Great family style dining. Basic price is $18 per person which includes 2 "meat" entrees and 5 sides plus iced tea and choice of desserts. There are up charges for certain entrees, though. I have seen this place for a long time driving back and forth between Lynchburg and Appomattox. However after all these years I finally came here for the first time with a wedding party. I am so glad that I visited. They had plenty of parking space. I was pleasantly surprised by the simple yet unique decor. The Manager and Waitstaff were incredibly courteous and friendly. We were seated in a private area with lots of spacious seating. The Homestyle food was absolutely delicious. We had roast beef, fried chicken, mashed potatoes. mac n cheese, peach cobbler, hot chocolate fudge etc. washed down with sweet ice tea! Your typical exceptional southern comfort food! They kept bringing more food out as the plates started to empty. The only thing missing was a cot on the side where we could have taken a quick nap after the meal. Everybody in the wedding party commented how delicious the food was and how friendly the wait staff were. They kept checking to see if we needed anything. So this maybe the most undisclosed treasure in Lynchburg, or right outside Lynchburg. We had shrimp, ribs,and chicken along with Mac and cheese, double portion potatoes and gravy, slaw, sweet potatoes and not to mention the biscuits, yummmmm. Now I will say we liked the chicken more than the shrimp and the ribs, well they were good but they just tasted like ribs, my husband loved them, they were just ribs to me. But my husband has already planned our nexted menu when we go back, so those passing though and you locals out there looking for good food, give this place a try. On October 20, 2018, The Rustburg High School Class of 93 held our 25th Class Reunion at The Spring House Dining and Reception Hall. The owner, Rick, and his lovely wife, went out of their way to accommodate us after our first venue selection was affected by flooding earlier this year. The couple worked with us to provide the venue and menu selection that was within our advertised budget so we wouldn't have to contact our guests to ask for more, and they EXCEEDED our expectations! We were treated like royalty - from excellent food and service, to genuine southern hospitality, the staff treated us BETTER than family! Rick and his staff opened a private bar for drinks and dancing for our guests, and then we had the banquet room for our evening dinner. Such a beautiful location! Our menu consisted of delicious fresh tossed salad, chicken with dijonnaise sauce, roast beef and honey glazed ham, along with red bliss potatoes, fresh green beans, corn pudding, and macaroni and cheese. With rolls and butter! YUM! We truly cannot thank them enough for all they did for us. Not only was it a lovely venue, but they are beautiful people. Got the buffet on Easter Sunday, it was $25 a person and the food was not worth it. The selection was poor and the food was cold. Even if the food had been warm, it would remain subpar. For $25, like any reasonable person, I expect tasty food and Spring House did not preform. The green beans weren't seasoned, the roast beef was tough and chewy, the ham was cold and lacked flavor, and the Mac and Cheese lacked flavor, tasted like it was days old and was greasy. Even the salad bar failed to impress! The deserts were decent but nothing to freak out over. There are many options in the area for great food that won't cost you nearly as much. I recently had dinner at Spring House. The facility was great. Looked very nice and well taken care of. The service was excellent. Very nice and friendly service. The food on the other hand is very poor quality. Some of the sides looked to be homemade, but others were freezer meal style. Such as the chicken fried steak. The food reminded me of cafeteria food. But, with freshly prepared prices. I'd would recommend this restaurant for large parties, but nothing for a special occasion. I came to visit my parents from out of state, and they just couldn't stop bragging about the food AND service at Spring House Dining & Reception Hall. They were so right! As a server, it's hard not to have high expectations when dining out. Andy was everything I could only hope to be for my tables back home. Not only did he promptly provide what our family needed throughout the meal, but he was so personable as well. I love family style restaurants! As far as I know this it the only one in the area, and it is a great one at that. The interior is set up like a big house with multiple dining rooms instead of bedrooms. They have a great deck overlooking a pond with a water fountain. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and make sure that the dishes is always filled. The food is wonderful! Each dish is bottomless and is meant to be shared and passed around. Their friend chicken is one of my favorites and the prime rib is very good as well. This is traditional southern food. There are many sides to choose from, but the macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and green beans are my favorite. Each meal also comes with delicious buiscuts, cornbread and sweet tea. They have live music here on the weekends often and it is also a great place for events. The restaurant is a good ways away from the "city", but worth the drive if you have a group of people you want to have a fun dinner with. I am not sure what the price range is because thankfully someone else is always buying, but I am sure it is worth the price :) read more

