Where did the avocado go on my avocado toast? The way they make it now it should be called arugula toast ! I raved to my daughter about how good the avocado toast is here but she said there was barely an avocado on it so I took a look under all the arugula and found a very thin layer of green stuff it looked more like a spread like the way mayonnaise and mustard is spread on a bread I guess it was avocado but couldn't taste it . It was disappointing because it's not cheap and I expect at least half an avocado on it for the hefty price . I hate it when a restaurants starts to slowly get greedy , less but same price . Other places put loads of avocado and that is why it's called " avocado toast " our cappuccinos were cold and it was hard to catch one of the servers attention too busy . read more

What a real shit show this was! We (four people total) came to the bike rental portion of the cafe to get a couple bikes and do a loop around the trail as you do (and as you are encouraged to do, given the name of the cafe.) The bike mechanic working there was a LUNATIC!!! I started recording at one point because I couldn't believe the way he was speaking to us. He was clearly stressed out as there were no other employees (just plenty "we're hiring" signs..) but he basically told us "it's hard to multitask and fix this guys bike AND rent you guys bikes, there's only one of me, if you want to rent bikes walk over the cafe portion of this place and ask the manager for permission, then come back here and rent a bike, I don't know, there's only one of me, you can't expect me to be able to do all this" My first instinct was to laugh, because this guy didn't even say hello, just started his tirade. So we listened to him, walked over, waited in line, asked a manager to help us, they said nothing but "yes", so we confusingly walked back to the bike guy, who said "them saying yes doesn't mean anything to me", so at this point we are blown away by how useless and inefficient everyone is and leave, when a quiet manager or owner came out to help us. Three other parties were not as patient as us and left. I don't blame them. Bikes were great, but when we came back and ended up paying $5 just for lemonade, we knew that would be our final visit. Don't really recommend. Maybe come once just to say you did? Also if anyone wants the video of the bike mechanic yelling at us, hit me up, it is hilarious. OH ALSO, the bike mechanic kept yelling that he couldn't help us because his shift was ending "in five minutes." An hour later when we came back to return our bikes, he was still there. When he did close up the shop a half hour later, he just hung out with friends AT THE CAFE he was so desperate to leave an hour ago. That's why he couldn't help us, right? He had to leave? I was recently in Los Angeles to visit some friends, and we took a bike ride into Frogtown, where we stopped at Spoke. I very much liked this place. It was warm Saturday and the patio was full, with a vibrant eclectic crowd. We went into the very small ordering area and grabbed a couple of beers and ordered some food. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with fries and a tasty IPA beer, and I was definitely not disappointed. The grilled cheese was one of the best I've ever had. On top of that it was very reasonably priced. The patio is shaded in parts, which is good in the summer heat. They also have a cool little bike shop on the premises to get things for your cycle if you need them. It is very smart, because if I were to guess, 90% of their business is from people cycling in. Since I took up cycling along the LA river, I have been going to this cafe to get a quick coffee break with my family. Last Saturday they were really busy and the breakfast burrito order was taking rather long. The email confirmation for the order had gone to my junk folder so I did not know when to go up to the counter to check as I was seated rather far away and could not hear the order called out. I went over once and asked the lady at the counter and she told me to come back after 25 mins and I sent my kid after 25 mins but it was still not ready. I think it took another 5-10 mins and my kid came back with an extra chocolate chip salted cookie and an apology from the lady for the delay. That was really sweet of them and I really appreciated the excellent customer service. I will stay a loyal fan of this place! read more

This place is sooo cute! Stopped by with a friend during our bike ride along the river. We both ordered lattes and were pleasantly surprised when we were told that they were not charging for coffee, but simply taking tips. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but the latte was delicious and had a pretty leaf design too. They also sell snacks if you need some energy to continue your ride. I loved the decor -- there was the cutest little wall of succulents and plenty of seating for people to relax. There's also a little store on the side if you want to rent or buy a bike or bike accessories. Stopped in for my fourth time today (Sunday afternoon brunch) with the new puppy--it's a great spot for dogs. Every time I've been, it's a 5* experience for food, drinks, and ambience. But they've got some growing pains with line management and wait times. It was a 10-20 minute wait to order anything 3x over the course of the 3 hours we were there, which is rough. As a suggestion, have a separate drinks/ bakery only cashier (maybe on a wireless checkout tablet?) because that portion of the kitchen does not seem overworked--and you even have that window to pop the drinks out of! We'll definitely be back, but I really hope they, like my new puppy, can grow up for the better over time. read more

