A quaint little spot, in a non-descript location, but well worth a stop if you're in the area. I haven't yet had the opportunity to actually try any "sweets" or baked goods, but the sandwiches are pretty tasty and I would expect that having "Sweets" in its name bodes well, even though they serve other fare. It's in close proximity to the DeKalb Farmer's Market and as such, everything seems very fresh and of high quality. It's a bit overpriced for my tastes, but considering the location and area demographics, it falls in line with its peers. The staff was very friendly and the seating area and tables were spotless. I stopped in for my regular Sunday treat of the vegan Old Fashioned Chocolate cake this morning and decided to try out the vegan pancakes. After watching orders come in after mine and waiting for 20 minutes, I was told by the manager that they didn't do refunds only credits. After insisting on a refund since I had no pancakes and just after the refund was processed and the pancakes arrived, the manager abruptly tells the server to take them back she's getting a refund. I didn't go in there for free pancakes but it sure would have been a nice gesture to give me the pancakes for my inconvenience. All it takes is one bad experience to lose a good customer. read more

When my family and I were in Atlanta a few weekends ago, we figured we ought to get some pecan pie. Unfortunately, a lot of places in and around downtown ATL were closing down for the day (this was later in the afternoon), but this place showed up on Yelp, and it also happened to be located on the way back to where we were staying. When we started pulling up to the place, we thought that perhaps Google Maps had led us astray, as the place appeared to be located in the middle of an industrial park, but lo and behold, the bakery was indeed located in the middle of it. Once inside, we saw that the place was pretty large and probably did a lot of baking for restaurants in the area. There were over a dozen different varieties of cakes and pies to choose from, either by the slice, or whole. The man in front of me told me that their cherry pie was to die for, so we ended up getting a slice of that, along with a slice of their orange blossom pound cake, and of course, a whole pecan pie. The pecan pie was as good as you would expect from a southern bakey, as was the orange blossom pound cake, but the true standout truly was the cherry pie. It wasn't overly sweet, and the cherries had just the right amount of tartness to them, which matched their sugary, buttery crusts. Just thinking about their cherry pie is making my mouth water. I'm pretty sure that you could pick almost anything from this place, and you would end up with a winner. They also appear to have some savory food items for breakfast and lunch, if you happened to be looking for something not sweet as well. I used to work at a restaurant that would order there cakes and I remember they were so delicious and VEGAN!!! not all of them but have great options. For my best friends birthday I decided to go to the bakery and order a cake. I came to pick it up a week later and was a little disappointed when I saw the writing. I did request this but I wish I would've gotten a call maybe suggesting something else because it doesn't fit on the cake. So be mindful of that when you order! I love this place!! A great hidden secret in Decatur, especially great for vegans. They have a huge vegan cake selection and offer slices as well as cakes. I've slowly made my way through the vegan cakes and I've only been disappointed by the caramel cake (it was dry). The rest of their cakes have been absolutely divine. One slice is HUGE and great to share for 2-3 people. It's worth the high price, trust me. My personal favorites: German Chocolate, Strawberry, and Coconut. Note - There are vegan options inside of the store that are not listed on their online menu. If you'd like to know beforehand, I'd give them a call. Or just stroll in and ask them to show you what is vegan since not everything is listed. You may find a treat that surprises you! The staff is very nice and always willing to help or answer any questions. It's best to go in the morning to guarantee a slice of the flavor you like. The cake is always delicious so I decided to try ordering lunch today and while the food was fine the customer service experience was really disappointing. Everyone before me seemed to get their food immediately, while I gave them my name at the counter only to never be notified my food was done. After waiting around for several minutes near the counter, I went and sat down. I watched as people came and went with their food, the women at the counter brought two other waiting customers their bags at the table, until it was just me left and one couple at a table that was already eating. No one else. No one checked to see if I had everything, or in anyway acknowledged my existence. After 10 minutes I went back up to the counter where not only did no one say a word, but the two women that were there when I gave my order immediately walked away. The remaining woman reached behind her to a shelf where a bag had been sitting for who knows how long and handed it to me. What was the point of providing my name? I never left the restaurant and yet was never notified of my food being done? Seems like the bare minimum expectation of a counter service restaurant. I regret the 30% tip I provided at the beginning of the transaction. read more

