Can't go wrong with the upside down ahboong paired the matcha soft serve ice cream! The matcha is rich and flavorful but not too sweet. They also give the option to add toppings. My only complaint (but I won't hold it against them) is the line that goes all the way to the parking lot and the limited parking during peak hours. read more

Never liked oreo topping too much solely cuz how sweet treats get when combined with oreo. Thought the oreos would be crushed/crumbled oreo but o' was I wrong. Might have been one of my favorite flavor now. The oreois placed whole, mixed with the mochi batter, oreo inside gets soft just how I like them. Combine both and you have something similar to a fried oreo but better since its not too sweet likes ones sold in fairs. Very nice. read more

While I am not a connoisseur of taiyaki desserts, I am a fan of SomiSomi's selections and plan to revisit sooner than later. They were busy, but worked promptly. It was an electronic self-serve purchase via tablet/iPad. I played it safely initially and went with the 5-item deal for about $9+tax: three no filling (refer not taking advantage of the filling options) , a Nutella, and a cookies and cream. The best way to enjoy them is definitely right after being serviced because the exterior crispness and the soft and chewy center is the best texture. I am a fan of taiyaki's and plan to try more flavors and their ice cream soon. read more

NOM NOM! I now understand why there's always a line. The ice cream is creamy and the flavors are on point. I could eat a pint of Ube by myself. I did the milk and Ube swirl since my bestie said that is her favorite flavor. It was good too. I was expecting fishy to be sweet like usual waffle cones, but it wasn't. Which was a nice balance with the ice cream and filling. Totally coming back to try more flavors or just more Ube who knows. read more

I had heard of SomiSomi opening a shop in the Bay Area, however I have not been courageous enough to brave what I had heard were long lines. On a recent trip to SoCal, I happened to stumble upon this location in Irvine(on Alton Parkway). There are a plethora of restaurants and other eateries in this relatively large strip mall, so even if you don't come here for this dessert shop, you may be able to find another more suitable option for you. Fortunately on this blustery November Saturday evening, there was a minimal line ahead of me. I went with the black sesame soft serve with the custard filling in a taiyaki. Within 10 mins, my pretty looking dessert had disappeared. The black sesame had a rich nutty taste and the soft serve was perfectly creamy. The taiyaki, I believe made with mochi, was chewy and tender. I have since visited my local SomiSomi in Cupertino a few times since my visit to this location in Irvine, and I have to say, I will be a future repeat customer for quite some time. read more

Located in the ever so busy Diamond Jamboree center... conveniently next to 85 Degrees. Parking is a pain during nights and weekends. Luckily, I've always visited SomiSomi when the lines aren't out the door. Service is always good and they are fast with your order. You can sample their swirl combinations before making your pick. The swirl combinations change occasionally. They make the taiyaki fresh and the smell is just so inviting, you can't NOT get it. My favorite swirls are the UBE & SESAME and their MATCHA & MILK. Their soft serve is really soft and creamy and surprisingly not overly sweet. The "Ah-Boong" (goldfish waffle cone) is delish. You have an option to either have it in a cup, upside down with ice cream in a cup and Ah-Boong on top, or the regular way, with ice cream on the Ah-Boong (a little too messy IMO, but if you're a fast eater... you'll be fine). You can pick a filling for your taiyaki (taro, red bean, Nutella, and custard - my personal favorites are the taro & custard). You can add toppings (no charge) when you pick up your order. BUT! I love getting their taiyaki with no ice cream. You can get it with any filling inside, the red bean one is good... but I love getting it with CHEDDAR. It's like a grilled cheese on a brioche bun. We normally get the milk and matcha flavor, but this week it wasn't on their menu. However, the milk & ube is a great option as well. I really enjoy the creamy flavor of the milk soft serve. Brought the kids here and was a big hit! The ordering was super easy on the iPad! Made selection process super easy and more fun then looking at a large menu item with a blank stare. The workers were super nice and it was fun to watch them prepare it and add toppings. They have several cereal topping to choose from and either a strawberry or small macaroon to add on the soft serve. Great idea and the Taiyakis were a big hit as well. I love Somisomi and I wish there was one closer to where I live (Seattle). Alas, I only get to have one of these when I visit family in California. This location is busy but quick. The staff here is friendly and store is clean. There was a crowd outside and a smaller crowd inside. But once we got to the front, it was mere moments until my name was called to pick up our order. The fish are freshly made, soft and slightly crunchy. You can choose from a variety of fillings but I always choose custard. I had the seasonal special of ube and cookie butter. I didn't taste the cookie butter but that's fine by me because I love their ube flavor. And how can you go wrong with Fruity Pebbles and Captain Crunch toppings? Highly recommend. All I can say is wow! What a brilliant idea. Combining taiyaki with that crispy dough and flavorful filling with creamy soft serve ice cream. A combination for the gods! The soft serve here is amazing, rich and creamy with a bunch of unique flavors available. You have multiple options for fillings in the taiyaki but I always go with custard. Very fast service! SomiSomi is one of my favorite frozen yogurt places since discovering it a few months ago. The soft serve is extremely soft and creamy, full of flavor, and the waits at any of the locations (this is the third I've been to) is always minimal, even with long lines. Staff is friendly, this location is no different, and this spot even had an iPad to order yourself. Ordering "upside down" gives you the fish shaped waffle, with your choice of filling, stuck on top of your soft serve in a cup, rather than using the waffle as a normal cone and being filled up with soft serve and holding it. Much easier to eat if you get it upside down. The only downside is topping are minimal, usually just a light dusting of something, as opposed to other soft serve spots where you can have a huge variety of toppings. Also, the flavor swirls change often, sometimes leading to being unable to get your favorites swirled together. read more