If you're biking along the LA River Bike Path you have to check out this cafe. It's a great place to grab an espresso, some fuel like a granola bar or banana, or even get a flat tire fixed. This is going to be closer to the end of the path in Echo Park and very easy to locate! I always make sure I stop by when I'm biking the river path on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday (the only days they're open at the moment). They have delicious lattes and cold brew, and a variety of other drink options. Very open space with chairs, tables, bike racks, etc. I know they have live music every so often, but I have been unable to be there during a show thus far. Great concept! read more

I think I've reviewed them in the past, but, I'll do it again, just in case. First, the coffee shop is great! After a ride or during-- a cafe latte is a hit! I look forward to it every time. Secondly-- the vibe really works for me. It's outdoor, it's next to the LA River Bike path, and the people who there are super cool! Richard, Laurie are always so good to us. Thirdly-- the bike shop is wonderful. Dane is so fU$*ing bike smart. His knowledge is equally matched by his love of riding. I love having him working on my bikes and others. He loves to share what he's doing with me/ us. It's not a big shop but they always have what we need. Dane and Laurie know their bike stuff and always have the coolest stuff. I have to buy every time. Soon, they will be a functioning restaurant with beer taps! Just marvelous! read more

I may have found the best coffee in Los Angeles. Spoke brews beans from Trystero, a local micro-roaster whose former garage shop in Atwater was the stuff of legend among coffee aficionados I've spoken with. Right now you can find Trystero in only two locations: here and Handy Market in Burbank, and I have no idea if Handy actually brews coffee or just sells the beans. I've had coffee at all the usual suspects around the city, and the best I've found has been at G&B/Go Get Em Tiger, Dinosaur, and Civil. This coffee is right up there with them, and could very well be at the top. I'll have to spend some more time at Spoke before making any kind of absolute declaration, but for now I'm happy to report that you have a very real reason to visit this out-of-the-way location in Frogtown. read more

Spoke - you had me at kid-friendly! Lunched here w/my husband and 2 kids and really enjoyed it! Parking was fairly easy despite it being a bit busy. When you arrive, you lineup and place your order and your food will be brought out to you. There's plenty of (mostly covered) outdoor seating, and a little play area for little kids. My oldest son is slightly obsessed withe the LA River so he was beyond stoked to be so close to it! Just be careful of bike riders on the trail when you're out there checking it out! The food was really good - we both tried their burger. The waffle cut fries are a nice touch and reminded us of Home and the side salad was delicious. Our kids shared the grilled cheese and liked it. My only complaint was that it was a bit pricey. Still, we enjoyed the atmosphere and I loved their iced vanilla latte! Definitely a unique spot that we'd love to bring newbies to! read more

