Went to Somerville on a Sunday night and had a mixed experience. The food saved the night, but the service was disappointing. We had reservations and were seated at 8:45 pm. The reservation system made it seem like the restaurant was very busy since we were asked to wait at the bar, but once inside there were at least five to seven empty tables. A gentleman who was not our waiter came by at 8:57 to ask for water orders, then never returned. Our actual waiter came over at 9:00, took our drink and food order, and brought my Coke quickly. After that, both staff members walked past our table multiple times without bringing water or checking in. I eventually had to call over a manager to ask for water, which we finally received at 9:07. Another odd note, they were sold out of rolls when we ordered, even though a table seated after us received an order of rolls. The bright spots were the jazz band and the food. The live music was excellent and set a great vibe. The kale salad with the puree at the bottom was delicious, and we also enjoyed the Brussels sprouts and short rib pasta. Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience at this restaurant. I made a reservation for 8 pm for two and arrived 10 minutes ahead of time to make sure we were checked in on time. The hostess at first didn't even acknowledge my presence and instead turned her attention to a guest who had come out of the restaurant after I walked up. After finally acknowledging me, she preceded to tell me that reservations were running 30 minute behind. Fine, I ask if I can wait at the bar, which I was told I could. The bar was extremely busy with people trying to find space to stand since all the seats were taken. My friend arrived and was then told she couldn't even enter the restaurant due to the crowd. She even told them we had a reservation, which did not seem to matter. By this time, it was about 8:25 pm. No biggie. My friend and I grab a drink and proceed to have conversation until our table was ready. While talking, it dawned on me that this restaurant has no system to notify guest when their tables are ready. I went to the front and asked the hostess how will she inform me that my table is ready in which I was told, "we will find you"...which is interesting cause like I stated, the restaurant was super crowded. At this point it's 9:10 and I again go to the hostess, who was outside chatting and laughing with friends, to see where my name is on the list. Coincidently, our table was ready which I believe our table was always ready and the hostess just didn't take the time to find us. Pros: the drinks and the ambiance of the restaurant are 10/10. I really enjoyed the music and how intimate the restaurant felt. In terms of food, everything felt overpriced for what was on the menu. Maybe it's just me but I rather pay for a better dished meal such as roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and a vegetable rather than roasted chicken and French fries for more than 30 Dollars. Additionally, rolls are 18 dollars which seems a bit much. We ended up ordering the crab salad and French fries which were decent. Unfortunately, I won't be back but I hope changes are made for customers to have a better experience. read more

One lady had on puma slides, I see why she was turned away. The resturant has valet service however you can find self park on the street. Inside is beautiful, the atmosphere is chill with a nice jazz/speakeasy vibe. I love the color, decor, bar and the way the restaurant seating is situated. Great spot for a drinks after work or a nice date night with your boo. The disappointment for me was with the food. Its absolutely horrible to me. Most resturant provide bread but here its $19, however I must say the bread was good. I ordered short ribs ($48) all I received was meat and roux. That plate was not worth $48 I was still hungry after. My daughter ordered the lobster mac, absolutely no flavor at all, small amount of lobster ($38). My neice order the Lasagna greens again no flavor and the portions are small. My daughter and neice sent their food back and order fries ( fastfood fries for damn near $20). For me this is a great place to have a drink ( which are expensive but that's to be expected in LA) and listen to music. Definitely eat before you come cause you will be pissed. read more

This is a temporary review as I know the restaurant is still trying to get its footing. In a few months, I expect Somerville to be able to hit 5 stars. TL,DR: lovely design, kind staff, great tasting dishes, slow service, limited menu, terrible parking situation. Even with a reservation, prepare to wait AND calculate an extra 20 minutes to use valet. There are some self park spots in the back however, after looping a few times we went with valet. Biggest complaint is they ran out of their hot buttered rolls (the audacity) and it truly was dark AF in there. We couldnt see our menus. Our table shared the collard lasagna and loved. Its certainly more of a starter and less on an entree (smaller portion/meatless). The Brussels were my favorite. Very saucy but excellent flavor! We also ordered the fried chicken and caviar. So I went to Somerville with two of my girls on Wednesday, October 1st. We sat at the bar and our bartender was cool as hell. Friendly, funny, and even jumped in our convo a few times with jokes. We loved it. Vibes were right, drinks were good, and the food? Excellent. Now here's where things went left. The place is dark, which I get, it sets a vibe. But for three brown women trying to take a cute little picture at the bar, the phone flash just wasn't