This location is normally really good but for some reason recently it's gone down. We went today and our taiyaki was completely raw and undercooked, I overheard some customers telling the staff the same thing. Staff also all disappeared to the back for a little and no one was out front helping or doing orders. Not sure what's been happening but make sure your taiyaki isn't raw! read more

I tried the ice cream in a fish cone and tried the filled fish as well. Both were delicious. Price is average for a trendy dessert spot. This place gets busy. The guy who took my order was not the friendliest. This is probably the only compliant. The place is very noce and clean. You can view the staff making everything in front of you. The chocolate ice cream was very creamy and tasty, very sweet. The fish cone was delicious however you need to eat it rather quickly as it starts to melt and get all over the place. read more

Tablet was barely working. Took 5 seconds to process a single touch input. Once we got the ice cream we were told to wait for the taiyaki and it seems like there was a mixup with the orders or they were just too busy. Ice cream was melted and overflowed the cup by the time they were done. Made a huge mess because we were waiting with the cups to take it to go. Once we ended up trying the ice cream, it was okay. Would rather go somewhere else for ice cream specifically. The taiyaki is better but for the amount of time needed to get parking here, the frustration with the ordering interface, and the slow service, probably worth going to a different location even if it's a bit further. Plus the taiyaki appears to not completely be done. Was undercooked. Probably won't be going to DJ specifically for the Somi Somi again but maybe we'll revisit if it's not as slow/crowded while in the area. read more

My second love. All the dessert places around PHX that try to recreate the fish cake dessert and swirl just can't compete- their ice cream swirl doesn't have as much flavor or the fish cake isn't crispy. We got one mixed swirl ube-matcha with taro filling. This combo was too many competing flavors with the taro but otherwise great flavors! We did self check out- smooth process. read more

Fresh fish-shaped pastry paired with a delicious swirl of soft serve, what's not to love? You'll want to eat this quickly though... the warm taiyaki melts the dessert soon after you get it, and it can turn into a mess real fast. The dessert shop is situated between 85 Degrees and Tim Ho Wan at Diamond Jamboree Shopping Center. Parking out front is a little crazy sometimes, but getting a spot isn't too hard because cars are always going in and out. There's also a structure in the back if you're having trouble. Step 1: Pick a style. The most popular option is having the taiyaki served as a cone with the soft serve inside, but that was unavailable when I went recently. For now, you can get soft serve in a cup with the taiyaki upside down on top or just the soft serve. You can even just get the taiyaki by itself with your filling of choice. Step 2: Choose your soft serve flavor. They have six main flavors and three swirls (mix of two flavors) that change weekly. The original milk one has lactose, and the sesame contains peanuts. Step 3: Choose your filling! Traditional red bean, chocolatey Nutella, sweet taro, and creamy custard. If you're just getting the taiyaki, you can get cheddar and red bean/cream cheese as well. Soon after ordering, someone will call out your name by the counter on the other side. There's a variety of toppings available that you can add. No indoor tables unfortunately, you will have to find a place to sit elsewhere. A very fun and creative treat! read more

