If you're in Springdale, do yourself a favor and head to Spotted Dog. This was easily the best dinner I had all month. I came here for a birthday dinner two weeks back after a thrilling day of hiking the Narrows and was thoroughly impressed. The duck breast I ordered was beautifully cooked and perfectly topped with a prickly pear gastrique. My party's dishes were all wonderful, too. I was especially impressed with the fact that the wild game meatloaf was not gamey at all. When we ordered dessert, we were so impressed that our wonderful server remembered that it was my birthday. My friend had only mentioned it in passing, and not fully directed to her, when we asked for a table! The creme brulee was delectable -- with the perfect spoon crack and burst of vanilla flavor -- while the lava cake was super rich, which made the side of berries nice. Couldn't have asked for a better mountain view either. Plus, while reservations were all booked, we got a seat as soon as we walked in around 7 p.m. during the summer season. If you're looking for food near Zion, this place will not disappoint. The food is excellent and worth the price of admission. It's pricey, but worth it if you're looking for good eats. This is a great dinner spot in Springdale, not only because of the beautiful view of the mountains in the outdoor seating, but also the affordable entrees made with local and seasonal ingredients. Overall, I thought the food was good for being near Zion, since amazing restaurants are not always expected near National Parks. Artichoke Dip w/ Pita Chips (seasonal appetizer): This dip was so creamy and delicious and I actually enjoyed the pita chips more than I expected. Red Trout: The fish was pepita encrusted and I loved the texture of the dish. The red trout tasted very similar to salmon to me, which may have been because of the color. I didn't really like how it paired with the rice, since it made the overall dish dry, but I thought the fish was great. Wild Game Meatloaf: Tasted like a typical meatloaf, but we were super intrigued that it had elk, buffalo, and beef. We came to The Spotted Dog restaurant for dinner on a Sunday night while visiting Zion. We were able to get seats immediately and chose outdoor seating. Both indoor and outdoor seating was available at the time we visited. The service was friendly and welcoming. My husband got the short rib, while I had the elk and bison meatloaf. I don't eat meatloaf very often, so this was a pleasant change, and I thought the meat went great with the sweet sauce. My husband liked his short rib, although I thought the quality was just good rather than amazing. We were visiting for my mother in law's birthday. If you want to sit outside in front of the restaurant it will be an additional wait with a reservation. Luckily they were able to accommodate our dietary needs. Half of our group was vegan and they ordered the vegetarian forage which was cooked with oil instead of butter to make it vegan. Loved the restaurant ambience, food and service. It caught my attention on my way out from Zion national park, it was full of lights and there were good number of customers. Since there was no network to check the rating, just thought of giving it a try with low expectations. For folks looking for parking in front of restaurant while full, do note that this is part of the lodge too and you can use the parking by the lodge. The service can be matched with white tablecloth restaurants, they're experienced. I only wish they could provide wifi to the dine in customers, since the signal is very bad in the area, both AT&T and Tmobile..but they declined to share. Anyway, all that apart, the food was great. The cocktails, the appetizers were slightly different from the other restaurants, positively. I had the southwestern chicken breast for main course , I usually am not a fan of a chunk of bland chicken meat, but the mango salsa tempted me to order it. It was scrumptious on the chicken. A bit pricy, but it's an OK place for a hot home-style meal. We ordered three entrees which were approximately $20 each after taxes: 1. Meat Loaf - This was about the only entree I recommend out of the three. The meat loaf had good flavor and went really well with the mushroom and gravy sauce. I wasn't a huge fan of the red sweet and spicy sauce but appreciated the different flavor profile. Potatoes were cooked with the right time for good texture. 2. Spaghetti w/ Meatball - The spaghetti was just so so. The noodles were a bit under cooked, the sauce was good but not enough for a to-go order (came in a plastic container), and the garlic bread wasn't that great (we actually didn't care to finish it). The meat balls were good but it didn't save the dish. 3. Trout - Appearance was great and looked promising. After the first bite though, we were a bit let down because it truly lacked seasoning. There was barely any "wilted greens" and only 2 black berries. The rice was really good though. But again, it did not save the dish. I would not recommend. The wait staff tried really hard to hard to do their very best, but not bringing requested condiments that were left off plates and not others, and not speaking up for everyone to hear (alternatively repeating it at the other side of the table) didn't leave a top notch impression. The toasted baguette was okay, the sauce was like a canned pasta/tomato sauce. For entrees we had the ahi tuna, shrimp pasta, and purses pasta. Everything was edible but nothing was worth finishing. The combination of ingredients with the ahi tuna didn't pair well and there were just too many different flavors. The addition of the peas and carrots seemed as though they were an afterthought. The purses pasta lacked flavor, as did the butter sauce. My husband said his shrimp pasta was just ok. Lastly, the service was equally mediocre. Not bad but also not good. First, the positives - Our services was very friendly and helpful; The Spotted Dog was clean and bright with a small bar area was pleasant; The bathroom were nice and clean as well; The presentation was done very well; The crab cakes were a hit and so was the molten Lava Cake ... yummy. The rest of our meals weren't bad, just not as great as the reviews led me to believe. I had the duck, which was a bit over cooked and dry. The roasted chicken was dry as well. I would have preferred some potatoes added to the lamb shank meal in addition to the petite vegetable side. We added a couple of glasses of red wine and a crème brûlée to round out our meal. (Unfortunately, the crème brûlée wasn't freshly torched/warm which is how I like it). The restaurant was busy with casually dressed park visitors, some large and some small parties. The walls are covered with pictures and baskets, adding a cozy feel. The food is more 'fine dining' and the atmosphere and decor is more 'casual nice'. Staff and service were pleasant, but not overly personable. The restaurant is very close to Zion park entrance and within walking distance of the Best Western where we stayed. We are so glad we chose this restaurant to have a dinner. It has multiple outdoor sittings with a mountain view. My husband ordered Lamb shank that was a perfection. I can't praise it enough, so highly recommended, I ordered hummus platter for my son which was again a very healthy and a delicious option for my seven year old it came with a salad and roasted whole garlic again very good.