So what do you do on Pi Day (Annually Celebrated March 14th around the world)??? You go get Pie for the office. Since our team has such a sweet tooth we went with dessert over savory. We ordered a Pecan Tart, Rustic Apple Pie and Key Lime Pie. Each pie was a hit. This bakery does a fabulous job with the presentation of their desserts. If I could have ordered one of each dessert I would have. They have vegan desserts options as well. I love them so much for considering dietary restrictions. Bourbon Bread Pudding is the closest to what I've tasted in New Orleans. Perfect texture. Flavor balance is pure perfection. The Lemon Pound Cake is so good that I don't know when I will bake another one, but I will order a whole cake for Christmas. Although Southern Sweets does not actively promote its bakery as a vegan bakery, it has the BEST vegan cakes in the metro area. Altogether, they offer 10 vegan options. My two favorites are their vegan carrot cake and vegan German chocolate cake. Southern Sweets sells cakes by the slice -- a generous size -- or by the cake. Since the pandemic started several years ago, I have reduced my visits to this bakery. Although I've frequented this bakery for many years, I've only gone there three times in the past two years. The bakery's COVID-safe store policies and practices during the pandemic have been really disappointing. Even though the CDC currently labels metro Atlanta as a high transmission area where masks should be worn indoors, the employees at Southern Sweets have not been wearing masks the last two times I've been there. For this reason, I wear a mask and get my order to go. I'm in and out as quickly as possible. The bakery does have a small outdoor seating area, but it is not particularly pleasant. Due to not following COVID safety practices and the unappealing outdoor patio, I'm rating the business overall as a 4 rather than a 5. The cakes themselves are a 5. It pains me to give this business a really bad review. I used to live in Avondale and came at least a couple times a week for lunch. And the cakes are amazing. It was a great family run place - I used to always talk to the son who ran the dining room. He recognized me and my son whenever we came in. But this week I had the worst customer service experience. I called to order a cake for Father's Day because the website SAYS it ships ! I really wanted to order a pie but when I got on the phone I was told they don't ship anything. I pointed out they have an online order form on the website. After the girl going back and forth back and forth with her manager - she came back and said we only ship bars and pound cakes. Ok that was a disappointment but I picked out a pound cake and then payed 25 dollars for the shipping. I asked for information on when the cake would arrive, how long it would take. I was told about 2 days. Since I was ordering on Wed - and she could not tell me if it would ship that day or the next I asked - will it deliver on Sat ? Obviously when you are getting a perishable shipped it's kind of important to know if the cake will be there in a couple days or not. Also it was a Father's Day present... the girl said she did not know . I asked to speak to her manager who she was going back and forth with. She said the manager just left and she would call me back with the info. As you can imagine - no call back. No cake 2 days later either. I called Sat morning looking for tracking info. A VERY rude employee named Shar at first told me I must have the wrong bakery. I said I have the electronic receipt right in front of me with a date and time and your business name. I asked to speak to a manager. She said she was the manager for the day. Finally after back and forth - she came back and said the cake did not ship yet but it would ship on Monday (meaning they took my money but never did anything else , so they were going to do it now) Again - no apology, not even asking if I still wanted the cake. She would have hung up but I said - hold on, I'm really upset , this was a Father's Day present , I made it clear I was concerned about timing on the first call , explained and said - I want a refund, it's too late for the cake. With a lot of attitude in her voice Shar said ok we will do your refund. Then she got back on the line and said 'we are having trouble doing the refund we will call you back'. I said you already failed to call me back previously, I would rather remain on the line and wait. She left and came back a couple minutes later and said they could not do the refund, I was tying up the line they needed for other things and to give her my number to call back. I again said - look I'm not hanging up until I get my refund, I have no faith that you will do it. Finally a few minutes later someone else comes on the line , asks for the last 4 digits of my card, says 'your refund is complete - now I need to get you off this line.' This person , who I suspect really was the manager was also rude, peremptory to me and treated me like I was the problem. No apology at all for messing up my 60.0 order! Also at one point I asked how I could contact the owner so I could talk to them about the experience. Shar would not give the contact name or info at all - just told me to call back during the week and they might be there... would not even give a name of who to talk to !! The original mess up of the order was incredibly frustrating- but the girl who took it was polite - just had no idea what to do. That could be forgiven. But the attitude that if the two folks I talked to today who should have resolved a big miss was inexcusable. (6/17/23) I was a huge fan of this business. I drove all the way from Marietta for an Apple Pie for our Christmas dinner. The original baker and her son who ran the business were lovely to interact with. I know we are in a time we're help is scarce and customer service is not up to its normal standard - but I hope the owners will take a long look at the employees involved and how they are impacting their business. read more

