Pad Thai has never felt so good. It wasn't what I wanted. We were hurried to our table and handed menus. After finagling the four pod seats squished next to other tables&pods, we had about two seconds to look at our options. Not ready, the waitress graciously gave us one more second. For a student trying to live on a masochist's weekly budget, the pleasant confrontation of a Thai menu cannot be resolved in three seconds. So I defaulted; Pad Thai. Appetizers arrived quickly. The spring rolls were nothing to scream about. My friend had some sort of chicken puffs and told us we had no idea what we'd missed. After those were whisked away, we strained across the tiny table to catch the fragments of conversation we were saying x3 to each other. Meanwhile we wiggled our feet and legs, in aggregate average to long in length, trying to find neutral space. Entrees came quickly. They're big on speed, in case you haven't gathered. And all dove in with satisfaction. Friend #1 into her drunk noodle dish; friend #2 into the curry that sent him into the bathroom to splash water on his face; and friend #3 her bbq Thai chicken. The Pad Thai had the perfect ratio of peanut sauce to noodles and perhaps could have used more chicken and sprouts. That is forgiveable (forgettable!) though, because it is so good and doesn't leave that peanut-laden heaviness in the bottom of your belly. It's wonderful seven hours later cold out of the doggy box after a night dominated by $6 pitchers. And that barbeque chicken? It's good when you reheat in the microwave and throw it into some pasta. The smell alone is worth bringing home leftovers. Four stars for the food. But three because I don't like to be rushed through a place. It has one door and not a drive thru for a reason. And the pods may be cool, but they waste space and infringe on leg space. Take out may be the best way to go, because they have that too! read more

I'm always a fan of Thai food, so whenever someone suggests it, I jump out of my seat. This place was no exception of that. I remember way back when, I went to Spice (in a different location) and had my first Thai food experience. The Thai iced tea put a smile to my face and the Lemongrass Chicken Breast, I would have everyday for dinner if I could. And when I went back, (just a few hours ago) I was happy to see that nothing's changed. I went to the Union Square location (hence, why I'm writing a review for this location) and I have to say that I just love the decor and vibe of the place. Very trendy. Again, like most of the places, the only issue I had was the seating. Where my friend and I were sat, it was a bit jammed with the table behind me. I don't blame them though, it gets pretty packed and I'm sure they'd want to seat as many people as they can at a time. The service was excellent. Every time my water went down half way, someone was there to fill it back up. The servers were all very kind and helped out in some way or another. To start, we had the Spicy Crispy Calamari which was so, so good. The dipping sauce was definitely the best part. For my entree, I had the Roasted Crush Salmon. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The sauteed veggies were also cooked well. I enjoy my veggies crisp and crunchy, which it was and the cone-shaped rice was just adorable. My friend ordered the Drunk Man Noodle without the shrimp (I'm allergic) which was also pretty good, had a lot of flavor. For drinks, I ordered the Spiced Thai Tea, which held all the flavors of a regular Thai Iced Tea, only with a kick from the rum. I'd recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice dinner out. I visited this restaurant on a recent trip to New York (my first time ever), and the food and drinks were excellent! I had the green beans with tofu for dinner, and it contained the perfect blend of spices, veggies and meat substitute. The mango martini I had with dinner was not as good as my meal (but the lychee mojito another person had was). Now that the review of the meal is over, here are a few reasons you should NOT go to Spice if you're already buzzed (especially if you an out-of-towner): - The bathrooms are very cool and futuristic, but with my buzz they became slightly more difficult to maneuver. This experience reminded me of that Expedia commercial where the couple thinks of sending their parents to a funky futuristic European hotel where nothing is intuitive. - Also with my buzz, the use of mirrors had me convinced that the restaurant was larger than it actually is, and I actually thought my reflection in them as I headed to the restroom was someone from the other side of the restaurant doing the same. This was pretty funny and embarassing, but fortunately nobody other than me noticed it. Damn you, pre-restaurant dirty martini (yes, it did take only one strong martini to get me sufficiently buzzed, but that was because I hadn't eaten much during the day)! Well this Spice sure looks a LOT different from the location I hit up for lunch on the Upper West Side! It's hopping like a club in there! Almost too dark to see the menus and to loud to chat with my companions, but the black and red wall in the main space is pretty damn cool. I decided to venture out of my usual noodle comfort zone and went with the volcanic chicken. I was hoping it would be spicy, like its name suggests, but basically it's just roast chicken that they light on fire...which I suppose its name also suggests. It was kinda boring. Decent enough flavor, but meh. I looked longingly at my friend's drunken noodle dish. I've learned my lesson! read more

