While waiting for my husband's cappuccino, I perused the aisles and found that they carry Maison Bordier butter!! I was so excited I ended up buying a couple of blocks. Now on Saturday & Sunday, one of the family tends a taco stand just outside on 23rd street side, offering freshly grilled chicken, beef & pork chunks in tacos with their own fresh salsa for $3.00. Quesadillas are $8.00. Both excellent. They also offer fresh Mexican horchata, watermelon juice, and pineapple for $3.00. Can even sit at a table to eat onsite.

The Lonely Planets Cities books lists NYC as the second greatest city behind Paris & San Francisco is number seven I believe behind Istanbul. NY & SF are the only two cities in the top ten cities on planet Earth. I think Los Angeles or Chicago is around 40 something on the list. I lived in the City of Angels more a bunch of suburbs spread out than a proper city like NY, SF, & Chicago. LA is car-city built around the freeway where gridlock traffic is a way of life unless you are taking the blue bus from Santa Monica to Venice. Not to hate on Los Angeles as that is where I developed a daily yoga practice in 2003. It where the Doors, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante, Black Flag, Henry Rollins, & countless other of my favorite musicians either lived or are from. I have family in Chicago & it is nicknamed second city after New York. It is a proper city. It has cold winters next to Lake Michigan yet in the warm months it is up there w/ NY & SF as top "city" in the US. Instead of giving an essay on the top cities or mass of suburbs in the US will keep it a bit one pointed...NOW.... It is easy to enjoy Whole Foods yet the Mission is known for the Mission burrito which is world famous. There are debates of who started it yet many places have great veggie burritos which I order gluten-free vegan w/ veggie burrito in a bowl packed w/ veggies w/ guac or avocado w/ mild salsa w/ corn tortillas on the side. I recommend El Farolito, Papalote, & Pancho Villa Taqueria to name a few for low key, affordable, filling & amazing veggie burritos complete w/ made in house salsa. If you are in the neighborhood & live here in the SF Bay Area or have a kitchen in your guesthouse visiting from out of state check out the Latino Market Casa Maria. They have all you could ever want for DIY burritos or Mexican cuisine at home. From local made fresh as you can imagine corn tortillas to the biggest flour tortillas to roll a king or queen size burrito. I recently picked up 10 limes for a dollar, some mangoes for smoothies at home, & more, You can use tomatoes, onions, limes, & fresh cilantro to make up your own salsa. Experiment! Support Whole Foods yet think outside the box to shift paradigms to support your local Latino Grocery Store.

The ambiance is cute very concrete and green; they make good use of the space. I do like that they did a pivot to groceries, but the reasoning we were told was due to consumer habits and people consuming less alcohol. I hope they also continue to consider the local Hispanic/Latino community that is the heart of why Mission is Mission and aim to be inclusive of that community that has historically been here. There is some peppers, onions, tomatoes, oil and things of that nature so that's definitely cool. They recently had a painter do signage, but it is currently completely in English. To me, it feels like a missed opportunity to put signage in Spanish for marketing purposes. Gemini sits on a corner so I think that would've been so cool of them if they decided to go the route of one side of the signage in English another in Spanish. Maybe they don't have Spanish speaking staff tho? Overall, love Gemini and they have a great selection of drinks and snacks and more. I will always be going there and it's worth checking out.

I opted for the Toulouse sandwich, which seemed to be a popular sandwich here. The sandwich was quite solid overall and filling enough. Imagine my surprise when I turn the package over and see that one serving is only 100 calories!! Cilantro Pesto- This spread is delicious!!! Cilantro and pesto flavors explode in your mouth and I love the spicy kick to it!

So this must be what it feels like to visit an Afghan bazaar-- aggressive and overly friendly…read morevendors talking fast and handing out samples faster. As you place your order, you get stuffed with more varieties of bolani and spreads that slide you into more add-ons and combination deals. Before you know it, you've blown $20 on bolani! I'd call it unethical if their food wasn't so darn tasty!!! Basic Bolani: Each bolani is a half moon of extremely thin dough engulfing a thin layer of filling. The samples are handed out cold and soft. When I buy a bolani, I prefer to put it through some time in the oven or toaster oven to achieve a slight crisp. Spinach Bolani: The spinach is bland by itself, but becomes magical when married with the outside dough. I guess I'll call it the "spanakopita" effect. Lentil Bolani: First time I had it the filling was too dry, but recently that changed. There are more lentils now. An extremely hardy bolani! Potato Bolani: I appreciate the potato as it is the world's favorite tuber. However, I found the filling bland and devoid of spices compared to other potato filled bread like Indian aloo paratha. I suppose a healthy dose of spicy topping solves that issue though. Pumpkin Bolani: I really couldn't get into this one. It wasn't sweet like a pumpkin pie or anything, but still not a savory enough filling for my tastes. Garlic Mint Cheese: This would make a stale pita taste awesome so it is really dangerous when paired with a great bolani! It's not really cheese, but more of a thick yogurt sauce that is very heavy on the garlic. It's similar to tzatziki minus the dill and cucumber. Cilantro Pesto: It was like a thicker and less potent version of the green chutney found at Indian restaurants. I'm a fan of cilantro, but still found too much of this put me on overload. Best to use sparingly. Sun-dried Tomato Pesto: I'm not an expert on Afghani food, but somehow I suspect this is not terribly authentic. It is nice though, similar to an Italian style sun-dried tomato spread. Sweet & Sour Jalapeño Jelly: I couldn't help think that this was a less spicy Thai chili sauce. It may be good for egg rolls, but I'm not a fan of it on my bolani.