I heard a lot of great things about their desserts so went to the website to place a Mothers Day order ahead of time for pick up. The site directed me to Grub Hub. A few days later, THE morning of Mothers Day, I get a text and phone call from GrubHub saying they are canceling my cakes because of an issue. Southern Sweets Bakery is one of the first places in a while that I happily made a U-turn for, catching the small sign in my rearview mirror. It's a tiny little store from the outside, and when you go inside, you're likely to find a long line waiting for you, but don't walk out!! By the name, you think it's only going to be a bakery, but Southern Sweets Bakery serves breakfast, lunch sandwiches, soups burgers and it's hard to go wrong with lunch. And while they do have a lot of meal variety, I can't take away from their sweets, which range from pies, cakes brownies, cookies, and they also have quite a large selection of vegan based cake products, that look delicious. Cakes seem to run you about $38 for a whole one, or about $6 a slice, and pies range from about $27 whole and about $5 per slice. Today I ordered their 12 oz Tomato Basil soup ($4.75) and a Fudge brownie with nuts ($4.75) The soup was very hearty and filling, coming with a sesame crusted cracker. The soup did need a little more salt (to me), but that's an easy remedy. The Brownie was kinda amazing. Moist, fresh crunchy nuts, very rich fudge which was enhanced by chocolate icing drizzled on top, and each bite just worked.The brownie itself was pretty big and thick, so downing one of those will leave you pretty full. There's limited parking at Southern Sweets, and the store in general is easy to miss, because it's not as visible from Laredo Drive, especially if you're not looking for it. There is a store sign at the corner of Laredo and Rio circle to point it out to you though. I'm glad I stumbled across Southern Sweets Bakery, and if you're in the area, give them a shot! read more

Southern Sweets has pulled me out of Yelp review hiatus! I literally had one of the best pieces of carrot cake, which is my 2nd fave dessert, of my existence here on earth. On top of that, it was a vegan slice. I'm very much a "eat a lil' errrr thang" type of gal, but I specifically went to try our their vegan desserts for an upcoming bday party that is requesting a vegan bday cake. This is THE spot that fits all of the phrases, "Never judge a book by its cover" because this gem is well hidden in a barrage of brick industrial looking buildings. "Good things come in small packages" because the spot isn't huge, so don't bring a party of 12. "Mmm Mmm Good" because those were all the sounds I made when tearing into this cake as well as the chicken salad wrap which boast "the best" ehhh it's good, full of mayo, but not the best. I remember the first time my friend told me about Southern Sweets. It was years ago, but I had just moved to Atlanta and she was giving me the rundown of all the must-try places. She raved about this bakery and I thought, "Really? Can it be all THAT?" Then once I tried SS I sounded just like her. I started obsessing over their layer cakes that looked like something out of a storybook (huge!), and especially went wild for their Red Velvet and Caramel. I really liked their Key Lime Pie too. Even though it didn't have whipped topping, it was so lip-poppingly tart and sweet that I didn't miss it. On my last visit, I stopped by on my way from the farmer's market. It was before 10am so my intent was to go in, inhale fresh-baked smells, ogle the cakes behind the glass, order *something* to legitimize those activities and leave. I'm not above eating cake for breakfast, but I decided to get an item from their actual breakfast menu. I went with the Rustic Country Cheese Toast ($4.95) and added a scrambled egg ($1.29). The menu described the toast as "topped with Vermont sharp cheddar" but I assumed that was just flowery menu speak. I decoded that to mean a slice of cellophane-wrapped American cheese on a thin slice of white bread. But I was SO wrong. When I got back in my car with the takeout container I popped the top. I literally gasped like it was a diamond ring box opening. I was surprised to see two slices of crusty, artisan-style bread. Each was coated with a thick oozy layer cheddar cheese that stretched elastically when I tore off a corner of bread. I loved every crispy-melty bite!!! The eggs were tasty too. I was able to resist the siren song of their brownies & bars, tarts, cheesecakes and pound cake...at least this time. Part of me wants to join their dessert of the month program (so they can deliver cakes, pies and tarts to my door) but then I would probably have to invest in a new wardrobe too. So not for now. I should mention one other thing: don't expect to pay grocery store bakery prices here. At SS you have to pay for what you'll get--only the highest quality ingredients. They use fresh eggs, Belgian Callebaut chocolate and Madagascar vanilla. But everything comes together to produce beautiful, richly flavored desserts that are worth the price. Treats from Southern Sweets are a worthwhile purchase for any special event. They also nicely complement all those fresh greens and vegetables you'll pick up at the farmer's market. read more

