I'll give the place 3 just because of the interior. Other than that, the food is good, but the portions are pretty small and the price you pay for small portions, well kinda sucks. This review is for the bar, not the restaurant. We've only been here as a stop on our way to a Padres game, but will probably try the restaurant itself sometime soon. It's a beotch trying to get a table in the bar area when the Padres are doing well. This time, we went on Sunday, while the Padres were mired in a 7-game (now 8-game) losing streak, and there was hardly anyone there. The bartenders were nice and didn't ignore us; that was a plus. We ordered their wings and one of the flatbreads, and despite the slow time, it still took a while for our order to come out. The flatbread was good--we had the avocado and rock shrimp version. Generous on the toppings and flavorful! The honey wings, however, were overcooked and chewy. Have had them before, and they were great but this time not so much. Have also had the sliders in the past which were also good. A bit overpriced for bar food, but I guess we're partially paying for the East Village setting. I'm shocked at the reviews of this place. So far, it's the best meal I've had in the Gaslamp. A friend and I stopped in for drinks and a little food. I ordered a fish taco (only $2) and he got shrimp and fries. That $2 fish taco was the best fish taco I have had in a LONG time. For $2 is was a down-right steal. And his fries were fantastic too. Now it seemed some other patrons were a little unhappy with the service, but they were belligerently drunk and loud and seemed to me like they were getting everything they wanted, just not every second they wanted something. All-in-all, this was one of the best meals I've had in San Diego and I''m very impressed. read more

I took my friend here for her birthday and we all had a good time. Our waiter was really friendly and nice. And the food here are really good. I had the free range jadori chicken and it was delicious!! my boyfriend had the prime hanger steak and also loved it. My friends were also saying how they love the food. Overall, I would definitely come back to this place again. If you're looking for a place to hang out, go to Altitude Lounge which is at the rooftop. We ate here and enjoyed people watching during Comic Con. The outdoor patio was nice, the atmosphere was cozy. They were able to get us in for reservations on a Saturday night with less than 24 hours notice -- there really wasn't a crowd there. We just ordered a bunch of appetizers, the ribs were OK, the cheese plate was delish and the BBQ Chicken flatbread was amazing -- next time I think I'll be happy just with the flatbread! My boyfriend and I went to Soleil@k for restaurant week and it was awesome! Everything we had was A-MAZ-ING! For our first course we ordered the roasted red pepper soup and the ahi poke. Both were delicious. For the 2nd course, I ordered the seared scallops with a snap pea risotto. The seared scallops were amazing and cooked to perfection! But, the best thing I have ever put into my mouth was the snap pea risotto! OMG, this was like cheesy ricey goodness on CRACK. To quote my boyfriend, he would like "to bathe in this risotto", "frolic in a pond of it" and "conceive his first child in it". Yep all out of his mouth. He ordered the pork chop which was also really great! Also, I highly recommend the champagne raspberry mojito. Amazing cocktail! Kinda fruity and girly but the boyfriend liked it too! It was a very forgettable dinner. We were one of three parties in the entire restaurant and they sat us next to the entry to the kitchen. The entire meal was interrupted by employees having personal conversations as they walked in or out of the kitchen. I felt like the biggest obstacle in holding a conversation was the staff. Our waiter seemed very uninterested in being our waiter, I couldn't put my finger on it, but he just gave off the impression that we were ruining his night of not having any guests. The food was all pretty decent. Nothing necessarily wrong with it, but not spectacular by any means. A 6/10 on food. I'm a local and was looking for a nice place to take my girlfriend for a night out and this place made me feel like I had taken her to Applebees. If you have a lot of extra money and don't care where it goes, this place is fine. However, for those that a $150 dinner (for 2) is a big night, this place is not for you. Yeah the servers are total assclowns but this is downtown for gods sake... you are going to pay a lot for crappy service! honestly if you address the server with your issue and it does not get resolved reflect it in the tip. If you are looking for a spot to have lunch during Comicon (probably other times too, but that is what brought me to the area) look no further. At the Convention center you will pay $8.50 for a burger, $4.50 for onion rings, and $4.00 for a coke. $17 - $21 for lunch is what the vendors trapped on the showroom floor refer to as the Angry Meal. At Solei @K I got an open-faced hot turkey sandwich, with gravy,cranberry sauce on the side, and fries for $12. And it was thickly carved roasted turkey breast, and lots of it, not processed lunch meat. They also have a 1/2 lb. burger with 2 slices of bacon and cheddar for $14, also with fries. A prime rib sandwich is $16. They have grab-n-go turkey sandwiches with chips and an apple for $10. Really, less than a block from the center where the Mrs. Fields and Starbucks offer financing, you can get a decent lunch for quite a bit less. Edit: OK, so the lunch menu was a special for Thurs - Sat of Comicon, but as of Sunday when the regular lunch menu reappeared, the quality was still there, and it was still quite a bit cheaper than eating crap at the convention center. read more