cutting it. No big deal. I pulled out my small phone light, leaned it against my water cup, took one quick photo and a short video. I was literally in the middle of turning it off when this overzealous white or Latina manager storms over with an attitude talking about, "You can't have that light, for the privacy of our guests." Ma'am, please. I was already turning it off. Even our bartender looked confused and told us he didn't mind the light at all. Nobody did. It honestly felt like she just had an issue with three beautiful Black women enjoying themselves. Anyway, we finished our food, paid, and went to the bathroom. Recorded a few IG stories like everyone does and I tagged Somerville saying I'd drop a Yelp review about what happened. They actually responded the next day apologizing and said someone from their executive team would reach out. This was October 2nd. I waited. On October 7th they said the GM was out but hadn't forgotten me. Then on October 17th they claimed the GM couldn't reach me by phone and asked for my email, which was a damn lie because I didn't miss any calls and nobody left a voicemail. Fast forward to today, October 23rd. Still no follow-up, no email, nothing. So yeah, here's my Yelp review. The food was good, the bartender was great, but the management? Unprofessional. First time at Somerville and wow--what a vibe! It honestly felt like I was in Manhattan, New York with that same upscale, lively energy. The live jazz band set the perfect tone, and the ambience felt both elegant and welcoming from the moment we walked in. True rating is a 4.5 I truly loved everything about this restaurant. As soon as I walked in, I was amazed at the elegance of the ambiance inside. I also loved the added touch of the live jazz band, which I believe really elevated the dining experience. Our waitress was really knowledgeable and recommended menu items to us that were definitely winners. 1. Fried Chicken Caviar Sliders: Loved them! We love sitting at the bar. The Vince Vaughn looking bartender is wonderful, attentive and makes ya feel good. This past time, was the first time that we sat at a real table to dine. We had friends in town and we wanted to show them that we have some nice predominately black establishments too! Since Houston has plenty. We showed up early, thanks to our KMEETS black car service. Valet was easy. Check in was easy, but they asked us to wait at the bar. This bar experience wasn't as pleasant since we didn't get Vince. We got the guy with glasses, who seemed friendly enough in the past. This time, idk, he was off and not inviting.. For 4 drinks at a quick $94, I want to feel welcome.. I mean, a hello in the first minute would have been good. Moving on. Our table was nice, Our waiter whose name started with a J.. was eh.. This place is incredible! I finally got a chance to visit Somerville this past weekend and I was impressed. The restaurant is nestled on Slauson in the Windsor Hills area of Los Angeles. There are several neighborhood restaurants, shops and even an art gallery in the same complex that I recommend checking out as well. The ambiance and decor of Somerville feels cinematic with its dark wood, black and white vintage photographs and moody lighting. Even the bathroom has a gorgeous art deco design. The food was quite tasty and gave an elevated interpretation of classic dishes that you might see prepared with love in your grandmother's kitchen. The food was served hot and with quality ingredients that you can taste. Everything we ordered was delicious and had amazing flavor. The service was also elevated with friendly staff that appeared to value their customers and worked to support the elegant dining experience. During the visit a live jazz band played music sets which included interpretations of jazz greats like Coltrane. If you plan to visit make sure that you dress up and look the part. I'm all about supporting our people. When I heard there was a supper club geared toward us, I was all in! I initially thought the reservation system was broken, as I couldn't get a reservation. A couple of weeks later, in January, my friend texted that she had just made a reservation--for March! Talk about filling a niche! They are booked a quarter of the year out! Parking is ample in the back (with Hilltop Cafe), but they charge $15 for valet in the front. The hosts are at the door, outside. What are they going to do when it rains? They invite you to wait for your table inside. Bad idea. There is not only no waiting seating, but you are standing for your reservation with 10 other folk who walked in, and are in wait fir a cancellation. The ambiance is old style classy...you know, 60s shiek lounge. Very nice. The live band is definitely worth coming to chill here, like a lounge (as there's also an abundance of lounge, versus table seating). The acoustics won't allow you to hear your party over their music, though. Service was great. Managers accommodating and checking on us. Servers assuring our drinks are topped off. Servers ensuring we are good during meal service. 5-star service. The menu has one selection of each entree (i.e., poultry, beef, pork, pasta). There are an overabundance of cocktails. The ladies said the cocktails were delicious; I had water. The truffle fries and duck were table winners. We had grumbles about the rest. While the food was just alright (lovely presentations, no seasoning at all, decent portions), the service was great (my people, showing their engaging competencies), and the ambiance was almost stellar (acoustics are lacking, so that the stellar band overtakes table conversation). read more

