I want to say it's nice to go there to read a book or chat but if you're coming here to work with a laptop/papers, be warned of narrow working space. The two seaters are not really meant for two laptops. Coffee: I asked about their drinks and what was popular was their rosemary bee which I thought would be herby but turns out it was pretty good. The rosemary was so subtle I didn't really taste it but the honey is for sure there. So to me it was more of a honey flavored coffee. You can substitute for oatmilk for additional cost. I'm a fan of this spot. It's usually hard for me to find a nice, quiet, chill coffee spot for me to work in as I'm a fan of working in quiet and having enough private space for myself... As a local to the area and not knowing many spots, I found SPL and decided to give it a go. I was happily pleased! As a barista myself, I never really treat myself to fancy lattes. I asked the barista what she recommended. The Rosemary Bee Latte immediately caught my attention. Decided to give it a go and was MIND BLOWN. I got it served over ice with almond milk, and the beautiful honey bee mixed with the espresso and rosemary gave such a nice and elegant, not-so-sweet taste. Yuuum. Even got some solid laptop work in before it got too late and dark in the night, and cold in the shop. It's a rather small shop, with a few parking spots upfront in a tiny corner/stop strip mall of Koreatown. But I loved my experience here. The espresso in both of our drinks was burnt and bitter. For him, both beverages were not drinkable. I powered through. The pastries were not any better. The plain Croissant was baked too long and thus overly chewy, the apples in the Apple Pie were underbaked and the crust was over-baked, and the Chocolate Chip Cookie did not have enough leavening, resulting in a flat, dry, oily cookie. I am not sure how crowded this place can be at around that time but It wasn't busy when I went. It could be less busy on that day because it rained. some coffee places are way overpriced nowadays.... but this place is Not! so i was super glad.. two drinks were like less than $10. Iced latte: coffee tastes good, i think they use bitter coffee beans, not much acidity. Chai latte: way too watery..... you can tell from the color. First time we came we tried their :::::rosemary bee::::: quad shot w oat which was slightly sweeter than I prefer but still good once we added the two extra shots (just 1$ more) and the :::::dry kapp:::: oat and it's soooo good! Five stars all around but I think because we had asked about how sweet it is they made it less sweet because second time we came we just ordered the same things and didn't inquire about sweetness and it was too sweet. Spl. Coffee is one of the closest coffee shops to my house, a cute little place in a strip mall on 3rd Street. I heard about it from my husband Matt B., who is a coffee fiend, and went on my own last month to grab a cappuccino and chat with the owners Karen L. and Jonathan D. for an article on Koreatown (I do write for work when I'm not writing free Yelp reviews no one asked for). The shop is lovely, clean and open with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Most of the decor is neat and simple, but the whole coffee bar set-up is painted with a colorful mural by two great local street artists (if you've seen chubby chicken or cat graffiti around L.A., those are the guys). I imagine the place gets busier when people aren't masked up and scared to see each other, but when I went, it was chill, and I appreciated the relaxed atmosphere. My cappuccino was delicious, and I really enjoyed talking to Karen and Jonathan. They're a second-generation L.A. couple with roots in Silver Lake and Echo Park (they both went to the high school my mom attended when she was fresh off the boat), and grew up hanging around Koreatown. One of their frequent K-Town spots was Thai Original BBQ, which is now their fellow strip mall tenant. Karen wanted to run a coffee shop even when she was a kid, and she's done a wonderful job with Spl. The coffee is excellent, and everything they offer is either made in-house or sourced super locally. If you're looking for a good cup of coffee in Koreatown, Spl. will set you right up. read more