We sat their as wait staff went by like tumbleweeds. And it wasnt like the food was all that. The Maltre d was a bit snooty too. When a waiter finally did come over it was to say he woud go find us a different waiter (WTF) and then he pulled place settings of questionable cleanliness off another table. Overpriced and kind of gross. I came here for breakfast during Comic Con and it was the only sit down place I could find that wasn't packed. I've been here several times in the past few years and the quality has just plummeted. This was originally the place that made me fall in love with Eggs Benedict. Now, I ordered that years and years ago and every year during Comic Con, I come back to order it. I could actually chart my gradually declining enjoyment of that dish. 2014 came around and I am just grossed out by Soleil's take on it. I had to send back the first attempt because the egg was basically hard boiled and the hollandaise looked chunky and tasted awful. It completely lacked lemon juice and salt and looked like it was whisked by blowing into a straw. The ham wasn't much better tasting. I mean...who screws up ham? The second attempt had an undercooked egg and the same weird "hollandaise" sauce. I just gave up after that. The only saving grace were the hash browns. They were really buttery and crispy. Those were quite good. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to pass on this restaurant in the future. It's a shame...I used to love their eggs benedict and I guess I'll have to settle for Broken Yolk next time. read more

Negligent, slow, scowling service. Mediocre food. High prices. I was wholly unimpressed with how impressed Soleil K seemed to be with itself. We were first-time visitors to San Diego. We picked all our restaurants on a whim, walking past or spotting them from the trolley. We liked every eatery we visited, from holes-in-the-wall to fancy waterfront restaurant... except Soleil K. We were standing on the corner, and looking at the subway sandwich chain across the street, but chose Soleil K. for its sidewalk tables. From that moment forward, I knew we made a mistake. I've had a mix of good and bad service here. When I had a male waiter (I forget his name), he was very attentive and helpful. He checked up on us and made sure all our requests were taken care of. When I had this female waitress (I forget her name as well), she was kind of invisible. Half the time I wasn't sure where she was. Another waiter actually came to tend to me and refill my water. Perhaps I came during their break time. I'm not sure. The food was okay. it's quite pricey for mediocre food. Sure, the meats and fish were decent quality as well. Taste though was nothing special. I've had the seared ahi, which I thought was a C+. I think the best part of the dish was actually the tempura long beans. I love asian flavors, but I don't think I enjoyed the wasabi flavored mash potatoes. The Hangar steak was good, but I didn't quite enjoy it because I had a lot of steak that week. i did really like the mushroom risotto. It oozed with a strong pungent mushroom flavor. love mushrooms :) Definitely an A-OK restaurant. Not 4-stars because there's nothing that would really hook me and make me want to go back for more. read more

We are here for several meals throughout our stay. I have to say the breakfast was not great. I would almost call the buffet lame. For $19 I expected more plus the service was not up to par. We had dinner here twice. The first time the food was great, service good everything worked out perfect. The evening gentleman that seats people is a ray of sunshine! The second time not good. The server was not attentive. We asked for a veggie plate they made a plate w 3 carrots some broccoli and 2 cherry tomatoes. When we asked for some mashed potatoes the server said no problem, we all finished eating we asked about the food and he said there were still 2 tickets in front of us. Wth it was mashed potatoes! Needless to say we did not eat there again. The food was great but they really need to work on the attentiveness of the servers. read more

