I legit cannot remember how I found this place on Yelp - but I did and I am so glad I did. We came on a Sunday afternoon for brunch, and while it wasn't super busy, it was busy enough for a small line at the register. We found an empty table to wait for our food order while debating whether or not to order some desserts, too. I ordered the shrimp and grits, which were delicious. I added bacon, which seemed unnecessary at the time, but once they were in my mouth, they were VERY necessary. And the price is super reasonable! Better than the other bougie brunch places in Atlanta, in terms of getting the best bang for your buck. I also got to try the French toast casserole, which was bomb. Reminded me of bread pudding, which happens to be one of my favorite desserts. It's a lot to eat as a single person's meal, but it's definitely great to share. I've frequented Southern Sweets a few times over the years. They make the BEST coconut cake...(on par with my gramma's). I've tried slices of their other cakes too, but never their pies. Southern Sweets Bakery has been open since 1992. It offers desserts, sandwiches, salad, soups, hotdogs and wraps. But my purpose for the visit was to try their vegan desserts. In my experience, if a restaurant or bakery has mastered vegan desserts, all the rest is premium. The bakery is located in Decatur near the Dekalb Farmers Market and the parking is free. The outside appearance is modest, but the inside is nice and cozy. There were a few people inside on their laptops drinking coffee and/or having breakfast. It was quiet so it could be a great spot to read. There was a sign in the middle of the floor advertising a Super Bowl Party Pack on one side and the other side shared their social media communities (IG, FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Google and Trip Advisor) as well as website www.southernsweets.com I was told the most popular dessert is the Vegan Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake. The Little Havana Cuban, Chicken Salad and Tuna Melt are the most popular sandwiches. They offer a kids menu, lunch specials and a Dessert of the Month Club. I ordered the following desserts: (total cost $25.70) 1. Vegan strawberry cake - the cake was surprisingly moist, with strawberries and cream between layers and vanilla icing. It was very good! The only thing I didn't like is the jellied glaze on the top which was pretty but not edible. 2. Vegan carrot cake - I took one bite and it was delicious! Moist and nutty with a hint if carrot. Just like I like it! You would never know it was vegan. 3. Vegan chocolate peanut butter mouse cake - haven't tasted yet 4. The decision is YES - whether for a quick lunch or breakfast (call ahead to order and eat outside or to go) or the BEST desserts in the Atlanta area. Many ATL & Decatur restaurants serve SS desserts - cakes, pies, cookies--the best. Also a great go to for holiday gatherings - but make your reservation for your pecan pie early! I've come here for years for food and I really hate that this last year has hit them, it seems, a little harder than other restaurants in the area. 30-45 minutes is entirely too long to wait for a BLT during non-peak hours. I'm really patient and understanding of all that's going on, but a slight bit of communication with customers would be helpful. I finally asked when my food would be ready (after 30 minutes), only to find out they gave my food to someone else and I was not told what happened. Decent bakery for cakes. The flavors of the cakes (I tried German chocolate, Boston cream, chocolate yellow cake, strawberries and cream) were all pretty good, clean, and not too sweet. The texture could use a lot more work, especially for the yellow cake which I was hoping would be more open and airy. Maybe I should have just heated the cakes up a little but they all felt dense, with the exception of the moist (not just from the strawberries) and airy strawberries and cream cake. I ordered a carrot cake on December 19 to bring for Christmas dinner at my son's home. (He is a 911 dispatcher who had to work on Christmas day, so we planned to celebrate on December 26.)   I received a confirmation text: "Your order ######## was confirmed and will be ready for pickup at 9:30 AM  (EST) on 12/26/2024."  When I got there the bakery was closed even though it is supposed to be open at 8 a.m.  I called twice leaving messages which were not returned.  8 hours later I receive this email with the heading "Sorry, your order ######## has been canceled."  The message says: "Hi Lyn, We appreciate your time placing an order with us. Unfortunately, we cannot take your order at this time. A refund will be issued to your card shortly."  No explanation why my confirmed order was canceled, and no apology!  They don't answer their phone either or return voice messages. I definitely will never again shop here (even though the vegan chocolate cake is to die for). read more

