I like coming here to grab a little sweet treat then sitting by the grass area in the front of the movie theater to just chill I definitely recommend sharing with a friend unless you're craving a good amount of ice cream since it's always too much for me to finish alone. I tried the milk flavor and it tasted like how I expected I guess but it was pretty plain I tried the Dubai chocolate taiyaki a while ago too and thought it was too much pistachio flavor and not enough chocolate. They have a handful of flavors and switch out the different swirls every week or so. They're known for the soft serve and tayaki together, but you can get each on its own. It's awesome since you can add different fillings as well. They offer different unlimited toppings. It's so cool that SomiSomi has become popular culture. I used to live in San Diego, where I felt it was in a predominantly Asian area but this one is in Bella Terra and has become mainstream! I absolutely love it and there's usually a bit of a line but it always moves fast. While it has some classic Asian flavors, there's always a basic flavor for those not as adventurous (chocolate / cookies and cream). They have a flavor that usually alternates too. I've been here on a number of occasions, but my friend who is a HB local had never been so I decided to take him to try it out. We went on a Sunday evening and there was a line out the door (though after we got out dessert that line doubled in length - nevertheless, they're pretty quick so I wouldn't be scared by the lines). I usually get their Taiyaki's which are hot fish shaped treats that have a filling of your choice. I usually get custard, Nutella or Oreo but honestly I think you it just depends on your mood. On my most recent visit though I decided to get a soft serve, which also includes toppings of your choice. I picked a matcha/oreo swirl and got matcha and oreo crumbs as the toppings. This shop is Located at the Bella Terra shopping center in Huntington Beach, CA. There is plenty of parking out front. The concept is really cute and the menu very simple. I tried the Matcha soft serve which was really creamy and not too sweet. And i had 2 Taiyakis. 1 with Nutella and 1 with Custard. The Taiyaki is served warm off the waffle press. It is slightly crunchy and the delicious filling oozes out when you bite into it. Everything was delicious. The service is good and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. There was one cheerful young woman working when I walked in. A large group had arrived just before me and she was really hustling to get their order made. Everything is made to order. She apologized that it took her a couple minutes to get to me but I actually was impressed with how quickly I was helped, considering the number of orders she was single-handedly making before mine. I ordered two taiyaki - those fish-shaped waffles with delicious fillings. I chose Nutella and custard to fill mine. There are counters you can stand at inside the shop but it was a beautiful day so I sat outside at one of the many courtyard tables. I started with a plump one which was crammed full of Nutella. It was piping hot so I had to let it cool a bit before devouring it, a few blobs of Nutella dribbling down my chin. The other was filled with plenty of custard, mildly sweet and satisfying. The waffles with the fish imprints were perfectly made, slightly crisp and tasty. Soft Serve (8.5/10): The ube part of the swirl was super soft, creamy, and delicious. The ube soft serve was definitely made with ube extract, so it may not be the most authentic, but I still love the flavor of ube extract, so I enjoyed the soft serve a lot. The dalgona part of the swirl did not have any dalgona/toffee/caramelized sugar flavor, it just tasted like the milk soft serve. I'm not sure if it was supposed to taste like that, but the dalgona flavor did not shine through. I was a little disappointed because it was a limited time flavor, but the overall soft serve was still super delicious! Custard Taiyaki (7/10): The Taiyaki was slightly crispy, but it wasn't warm or as fresh as it could've been. There wasn't enough custard in the Taiyaki, which made me a little sad. The Taiyaki and custard was still perfectly sweetened and definitely pairs well with the rest of the soft serve. Overall Thoughts: I still think Somisomi is a really solid soft serve and Taiyaki shop. I just think this place could have made the Taiyaki a little fresher, considering there was no line and only two customers when I visited. There are no seats, just tables. During the time we visited, it was pretty quiet because most people end up eating outside. Since this is the best Taiyaki shop I've tried so far, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because I know there's not a lot of places like this. Japanese dessert yes please! Rarely do I go out and get dessert because it's usually not worth it. But somisomi is definitely a dessert worth getting. I get the Taiyaki filled with either mung bean or Nutella. This last time I got the Nutella filled, and it was heavenly, a must have. I went here tonight and there was a long line, which I am ok with and happy people love this place. However, $7 for a soft serve ice cream seems high to me. There are several nice toppings but I am all about quality of ice cream and this place did not perform in that area.