Haven't dined at Soleil @ K in a few years, but every time I've come here it's always been a great time, as we usually start the night downstairs at the restaurant and end it upstairs at Altitude. For whatever reason, when we got there and told them of our reservation, they took us to a table set for 6, which was definitely wrong as we had more than double that in our RSVP. No worries, they quickly rearranged other tables and got us set up. The staff for the most part is quick and friendly, helping to explain the different dishes and cocktails to those with questions. The place can be a bit pricey, but the dishes are tasty, well portioned, and are well worth it if you're looking to take someone special here for a date before heading up to the aforementioned sky lounge Altitude. The drinks are delicious: from the French 75, to the Moscow Mule and Old Fashion'd. have a few, then head upstairs to enjoy the view of the Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park, and the cool San Diego air. -civilities. read more

This restaurant is inside a hotel near Petco Park; Valet parking included for those dining. During ballgames they have a reduced priced menu for burgers and sandwiches, it looks good. We had the tempura lobster appetizer, AMAZINGLY good, yet small. Our dinners were wonderful and we had plenty for taking some home. Our service was very attentive and the booths very comfortable. I would for sure go again! Dinner with appetizer, bottle of wine and two entrees ran us around $100. It was a GREAT deal for all that included. read more

Even after seeing all the bad reviews about this place, we decided to give it a chance. We went here Saturday evening. The place looks great. The valet was a breeze and free for three hours if you dine here. Can't beat that anywhere downtown! From the time we entered the door, to the time we left, we were treated with nothing but respect. Open seating with a patio-styled space with a mid to top shelf selection of drinks & wines but affordable, domestic beers. Cocktail offerings are delicious. Some are common but with a unique spin or twist and the wines are fairly uncommon offerings. Stained and polished concrete floors with comfortable and casual seating add a casual and modern feel to the small, upscale space. Good for intimate meetings or group outings. This was the worst dinning experience I've had in I cannot remember how long. We were seated. The waiter asked our veberage preference. We asked for coffee and water. More than 10 minutes later, no coffee, no water, no waiter. Finally our coffee arrived. No cream. We waited: coffee got cold. No waiter. Finally waiter arrives. We ask for cream... and wait...and wait. I approach the hostess and politely request service... she makes an excuse promising to attend to the matter. It got worse. Food arrived cold. Three of the four of us had breakfast. The forth person had to wait some more. We had request whole wheat bread got rye... inspite of our polite but determined observations of how deficiently we were being treated the bill arrived; $36 for breakfast for two before gratuaty. Made me so mad I had to warn you and yelp about it. read more

"Padre Breakfast." Outside seating in the shadow of Padres (Father) Stadium is cool. Feels like I'm waking with the city with the sounds on the street. We eat here at least once a week and love it!!! We enjoy the people watching from the patio ... you don't get better people watching than downtown San Diego. We eat breakfast most of the time here, but we have had a few lunches and dinner once. The food is always great here and the staff is very friendly and gives great service! The best deal is the continental breakfast buffet. The fruit is very fresh (they bring out fresh fruit it seems like every 30 minutes). We are huge iced tea fans (I know it sounds crazy) ... so the fact that they have good iced tea is a huge plus for us ;-) The salads at lunch are amazing! I have had 3 different salads and they are all great, especially the chicken ceasar. The location is great if you are from out of town, it is literally steps away from Petco Park and in the heart of East Village and the Gaslamp. read more

