The food is fast and fresh. The delivery is quick, prompt, and polite. The prices are relatively small. Lunch specials are good values...what's not to like? There are the lines (everyone else has jumped on the spice bandwagon!) and the seats aren't so comfy and the place is small, but that's half the delight in this almost space age thai restaurant. I think this is my fav Thai place in Manhattan. It has tasty food and great atmosphere. Most of the time you at least have to wait 15 minutes, but it is worth it. Spice is sleek, modern and cool with a menu that will not hurt your wallet. An excellent alternative to fast food joints and ordering in but, the food was slightly disappointing. The Pad thai, lad nar and various other dishes all look good on paper but, I've had better thai food in less asthetically pleasing places. You get what you pay for and with that logic in mind, Spice is a great place to grab some cheap eats and drinks in a beautiful setting. I haven't been here in about three years so I don't know if things have changed but ... I've been to Spice twice: once for lunch and once for dinner. I recommend going for lunch because it doesn't get as crowded as it does for dinner and there's natural light pouring into the restaurant so you can not only see what you're eating, but you can also see the person across the table from you. (Dinner) I am not a fan of what my friend calls "mood lighting" and Spice abuses it. Dining by candlelight with background lighting?? Okay, fine but dining solely by candle light? I offered my friend some of my dish and she replied, "We got the same thing!!" I'm sorry but I couldn't SEE what she ordered let alone what I ordered...which was the Black Noodles, both times. I really liked the dish when I got it for lunch but it was too salty for my liking when I ordered it for dinner. I felt rushed to order, to eat, to sit down, get up, leave, the moment I sat down. The seating is a nightmare. The tables are placed so close to one another, it's an obstacle squeezing between tables to get to the booth seat, whether it's daytime or nighttime. Your prize? Getting to hear your neighbors' conversations but having difficulty hearing the person sitting across from you. Overrated. I can find Thai food that's just as good, or better, for less and in a better environment. read more

Food was delicious and drinks as well. Atmosphere was a bit too dark and menu on tiny letters and difficult to see in the dark. Overall a good experience but we didn't appreciate the trick with the tip. Normally places tell you on the menu that they automatically charge a tip for a party of 6. It was just the 2 of us and they automatically added 18% tip to our bill which our waiter didn't deserve. When they charged the card, they only brought out the sheet to sign and included the tip amounts (18%, 20%, 25%) although they already charged us for a tip. We asked for the breakdown of the bill to make sure our waiter did get the tip. So verify your bill before you tip 36%. read more

Very trendy and a fun atmosphere but not great Thai food. For appetizers, the fried shrimp in a martini glass was good, the duck in the lettuce cup was not. This place can basically be summed up in 4 words. Bad service. Amazing food. From trying to get seated to trying to get your bill, the place is rather lackluster in every regard. However, if you are willing to put up with all of that for a great Thai meal, its worth it in my opinion. I like Spice, I really do. But I've enjoyed better Thai food and most certainly in a less crowded envrionment. The portion I have to say is on the large side, I remember ordering the Pork Chops and there were 3-4 large pieces on my plate, I couldn't finish it all. And their seafood curry, HUGE size but overly salty and their tipee shaped rice stack not enough! I did enjoy their lychee cocktails as well as the dessert with fried bananas and vanilla ice cream. The price is very good, the quality of the food is good, the ambiance as other posters put more eloquently is space age scenster with hard plastic chairs, which you may either find modern and chic or a bit much for an entire 1 hour meal.. The room noise is very loud, there will be a wait, and it's very crowded, but having eaten there about 5 times in the past 2 months, I'd say it's manageable. I've had both veggie pad thai and spicey eggplant with tofu. As a road-warrior diner, I've also overheard the weirdest conversations, which makes me believe it's a meeting point for online daters. read more

Well well, say hello to the upscale Thai fast food restaurant. In my opinion, that is what Spice has become/is becoming. I remember when their first restaurant opened in East Village or thereabouts and while quite popular, it still had the courteous service/a good quality food. Their sister restaurant in Brooklyn (Sea) has gone down hill as well, but is still better. Those few years are long gone and Spice has almost 10 locations in NYC already - proof that it is becoming a chain, something like Applebee's. With it i believe goes the restaurant's quality and appeal. Here are my ratings for the Spice near the Union Square: Atmosphere - 3.5 Somewhat typical of Spice. Dark with neon lights, busy and very loud. The music includes played out radio tracks, which made me wonder if anyone even cared. If I'm in a good restaurant i don't want to be listening to "I'll call you maybe" several times at full volume. Anyway, they have a second floor which is only nice by the window. Food - 2.5 I think this where the real disappointment lies. Some of the usual appetizers like curry puffs, and martini shrimp are still great, but entrees are just not what it used be. Presentation is typical, ingredients are visibly not very fresh and not of top quality. And finally, the taste is significantly lacking. For example, the famous volcanic chicken used to be one my favorites. Last time i went there it was soaked in alcohol, with old veggies on the side and barely warm. In one phrase, typical of a fast food restaurant. Service - N/A Not much to rate here as service hear revolves around speed. And i guess they do a good job in that department at the expense of other more important areas such as courteous service and quality food. Price/Value - 4 It is not what it used to be in terms of price, but i don't expect anything different in NYC so that's ok. This place is still very affordable given the location. Appetizers are about $6-8 and entrees are about $12-20. I think the value went down significantly given the decline in food quality, but this is still a pretty affordable place and largely why it's still popular and fits perfectly into the fast food category. I wouldn't mind a higher price for a better experience, but that's just me. No sure if other locations are similar. read more

You really cannot complain when you get an amazing plate for 9-12 dollars. Even bottles of wine are cheap (15-17). And it feels good to be in a place so busy. However if you want to go for a dinner with a friend whom you haven't seen fopr a while and care for a nice talk without screaming at each other avoid this little restaurant. The food was terrible. I couldn't finish my appetizer (the duck wrap) or entree (pad thai) because everything just tasted off. I don't know if it was something wrong with the meat or what exactly, but something just wasn't right. The service was fine so it wasn't an entirely awful experience. My friends entree was also not very good, so I don't think it was just my plate. I guess for $8 fix price lunch menu you really can't expect much. This review is for the Spice down next to Union Square. The food was good, the restaurant was clean, and the place has a nice vibe. Definitely a much younger "hip" crowd. I'm not a huge fan of going to chain restaurants in NYC because of the selection of fantastic eateries that are unique with just as good, if not better, food. The table was incredibly small, even for just two people and due to the cramp space only one person could fit walking up and down the aisles. I had a reservation at 8:30 and was seated after about 5 minutes of waiting (which isn't too bad in my opinion), the staff was friendly albeit the service was a bit slow. The bathroom was kind of in a weird location, located right next to the entrance to the kitchen, which didn't have a door. All in all the food was okay, nothing I couldn't of gotten elsewhere, but the prices were reasonable and for two people (shared appetizer, two iced teas and two entrees) the meal was less than fifty bucks. I wouldn't necessarily go again, but I also wouldn't say to others not to go if interested. read more
