spicy and has a pretty large helping for the happy hour price. We live around the corner, so sober fish felt like a natural to satisfy my hankering for some egg rolls and sushi. I loved the egg rolls - they were perfectly crispy and delicious, exactly what I expected. And maybe this is my own fault for getting sushi to go, but my tummy felt a little off afterwards. The service I've had at sober fish is always less than desired, but for the most part, my food is brought at a timely manner and correct, so...I can't really complain. read more

We have been anxious to check out the restaurant that replaced our favorite Thai place, True Thai. Sober fish offers so many of our favorite foods-sushi & Thai food, so we were hoping that this would be our new place & we were excited about the potential. The ambiance is fun & modern, though a little crowded & loud. We ordered spring rolls, a specialty roll & a red curry. All of the food was fine, but nothing particularly memorable. We were especially disappointed with how bland the curry was. The waitstaff is friendly, but the service is very slow. It's a new restaurant, so I'm sure they are working out the kinks. But with how many amazing restaurants there are in Mpls, we probably won't be going back. read more

Sober Fish is a great addition to the neighborhood. We've become regulars at the late-night happy hour (9pm-Close, nightly). Happy Hour is a great deal, but the dishes are good enough for full price dining as well. We've had two of the fried rice option, and the Pineapple one was especially appealing. Sober fish is a new place with some problems to work out. Drinks are mostly filled with ice, and aren't refilled unless requested. At one point they didn't have some items on the menu (green tea or coconut ice cream), and they mixed up bills, charging my friend and I for the wrong checks (which had about a 10$ difference in price) but maybe that was an early growing pain? The house salad had semi off-putting chunks of ice on it, and the Laab salad (made with tofu OR mock duck) has been kind of soggy and limp each time I have ordered it. Someone else accurately described it as being like a "tuna salad" on top of two leafs of lettuce. Limpness also plagued the Fried Tofu Appetizer, which was less "Terrific" than the menu leads one to believe. The Thai Sweet Green Curry is really delcious, though. It is warm, rich, flavorful and packed with veggies, tofu and fresh thai basil. The fresh Thai Spring Rolls are also satisfying. I dig the sauce. Free parking is available on the streets nearby, you might need to walk a little ways though. read more

I've never been for anything but happy hour, but the daily happy hour is very good! Sober Fish is a great place to go grab a few drinks and some good Thai and sushi in the Seward neighborhood. The happy hour includes several spicy rolls (like spicy yellowtail, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, dynamite) and then a few not-so-spicy rolls (think salmon skin, California, caterpillar, crunchy, etc.) They don't have any nigiri or sashimi on special. They also have some standard Thai entrees options, such as pad Thai, green curry, etc. it's all pretty good, and you really can't complain about less than $8 for Thai food! I've always been sharing with people so I haven't ever tried to push the envelope on spice, but it has good flavors regardless. They also have some good appetizers, my go-tos always being spring rolls and gyoza. You can eat end up eating a lot of food so watch out! I almost always leave feeling very full, but I can't stop ordering at those prices! Last word of advice: get a Chang beer. That was all I drank in Thailand. read more

Went on a Saturday for the HH sushi. Wasn't sure of the parking so when we walked inside, I asked the hostess if we were ok to park where we were and she shrugged. Our waitress was either at the end of her long shift, or just not having a good day. My partner ordered a ginger ale and was asked for ID. Then waitress goes: wait...let me check if there's alcohol in it. Disappeared and shows up with ginger ale. We ordered HH menu items, including Chicken Pad Thai.
