My wife and I just came home from a terrible dinner at Southbound. One would think that when you spend $220 for a shared wedge salad, two mixed drinks and two entrees would be good. It was very substandard at best. My wife had a 5 oz piece of swordfish which since it was so small it should be perfect. Well, it appeared to have been cooked for someone else and was left to sit until someone else ordered it. It was very cold, at best room temperature. My veal rib should have been served warm, not cold, and a standard medium rare. This 5oz rib was covered in a 1/4" thick piece of cold gooey fat. The meat under the fat was heavily strung in cold fat and the meat was cooked too well done, but served cold. This standard procedure for reheating a veal rib is to place it in a 325 degree oven for ten minutes. But that was not an option because it was already overcooked. So I just shared with our waiter the above. I told him the only way to recover was to start over. I also shared that my wife's meal was also cold. He came back in less than five minutes. So the idea of doing the correct thing was not possible. Now upon returning to the table the 1/4" fat was gone and the meat was steaming. The remaining meat was like cardboard without any resemblance of what was advertised. The manager was more concerned with our payment than he was with our satisfaction. The decisions made by the manager reflect a restaurant which is operating too close to the line to be able to do away with poorly prepared food. My waiter apologized and told me he spoke with the manager who said he would address my concerns in a meeting tomorrow. So please, in the event you read this, avoid this restaurant until they adjust their less than Dennys quality food to less than Dennys quality prices. read more

I am always reticent about writing a negative review ; I much prefer to keep it positive and share mostly good experiences. However, in this case I feel it necessary to tell others about a terrible experience. Our last night in Charleston (we come frequently, at least twice per year; and mostly to try all of the exquisite dining that the city and surrounding areas have to offer) and we wanted to stay close to our rental-Southbound was right around the corner, so the convenience was great. Thats where the good ends. The staff is incredibly rude and aloof; this is the deep south, and if you don't have good staff, you don't have much at all. The servers and especially the hostesses could use a lesson from some of their counterparts in being kind and humble. (Fig for example lives absolutely up their acclaim and accolades, and their service was second to none). The menu looked good and had something for all tastes , however nothing that we ordered lived up to the standards you would expect based on their price point. The steak tartare was terrible it had no flavor, no seasoning, no acid, and most bizarre was that it was terribly cut and presented-the cuts on a tartare should be uniform; this was not-the cuts/sizes were all over the place. We didn't want to be rude and ask for salt but this needed it-and then some. It was served with mini chips but again, no flavor. My husband was convinced they were corn flakes because they were just bland. The Farro Risotto was passable; but the portion size was smaller than most appetizers at other restaurants . Don't get me wrong; we don't expect large portions in a fine dining establishment, but this was much smaller than it should have been for any entree in any restaurant. My husband ordered the NY Strip steak-$79 for an unseasoned, tough and not well rested steak. We normally would have no issue with the price point, if the steak had been edible but it was not. The potatoes it was served with were dull, no flavor, and I have to say my husbands take was they were no better than the instant potatoes his mother used to make. The prawns and grits were off putting-the grits are blue corn grits most likely, which I have had at other establishments; but these were unfortunately resembling wet cat food from a can, when paired with the sauce that it was served with. There were three prawns on the plate; that was it. The prawns were cooked well, but lacked seasoning. We try different restaurants and revisit our faves on every trip to Charleston, and this price point is not uncommon for the area and for the menu/style of food. But please spend your money elsewhere; this was not worth the time nor the money spent. We were seated at a table on the porch where my husband was literally hit in the back with the swinging and banging door when it opened and closed 100 times or so during our dinner.... Not exactly a quiet table but the worst I am sure in the restaurant. Thats so disappointing for spending over $400 for a dinner for 3. I would advise the manger or owner to perhaps lose that table; I realize that the more tables that you can have ,the more customers you can accommodate; but anyone sitting at that table is not going to have a good experience. Also want to mention is that when the waiter laid the tartare spoon on an oyster shell, I explained that my husband had a shellfish allergy, he seemed put out that he had to replace it. So not a good experience. BUT-the real reason that I am writing this review? My daughter got food poisoning! Within 30 minutes of arriving home, she was vomiting. the food was absolutely phenomenal and don't get me started on their amazing key lime pie. the chef talked me into it because i am very particular on key lime and it wasn't too tangy or too sweet. drinks were made great and the atmosphere was the best part. i recommend sitting at the chefs counter i was a little disappointed that was the only spot available but ended up loving the experience! the only thing i was disappointed about was we didn't get complimentary champagne like most guests did but maybe they thought we weren't of age to drink or if that was only for specified special occasions with reservations. regardless i have been telling everyone about this place since going! read more