If you like cakes, look no further. Southern Sweets Bakery bakes some of the greatest cakes Atlanta has ever seen. Cakes aren't this business's only specialty, though, as they have a pretty decent lunch menu too. Southern Sweets' cafe is open every day from 11am to 5pm. Southern Sweets is located very close to Your Dekalb Farmers Market, off Laredo Drive. The cafe is small and casual. It's decorated much like someone's house with old-school black and white checkerboard tile flooring and homely artwork and decor on the walls. Seating is limited to a handful of small black wrought-iron cafe-style tables and chairs (the kind you typically find outdoors). The cakes and desserts are on display inside glass cases towards the back of the space. Behind the register is a giant, beautifully painted Southern Sweets curtain. Southern Sweets' lunch menu contains about 20 different sandwiches and wraps, a half dozen salads, and some soups. Everything is homemade including the salad dressings. Sandwiches and wraps are offered in a variety of breads including multigrain, marble rye, country white, Ciabatta, and spinach wrap. Whole sandwiches and salads will set you back about $9-10 each. You can also get various combos (e.g. half sandwich + soup) for $9.20 each. The sandwiches are regular size. The bakery's most popular sandwich is the "Grown Up Grilled Cheese" sandwich. These are $8 each and you get your choice of two cheeses: cheddar, fresh mozzarella, Swiss, Provolone, smoked Gouda, pepper jack, or white American. You can also add fresh greens (lettuce) and tomatoes at no charge, plus grilled onion, homemade basil pesto, crispy bacon, and other meats at an additional cost. I really like the grilled cheese sandwich here and recommend getting smoked Gouda as one of the two cheeses (or the only cheese) you have prepared with your sandwich. The sandwiches are served hot from the kitchen and each bite produces long stringy bites of melted cheese. The Gouda has a unique sweet taste to it. I also like to add lettuce and tomato for extra flavor. As mentioned previously, the cakes at Southern Sweets are pretty dang good. They always have a sample of some cake next to the register. Be sure to try some! I've tried the following cakes: Carrot spice cake Chocolate red velvet cake Caramel cake Chunky apple spice pound cake Out of the few I've tried so far, my favorite is easily the caramel cake. I'm not a huge fan of caramel, but the caramel cake is just so smooth, creamy, and rich. It's delicious. My mouth waters just thinking about that fine, light brown caramel icing. The other cakes are great as well. Both the carrot spice cake and the chunky apple spice pound cake have, to me, larger-than-normal grates of carrots and apples. This gives these respective cakes extra texture. I also like how they have that extra spice to them. The chocolate red velvet cake -- in fact, all the cakes really -- are moist and not too dense. The cakes are prepared and baked well and it shows. I look forward to returning and trying different cakes. I also want to try some of their cookies. Service is excellent. The employees are very friendly. If ordering in, food is brought out in a reasonable amount of time to your table. The cafe can get a little busy during the weekend at lunchtime, but nothing too bad. After having first tried Southern Sweets many years ago, I have overlooked this out-of-the-way lunch spot too often. Which is my loss because it's a really good lunch spot. They also make some killer baked goods. In all, I've made four visits, maybe five. The tuna salad on marble rye - just about perfect. The definition a good home style sandwich, with excellent bread, crisp lettuce and tuna salad that puts most others to shame. If you like tuna salad, you'll like this. I think I was first drawn here by the muffuletta. Sadly, they don't offer this anymore but it was the best I've had. They should bring it back. Maybe I'll show up more often (not really - their other sandwiches are too good). Their signature grilled cheese is worthy of being signature. Given how you can option the sandwich, you could make it into a habit. Southern Sweets is a small space with six or seven 3-top iron tables, a four-top and one large group wood table. There are tables outside, too. Friendly, fast casual service. Order at the counter and they'll bring it to you. My impression over the years is that the people who work here are fairly dedicated to their craft. Perhaps sometimes that comes across as aloofness to the business of a restaurant (as opposed to a bakery) but I choose to see it in a positive light. I came here for dessert after a soulful vegan lunch with my lovely cousin. The location is a bit industrial and non descript compared to most bakeries but that's what makes it a charm. This place is more than a bakery, they have a plethora of cakes, both vegan and non vegan in addition to a full scale lunch menu with salads and sandwiches. I ordered the vegan carrot cake which was rather delightful with a real carrot and walnut flavor. The icing was like a whipped cream perfect on top. The slice was huge enough for two people to share and packaged in a to go box with a fork sitting inside which I find to be rather thoughtful. Finally, the customer service was fabulous simply because my cousin ordered the last vegan strawberry cake slice which was smaller compared to mine. So the cashier automatically discounted the price & I can't complain about saving a few dollars! This bakery gets my stamp of approval & I shall return. read more