This is such a classic spot to go to after eating at BCD or any local restaurant in the Diamond Jamboree lot. Line looks like but moves really fast. The only thing that takes time is the making of the taiyaki packs (5 flavors). I recommend doing the Oreos, they're double stuffed and taste delicious in this form. Swirl flavors vary per week! The only area of improvement would be their self order kiosks are so slow and the touch screen delays actually hold up the line more than you ordering directly with someone at the register. Came here after a ramen dinner and a movie with my partner, we wanted to celebrate me passing boards so the occasion called for a sweet treat. Total: ~$11 Service: Great! Fast and not a long line either, we went around 7pm on a Tuesday. The verdict: We are now both going to seek counseling to get over our new found obsession of SomiSomi. Send help. IT IS SO GOOD. You have to go there, to be honest, I think MY order (black sesame with nutella filling) was the winner by far, but hey, some people love that bitter taste of matcha, to each their own. I cannot wait for another occasion to go back. Soft serve is the name of the game here. Which I've reviewed before. But today, the highlted menu item is their Taiyaki. The fish shaped pastry with savory/sweet fillings is definitely the underdog menu item. Taiyaki is a popular warm street snack. The hot center and crispy pastry is a easy snack to handle and fun to eat. Originally, I wanted to grab Pandan waffles but these gave way better results for satisfying my carb cravings than I expected. They have great flavors and the taiyaki tastes a bit chewy like mochi. They have 2 pack for 4.26 and 5 pack for 7.59. Flavors include: Custard Cheese Red bean Nutella Taro My favorite are Nutella & custard! It was so good I went back for a five pack. Order on the left at the register. Then they will call your name when your order is ready and you line up on the right to pick up your order. It got really busy on a Thursday night so they began giving out buzzers. All masks mandated indoors for service. Glad that's still in effect to protect employees. Parking is notoriously messy at this location due to the numerous restaurants in the plaza. Pro tip: there is a multi-level parking structure in the back for stress free parking. I Love coming to this place. I originally started going to the one in San Diego and I am so glad they have one in Irvine, where I just moved. There was a little bit of a line, but don't let it for you, it goes by really fast as long as people before you are not taking forever. You order at the front and you get your ice cream on the side where they ask you if you want extra toppings on the side. So good! I love the rotating flavors when they combine them. read more

Amazing flavors! I had the matcha and pink guava swirled together it was better than I expected! Inside my fish was Nutella can't ever go wrong with that. I can't wait to come back and try one with custard inside the line went by so fast, and they prepared mine in less than 5 minutes :) you can only use card which makes it very convenient and faster lines.. cute little space to grab a late night sweet tooth craving and hangout with friends..... or your dog, like me I'll definitely be coming back for more I love this place. 10/10 read more

I've always walked by this place whenever I'm dining in the Diamond Jamboree plaza. It almost always has a long time spilling out of the shop, which told me that it was gaining more traction than the competitor in the same plaza. (Granted Afters is a different concept but they both do frozen treats.) My friend wanted to catch up last night and asked if I had any recommendations for late night dessert places. I remembered this one and we met up around 8:45 PM. Parking is always hit or miss in this plaza. I prefer the structure because you usually will find a spot there. The staff works quickly once orders are keyed in and everyone working there seemed to be in good spirits that night. I went with the black sesame soft serve in a cup and my friend did ube in a cup. The nice thing is, most of their soft serve is lactose free, save for the milk flavor. Texture is smooth and seems to hold the swirl shape pretty well. Very good black sesame flavor that is balanced and not watered down or too potent. I'd love to try their matcha someday. read more

Over the past few years though, it seems like the recipe or preparation has changed. Since around 2022, the soft serve felt more diluted, with a lighter and airier texture. It's still enjoyable, but it doesn't have the same dense, creamy consistency that I remember, especially during the height of the pandemic when it seemed to be at its best. That said, the Darling is still a classic menu item, and the honey flavor remains unique. I keep coming back partly out of nostalgia and partly because there still aren't many places that offer quite the same combination. I just miss the richer, creamier version that it initially had and hope that the recipe will change for the better.