Introducing black tablecloths, black napkins, and a fully set table with silverware could instantly enhance the dining caliber and help Somerville present itself on par with Michelin-starred establishments -- a level I sincerely believe this restaurant can achieve. What makes Somerville shine most brightly, however, is its people. The staff was warm, kind, and deeply invested in creating a stellar guest experience. Our server, Dennis, deserves special recognition for his attentiveness, and Rory, the Vice President of Culinary, reflected a leadership presence that sets the tone for excellence throughout the restaurant. Somerville has already secured a place on my list of recommendations to friends, family, and colleagues. In fact, I find its food even more pleasing to my palate than certain Michelin-starred restaurants I've dined at -- and I don't say that lightly. It looks so simple but elegant from the outside and as they guide you in through the curtain into the dining area, seems that you was transported to another period of time. The jazz was playing. It was dim lit, and the food was amazing. Our server whose name is Tiffany was also amazing. She was able to explain the menu items in detail and her preference. She was really good at her job. T place was clean, immaculately clean from the women's bathroom all the way through the dining room. This was a treat for my son for a belated Mother's Day dinner and he cannot have picked a better spot to take his mom. I tried the chivalry salad which was so bomb and for my entree the Chicken breast was amazing. The drinks were good as well. A love supreme is what I got and it was on point. Also. We ordered the crab salad, black goddess salad, halibut, Mary's organic roasted chicken, Parker house rolls, mashed potatoes, and cheesecake. Everything I ate was fresh, hot, well-seasoned and delicious. The roasted chicken was tender and juicy. The service was impressive. Our waiter, Hassan was very informative, kind, and personable and made great suggestions for entrees. He was attentive and gave outstanding service. Every worker I encountered while enjoying my dinner was very professional nice and helpful. The restaurant had a nice cozy atmosphere, a huge bar, nice decor, dim lighting, a nice quantity of food items on the menu, and alcoholic drinks. Note: Valet parking or self-parking on the street. They have a live Jazz band with a three percent charge added to your bill. Make sure they advise you about the live band payment included in your bill otherwise, they will charge you without you knowing. They did not inform us so they took it off the bill. After a Thursday evening visit (8:30pm res), feeling: unamused and disinterested. I think every table around me felt similarly - some even complained to management about their experience. Door to table time was around 30min after arriving promptly for the reservation. Waited at the bar, waited for service at the table, waited for food. Our server seemed confused if our table was his or not. I would describe the restaurant as moderately busy. When we were trying to close and leave, it was near empty. Pea and crab salad ($29), scallop crudo ($30), short rib pasta ($32), grilled broccolini ($16), chicken sliders ($29), 2 drinks (forget me not and martini - both fair!) It's giving average food from any other 3 star "acclaimed" restauranteur-owned establishment in the city. The salad was the most on trend item, though I feel like I was so hungry when it arrived- anything would've been tasty. Scallop was looking like 1/2 a scallop per shell in a caprese package, average and disappointing. Slider appetizer came after all the other food, it was not as special as other reviews make it out to be. Very chick fil a and there's like a fish nearby when they make it. They were out of the main chicken which I did try to order. For ~$100/pp, I would go to a place I've been to and love. Ambiance is lovely, high lofted low lit environment staged in another era. Live music is great, music my night was Jazz covers of pop music. Table formation is strange, I was at a smaller table in the middle of restaurant, I felt like I was seated for the viewing pleasure of the booth in front of me and angled in the viewing paths of other patrons. Wouldn't be interested in returning. I felt like I was compelling myself to be in a good mood. I felt like most of the team did not want to be there and seemed exhausted. My table was a little confused most of the time because there seemed to be many staff both on the serving and bussing side but we struggled to be waited on to order, for water and to close. I thought the hosts were very very nice. This visit was an Infatuation-listed visit which I continue to be skeptical about. I was so excited when I saw Issa post that reservations are now available on OpenTable. I immediately reserved a few weeks out in advance and was so surprised about the availability compared to prior months I was checking. I made an easy reservation for a party of 5 and checking in was super easy day of. There is either street parking, valet in front of the restaurant with a cost, or parking in the back, though I'm unsure about the cost of that since I found street parking across from the restaurant. From the outside, you'd have no idea Somerville looks the way it does inside! Upon entering, you immediately feel the modern jazz club vibes inside. Lots of wood, mood lighting, beautiful furniture, and just overall classy vibes. The layout inside is cute and unique especially with the way the tables and booths are shaped. We wanted to try so many things on