The quick conclusion: Perhaps the "locals love this place" because it's the only place around. The Easter menu sounded good, and the pictures on their FB Page looked great (FALSE ADVERTISING) - the execution and professionalism were extremely poor. I will never go back, I hope we all don't get sick. The place is old, dirty, disorganized, cheap (but not priced that cheap $21.95/person for nasty brunch), and a huge let down. My suggestion - get better management, shut down for 2 weeks and clean, paint, refresh, and get an executive chef who can fix the menu. It could be cool - but is an undercooked potato currently. Save your money and buy Stouffer's or whatever - I'll let y'all know if we end up getting sick. The Story: We had family visiting from across the country, some were driving so I didn't make reservations in advance of today for Easter due to being unsure of ETA - first mistake. Second mistake, calling and making reservations at Spring House. Found the menu on their Facebook page after much googling and placing phone calls to other establishments - they were all booked - however, upon calling Spring House I was hopeful after a nice man answered and said he had room for the 6 of us at 5:00 - and again, I mentioned the menu - I looked decent. I also looked at the pictures on their Facebook page, all professional and great looking - almost too good to be true, but again, this is a repetition venue, so they much be good... Third mistake - assuming the photos were real and not stock internet pics a obviously they turned out to be the later. When we arrived I immediately bristled - carpeted floors, dated décor, plastic table clothes and messy disorganized "service stations..." oh, and I had made a reservation for 6, when we walked up to the CASH REGISTER 4th warning sign... the lady asked how many and immediately started walking to seat us...I said the reservation name and number - no way she took that down...were they actually taking reservations? She tried to seat us in a corner table with mismatched chairs (we were the third table to arrive out of at least 40...I asked to sit at a round - she had no issues...good, right? Welllllll I sat facing one of the disastrous service stations with pitchers of iced tea scattered upon it - first thing I see is an older waitress who I later came to the conclusion was either on speed or tweaking out, FIST A PITCHER OF TEA WITH HER BARE HAND AND GRAB ICE CUBES AND SHOVE THEM INTO ANOTHER TEA THEN WIPE HER ARM ON HER PANTS. Like literally - I was starving then not hungry at all...in an instant. Our server was a sweet girl who was trying really hard, and doing a good job. But then I saw an older guy, drinking out of a blue solo cup...who appeared to be the owner, give her shit - all happening and the "service station" I wanted to say something - but I had in-laws in town and didn't was to cause an issue. Long story short - one of the weirdest experiences, felt like I was in a bad movie. The food was gray, over cooked, mushy...except for the halved red skin potatoes that lacked any seasoning and were under cooked - seriously, who screws up potatoes??? I didn't eat the chicken, which apparently was my 5th mistake because the word was it wasn't half bad. The ham slices were floating in syrup, beef in beef broth, vegetables hammered and "salad bar" items looked like they'd been sliced with a machete. The only thing that was remotely tasty was this "eclair cake" it was pretty tasty - but looked like something served at a summer camp. Perhaps the locals love this place because it's the only place around. The first thing I would like to note is that upon visiting reviews for this page a few weeks ago, there was at least one other review that reflected my own...where did it go, I wonder? Secondly, the wait staff (at least one of them) is very cool and the entertainment is very cool. Here's the deal: if you order just fried chicken you get to choose five other sides for $12.99 plus dessert and a drink you pay for. If you get chicken and one other entree, it's a dollar more but if you get 2 entrees that are not chicken it's $15.99, per person, and everyone shares. You get unlimited refills of everything. We ordered the beef tips. The first round came out, then the second round. I took a few pieces on the second round as I was still eating fish on the first. One piece was decent, the second was pure fat and gristle. Then on the third round the waitress informed us that they were "all out" of beef tips. I've never managed a restaurant nor owned one, but on a night that you've advertised and have entertainment, wouldn't you make sure you've stocked your kitchen? Also you should probably make sure your chairs aren't falling apart and that when one of your lady patrons turns on the faucet in the bathroom it doesn't vomit a spray of hot water directly onto the front of her pants. The waitress, realizing there was a service issue, spoke to the owner, who never once came to our table, nor any other customer's table as far I observed (I learned a bit later that we were not the only disgruntled customers). I have been to many, many other restaurants in which, if the service or food is bad, the owner or at the least a manager will come to the table to hear out their customer. I was disappointed by this behavior. I don't intend on criminalizing this gentleman but in order to run a successful business your