This place was crowded upon entry. The inside was really cool and modern. There was a nice chill/hangout vibe to it. It had two floors. The service was kind of slow to begin with since they were so busy. I got the Drunken Noodles and the Suki Noodles. Both were delicious, but the Drunken noodles would have been better if it was a bigger serving. The Drunken Noodles were wide, hand pulled, pan fried noodles. It came with seafood and chicken. This is your typical flavorful pan fried Thai dish. The Suki Noodles were different; they were your clear skinny vermicelli rice noodles served in a sweet red base. It was both pan fried and soupy at the same time and came with seafood and chicken. Both dishes were delicious! From other reviews nothing else here really taste that good. The kind of place that is almost too good to be true (I know some highbrow Thai food snobs probably just rolled their eyes). I have been coming here (the old location was on University a few blocks away) since law school for their lunch special. Back then it was 6 bukcs for an app and a main dish. I think now it is 8 something maybe, but I'm not sure. If you want some gross authentic dish that is half fish sauce go elsewhere. Food: WOW! FUCKING AMAZING! PORTIONS: Very generous. One exception is if you order soda...they give you those stupid little glass bottles....if I'm thirsty I want a large bev...not some pretty bottle. Value: The best around. Service: Great. Overall: Now that Lemongrass is gone, this is my favorite Thai place. One qualification, I get the usual popular dishes, if you venture beyond I can't vouch for the food. read more

I ate dinner here for the first time out of the blue last night with a friend of mine. When we walked in we thought it was a nightclub for a second as dance music was pumping fairly loudly and red lights were flashing in the darkness. I think we both felt a little caught off guard and perhaps had second thoughts but it was pouring outside so we decided to try it out. We were told to head upstairs where we were eventually seated. I enjoyed the big white chairs. I can't stand it when I go out to eat somewhere and there isn't a place for my purse and tote bag--I was happy I was able to comfortably set them to the side of me. Our order was taken promptly. I wasn't too shocked by the prices and thought they were reasonable for the area. I liked the tall, thin glass our ginger ales came in--I felt fancy and hip. From what I can remember the noise level was only semi-annoying when it came to trying to have a conversation. However I'm not a fan of even semi-loud music in a place where dining is the main activity; but if you're about to have dinner with someone you hate talking to I could see where a place like this would come in handy. I ordered the Black Noodle with chicken. Overall I thought it was very good but I think they could go a bit more easy on the black bean sauce. The amount of food served was enough for me to take some left overs home. We were worried about time because we planned on seeing "The Muppets" but I was surprised how fast we got our food and check. If I'm ever craving thai while in Greenwich Village I will think of this place and probably eat here again. read more

I had the pad thai. It was super yummy. I will say, I AM NOT A FAN of the fresh spring rolls. The didn't have enough mint. The size was great, but the vegetarian spring rolls lacked flavor. Ordered the chicken satay--kind of a smaller serving than i expected Seafood dumplings in a Massaman sauce--the filling was just okay, nothing special Drunken Noodles--read lots of good reviews on it here but mine was way too spicy, chili flakes everywhere. I am no noob to spicy food either! The squid was nicely cooked though Chicken with mixed veggies in the Sweet and Sour sauce--yum! Dim lighting, kind of cramped seating, kind of hectic everywhere with the decor. Where do I start? At the beginning, I guess. Hostess had a constant scowl on her face despite it being early into the dinner rush. It's 6pm, your shift has just started and you are already exasperated? There is no room to wait. The waiting area for a 60+ person restaurant consists of 3 chairs. Which means that you end up waiting by the door or waiting by the stairs. Both options end up with you being constantly pushed aside by waiters and busboys. The drinks. They really push their special drink (at $11 a pop) but i would say stay away from anything that isn't water or beer. The drink special tastes like sugar. So basically take Sam's Hard Lemonade and spike it with more sugar. To continue on with your journey toward adult onset diabetes, you food will also be laden with sugar. I got the "Blackened Noodles" which meant that the same person putting extra sugar into your cocktails is also sugaring your noodles. It's disgusting. Just over-flavored drivel. I had to take a gulp of water with each bite of my food to dilute my meal. The eggs in the noodles look shriveled, old and sad and I think I ordered chicken with my noodles but you wouldn't be able to tell with the small-size pieces that came with my $15 entree. My friend had the opposite experience with her food and found her noodles bland. Does no one in the kitchen taste their food? Overall: 1 star experience. I have no idea how they stay open. Why: Drinks are bad, food is bad. Service is medicore at best, and inattentive. My water didn't get replenished until it was time for me to pay the check. Never again Spice. There are 5,000 better Thai restaurants within walking vicinity, no idea what happened to this franchise. read more