This could be the best new restaurant in Charleston this year, located in a beautifully renovated house on Cannon Street, with a wood fired theme, and the service could not be beat! The food was just amazing and I could have honestly eaten anything on that menu; they even had seared fois gras on the menu, something you don't see very often, but is one of my absolute favorite indulgences. Our experience at Southbound was nothing short of amazing. We arrived about 30 mins early for our reservation so we were taken to the upstairs bar where the bartenders were very friendly and helpful with suggestions. Once our table was ready a hostess escorted us there to our porch swing seat. I highly recommend this seating option. It was so cozy and intimate. Temps were around 50 the night we were there but not once was I cold. Our food was phenomenal. We started with the beef tartare, my husband had the elk and I had the NY strip. We indulged in a bottle of wine our server, Michael, recommended and then we told him to surprise us with a dessert pick and the chestnut tart was amazingly good. It was such a small amount we couldn't believe it. And it was expensive!!!! And? It was not good. It looked liked they put mayonnaise in it. I hv yet to hv a good traditional steak tartare in this town. It ain't rocket science! If I you are ever in Manhattan, go to Joe Allen's in the theater district. They hv the best!. When the server asked how it was, we were honest and said it was disappointing. Now we both ordered two expensive main courses plus two sides that were expensive. After telling the server our opinion on the steak tartare? His attitude changed towards us and got nasty. We hardly saw him again. Our main course was just fair. She had the duck. Not good. Are here with my best buddy a few weeks ago. Place is dope, super authentic feeling atmosphere! Old Charleston home, table and seats as you approach in the piazza, tables tucked away, it's charming as hell, hip and romantic at the same time. Love the open kitchen and wood burning grill on full display. It's real deal y'all, you can feel the heat coming off it (I'm actually glad we didn't sit at this counter). I thought we were going to but then escorted upstairs and whisked away to this killer bar. If you can't tell I adore how they transformed this old home. Once seated at the bar we were warmly greeted and offered beverages. Service was spot on (sitting at a small bar usually guarantees this unless the bartender ain't worth a shit). Food was hit and miss but the dishes that hit were near perfection. Wins..... Foie Gras - supple, decadent, flipping fantastic, and the Scallop Crudo special, heal fresh, bright flavors and citrusy. We had the steak tartare as well to start, Ali though unique it fell a little flat. The smoked flavor was very very light, almost non existent and I felt it lacked a depth or punch that I'm used to with either an acidic bite or Dijon. For entree we split the big ribeye, it was well marbled, flavorful and cooked perfectly. The side of bbq marbled potatoes was no more than a 3/10, the sauce just wasn't good, kinda burned up sugar, plain and simple. We also had the peppers as a side and they were underwhelming but we ate em, not bad just not something I'd recommend. This place is so intentional and detail-oriented and really goes out of their way to make those celebrating a special occasion feel special. From the unique seating options to the excellent & attentive service to the cozy, charming space and AMAZING food, everything about this place was superb. Would also recommend the outdoor terrace, balcony or chef's table (probably my choice for our next visit). TL;DR: Highly highly recommend. A must do if within your budget. Atmosphere: Every detail has been thought out. They gave us each a glass of Prosecco and me a rose to celebrate our anniversary when we arrived. Then they give you a tour through the restaurant and past the open fire kitchen. We sat at the porch swing table which had a little lamp so you can see as it darkens, a blanket if you get cold, a fan of you get hot, and a pillow for back support. Then the dishes are all hand made pottery. The silverware is positioned on a shell to keep it off the table. The drink menu is in a small book they call the drink Bible as an homage to the many churches in Charleston. The regular menu rotates daily. The bill comes in a cute little box with a matchbox. They gave us a handwritten anniversary card and a small complimentary chocolate dipped cookie (think oreo) with the bill as well. Service