We went here for breakfast, each ordering something different. Everything tasted really good. I don't even understand what the potato side was- was it smashed potatoes? What I do know is, they were some of the best potatoes I have ever had. The bread was delicious too. I had the tostada, and tasted the other dishes- tacos, burrito, egg dish, and I enjoyed each equally. My young granddaughter didn't finish her breakfast. There are a few potatoes calling me from the refrigerator. Would anyone notice if one of her potatoes was missing? Who am I kidding? I could never stop at one. A good amount of seating with umbrellas, a variety of options. Inside the cafe is very tiny, they have a limit of about 6 customers inside to place their order (no seating inside, only ordering). They have bathrooms as well. I ordered the breakfast bun and it was amazing and a great price. Parking in the area is all street, and the cafe itself sits at the end of a dead end. This place it's absolute amazing!!! Ambiance 10++ great music, clean, spacious, chill, very hip. Food ? Out of this world, they have this strawberry -watermelon lemonade, the tempeh burger was the best I've ever had and the fries so tasty. My friend had a regular burger and he was talking about it all day saying that it was so tasty. Also you can rent bikes and cruise around the LA river and work out that meal. My organization recently had our holiday party here, and it was such a great experience!! Laurie, the owner, was super wonderful to work with and made sure we had plenty of vegan and gluten-free options for those with various dietary restrictions. The space is lovely, there's lots fun art, lights strung up, and the bike rental section in the back is a fun addition to the cafe. There's plenty of covered seating so you can stay shaded. The food was BOMB. We had a lot of different items, including the vegan and non-vegan BLAT sandwich, chicken bacon sandwich, the waffle fries, shishito peppers, kale salad, and cauliflower farro bowl, which was definitely a crowd favorite. Everything was so so yummy and folks with dietary restrictions got to try lots of things, rather than just being stuck with a salad. The staff were also so lovely and helpful throughout our time there. Really looking forward to going back to just have brunch or lunch and hang out! My friend ordered fries and they were over cooked. And our other friend had a beautiful looking salad but she said it had too much arugula. Can't please everyone! I really wanted to love this place. As a freelancer with a dog, it's weirdly tough to find dog-friendly spots for coffee, food, AND beer with a shaded patio and strong WiFi -- so I was already peak swoon on walking in, and after setting up the pup and ordering my drink and meal from the super sweet cashier, I thought I'd found my new spot. When I couldn't connect to WiFi, I thought it might be my computer, so I asked the food runner if he had a guest password. He said he'd check, and proceeded to avoid eye contact with me for 10 minutes as I (visibly) troubleshooted. After a second restart, I went inside to ask if maybe I could have the Scout employee password -- a mildly annoying request, but not at all unheard of, and one I asked in a tone so deferential and apologetic I might as well have also screamed "I'M FROM IOWA CAN YOU TELL???" -- as I had a deadline, and I'd ordered food and drink so I could... eat and work, at Spoke! The manager's reply: "Um, we can't actually do that, for our purposes." It was in exactly the tone you think, and he didn't even look at me -- if he had, he'd have seen a tired girl holding a laptop looking utterly defeated. The food was meh and everything was overpriced. Waffle fries are good, of course, but you can get fries anywhere. Lots of good dogs, but there are good dogs everywhere. So glad this place exists. Right on the bike path, it is the perfect pitstop on a long ride. Awesome breakfast burrito with melted cheese, crisp potatoes, bacon. Breakfast tacos are huge, filling and delicious. The hot sauce is on point. I make a point to stop by here on any ride on the LA river path and get at least a Cortado. Burrito or more if I'm hungry. Just had a drip, excuse me, pour over coffee, here but the place is way cool. Just open on weekends now and right next to the Los Angeles River Bike Trail, just south of the Glendale Freeway. Wonderful atmosphere for some snacks and an espresso, or latte. Nice area to sit down with fellow cyclists and even a bike stand to use for free to make an adjustment, or heaven forbid, change a tire. read more

Husband and I took the car here - should've biked it! There's an incredible bike path going right past Spoke Bicycle Cafe. Decor is informal and very inviting. They have some good books to read while you're waiting for your food and drinks to be served. Both my husband and I ordered the veg buns - a little on the salty side but very tasty. My iced americano was on point, and the husband's iced mocha was yummy too -- I tried it. I'll be back to chill and grab a bite the next time I'm in LA. read more

Lots of people on a Friday afternoon, was easily frustrated at how small the room was to wait in line to order. Plus the door opens inwards so every time the food is being ran you have to squish among the other people in the room to get away or flee outside. The guy at the register seemed very annoyed with me, and immediately made me feel like an outsider even though I grew up less than a mile down the road. Yet, personal opinions aside, I had an Orange Ginger Cubano which was delicious, and a small side of sourdough toast with butter and jam. Simple, but sometimes all you need. Wasn't able to connect to the WiFi, but was able to ride inside on my bike off the river with nothing but ease, that was incredibly cool. Perfect for grabbing coffee/food/beer off the river if you live in the area, lots of space to hang out and work in or catch up with friends, but definitely hit or miss with servers and lengthy lines. read more

Just discovered this gem a few weeks ago. Been there twice. Right off the LA River Bike Path, so its a great respite if you're riding and need a break, bite to eat and recharge, or get some repairs on your bike if need be. Lots of options for food, pastries, coffee, and even drinks. Pretty crowded on Sunday breakfast and lunch. Only complaint is customers who brought their dogs(they're allowed), their furry friends will bark at other dogs, sometimes get aggressive, which might be unpleasant to those trying to enjoy their meal. It started to look like a dog park at one point hehe. But overall I love this space. It's very laid back and they also have music and comedy night shows, which I've yet to attend.