Delish! I have only come here twice but both times I ordered the mascarpone rum cake. Sooo good. $7 a slice is a little steep in my opinion BUT. the slices aren't a skimpy size so it makes it worth it. This place both times has been clean and the second time I came, they had acetate on the cakes that had been served previously so that they wouldn't dry out from exposure! There's a variety of desserts to try that all look great but i'll stick to what i know and love. If you can't tell, there are chocolate chips in the lower chocolate cake layer and there's a maybe mascarpone layer in between the vanilla and chocolate cake layers. When I see, think, taste or hear about pound cake I think of Teresa. Hers was the first pound cake I ever tasted and its brilliance in my mind has never waned over the years. As kids, usually around Christmas, my BFF and I would cut ourselves huge slices of Teresa's pound cake from the freezer. Sometimes we'd toast it; sometimes we'd eat it frozen. The pure and unadulterated buttery taste of that pound cake is something that is as clear to me today as it was the first time I had it. In fact, I attribute my desire to bake in large part to those early memories of that remarkable pound cake. Since then, most pound cakes I've tried have been disappointing - too light, too sweet, not buttery enough, texturally lacking. Still, I can't help but continue to try, hoping one day I will find a pound cake that might measure up to Teresa's. Naturally, as I browsed the many desserts at Southern Sweets, it was the pound cake that I could not resist. Though I must say, there wasn't anything in this shop I'd turn down! Last night when I got to my hotel I opened the box and dug into the pound cake. Perfect, slightly crispy top. Dense, buttery cake. Pure JOY in my heart! The verdict? Indulgence or resourcefulness? Call it what you may, but for breakfast I had a piece of chocolate raspberry mousse cake from here today. (I'm a little low in the fridge department this week.) Garbanzo B's review that mentions that its across the street from the farmers market was helpful, but its even more hidden than that. In a random (and I do mean random) industrial-eque location down the street and around the corner from the Farmers Market. Next time you go to the Farmer's Market for crab legs or a twenty pound bag of rice, make this a side trip. Little Southern Sweets has display after display of cavity producing, sugar high happiness behind the glass. Pies, cakes, cookies. . . German chocolate . . . apple pie . . . I've got to stop now. I've started to drool a bit. Did I mention the deli portion? I'm not sure who has time to come here for a quick lunch because of its location, but they also serve a solid selection of soups, salads and sandwiches. We both had work to complete on a Sunday and by 10:30 we knew everything in downtown Decatur would be packed. Looked on the ole reliable Yelp and discovered Southern Sweets Bakery served breakfast. Everyone knows this place has great desserts, the reveiws pretty much tell you that. It probably even mentions that have great sandwiches at lunch. But as long as I've been going here I didn't realize they have breakfast and really good breakfast at that. You gotta try the smoked salmon scramble with cream cheese & grilled onion folded in to soft scrambled eggs topped with crème fraiche & chives. I had Southern breakfast with parmesan cheese grits and want to have the crispy spuds next time. Bacon was crispy just like I like it along with a toasted with butter baguette. It was hard to resist buying some baked goods for later. We sat and ate there. It's located in an industrial district and inside the front part is like a little bistro and then you walk to the counter to order and I dare you not to order any pastries for later. I went to my nephew's blessing at church in Decatur, which was also near my old church in Decatur. Just in luck, I remembered and headed out there. Little did I know that it's off Laredo near Dekalb Farmers Market and Marta. Honestly, price wise, it was a little out of my range. However, I thought about it, do it cause if you want quality good and ingredients, you do pay more. You pay for what you get, right? Besides ordering two cakes - vegan ganache cake slice & oreo cheesecake. For food, just ordered scrambled salmon eggs. We sat down while food gets prepared. It's a small cafe. Seats are limited so come early or take it to go. The scrambled salmon eggs were really flavorful. There were baked pieces of potatoes to compliment the dish with a few pieces of buttered toasted bread. The vegan ganache cake is really good. Not too sweet either.
