This place is definitely not good for small children. The food was good but for the price we paid for, this restaurant doesn't even have a changing table. It doesn't make sense. Absolutely loved this place. My son and I had dinner on Saturday night. Ordered specialty cocktails first. He had an Old Fashioned, I was envious, it was light and full of great flavor. I had the Gin & Tonic which got too sweet toward the end. The highlight of our drinks was the Bison Tartare. It was so wonderful...I really wanted to lick the plate but promised not to embarrass that night. Dinner was wonderful, even shared a Torte for Dessert. The atmosphere is very cool, watched the Chefs at work making sure every thing that came out was total perfection. The service was...could I say more than perfect? Never wanted for anything, never had to look for service and when they were at the table it was quick and unobtrusive. Just came back from New Orleans and had dinner at Emeril's place. Service was white glove, very impression. Sorry Emeril, Spoon and Stable has got you beat and didn't even need white gloves. :) read more

Since we couldn't get in for a reservation for several weeks we opted to go and sit in the bar. We both ordered the pork tacos and they were very good. We loved the flavor combinations. Liked them so well we got another plate. Next moved to dessert and this was amazing. We tried a chocolate dish and also a nut bread with bananas. Wow! Both were spectacular! Pretty sure the best dessert I have ever had anywhere. Service was fantastic and the space in beautiful. Want to go back soon to try more from the menu. read more

Very disappointed. The service was excellent and the decor is lovely, but the food quality was poor, especially considering the reviews and hard-to-come-by reservations at this restaurant. One dish consisted of two pieces of completely rare- raw actually- venison, each about the size of a silver dollar. The mushrooms in the snapper entree were absurdly overpowering. We didn't like the wine or side dishes we ordered. For dessert, the pineapple creme brulee (what!) was a total miss- perhaps our mistake for ordering it? The chocolate financier, however, was wonderful. For one nice dessert, we were not happy to have paid $270. Don't fall for the hype surrounding this place. read more

I travel quite a bit and love finding great spots like this one. The interior is cozy and well done. A good amount of seating at the bar and dining area. Loved the food! Bison tartare was my favorite. I also got oysters (nice that they come in smaller quantities), crab salad and gnocchi. I asked for recommendations on champagne and wine that were on point. You'll love the desserts as well. The staff were very helpful with questions. Nathaniel at the bar even gave city tips of what to see. This spot was so good I went twice in a just a few days. Came here for brunch Sunday morning and was pleased. My girlfriends and I have been eyeing this place for a good minute and we decided it was finally time to go. We called the night before to reserve some seats, but as we guessed, it was completely booked. The hostess on the phone kindly told us that we could come in right when they open @ 10 and we could get a seat in the lounge. We weren't to pleased with that because I don't like sitting next to the bar. I will say though, it was not that bad. We still felt as though we were in the main dining area. The food was great and the crepe cake (the main reason why we came) was delicious. The ambiance and our server was perfect as well. Overall I would give it a 8.5/10. My friend and I are visiting from Texas and Iowa, and we liked this spot so much last night that we came back for dinner tonight, despite other great options nearby. First, the food is original and creative, and don't pass up the craft cocktails. The service was spectacular from start to finish both nights, right down to the hostess wishing us well on the way out. I made a couple of special requests that were fulfilled without hesitation. Isaac was a super personable, attentive bartender and Gus was a very proficient server who remembered us on our return visit. They definitely made our night special. And finally, their music selection (Phantogram, College, Rhye) is awesome. I have every intention to be back again next time I'm in Minneapolis. read more

Let me qualify the review with a couple of improvisos: 1. While I'm a pretty good cook, I'm not a chef or trained cook. I've been cooking for 30 years, but not at the level of education that Spoon and Stable's chef does. 2. I'm not a sommelier or bartender. I worked in the wine industry for 3.5 years during and after grad school residency, becoming pretty familiar with alcohol service and quality of alcohol. 3. I'm not unfamiliar with a chef's tasting menu meal, however. Having eaten at the French Room of the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, Ludivine in Oklahoma City, Charlie Trotter's in Chicago (best one so far), and other places, it's one of my favorite manners in which to have great dining experiences. The evening at Spoon and Stable was very generous, to say the least. The service was great (although their pronunciation of French winemakers needs help), the pacing of the courses was good (albeit a bit quick at the end due to size: I'll get to that), and the variety of textures, foods, styles, etc., was very satisfying. My companion and I did the tasting menu paired with the wine/cocktail pairing (another issue later to be explained). Pros: The chef is truly working to provide a well-rounded, exploratory menu of a variety of foods that stem from classic treatments (foie gras terrine, ravioli-like prep, a porridge of mushroom and chicken with lots of umami, and others). So much of this was really engaging, thought-provoking, and the wine pairings were quite well done. The desserts REALLY clenched the ending, with that marvelous young woman really transfixing our palates after a sea of savory we experienced. The staff working directly in front of us (the master salad-maker and vinaigrette-maitre) answered countless questions from us without breaking once from his work, illuminating us as to his various items he was preparing. Cons: There aren't many here because I want to underscore that we really liked the experience. That being said . . . 1. Getting water to us took a while when we were seated. 2. While the booze portion introduced acidity frequently, I feel this element of taste was under-represented in the course tastings (save for the kumquat that was really tasty). 3. While most wine pairings were paired well, the sweet vermouth paired with the kumquat was way over the top. 4. The introduction of cocktails with the foods, particularly that number, is too much. On the surface, it looks as if there is not a true exploratory nature to your sommelier or chef's approach to pairings in what is, in my opinion, the top dining experience your restaurant offers. Explore the wines you have and your food you offer, and be more creative. Use smaller cocktail servings as another type of amuse-bouche course if you feel a need to feature your bartender, but the end of the meal might lead to unsafe driving as customers leave this experience. 5. The most important notion: TOO MUCH FOOD, particularly in the last three or four courses. If you trust the quality of your grillmaster (who truly was a monster, working with a freedom and skill that was mesmerizing), your various chefs, and your ingredients, make smaller portions. The raviolis should be two, not three. The porridge could be at least HALF that size. The foie terrine could be a THIRD of that size. The ribeye could be at least HALF that size. People would pay for them if they are well-made, creative, and tasty. Overall, a great restaurant. Fun to attend and have a meal. Fun with a friend. Some really tasty courses and a thriving bar and wine selection. read more