Right away you are greeted by your maitre'd and hostess on the porch. The maitre'd found our reservation, engaged in a bit of small talk regarding our special occasion - anniversary - gave me a rose, and poured us a complimentary glass of Prosecco to celebrate the anniversary. Then our hostess guided us through the restaurant and tells us a bit about the history of the home-to-restaurant. You walk past the kitchen/grill which you can sit grill side if you desire. There also is table seating inside the restaurant with view of the grill. You can follow the stairs up to the bar if desired and there is additional seating. We had outdoor seating, so our hostess then continues on to the porch where there's regular tables and porch swing tables (no the swings don't swing, but still cute seating). There is patio seating as well. After the hostess seats us, we are swiftly met by our waiter Joseph. Joseph was conversational, well versed on the menu and his recommendations were spot on. My husband was trying to decide the NY strip and the ribeye and Joseph wisely asked how he prefers his meat because his recommendation would depend on medium vs medium rare. He also gave us some recommendations of things to do in Charleston since this is our first time visiting. Joseph was attentive to our drinks, to clearing dishes quickly, and also provided a nice balance between conversation with us and time for personal conversation as well. Other staff members were also checking on us as they were walking by and making sure everything was to our liking. The only area of improvement (in my opinion at least) is the pricing is not posted daily on their social with the daily menu, only on the menu when you get there. For reference, as of November 24, 2023: appetizers were around $20. Entrees were between $40-60. Sides were approximately $12. Cocktails are about $17. They also have desserts, beer, wine, and mocktails available but we didn't look at those prices since we didn't order any of those. I'll start by saying I've dined at Community Table as well as Kiki and Rye before it shifted to Bar Pizza and haven't always been impressed, so I wasn't sure how much to expect from a new sister restaurant. My worries were unwarranted as this has easily been the best dining experience I've had in Charleston. We celebrated my birthday as well as my sister's birthday together here. They greeted us at the door with bubbles and a rose. The gentleman at the door also proceeded to help my grandmother out of the car in the rain and escorted her to our table!! First visit to this location. The building is beautiful. It's an old converted Charleston home & the wood fire kitchen greets you as you enter. The design of the location is on point. The service there is excellent. The wait staff are great & helpful. The food is very good. I had a steak & my wife had the duck. For appetizers we did the bay scallops & crab cake. Both were very good. If I have a gripe, it's the price points. I felt the bill was $50-$100 more than what it really should've been for the fare. Also the $11 CC fee was preposterous. The portion to price ratio felt off. The previous night we ate at La Chev 208, had the same amount of drinks, appetizers, diners & desserts & that bill was about half of what Southbound was with fare on the same par. My conclusion is, this is a one & done or special occasion place. I feel there are restaurants in the area more reasonably priced with great atmosphere & food. It was an absolute treat to have eaten at Southbound! The host and hostess were super friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We had reservations but the party at our table was a little slow to leave. The host was very good about keeping us informed of how much longer it might be and even allowed us to get drinks while we waited on the porch. Once you enter the restaurant you are greeted by a bar with a large open flame fireplace, that I assume they are cooking on. (Definitely going to request the bar seats next time.) Our table was located upstairs where a beautiful staircase transports you to another seating are with a bar. The place is quaint but never did we feel squished or overcrowded. We had the Burrata, Steak Tartare, and the Bone Marrow. My favorite and a menu staple, was the Steak Tartare. My entree was the Double Cut Elk Chop, but sampled the Dry Aged Strip. Going back I'd likely get the New York Strip, the flavor profile was glorious! For desert we went with the s'mores and the banana pudding. I invited my friend to choose a restaurant to celebrate her birthday and she selected Southbound. All reviews and the website promised a quite an experience and it was sub par, at best. The restaurant knew of my friend's birthday because I had emailed and left a voicemail requesting a special something to mark her celebration. The hostess was very casual "whose birthday is it? do you want some champagne" Ew. Most places will either have the champagne or Prosecco waiting for you or bring it over complimentary once you've been seated. We were handed a shot glass of Publix level something in a champagne glass. The waiter was fine but busy. My friend ordered the swordfish smothered in chimichurri sauce. She seemed to enjoy it although I found it quite sloppy in presentation. I ordered the $72 NY