Came here with a friend after watching Hidden Figures at Regal Cinema (Union Square). We had the golden shrimp fritters, Thai fried chicken (came with fried rice & Thai sauce), and grilled chicken (came with grilled vegetables and rice). Pretty solid meal. Listen up folks-- if you want a nice, simple, and quick meal in the middle of Union Square, come to this Thai joint located just south of union sq. The service is prompt, the food is delicious, and the prices are very, very good considering you're in nyc. We dropped by for a study break and was actually looking for something really fast-- the whole meal took 30 minutes. I know that may seem drastically short for some people, but we really wanted a quick sit down lunch experience. We had the lunch special (that's also available on weekends apparently) for less than $9 each. This included an entree and a free appetizer. I mean, comeon people. I had the spicy bambo and chicken combo with the adaman dumplings (essentially Thai shumai) and my gf had the spicy cashew with tofu. Both dishes were solid. You're paying $9 for the food and I'd have to say that I've seen other restaurants serve food of this caliber for $15-18 easily. The space in here is also quite large, as it spans two floors. One other thing-- given the simplicity of the menu, in that it literally lists 2-3 ingredients of the 'base' spice and nothing else, I think this would be a great introductory Thai restaurant to take your friends who have never had Thai food. Sure, it may not be the most authentic, but it does touch on some Thai cooking elements and really captures the cuisine nicely. I highly recommend this place. read more

Price was reasonable. But... I ordered the Maekong Aged Pork Chop, and it was served to me cold. Okay not cold, but it definitely wasn't hot. And I can't say it was warm. It tasted as if it was just sitting in a room for hours. The water they was serving wasn't even cold. Even with ice in it. I like NYC tap water but this tasted as if it came from somewhere else, not filtered. I heard good reviews about this place. But my expectations of it was not so good. So I came here the other day with a few other bloggers after the men's fashion week festivities. It was about 10pm sat downstairs it's not such a big place for groups of people at least not downstairs. We sat down it took about 5mins for a server to finally come over when the server finally came asking our drink options. I asked for a ice chai tea the waiter asked if I would link boba with the drink, I declined but a person I was with asked for it the waiter then says "actually we're out of boba" um why would he offer something if they don't currently have it?? So the dinner was good I order the drunk man noodles I tried to get a side of fried rice but they only offer full size portions for the rice. The meal was good but my biggest was complaint is that we when decided to pay we specifically told the waiter how to split the bill my meal came to a total of 16.50 with tip... Later than night o check my account and see charges on my account one for 16.50 the other for 56.00 he charged my card 2x instead of using my card for my meal and the other card for the couple.. I called the next day and the manager said it ghe $56 would be refunded within 3-4 days I understand mistakes happen but I was in town for another day and having to get my money days later was not fun read more

This is probably one of the worst lunches that I've had in New York City. After a very rubbery dumpling starter, the main was a stir-fry salmon with string beans. In the bottom of the soup bowl was a tasteless liquid upon which was an unappetizing mound of rice with a couple of string beans and onions and diced fried salmon scattered around. I ordered jasmine tea which was too stringent to enjoy. I suffered through this thinking, why didn't I buy a sandwich on this beautiful day and sit in Union Square Park. This is the second time I've been to Spice. The first time was a drunken night with my friends so I didn't remember much of the experience. This time around I'm back with one of those same friends. For our appetizers we ordered crispy fried spring rolls and the vegetable dumplings. Both were great. I do wish that the vegetable dumplings were crisp on the outside like the spring rolls but nonetheless they were tasty. I had the Vegetarian basil mock duck it was fiiiirrrreeeee. Amazing. I ordered the Massaman Curry that was thick, sweet and mild curry with potato, onion and peanuts. I was surprised to see such a big portion but the downside to this was the amount of rice that was served with it. The idea of eating so much carbs at night is not great but it didn't balance with the amount of curry I was given. It was sort of like drinking soup. Otherwise the curry dish was normal and the price for it was decent. My friend's Papaya Salad with peanuts, tomato, carrot with spicy lime dressing was bigger than I thought it would have been. So I went here last night on a first date. The atmosphere was really nice which definitely was a plus. The food was pretty good too. I had noodles with shrimp, chicken & calamari, however one of my biggest pet peeves with seafood was met. The shrimp was not deveined and the tail was still on! It might as well have had the rest of the shell on! Also, I was very turned off with the fact that the server told us that there was another party of 2 waiting for the table so we needed to get up! Only downside was that our seats were right beside the employee kitchen entrance or something like that, so there was a lot of things going on. Nice decor but the food was off. I had the lemongrass seafood combo and it tasted old, as in the creatures were on their way out and the chef was glad that someone ordered this platter so he/she could get rid of it AND rake in the dough. My brother recommended this place and I've been there twice so far, once with him and once by myself for an impromptu lunch. Service is decent, although when I went by myself on a relatively slow Tuesday afternoon it took much longer than usual for a waiter to actually come and wait on me. Food is wonderful, from the chicken satay appetizers to the Penang curry and sticky rice. Their chicken and vegetable dumplings, whether steamed or fried, are a must have as well. I can also confidently say that I have virtually been to a restaurant where the water tastes so pure and clean-it's like they have a Vitamin Water dispensary! I had a good experience here. Came here for dinner at 6:30 pm on a Thursday night and was seated right away. There were 2 stories of tables, so a fair amount of seating available. I had the seafood pineapple fried rice and shared the fried calamari appetizer. The food tasted good and the portions were really generous, plenty to take home for leftovers. Not bad for the price.