the menu so we ordered to share: - parker house rolls (5/5): omg amazing, I LOVED the truffle butter on this. - baked mac and cheese with lobster (5/5): delicious! I wish this dish was a bit larger actually lol - brussels sprouts (5/5): perfectly cooked, just the right flavor and crispiness - egg yolk raviolo (3/5): just ok to me, there were many flavors and textures in a bite so it threw me off a bit - striped bass (10/5): lol this was our favorite dish! that curry was doing something with the fish... crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. next time, I'm getting my own lol - mary's organic roasted chicken (5/5): bomb! it did get a little try as you work your way towards the breast ofc but this was definitely in my top 3! - collard green lasagna (5/5): whoever came up with this idea... genius. I would have never thought this pairing would taste as incredible as it did. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish! My second favorite. Our server was super kind and was impressed with us being ready to eat everything lol water cup stayed filled bc they always came around as well! Highly recommend checking Somerville out. A friend has been wanting to come here for several months and we finally were able to coordinate it and get a reservation. The ambiance was beautiful. There was live jazz music and very dim lighting. Everyone from the hosts to the wait staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered the following: Parkerhouse rolls - delicious but overpriced Crab and pea tendril salad - good but you must like mustard. I don't really care for crab, but I still found this to be fresh and delicious. Chicken sliders - crispy, tasty chicken. They should do these on the parkerhouse rolls though! Short ribs - tender and tasty. Older menus say this is in some sort of peanut sauce but that is thankfully no longer the case Striped bass - I despise curry so this was definitely not for me. But everyone else said it was good. Collard green lasagna - tasty and a little lemony. Our picky eater of the group actually has two helpings of it even though she hates collard greens. Mac and cheese with lobster - very good! Overall, the food was good but nothing exceptional for the price. Glad we came and had the experience but we all agreed it was a one and done. The hype is real! The place is truly a unicorn- one of a kind. The open space, high ceilings and acoustics make for a very welcoming and soul touching experience. It's is the epitome of sexy. The music greets you the minute you walk in. The service is stellar- Freddy at the bar was kind, relatable, and thorough despite being VERY busy and pulled in different directions he greeted us and treated us like neighbors that had met before. We had the Mac & cheese+ lobster- delightful. So damn good we should have ordered two! The black goddess salad was the perfect side. A must- a must- a must!!! read more

If you like chill vibes and good food check this place out. First we weren't sure about the parking lot out back as it said private property and didn't know who could park there so we valet for $15 (+tip). Walking inside was wonderful. I honestly wasn't expecting the decor, lighting, mood, and ambience this place had. It's definitely for the grown crowd. The lighting is a little too low to take good quality photos but it's worth being there in the moment. We had a 9pm reservation and waited till 9:30 at the bar to be seated. There was just enough people at the bar/restaurant. It wasn't over crowded like some places. The music was loud enough where you could hear it but still hold a conversation. We were disappointed by not hearing the live band play. Not sure where it's listed but they play from 6:30-8:30. The food was delicious. I highly recommend the chicken caviar sliders. You get 2 for $26. The caviar tasted more like capers to me. The chicken was seasoned the way e like our food seasoned. The sliders are large enough to share one. My husband had the lamb shank for $38. It was tender, seasoned well, and fulfilling. The brussel sprouts ($16) were seasoned well too but they were soft, not crunchy (which I prefer). I also shared the collared green lasagna ($32) with a friend (they ran out). It was delicious. Loved the cheese. But honestly the taste became overpowering after a while. So it's perfect to share with one or two people. Overall I would love to come back. The service was great! Here are a few tips though. 1. Come early. They haven't figured out the logistics of how much food to have yet. There were a few things they ran out of on the menu and certain cocktail drinks. 2. Call and ask about the time the live band will be playing that night. 3. Double check about the parking if you don't want to valet. 4. Make a reservation. The earlier the better. 