This is a new-to-me spot that I discovered nearby! Absolute gem. I will say that this plaza is a bit awkwardly placed and a lot of traffic passes by, thus going unnoticed. There's a bunch of parking though. Glad I walked over and grabbed a cappuccino and vanilla latte. Inside has a cute little petite vibe to it. They are out of pastries by mid morning so don't dilly dally and get here earlier if you'd like a sweet bite to eat! For savory bites, they have various (very hipster & very delicious lol) and fairly priced offerings like smashed avocado toast and prosciutto arugula sandwiches, absolutely no complaints here. This place has a terrible customer service, the girl who took my order was so stand off-ish and was super uncomfortable. SPL (pronounced "spill") isn't an acronym, but it could very well stand for simple pleasures of life. The coffee shop gets a lot of things right: reasonably priced menu; good drinks; excellent service; and free parking. Coffee and expresso drinks range in price from $3-5; most competitors in K-Town charge at least a dollar more for comparable or inferior fare. (Don't forget to check-in on Yelp for a 20% discount!) My cold brew ($3.50) was smooth with notes of chocolate - just like the staff promised. The owners clearly care about their business, as they'll happily strike up a conversation about their products with anyone who walks through their door. And, parking is free in the strip mall's private lot, but it fills up at lunch time due to SPL's proximity to Thai Original BBQ. The space is peaceful and calm thanks to the simple white, blue, and grey color scheme and the large windows providing ample natural light. There's an ecclectic mix of artwork and succulents to keep things interesting as well. This would be the perfect place to study if there were more tables with outlet access (only those against the wall) and if the chairs were a little less rigid. If I'm trying to stay focused, uncomfortable chairs keep me from getting too comfortable, but these were a little harder than I would have liked. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the hours I spent here, and will definitely be back! read more

Breakfast is a problem for me. I'm an early riser but I don't like to cook in the morning. I prefer to use that time to organize, clean and exercise. So I'm always looking for a place to stop in for coffee and food on my way to my first meeting. And twice I've been to SPL. And both times I've been very happy. There is a parking lot (huge in this neighborhood) and the staff is just fantastically friendly. The coffee is good and they have more than one size. It's in a less than beautiful mini strip mall but the place itself is adorable and thoughtful in the layout and design. And I am just ROOTING for these folks to make it. They offer a Yelp check in deal and they graciously accept it every time you go. I wish the pastries I've tried were better. The blue corn blueberry scone looked great and sounded awesome but wasn't that tasty. And the muffin I had another time wasn't that great either. All that said - I want this place to succeed. It does so many things right. And I will keep going back. And you should go too. And bring your friends. This should be a success story... It's worth a visit. 5 stars for SPL Coffee! I rarely give out five stars and I have to admit, I am hard to please, but my expectations were met. . . and then some. Pronounced like "spill", SPL Coffee is one of Koreatown's newest and hottest coffee shops. Located on a small strip mall adjacent to Thai Original BBQ and Restaurant, SPL Coffee has limited parking spots, but there is free parking, which is hard to find in K-Town. I love exploring new places and SPL Coffee showed up on my radar as a hot and new place on yelp, so I had to give this place a try. We were greeted by Karen of SPL and she was so kind and friendly. I ordered the "Dry Kapp" and Matcha drinks and they were both phenomenal. The "Dry Kapp" is unique to SPL and is basically a twist on a cappuccino, which was quite light and refreshing. There is a strong taste of the coffee beans (which is a blend of both Columbian and Kenyan), but it is not too overpowering. Now in terms of the matcha, I was very pleased. I am extremely picky when it comes to my matcha because I've had some pretty bad matcha and some excellent ones and SPL delivered it! It was sweet and balanced with both the milk and green tea powder. I really had no complaints. The interior is also cute with a cool neon sign, reading "Spill the beans" - perfect for any instagram or snapchat story. My only critique would be the chairs because everything was so cool and trendy, I felt like the chairs reminded me too much of a computer-chair. It's definitely a specific aesthetic, but it's just my personal opinion. Overall, SPL Coffee wins in taste, price, and aesthetics. You'll be seeing me again, SPL. Cheers! PS. Both are valid and yet, somehow, amidst the chaos, we may have forgotten that there is still a certain oasis thriving and producing bountiful urban chill vibes with a delicious reprieve in the form of an authentic, clean and