8th time my girlfriend and I have visited S&S and it has never disappointed. - Bison Tartare is an iconic dish that we get every time, it is amazing. I get it for dinner, I get it for brunch, I'd brush my teeth with it if I could. - Bread and homemade butter is always excellent - Cocktails are creative and generally strong - The crudo was delicious and had a good sweetness to it on top of the acidity - Mafaldi cacio Pepe was good but I was hoping for more prosciutto / bacon - Venison was one of the best pieces of red meat I have ever had, along with perfectly grilled onions and a delicious beet slaw - Ramen - miso paste was a bit thick / hearty but still incredibly delicious. Veal was tender and high quality - Honey cream cake is a classic and amazing, light sweets are a nice touch as well - If I had to give some room for improvement, I would say I've never really found their draught beer selection to be up to par with the rest of their selection. I'd love to see a Todd the Axe Man, Dangerous Man PB Porter or other local classics from time to time read more

I'll start out by saying this was some of the best food I've had in a while. I had the bison tartare, the tamarind pork chop, and a fantastic gin-based cocktail. All three were prepared exceptionally well-- wonderfully flavorful, tender and delicious. The tartare was so light and fresh-tasting it was more like seafood than red meat. I'm taking a star off because I think what distinguishes a good restaurant from a great restaurant is the quality of service provided and honestly the real test of this is going in as a solo diner-- restaurants are predisposed not to want your business because you typically take up a two-top, and only order half as much. My waiter here was weirdly cold and standoffish in a way that made me feel really unwelcome-- he barely made eye contact, seemed annoyed when I asked him questions about the menu, and in general made me feel rushed in a way that was really annoying. Everyone else from the bartender to the guy refilling water was much friendlier, so maybe this dude was just having an off-night, but based on how chatty he was with larger tables, I don't think that's the case. I still think in terms of everything else, this is a fantastic place for a nice dinner out and well worth the price. read more