The staff is always super nice, and super patient with all the sample requests lol The only downfall being that the plaza it's in gets pretty busy and the parking can get tricky and the actual interior is pretty small so the line is consistently out the door. There is outdoor seating immediately outside, which is nice so you can sit down to enjoy your ice cream!

However, I was still more than happy to check them out when my gf suggested coming here. All of their hype and praise was certainly a big reason why, as well as me wanting to see what Persian ice cream tastes like, but, quite simply, how could I ever say "no" to trying a new ice cream shop? Especially to cap off such a warm evening out! While I can't say how this location compares to their spot in LA, I liked how low-key and unassuming this place felt. Past the counter/register, there's a small amount of seating to the back, but there's also a bunch of seats and tables right out in front. More importantly, though, their display case of ice cream is chock full of enticing options. Inspired by ingredients and flavors from around the world, Saffron Rose's roster of flavors is quite diverse. What's more, from their Mango and French Espresso to their Saffron & Pistachio and Passionfruit, they all looked equal parts unique and delicious! -- FRENCH ESPRESSO While it may not have been quite as amazing as I had hoped, this was still pretty good. Although I wish the taste of the espresso had been more robust, it still had a decent coffee flavor to it that I really liked. -- PASSIONFRUIT I got this mostly because I wanted something a bit tart and citric to balance the French Espresso and it did the trick. The passionfruit was refreshing and I liked that the taste of it wasn't overly acidic. -- SAFFRON WITH PISTACHIO Presumably their namesake flavor? Either way, this may not have been my favorite flavor, but it wasn't bad. The taste of saffron was decently strong and I liked how the pistachios in this added some texture. -- MANGO Of all of the flavors I've tried, this is easily my favorite. Not only did it feel rather refreshing (especially on such a warm night), but it also had a surprisingly strong taste of mango to it. -- POMEGRANATE Unfortunately, this was pretty disappointing. Much like when I got the passionfruit flavor, I wanted something fruity and light to offset the pistachio, but this was a little bit sharp and acidic for my liking. -- GREEN PISTACHIO I love pistachios, so I had some high hopes for this one, but it missed the mark for me. For whatever reason, the taste of pistachios didn't come across as well as it did with the other flavors and the chunks of pistachios felt surprisingly soft. -- PINK ROSE My least favorite of the bunch, but, to be fair, I'm also just not a fan of floral flavors and the rose water showed up most prominently in this one. Even though the first couple of bites were okay, the taste of the rose was too much for me after that. Regardless of the flavor, one thing I noticed about Saffron Rose's ice cream is that they're somewhat similar to gelato, but with a slightly gummier texture to them. What's more, all of the ice cream is made with rose water, which, as mentioned, I'm not a huge fan of, though it was pretty subtle in all of them except the Pink Rose. Also, I didn't care for the wafers they give you either. While I appreciate that they can complement the ice cream well (they resembled those classic cake ice cream cones), the wafers had more of a soft, semi-stale texture rather than a crisp one (unless that's they way they're supposed to be). All and all, considering how they're one of the only Persian ice cream joints around, Saffron Rose is by no means bad in any way. At the very least, their ice cream is certainly unique and even better than some of the gelatos I've had. However, as someone who prefers a more classic, creamy scoop of ice cream, I think Saffron Rose is just okay. My gf, on the other hand, is definitely a fan, so I'm sure more scoops of their Mango and French Espresso will be in my future the next time we visit when we're back in town again! THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

But that is part of a customer oriented store. It is also pet friendly! So come when you want to be treated right, take your time and enjoy unique flavors for something out of the ordinary or enjoy a flavor you're more familiar with. Either way you won't be disappointed.

I grew up with making an "ice cream" sandwich by putting ice cream in a pandesal and tasting this just unleashed a core memory of being young and making an ice cream sandwich that way. We will definitely be back to try the other flavors! When we arrived there was a few people in line and when the line grew a bit, I think it was a manager that stopped what he was doing to jump in and help with customers which I thought was very considerate of him to do. Lastly, the location was charming and tucked away in the corner of the plaza. It had a few tables outside and in the adjacent Pop Pie shop to sit for a few minutes to enjoy the ice cream!