customers have to be happy. If you have to absorb the cost on one occasion, if you're polite and gracious, you may earn that money back on another occasion. The party I was with have been customers before, multiple times. I don't understand the cold and ungracious behavior. Furthermore, if you only want a certain kind of clientele, fine. I prefer to go to establishments in which they prefer the kind of clientele who have money and pay for things. The waitress, who obviously sympathized with us, offered something else (the ribeye--which was dry and awful) and as far as I know, did so on her own compassionate time. Apparently gratuity is not part of the deal either, which means the owner treats his staff much like his customers. I get the impression that the only customers this owner prefers are gray haired patrons that attend their Methodist church every Sunday and Wednesday. read more

After many years of driving by the Spring House, we stopped and had dinner. It was FABULOUS!!! My husband & I are just sorry we waited so long. We chose to eat outside on the beautiful deck this fall evening. The view was lovely and our sever even went down by the pond and turned on the fountain. We chose to eat the fried chicken and country fried steak as well as corn pudding, green beans, sweet potato casserole, fried apples, and mashed potatoes. Andy, our server, brought the 2 entrees and sides out on a lazy Susan. All of the food was delicious and perfectly cooked!! The service was exceptional!! Visited here tonight with my daughter and son as part of our visit to Lynchburg college. We had a very pleasant meal with a singer who sang like one of the old Sinatra style singers. It's family style so you choose two mains. We had oven fried chicken and Virginia BBQ and then you choose 5 sides. In addition it comes with fresh biscuits tea and dessert. I bookmarked this place and just getting a chance to write the review. My husband, myself and newly 11 month at the time went here in January 6th. We wanted to try somewhere new. My husband really wanted to go Richmond, but I wasn't up for the drive at the time. We arrived around 6ish and there was one other table there celebrating a birthday. We ordered and I was immediately disappointed as the food came to the table, but I tried to remain open. The food was very bland and did not appear fresh. We had chicken and pulled pork. We didn't like the pork and didn't eat it at all. The food also appeared that it came out of a box - nothing that a chef is needed for. The Mac and cheese was some pasta with some cheese melted on the top, not actual homemade mac and cheese. The waitress kept disappearing and smelled like smoke. We could see her inside of the drink room and she used her bare hands to get ice. It was cold inside the restaurant. While we were eating they had a contractor come in and was all around our table. They were discussing with the owner the replacement of the ceiling tiles and and air coming in the doors (it was for sure!). We tried to make small talk with the waitress, but she wasn't friendly. We mentioned it being a slow night and she became very defensive about it being winter time. We informed her it was our first time. We didn't get refills on anything. It wasn't worth it. We paid and left. We never plan to return. Save your money. Maybe it's better on a busy when everything is fresh. I guess I should have listened to my husband and drove to Richmond to the family style restaurant he really wanted. This place is old, the carpet is old, it needs a facelift for sure! I was driving back to Richmond from Blacksburg and found the Spring House Family Restaurant along 460. It offers true family style dining. The customer selects two meats and five sides from the menu and they are brought out by the gracious wait staff. The food looks and tastes like my Grandmother made it. I had fried chicken and prime rib with green beans and whipped potatoes and gravy (I asked for only two sided because I knew I couldn't eat more and I was right) it was served on plates that looked like they came from the cupboard back home not from an institution. The Spring House is delicious! My fiancé and I stopped on our way back from a Virginia Tech football because we saw the signs along the road and we were starving. We recently visited this place as a recommendation from my husband's co worker at VCUHS. There were 4 of us on the group after we picked apples from Dickie Bros. The "personal Buffet" sytle was different but nice. The food was homestyle and delicious. We had oven fried chicken and the pork BBQ and 5 sides which were equally delicious. We did not realize we could get refills on any of them..........our bad..... Now the desserts were to die for..........we had the chocolate eclair which unfortunately my husband devoured without sharing. Shame on him........I had the key lime pie- the best, my sister had the choc chip bread pudding with some glaze that was yummy.........my brother had the best one of all - the peppermint stick ice cream. I am glad we went and tried different things. I would have loved to sign up for their thanksgiivng dinner, but the distance is a factor- the only factor.......We will definitely go back if we're in the area. What an awesome surprise to come across the Spring House Restaurant on our drive today. We sat out on the lovely deck and were immediately greeted by the owner. The menu was fantastic. We had the family style service with the roast beef, fried shrimp and the