Stayed at the Marriott one weekend, my gf and I were looking around for a place to eat within walking distance. We walk outside and we're like hey lets just eat here... It was literally a 5 second walk outside. We sat outside at night... pretty romantic HA ! So first we started off by buying a bottle of wine. We decided hey we're going out tonight clubbing might as well start going HAM on the alky. Wasn't expensive at all I forget the price. FOOD was AWESOME. I didn't have any expectations, didn't read anything about it but reading the reviews here I feel like we went to 2 different restaurants. Service was awesome, food was awesome. No complaints at all. (reviewed February 15, 2007) Soleil@K, the restaurant at the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp, has been hyped by the city's press as one of the hottest places to eat in town. I booked a reservation for Valentine's Day through OpenTable and I forewarned the restaurant that I would be bringing an important guest, and asked that we be treated well. Despite that advance information, the staff attempted to seat us at outdoors (on a cold night) at a curbside table in front of a construction site. After complaining repeatedly, we were shown to a better table, indoors. The restaurant's interior is open, impersonal-modern, cold, noisy. While the adjoining bar is a social hot spot for the younger set, the restaurant crowd was made up of middle aged corporate blanks in rumpled shirts and suits -- probably part of the hotel's convention crowd. On the menu is California cuisine: emphasis on non-traditional ingredient experiments, rather than on what tastes good. My minestrone soup was overcooked and flavorless; my guest's scallop risotto was good but not memorable. The chicken curry satay was overcooked, dry and bland; grilled vegetables were good, albeit very oily; the duck was the only memorable dish. The service was a downer. Knowing my guest's delicate palate, I selected a merlot but our waiter forcefully disagreed, steering us toward a cabernet which proved harsh (to avoid a confrontation on Valentine's, I ended up paying for both wines.) Once our order was taken, the waiter was absent for unforgivably long stretches of time, and even forgot to bring our water until reminded, by which time our dinner was almost over. In the waiter's defense, the restaurant was very busy. Still, one does go to a restaurant expecting to be well served. Strip the hype away, and Soleil@K serves nothing more than window-dressed corporate hotel food. Coupled with the lamentable service, I certainly would not recommend Soleil@K as the fine dining venue it's trumped up to be. This disconnect is so typical of San Diego, a provincial city where the local press is boosterish and nary a discouraging word is heard about the mediocrity of the expensive restaurants. After dinner we segued to Altitude, the Marriott's much-hyped sky bar. This experience turned out to be even more disappointing than the restaurant. The bar is located right next to the hotel's gym (? what were they thinking?). The decor is predictable and screams corporate cost control. Our drinks were terribly prepared yet expensive, and the music was downright annoying (loud seventies rock on Valentine's Day????) The bar was totally overrun by corporate types, not a romantic crowd by anyone's standards. The one nice feature is the view, but then that's par for the course at a sky bar. read more

I know, I know. It's a restaurant contained in a downtown hotel in the heart of the Gaslamp tourist zone - first red flag. It was 5PM, Comic Con was in full swing, and every restaurant in a 9-block radius was packed with a minimum 30-minute wait to get a table, while this restaurant looked empty with plentiful seating either inside or out - second red flag. But it was 90+ degrees on the sidewalks with sardine-can crowds rapidly growing larger, and the prospect of immediate seating and cold drinks was by far the best option around so in we went. To say I ended up pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. We weren't looking for anything fancy, just an early-evening refuel so we could foray back into the convention center and pick up where we left off. I ordered the Soleil burger ($16) which came with their Tavern fries and my GF ordered their Rustic Club sandwich ($14). I have long lamented the fact that very few restaurants are able to make fries crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Shouldn't be hard, right? But it's typically no dice - they're either limp or nuked or some unappetizing combination of both. It turns out Soleil@k has cooking fries absolutely nailed. The Tavern fries were thick cut and pre-seasoned and the chef cooked these in the Belgian "Frites" style with a delicious perfect crunch outside and a soft creamy center inside. I now know where to get the best fries in San Diego - right here at Soleil@k. The Soleil burger featured natural beef, aged cheddar, and incredible glazey thick-cut bacon and came with lettuce, tomato, and onion. It also came with a fried egg which I asked to have served on the side on a separate plate. The burger was simple, perfectly cooked, and very flavorful. Sometimes simple can be best and Soleil@k proved the truth of this to us yet again. Accompanied by a pint of ice-cold draft Heineken it was the best burger and fries combo I have had in years. My GF enjoyed her club sandwich which came with the same awesome bacon as my burger and she ate my fried egg as well. This was really good food. Our server was Harper and she provided outstanding professional and friendly service during our visit. So there you have it - appearances can sometimes be deceiving. I can't speak to their other menu items but based on their Soleil burger and Tavern fries I would consider returning to Soleil@k just to order these again. read more

Great location and ambiance, bartenders were super friendly and knew their stuff. The kitchen must have sold their souls to the devil because the flavors matched perfectly. However, the wait staff, wait a minute.....or lots of minutes because the hostess was bothered by us and we think our server must have been covering a shift because he was somehow super busy only dealing with two tables and seemed to be in the kitchen more than the cooks! Seriously, two tables on a Sunday night, and captain slow-poke gave us the bill after being asked, and waited ten minutes to pick it up-hello guy- don't you want to close us out so you can focus on 50% of the work?
