After a very scary first blood test for our little guy, we told him he could pick any treat he wanted. He said frozen yogurt so a search on Yelp commenced. We found SomiSomi and headed right over. We walked into the very clean store and tried to take in the full series of choices we had ahead of us. SomiSomi is like a choose your own adventure in dessert. It starts with your choice of soft serve. They do not allow you to taste the soft serve, which I guess I understand, but it's a little disheartening because a full dessert here isn't cheap so you really don't want to make a wrong choice. We chose strawberry. Next choice point is how you want it served. They have a fish-shaped waffle cone (Taiyaki) which you can use as the vehicle to hold your soft serve, put it on top of your soft serve in a cup, put on the side etc. We chose to put our soft serve in a cup and have the fish bite the top. Then you choose what to stuff inside your fish (nutella, red bean, custard etc). And then you choose your toppings. We chose fruity pebbles and they also allow you either a macaron or a big fresh strawberry. Our assessment of this dessert they call Ah-boong? Very good! The soft serve is creamy dreamy deliciousness. The Taiyaki fish is soft and flavorful. Love that you can put a flavor inside. And I was surprised how good the fruity pebbles tasted in this thing. All together, the dessert was both yummy and unique. I would give this 5-stars but the price-point is kind of high and since there is no ability to taste the flavor before you purchase the whole thing, it's a little nerve wracking. read more

I fell in love with Somisomi in Hawaii years ago when their menu was simpler. Excited to try this location. We came and ordered 4 cookies n cream soft serves with upside down fish (advertised as Korean dessert even though taiyaki and matcha are Japanese, and ube is Filipino). It was empty so service was quick but by the time we walked out, not even 1 minute, it was already melting and turning into liquid. Flavor was very sweet, even though their tagline is "not too sweet." Parking was easy to find nearby in the middle of the day on a weekday, but there is no actual street parking or lot, and this place isn't worth going out of my way for. I'd read that their desserts are lactose free, but something is wrong because I had horrible stomach for the rest of the entire day. The whole family felt sorry for me. This led me to look up the ingredient list, which is mysteriously not available to the public. They list allergens and nutrition facts but no ingredients. In this era of transparency, if you don't publicize an ingredient list, you're hiding something. I do not recommend this place for anyone with a sensitive stomach. Certain companies think that marketing and hype will fool people, and it obviously works in Fullerton. Hard no for me. I love all things that make up SomiSomi. Their soft serves are delicious; their taiyaki is made fresh to order with a crisp exterior & a bouncy, fluffy, mochiko interior, and of course the delicious fillings. The franchises are fairly consistent, I think I've only been to one where my soft serve melted instantly and it would be the time I ordered it in an Ah-boong (the cone), ever since then I've had too much anxiety to just get the Ah-boong, lol. Now I always get the upside down Ah-boong so I can enjoy it and not stress about my soft serve running down my arms. The one thing I absolutely love about this location is the shared, intimate and relaxing courtyard (we stopped by on a Saturday at 1pm, not busy at all) where you can sit and enjoy your SomiSomi haul. I will say though that compared to other franchises this location's taiyaki fillings are more concentrated to the fish body. I've been to other locations where I had filling in a good part of the tail too, but it's not a big deal I'll still eat it lol. We came today for a cold treat. Ordered one matcha soft serve in a cup, one sweet corn soft serve in a cup, a cookies and cream soft serve in a cup, and an ube soft serve in a cup with upside down ahboong (waffle fish cone) with red bean filling. The ahboong was perfectly lightly crispy on the outside and mochi chewy on the inside. Matcha and ube are good go-to flavors for us. Not too sweet, which is how we like it. Cookies and cream was ok. Nothing special. Let me save you the trouble of wondering whether to try the sweet corn flavor soft serve. Don't do it! Yes, it tastes like corn. But somehow, that flavor with a sweet dairy ice cream base didn't work. For us, it didn't sit that well and we even burped up the taste afterwards. This is one of those rotating flavors, so it might not be there when you visit. If it is still available, I recommend passing on it. We asked if we could have a sample taste before we bought it, but Somi Somi doesn't do samples. We're still glad we tried it because it's different, but it's definitely not a flavor we would try again. We couldn't even finish the cup of it we bought. Someone in our family suffers from nut allergies so we appreciate how they label their offerings with a little nut symbol warning when appropriate. I'm not sure why the custard would have nuts, but we stay away from that filling just in case. Maybe they are concerned about cross contamination? Store layout is very simple with just some tall table benches (no where to sit). So buy your treat and go (one table with 2 chairs outside) or stand at one of the tall tables to enjoy your treat in their air conditioned store. It doesn't look like staff regularly wipe the tables so there might be crumbs or whatever from previous guests, but overall it's clean. No public restrooms available inside in case you were wondering. Service was super fast. We just put in the order with one staff member and the other staff member had the order pretty much done by the time we walked those ten steps to the pickup area. read more

I am a fan of Taiyaki, but I feel like so many places get it wrong and Somi Somi does it just right, both from a texture and sweet point-of-view. The photos of Taiyaki always make it look good that plenty of places get away with just having Instagrammable photos of food. Late night snack!! This location is my favorite late night hangout for snacks. I was very satisfied usually but tonight I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it was Friday night and they were very busy. They finished my order and just left it on the counter without calling my name. I was waiting over 10 minutes for my 2 yaki. When I wanted to ask them and saw a little box sitting on the counter. I don't think leaving a customer order (open box) on the counter is a good idea. Thinking how many customers In the store? I definitely recommend the Matcha, I loved the taste of that ice cream not too sweet with a little taste of tea. Another good one is black sesame. It keeps things interesting and i'm able to try something new. This time i got milk tea & oreo swirl and WHOA perfect flavor combo!! I got sprinkles on top and custard in my fish. I ALWAYS get custard; somisomi puts just the right amount and really complements the soft serve. I wanted to try the oreo taiyaki but i was in the mood for ice cream! Hopefully next time. I came to SomiSomi on the recommendation of a coworker. Since the first visit, we've been back 2 more times in as many weeks. The waffle is soft with a little crunch around the edges. Taiyaki Flavors we ordered: Taro Red Bean Custard The batter for the taiyaki very much reminds me of mochi. While the outside is crisp, the inside has a soft chewy goodness. After a few bites, you'll find the filling of your choice. I really enjoyed the custard and taro. The red bean was more liquid than I expected. While still tasty, I would have preferred if the red bean was a paste. The red bean consists of sweet whole red beans in a bit of liquid. I can't wait to be back! As always, as with every Somisomi we visit, they are always spotlessly clean, flooring for the ordering queue properly labeled for social distancing, hand sanitizer offering, and manned by friendly, efficient staff. We placed our orders: Matcha in a cup ($3.95) and an oreo/matcha swirl with a nutella taiyaki served upside down in a cup ($5.95). Our pre-tip total was $9.90. Our two items were quickly served to us. We walked outside and found a small patio seating area with a couple of small tables to the side of Somisomi. We sat here and enjoyed our frozen deliciousness while people watching. This spot just open up recently I think last year. I been to different locations before in Irvine. I absolutely love it. I like the concept and the flavors of the ice cream. The fish cone is made like a waffle cone but flaky and not too sweet. The ice cream is like frozen custard which is thick. I recommend getting the matcha swirl.