5. Somerville is an awesome experience. A group of 5 of us had a reservation for Saturday night to celebrate Mother's Day. It was the first visit for all of us, except for my daughter. (Reservations are recommended.) We arrived a few minutes early and parking was easy with valet in front of the building as well as in the back of the building. There is free parking in the back as well if you can find an open space. I believe it was $20 for valet. This is a fine dining restaurant, so if the parking fee puts you off, this might not be the place for you. Plan to drop some coin here but I promise you it will be worth it! The host at the door, Yasmin (I hope that is right), was welcoming and treated us like a VIP. She invited us to the bar while we waited to be seated. The bartender, Enrique, greeted us right away and provided a walk through of their signature cocktails. The ambiance was inviting, lowkey exciting with its dim lighting which created a bit of mystery to the well balanced mix of modern and art deco-ish room (check out their clean and beautifully designed bathrooms too. The flooring gives Great Gatsby vibes.) We were first service as it just opened at 6P. We were sat in a booth within a few minutes. This seems like a great date night location or seems best for small groups, 5 or less. I heard they have a private room upstairs that can accommodate more but the live jazz band is in the main restaurant and you want to be front and center for that because Brian, the music director who introduced himself to us, produces an amazing set. The music really sets the vibe, and people met the vibe with style! I had wished I had worn my little black dress. Once seated, Dennis introduced himself, filled our water glasses, walked through the menu, and providing some awesome suggestions. He was simply pleasant and attentive, making sure we were well taken care of throughout our stay, he didn't miss a beat. Let's get into the food and drinks because I can honestly say this was the best meal I've ever had in my life. I can't say fine dining is my regular style of dining but I feel I've had enough experience to compare and even without it, the most important thing is I enjoyed this meal immensely. From my first cocktail, the Sweet Tone with Patron Reposado Tequila with a hint of raspberry, lemon and orange. Sweetly refreshing! Followed by the delicious Heyday (Hennessy VS with mandarin and lemon adds). We had champagne for a Mother's Day toast which was crisp and clean. I hear the Mighty River was a win and they make a nice Old Fashioned. First course we had the melt in your mouth Parker House Rolls and Classic Shrimp Cocktail (now I don't usually like cocktail sauce because I don't like horseradish - this was amazing - no over powering tastes, just a perfect blend of flavor with a brush of sweetness.) and the Tuna Crudo which did not disappoint. For the main dishes, two of us had the Collard Green Lasagna (which was so rich and filling that we ate only a 1/4 of the skillet and my leftovers were just as delicious the next day for breakfast because I couldn't wait to taste it again!). Mom had the tender mouthwatering Braised Shortribs and she remarked that the risotto takes first place in her recent comparisons. Mary's Organic Roasted Chicken is a favorite and my daughter had the Hamachi Crudo which is a starter but is her favorite dish at Somerville. For sides we had the "lawd have mercy!" Baked Macaroni & Cheese, the Brussel Sprouts (sweet and tangy with crispy savory bits of deliciousness) and please don't skip the Truffle Fries (perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside snow capped with shredded cheese. YUM!) If we wondered how this meal could be any better, all we had to do was wait for dessert. We shared three and I received them in this order Tres Leches (this being my favorite cake in general, I've had many but this was the best ever, moist, light and rich with flavor at the same time = heaven), the Chocolate Torte with strawberry gelato is a perfect pairing (sink your teeth into a thick warm chunk of chocolate in contrast with the cool sweetness of gelato), and lastly was the firmly smooth yet creamy delectable Leche Flan topped with the unexpected smokey caramel crispy bits. Each dessert was better than the next. Flan landed as my personal favorite but I wouldn't be surprised if I had tried it in any other order, the last would be my favorite - they just continued to impress! I want to make mention that throughout the night, dirty dishes were promptly removed, new utensils provided, water glasses were kept full (they're happy to provide lemon if you ask), and the service was 5 star! I'm always excited when a new Black-owned, upscale, and aesthetically pleasing restaurant opens nearby. I made reservations back in Feb/March for May and had been looking forward to it, so I was really disappointed when they called just four days before to cancel due to being closed that day, especially since reservations are hard to get. I was able to reschedule, and while parking was a hassle even right at opening, we were seated quickly. The ambiance was beautiful, and the live music added a nice touch. Although we enjoyed most of our meals, we definitely wished there were more options, ideally some more regular-ish choices.. especially given the price point. Somerville is honestly so good, the hype is real. Brought my bestie here to celebrate her breakup. The staff was super supportive and gave the best service. They checked in appropriately, moved us to a bigger table when they saw how much food we ordered, helped us immediately and did not make us feel bad when we spilled water on ourselves, friendly conversations. The BEST part was that they even surprised us with a gorgeous "congrats on your breakup!" cake, delivered by the chef. It was just like being a restaurant guest on The Bear. Super cool, sweet moment. My friend and I went here recently and had an amazing dining experience. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to snag seats at the bar. The service was great, the bartenders were very attentive and the drink was amazing. I ordered the roasted chicken that comes with fries and let me tell you...that lemon rosemary gravy that came with...to die for. They have a string duo playing to elevate the mood and the dimly lit atmosphere really added to the experience. I recommend making a resy because they get crowded quick! read more