SWEET & SAVORY I just landed at the Atlanta airport and was brought here by a friend. We were picking up some sweet treats for our upcoming event and we decide to grab some lunch. I checked out the menu and several items sounded delicious but I ultimately went with the Cuban sandwich. I know I'm in Atlanta and I should have searched out some fried chicken but this sounded so good to me. The sandwich is called the Little Havana Cuban. It is made with house baked ham and smoked pork tenderloin. I totally had to try that. Meats cured and smoked in house are always a favorite of mine. The Cubano was finished with Swiss cheese, shaved pickle, tomato, purple onion, mustard and a horse-radish sauce on a Baguette. I could have used some Cuban bread but we were in Atlanta and not Miami. The sandwich was perfect and I would totally order it again. I needed to transition from the savory to the sweet and could not resist the key lime pie. This is a bakery and I had to keep this southern Florida lunch theme going. It felt like I was eating in Southern Florida and not Atlanta. I would have not changed my selections at all. I enjoyed every single bite of both choices. One of the things I noticed while eating here was the constant stream of people coming in here. That's the sign of a good business. Some people were coming in for lunch and others were picking up desserts for parties or special events. This place is a local gem and their clients know the secrets of the tasty treats inside these delicious doors. That pie was literally the best thing I've had in a long long long time. Delicate crust, and the filling....No weak watery gelatinous mucky mess. Nope. Rich, amazing, firm goodness topped with chopped pecans and generously drizzled with dark chocolate. So so good. I'm literally overwhelmed with the flavors. This was my first pecan pie from here, and it's going to be hard to beat. Same for the Apple pie and any of their cakes. Southern Sweets bakery straight up has it going on. Our Key Lime Pie and Pecan Tart were the best addition to thanksgiving lunch. They were the absolute favorite of the whole meal. The pecan tart is thinner than a pie, as you might suspect, but it makes for an even better balance of pecans, crust and filling. You can eat a lot more without a tummy ache from all the sugar, and trust me, you'll want to! When picking up (without a called-in order), it was an breeze. They had 3 girls, masked up and ready to help. They made suggestions, handled online orders and made sure everyone was taken care of. I wish you could give half stars on Yelp.... I would really give this bakery a 4 1/2; however, they were very gracious and helpful when we needed a birthday cake last minute, thus the 5 star rating. Ordered the German chocolate cake, and although the cake part was not a true German chocolate cake (it was just a chocolate cake) it was a delicious, moist cake, unlike some bakeries where the cakes are dry or flavorless. I stopped in this past weekend. The facility is super cute! The bakery offers a good variety of beautifully made desserts and delicatessens. I tried the vegan strawberry cake and the peanutbutter pie atop of chocolate cake. I have a local bakery that makes what I consider the best strawberry cake ever, so I was really skeptical as to whether this cake could top that. The cashier was kind enough to let me sample it before buying. While it was really good, it was not what I would want to purchase - keep in mind I'm partial to one in particular. Thus, I went with the peanut butter. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever! The peanut butter pie cake is absolutely amazing! I love love love REAL peanut butter. I really enjoyed my trip here. The only reason it has four stars and not five is due to the inconsistency with the moisture of the cakes. To be clear, the options are the best I've had on this side of the metro region. The only place that compares (Alpine Bakery) is miles away. I'm EXTREMELY excited about the sweet potato praline cheesecake (I think I got a cavity simply from typing that name!). Recently purchased breakfast (eggs, bacon, grits and croissant) and a slice of caramel cake. Breakfast was great, but the giant cake slice was disappointing. The cake was dry and had no flavor whatsoever. Icing was also dry. Cake was obviously too old to be sold. I'd read prior reviews about dried out cake slices but wanted to try it anyway. Unfortunately, in this instance, the prior cake slice reviews were correct. Was really surprised at how tasteless the cake was. It's as if no butter or flavor was used. I also did not detect any hint that sugar was used. I've never tasted such a bland and flavorless cake. The cake slices are not cheap, so I probably won't be purchasing anymore cake slices. If you can get a fresh slice that tastes good, I'd say the price is reasonable. But expensive if you will only take a few bites and toss it in the trash because it's stale and tasteless. read more