strip that was the worst piece of steak I have ever had in a restaurant. At that price and in a venue that promotes itself as upscale, seriously disappointing. It was grisly and while it had the taste of 'fire' from their open grill cooking, it was not good. The accompanying 15 kernels of corn in a sauce were good but anemic in portion. Best parts of the meal were the appetizers: crab cake was full and meaty, and the overpriced watermelon/cucumber/feta was refreshing on this hot Charleston evening. Dessert was Chocolate Pot du Creme and the Strawberries and Cream, both of were delicious. Cocktails were good although I found the espresso martini too harsh compared to others I have had. In all, I spent just under $500 for two people and experienced mediocre food, relentless fly swatting, and waving down our servers. To boot, the other half of my steak was never wrapped up to take home. Yes, it was bad but for $72... There are many other options in Charleston to spend your money. Sadly, this one really missed the mark and I will not be returning. read more

Additionally, food is solid -- we had the steak tartar, beets appetizer (loved), duck entree, squash, and banana pudding along with some fantastic cocktails (highly recommend the gin drinks) Service and waiter were also great. The Bad: Price -- knocked one star off for this. $48 for a duck entree with no sides and a small portion on top of that, seems too much. If sides were included, maybe...but this seemed to be the case for a lot of the dishes. I've always enjoyed the ambiance of houses that are converted into restaurants and this one is amazing. You can show upup casually dressed, but the ambiance will compliment a perfect date night. Service and staff were exquisite and very accommodating; rushed in to make things right when things went sideways. What went wrong: We were a table of 4 on a very busy Sunday. Check in was quick and we were seated upstairs (inside) with reservations; Food came out rather slow and when it did arrive, my friend's food was #1 overcooked Veil Chop and #2 ''cold'' Fish dish ($52). Mine was fine temp wise but the fish was a bit tough ($52). My wife's duck was fine ($38). Sides, we ordered 3 for the table were very good. Dessert was a bit disappointing. $10 for essentially lime-flavored whipped cream. The best dish was the Octopus ($20) which was very tender and done to perfection. However, that being our total bill for the table was $400. Our half was $200 and at that cost it was not worth the money. Having only ONE small-plate dish out of the whole evening of 3 sides, 2 entrées (mediocre at best) and a very disappointing dessert... well enough said. Overcrowded, with departing diners and waiters passing back and forth in front of the "porch swing" tables. there was also a deceptive and meager menu: Crab cakes (plural) should have been listed as "Crabcake". The dessert of this three-course pre-fixe menu that I chose was strawberries and cream. Technically correct, in that there were two strawberries halved. $85 per person was absurd unless you guzzled all the Bloodies or rose one could drink. In and out in a record one hour. Makes me question a return for a dinner; certainly never again for brunch. read more

heard great things about southbound so i came with high expectations and it certainly lived up to the hype! the restaurant is beautiful--a small home turned dining area with an open kitchen and gorgeous fixtures which makes for an intimate and unforgettable dining experience. the menu is small with moderately high prices and the portions are on the smaller side which together are all usually great signs that the dishes have been carefully curated as a labor of love. each menu item has unique twists, you can tell the chef has a creative passion for food. we ordered two starters two entrees and one side between two people and left perfectly full and finished all of our food, i find this to be ideal because i don't want to take home leftovers. our server whit was very charming and kind and added to the experience. a great server turns any old dinner into a full experience and im extremely grateful we got to meet him!! he made great suggestions and i overheard him being very helpful to the nearby tables as well. at one point my moms ring popped off and he spent a good bit of time looking around for it. he definitely went over and above. off of first impressions i think anyone who has whit in their lives is very fortunate to know him. id recommend southbound to anyone who is willing to spend a little extra money to have a really beautiful night. we expected the bill to be $300+ but it came to about $230 which isn't really that much more than other comparable charleston restaurants and you defffffinitely get what you pay for!! if you see this, tell whit he is appreciated read more

We went for our third year anniversary and it was amazing! It was our first time going there and we had great service even before we sat down to our seats. Once we sat down at the chiefs counter the atmosphere felt like I was sitting in my great grandmas kitchen watching her cook on her fire stove. It was great watching the chiefs prepare all of the food. The food was on a different level with its flavors and how everything was cooked perfectly. I would highly recommend going.