welcoming neighborhood coffee shop. On the edge of Koreatown where I live, there exists such an Oasis called Spl. Coffee at the corner of 3rd and Ardmore. Its welcoming white tile floor accented with black shades, comfortable chairs and cool sustainable chic décor nose-dives my anxiety meter down to zero as soon as I walk in the door. The coffee bar itself is accented with hip, pastel-hued anime, the walls are adorned with literal skateboard art, and the soft glow of a neon sign on the one cool solid stone wall reflects splashes of LA sunshine from the floor to ceiling windows across the way in this beautiful feng-shui bistro. The beans themselves are locally roasted by LA-based Lightwave close to historic downtown, whose delightful, slightly chocolatey medium blend contains hints of apple, pomegranate and honey depending on the season. Tantalizing the palate in a variety of A+ coffee house staples are the existential, heartwarming classic drip, perfect vanilla latte and green tea matcha that is happiness in a cup. Additionally (and I am loathe to report this because I still want one to be left for me every morning), the jalapeno cheddar bagels with cream cheese are the current reigning champions of ultra-satisfying café cuisine. Finally, all of this would be reason to frequent Spl. on its own, but the key ingredient (and my inspiration for coming here several times a week) are the music and the people. I'm putting these two ideas in the same sentence because the proprietor, Jonathan, personifies the feel-good, relaxed and friendly beats of the reggae, R&B and classic hip hop that accentuate the overall experience, inducing creativity, productivity and friendly chatter with an ambiance that makes you feel like everything is going to be alright. This magic also permeates to the rest of the staff who are the nicest, most chill people you'll ever want to meet and infuses itself into the amicable energy of its patrons, many of whom bring their furry friends to join in the peaceful, merry foray. I absolutely love this coffee shop and I think it's a treasure in Koreatown. I usually come here in the morning right before work and the atmosphere here is so laid back and relaxed. From the super chill aesthetic of the shop to the kind and relaxed personalities of the baristas, this place is the place to go if you're looking to have great coffee, pastries, and a nice place to just collect your thoughts. I think that the furniture made from plywood and concrete and hard metal give the coffee bar a very Los Angeles look, a city that is constantly under construction, but unabashedly so. I especially love the roosters that are painted up on the bar itself. One of their roosters is holding a cup of coffee and the other has a Los Angeles Dodgers hat on. The small mural is also painted with blue palm trees and blue skies and there's a cute depiction of the downtown LA Skyline on the mural as well. This is a solid cafe in Korea town. On a random weekday afternoon, I was pretty much the only customer in the shop so I had my choice of seating. There is complimentary wifi - just get the password from the barista. Their menu is simple, but they have a few specialty drinks to choose from, including the dry kapp. I wasn't in the mood for something sweet so I went with a regular latte, but I would definitely be open to revisiting for that drink! I love their cups (ceramic models of crushed red cups) - although for how much I paid, the serving size seemed kind of skimpy. There is also a spacious, clean bathroom available for customers. I've passed by this place so many times and today I went in to work and to try out their coffee. This is my new favorite place. Why? The drinks are perfect (custom drinks that are not overly sweet - just perfect)! I tried their rosemary bee (honey, 2 shots of expresso, & rosemary? - YUM) A few hours later I tried their Dry Kapp (iced capp w/a bit of syrup & milk) - a bit strong (make sure to stir it really well). Place is small, but the space is well utilized - small tables, and long table along the window w/stools. It is clean and shiny and their bathroom is clean, too. Lots of windows, so an abundance of natural lighting. Very simple decor. The place was a little warm when I first arrived, but it was tolerable. The a/c kicked in later and the temperature was fine. They were playing jazz and the volume was just right. Often times coffee places are blaring their not-so-great music. Wifi is strong and is password protected. I came here to drink coffee, eat and work. The chairs are not the most comfortable (but i have a typical asian butt), but it kept my posture straight. :D The staff is really nice with great manners.
