I love this place. It's a cute place. We got the chocolate ganache tart, pecan tart, key lime pie, and the rustic cherry pie. The rustic cherry pie and the pecan tart were good. The rustic cherry pie had the right amount of sweet and tart. However, the chocolate ganache tart was too sweet for me. What I ended up doing was combined the cherry pie with the ganache and OH MAN IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER. I turned it into a chocolate cherry pie tart. Frosting also tasted handmade, strawberry frosting kind of had an artificial taste to it (or maybe it was just really sweet), vanilla cake was delicious. KAHLUA/MOCHA CHEESECAKE - Yuuuum! The mocha melts in your mouth. Definitely a favorite. OREO CHEESECAKE - Pace yourself with this one. It was so good that I didn't realize I'd eaten it so quickly. I love sweet things. This was actually too sweet for my taste. I would come back and try the strawberries and cream layer cake, and the amaretto butter cake. I wish they had cookies. Service was friendly and attentive 4/5. I wish they had a 4 cake sampler for purchase. If they did, you'd be able to try flavors and see which one was your favorite. Then you could order a large piece of your favorite. No bakery is cutting edge. A friend of mine brought me a piece of their coconut cake a couple of months ago because she knew it was my favorite kind of cake. I have to say this is the best coconut cake I've ever eaten. It's very rich and the slices are big. Definitely half today and have tomorrow kind of slice. I went there today and got another piece of the coconut and also a piece of traditional chocolate cake. My wife had been talking about trying out this bakery ever since we moved here. She was excited when we were in the area and we stopped by. You will need maps to find the bakery as it is tucked behind what looks like somewhat of a warehouse district. Upon walking in I immediately loved the decor. Artwork all over the walls, a quaint but accommodating setting with outside seating available. We were greeted and advised to take our time as we glanced at the menu and all the desserts in the display cases. Plenty of lunch options (soups & salads & sandwiches) on the menu however the cakes, pies, and brownies were the star of the show. Excellent vegan and gf chocolate ganache tart. My partner got this for me for my birthday so that I wouldn't have to make my own birthday treat. I felt initially skeptical that it was truly gf and vegan because the presentation was so gorgeous ... and it tasted so good! The crust is a ground nut crust that the website describes as caramel nut. It has the slightest touch of cinnamon and the texture is crunchy and delicious. The ganache is smooth and dense, in the best way. This tart could feed a lot because a tiny sliver is all you need at one time. The tart did seem frozen when picked up, but we had time for it to thaw. Factor that into your plans if you're getting a whole one. She also got a slice of oreo cheesecake and ate the whole thing which tells me just how good it was! Dense-style, not light or fluffy (cheesecake people will understand). Went by the other day because I was told about what this place had to offer, so I decided to check it out. When entering the establishment, there were two ladies behind the counter and noticed I walked in and after I said "hello", there was no response( I was the only customer in the restaurant at the time). I walked up to the counter and looking at the menu for little less than a minute, I proceeded to tell one of the ladies what I would like to order. I finally received a response from one of them saying, " the only thing they had available was in the cooler". I asked could I not order from the menu and I was looked at "awkwardly" and was told no ( mind you this was 12:09pm in the afternoon). I figured they were not interested my business, so I turned around and walked out. I'm leaving this review not because of the quality of food or taste, but of the customer service. If I was told when walking up to the counter that the only thing that was available to purchase was in the cooler, I would've been happy to check to see if they had anything I would like to get from there. But instead, nothing was said to me, as I walked up to the counter, and after I looking at the menu then proceeded to place my order is when I was first spoken to. I've eaten from Southern Sweets Bakery many, many times, but had never been to its location until today. My friend and I had eaten lunch and had the desire for something sweet, he suggested Southern Sweets, and I was all in. Parking was easy on a Sunday afternoon, and while there were other patrons, it was fairly quiet in the bakery. My friend normally eats the vegan coconut cake but decided to try the regular coconut cake this time around. I had the lemon pound cake. The lemon pound cake was dense, rich and moist (sorry to the folks that this word grosses out!), but lacked the lemon flavor that I was looking for. The lemon was only present in the sugary icing on top of the cake. Because I'm more of a cake person than an icing person, I wasn't satisfied. (First world problems, I know.) First, I was turned off by the filthy condition of the sole restroom, and then I noticed that the restaurant's floors don't ever appear to have been cleaned. We recently had the 10" red velvet cake and it was absolutely divine. The BFF turned 40 and we couldn't celebrate without cake because what's a birthday without great cake, right? We were so pleased with the red velvet cake order. The cake smelled amazing coming out of the box. The decorative icing and accoutrements made me want to save the cake. The smell, however, fed the urge to cut and eat it, and I'm glad I did! The cake was moist and void of any flavors of imitation ingredients. Decided to stop by after Yelping "sweets" while in Decatur. This was a great find! We went for lunch - I had a fresh Cobb salad and husband had a fancy grilled cheese. No complaints on lunch, they were tasty and customer service was good. We sat outside during COVID times and enjoyed lunch. Later in the day we enjoyed our desserts at home. Some of the best cherry pie I have ever had and my husband said the lemon pound cake was the best he has ever had. Yummy desserts! I have been familiar with Southern Sweets from working in Downtown Decatur long ago. The restaurant I worked at purchased their desserts from here and to this day my favorite dessert is there Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake. A close second is their Caramel Cake. This last time I tried the Chocolate Ganache Tart and WOW! was it delicious! The desserts here are devastatingly good. Now as for their regular food, I am not a huge fan. I got the chicken salad and it just didn't taste that great to me. I have also tried the shrimp cake po boy and it tasted a little on the "straight of the freezer" side. Stopped in yesterday to pick up some sweets to go! They are located in an interesting spot a bit out of the way. There's a good bit of parking out front. We came in around noon on Sunday. There were a few people, but it wasn't packed. They served breakfast and lunch in addition to their large pastry cases. They have several cases filled with cakes, pies, tarts, cheesecake, you name it! So many delicious flavors to choose from too. We decided on the caramel cake and the tiramisu cake... although everything looked amazing! We almost got the Oreo cheesecake, but decided on the traditional cake. A reason to return! The slices are quite prices - a little over $6 a slice. But! They are very large slices! We each had half of each slice so we got to try both. Oh GOODNESS. This is some tasty cake. This place should be part of all food tours in Atlanta - tucked away between some commercial buildings, this unassuming location has been baking Atlanta's best cakes for decades now. If you had a pie in a steakhouse or in some vegan restaurants in the city, most likely came from here. Knowing that, do yourself a favor and come to the source for some delicious pies. They also have other items for breakfast and lunch. We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning. The line was constant during the coupe of hours that we spent there. We tried the lox bagel and 2 slices of pie, with coffee and tea. Everything was great, and service was courteous. Also, they are conveniently located across the street from the Your Dekalb Farmers Market, so you can hit both places in a single trip and stock up on deliciousness. So absolutely disappointed in the cake and a different cake slice I got. Not only are these totally different cakes from a few years ago, but they are horrible. They fell apart just touching them with the fork and the key lime had 3 layers, still small, and that layer was more than the actual cake layers.
