So glad we stopped here for lunch! When we first arrived in Julian for a long weekend getaway my boyfriend immediately noticed the "Soups and Such Cafe" and was immediately intrigued. We looked into going there for dinner the first night we arrived but they close at 3pm. On our last day in Julian we stopped here for lunch before heading out. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a super nice lady who gave us a menu and said, "let me know if you want to stay." After answering our many questions (I'm currently on a weird diet) we decided to stay and I'm so glad we did! I ordered the half sandwich (veggie), cup of soup (farm green), and the side salad with avocado with the shallot vinaigrette dressing. Everything was SUPER fresh and homemade and had an amazing flavor. I could eat the soup for days, it was so good and was packed with veggies. Everything had an amazing flavor and o was totally satisfied upon scarfing down my whole meal. The only thing is I wish the veggie sandwich had more veggies on it like red onion and cucumber. That would be really good! We also ordered a pot of the Russian Caravan black tea and I also got the passion iced tea. Their teas are amazing! You can tell it's fresh and their machines are clean because the tea is clear and crisp. The Russian caravan tea was loose leaf served in a cute pot. It was really good; I have never had Russian Caravan tea before so this was a pleasant first experience. Service was impeccable and our server was SUPER friendly; arguably one of the friendliest servers I have ever had. Smoked brisket "burger" was subpar because meat had an artificial smoke flavor & I don't think it came from a slab of smoked brisket. Tasted like thinly sliced beef cooked on a flat range top slathered with-over-the counter BBQ sauce. Sweet potato fries: crispy & delicious. Can't go wrong with previously frozen(?) fries, re-fried. I would order it again. French onion soup: pass! It đidn't have that umami essence that is released when onions are rendered & slowly cooked over low heat. There was a small slice of soggy bread but I don't think it was toasted prior to topping the soup with cheese. Yes, the crouton should soak up the soup but in my opinion, the texture will be different when the crouton is perfectly toasted. House salad: no complaints here! Thai chicken soup was incredible, I will be back for that alone. We also had the salmon burger, club sandwich, tuna curry sandwich, burger, and fried chicken burger and they were all delicious. The salmon burger stood out the most--it's an actual whole filet of salmon, not a ground burger, so the fish was very high quality. Cute little restaurant in the historic Main Street of Julian. Food is American Diner style - soups, salads, burgers, etc. Staff is incredible - really hustles when the place gets packed on the weekend with all the San Diegans running for the hills. My friend raved about the hamburger - but I got the Turkey burger and it was dry. But that's ground turkey for ya - you got to mix it with things to make it palatable. Stopped in after a hike when the wait was too long at another, more visible restaurant. So happy I stumbled on it. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. I had the half sandwich and cup of soup. Super slow service (on a Wednesday, not a weekend). OK, we like country places not a big deal if the food is good once you get it. Sometimes they just don't have enough help. But the "deli" sandwich was barely mediocre. Dry as a bone. Super thin sliced turkey and ham, and not much of it. Slice of lettuce and tomato, not much. No rye bread. For deli sandwiches there is no rye? Condiments on a tray including mayonnaise. The only mustard was Frenches yellow, no Dijon. No Dill pickle on the side. Even the water was awful. Doesn't everyone in Cali filter everything out at the tap? Just a completely mediocre experience top to bottom. We finally had to go up to the front counter to pay the bill since after she served us she never came back by again. read more

I ordered the pick 2: Thai Chicken Soup and Curry Tuna Sandwich. The Thai chicken soup definitely has a kick to it. The curry tuna was sweet and both were perfectly flavored. Bbq brisket burger w/ a side of potato salad was also great! You get an option of French fries, potato fries or the potato salad. We were not disappointed with the potato salad. The bbq brisket gets messy, but it was very tender with a ton of bbq flavor! I also tried the corn chowder which was also good. I'd definitely come back when i'm back in town. What a wonderful find in Julian! Such a lovely place that feels cozy but yet roomy and clean inside! We had the soup and sandwich combo-- onion soup and curry tuna! So delicious--especially the French onion soup. It was served in an 8-ounce bowl; it was small but mighty. Actually the portion was perfect for both my husband and me. Amazing food! Consistent flavors. Free tastes. We tried pretty much every soup. Really enjoyed the harvest soup and the chicken Thai. Great flavor in every cup. Russian Caravan tea was also delicious. We had a grilled cheese and BLT. The fries were crispy and tasty with the large salt flakes. Would most definitely recommend. We slipped in before they closed and had a tasty, satisfying meal and outstanding, special service. I kept it simple with the Thai Coconut chicken soup and sweet potato fries. The soup was flavorful, being a somewhat Americanized version of an authentic Thai soup. It's very good, it's spicy and it seemed to be lighter, more of a lighter broth rather than the heavier creamy coconut milk of Thai restaurants. Still, I enjoyed it and I love Thai food. The soup and the salad come with delicious rolls....made in-house? I don't know but they tasted very homey. They were slightly crunchy on the outside, hot and soft inside and full of flavor. Hey, sounds lke my description of the sweet potato fries! I could have eaten a plateful! The sweet potato fries were perfect: very hot, very crispy on the outside and soft inside. My companion ordered the Greek salad which looked very fresh and inviting. She remarked that it has capers in it, something she usually does not encounter in this type of salad. She was great pleased with her choice. Our server was a delightful young college student who was highly attentive and helpful! When she arrived at our table with 2 small bowls of Thai soup, each on a different coloured plate, she asked if we had a colour preference. How cute was that? I got a tickle in my throat and she generously offered to provide me with a cup of hot water, fresh lemon and Honey along with a few words of wisdom as to why this would help. When she arrived with my special gift, she advised me on how much honey to put in my hot water. It was the sweetest gesture. I'm sorry I didn't get her name but I did get to chat with her before we left. She loves her town and her family and it comes through with her kind and generous spirit. I like this little restaurant! My husband and I came here two weeks ago and it was so wonderful. The service was really great and the food came out pretty fast. We both got the combos with soup, salad, and half a sandwich and shared the fries. I got the green harvest soup, small house salad with the fresh shallot vinaigrette, and half of a classic BLT sandwich. My husband got the corn chowder, Caesar salad, half of the veggie sandwich.