There aren't enough stars for this place. Spoon and Stable has undoubtedly already become one of the most sought-out restaurants in the Twin Cities, and will surely continue to put Minneapolis on the map as one of the greatest food towns in the country. I had been anticipating the opening for months (as was everyone else, apparently!), and was fortunate to get kitchen counter seats on opening day! This was an incredible experience, watching the staff diligently work and truly enjoy what they were doing. The owner-chef-genius himself, Gavin Kaysen, chatted with us during service and was so sweet and was clearly thrilled with how excited all of us were for being there and cheering him on! The general manager came over and introduced himself and again, so sweet, asked us how we were doing and made some lovely conversation! I felt so special and welcome, which only made me happier and wanted to keep ordering as much as I could! The food is some of the best I've ever eaten. I loved everything I had, and know for a fact that I'll keep this place on a regular occurrence (since the bar/lounge area has its own menu and fun atmosphere). The Winter menu is what you'll see right now, and while I don't know how often it will rotate, you won't be disappointed in the choices whatsoever. The pumpkin soup was absolutely perfect for cold weather and the brioche cracked perfectly into its contents - so creamy and delicious! The creamed spinach with cheese curds - so Minnesotan, and so impeccable! The Day Boat Scallop Crudo - wonderful chilled starter, not too heavy, and wonderful flavors. Papardelle - it's actually with a GOAT ragu, not at all what you'd expect, nice crunch added with the oregano breadcrumbs :) The ravioli - blows any sort of eggplant parmesean-style pasta you've ever had out of the water. Aaaaaand the dessert - I had an incredible lemon curd mousse - totally something I'd never have ordered, but on recommendation, ended up being one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. Pastry Chef Diane Yang is rockin' it! Honestly, this place doesn't need a review. It already has the best ones out there. Hype on hype on hype. That's what Spoon and Stable received for months before it opened, and for good reason given that a chef of Gavin Kaysen's repute was not only behind the concept but owns the place. I had to book 6 weeks out to get an actual dinner reservation but did manage to stop in once for drinks a few weeks ago, and my first impression was positive enough that I got very excited as last night rolled around. The Good: -The Spoon and Stable space is nothing short of spectacular. Under high ceilings you find the perfect combination of vintage and modern, and the lighting is perfect (meaning I didn't notice it once during my two visits, which is a success). The open plating / food serving area is a superb touch and makes you feel connected to the kitchen. The noise level is also just right - not loud, but loud enough to feel busy and create a sense of energy. -The bread we were offered to start was excellent, a wheat sourdough with delicious fresh butter on the side. Yum. -Crispy potatoes: simple but well executed. Perfectly cooked and salted and very filling. -The bacon-wrapped Monkfish was delicious and perfectly cooked, along with being expertly plated / presented. -The Wood Roasted Chicken I had was cooked perfectly. Very tender and extremely tasty, at least when I didn't use too much of the salsa verde that came with it (see below). -The side of fennel sausage, potatoes/carrots, etc. that came with my chicken was fantastic. The sausage had a bit of an odd texture due to the breadcrumbs, yet I found it delicious. Definitely the highlight of my meal. The Not-so-Good: -When seated, the girlfriend and I got different versions of the menu (items on the "Sea" and "Land" portions were different). Our server corrected the error and got us both the right menu, but I'm not entirely sure how that happens (I mean, you throw out the old menus and keep the new menus, it's not that hard). Neither version of the menu was the same as the one listed online (Again, not difficult to scan in the new menu and post it online). I was excited to try both the Pappardelle and Cider Glazed Chicken (on the menu posted online and raved about by reviewers) but neither was on the menu they had that night, which was a pretty big disappointment. -The cocktails are inconsistent. The same Manhattan I had that was a generous serving and strong a few weeks ago was a meager serving and watered down this time, to the point it wasn't very good at all. -Our server didn't know the menu nearly as well as she should have, especially regarding gluten free items. Given a restaurant of this stature/price range, servers should have the entire menu memorized, down to the most minute ingredients and preparation details. Our server did not. She relied on her notes and had to go back to the kitchen several times to confirm what could be substituted to make things gluten free, this after leading with "Our Chef, Gavin Kaysen, is gluten free, so virtually the entire menu is." Hmm. -The difference in portion size with our two entrees was astounding. The Wood Roasted Chicken and side was at least three times as much food as the Bacon Wrapped Monkfish. I'm not sure whether this was intentional, but I had to end up sharing part of my food with the girlfriend to ensure she had enough to eat. (I still had enough to eat, so it was all good). -The Salsa Verde that came with my chicken was simply not good and a complete miss for the dish. I kept finding myself looking for either some heat or sweetness at the end of my bites and found neither. I think Gavin was trying to do something different here and I applaud him for trying, but I would go a different direction in the future with the sauce. It needs either more sweet or more heat. -The price tag. This seems to be either ignored or not deemed relevant in other reviews, but I think it was the deciding factor in my not giving a higher review. Just check the menu yourself online and do some simple math. I'm not saying the prices should be cheaper (it's in line with the type of joint Spoon and Stable is), yet for those prices you should get more (at least that's what I thought based on my experience). I'll definitely be back here since I love the atmosphere and know the menu changes. I think our experience was a bit of an aberration and I know our expectations were high, but they should be for a place of Spoon and Stable's reputation and caliber. In closing and to be perfectly honest, I think Spoon and Stable is getting some of the 112 Eatery treatment, i.e., people feel obligated to rate highly and praise because of hype, reputation, and the fact that it's become one of those coveted "now" spots / places to be and be seen. That's not to say Spoon and Stable isn't an excellent restaurant and won't win accolades (I'm sure Mpls Eater has already made it a lock for 2015 restaurant of the year). I just think people aren't as critical as they could be and ignore aspects of their experience that aren't positive. read more

I had a wonderful dinner here with a friend while I was in Minneapolis on a work trip. We tried the creamed spinach with cheese curds (yummy, as you might imagine) and I had a small portion of the black spaghetti with seafood. The pasta was fantastic and a generous portion! I'm glad I didn't get the full portion, as that would've been waaaay too much. For dinner we split a corn sundae, which was a perfect celebration of late summer corn: corn ice cream, some kind of candied/freeze dried corn, plum compote, and probably some other delicious corniness I'm forgetting. Just delicious. The service was very friendly. It was almost too fast--the main dishes came out just as our (supposed to be) pre-dinner cocktails arrived. Not how I would've wanted them, but the cocktails were excellent, so no complaints. We managed to snag seats at their garage table, which is first come, first served. But the place was pretty packed on a Thursday night. Highly recommend! read more