catfish. All 5 of the sides we chose were fresh and delicious. The deal they offer comes with tea as well as dessert. I had the chocolate eclair cake and it was marvelous. The owner came out after dinner and wanted to make sure we were pleased with the meal. For years I have passed the Spring House and always intended to stop in for dinner. Today Mother's Day, My husband and I decided to take my mom, and mother in-law to dinner. My sisters and brothers and their families also attended. When we arrived , nobody greeted us or explained the check in process, as we had a reservation. The gentelman, who we assumed to be the owner, continued to ignore us until we asked what the check in process was.He did say he would be with us shortly. Finally after 30 minutes he addressed us and told us to follow him, he hurried off and 12 of us stood confused because we had no idea where he had hurried off to. After a few minutes he came back and pointed to the corner table. The food was not at all like "grand-ma " cooked it. Unless the usual chef/cook was off. Nothing was seasoned, the green beans were definantly canned beans, the prime rib advertised on the meu was replaced with roast beef, not the same. The lump crab cakes, one of my favorite foods, was served with tarter sauce,yuck.The childrens buffet was the high-light of our meal, my granddaughter loved it, she's 4. Everything was cold. The deserts were put out a little at a time. We were not satisfied at all. Our waitress was quiet but efficient and quietly friendly. Upon leaving , the same rude man told us that we couldnt seperate the check so we needed to pay together, if possible. It was not possible. After each transaction, he made the same statemet that "gratuity was not included' and we needed to take care of the tip. I made the same statement as well, "sir we already took care of the tip, we left it on the table". He was just not nice or gracious. We will not go there again. All our family are out of the area so rather than fix Thanksgiving dinner just for two of us we decided to give their Thanksgiving buffet a try. Bad decision. Every item on the buffet was clearly pre-prepared institutional food. Even the salad was the pre-bagged type. The turkey, stuffing and gravy were very bland, no taste at all. The fish offerings were either under cooked or over cooked and looked rather gross. The dessert pies were cheap store bought items. The only item I can say was good was the mac and cheese. Worst Thanksgiving meal I have ever had and over the years I have had several Thanksgiving meals in Navy Chow Halls that were significantly better than this. Don't waste your money. read more

We've been wanting to try the restaurant for a long time, and we finally got the chance. We stopped in for Sunday lunch and we all enjoyed the great food, the atmosphere, and the friendly service. The food was excellent and if you like good bar-b-q and well prepared food, this is a great place to go. We want to get back there again now that we know that our trip is well worth it. I ate there once and will never go back. The family style is a good idea, but nothing like the HOMEPLACE in Catawba, VA. They offered a salad bar, before ordering, I went up and looked at it. The salad dressings were not on ice, they were just sitting on the counter. We did not get it. We ordered chicken and prime rib. The chicken was raw and the prime rib was the worst I have ever had. The gravy was cold as well as the mashed potatoes. The server did her best to solve the problems, but the other chicken and prime rib did not make things better. Several weeks ago our party of four went to Spring House for dinner because a friend was providing the entertainment.The menu states $14.00 per person; waitress told us $20.00 per....& could not tell us what the additional $6.00 was for. The owner needs to find another occupation as he thinks vegetarians such as my wife & I eat chicken; The menu lists about 10 beer choices. It took me 5 tries to get a beer that they were not out of. The food is at best, only mediocre. The menu is dated & complicated to order from.I have eaten in many restaurants in this state, country, & abroad & this is absolutely the worst I have encountered. I made reservations for dinner in February for today at 4 pm for my daughter"s college graduation. We have eaten here many times but I was so disappointed today because I was expecting family style dining and they had a buffet that was so substandard that I will probably never go or take other people there and I had a party of 12 adults, 3 children, and 2 babies today. We take a lot of people here and recommend it highly until today. The meat selections were awful and the rest of the food was so bland and didn't have much taste..I wished we had been told at either of the 3-4 phone conversations we had prior to the actual meal that it was not family style so we could have gone somewhere else. 4- STARS ****We visited the Spring House on Sunday afternnoon on our way home from Lynchburg. We were set at a table where you could see the deck and the view outside by a very nice Lady. (perhaps the owner) who greeted us kindly and went over the menu stating our waitress would be with us shortly. We ordered our drinks and food which was served on a Lazy Susan; two meats of our choice, and five sides. The food was served quickly and was delicious (could have been a bit warmer) the waitress kept our glasses full and was very kind. The owner approaced our table and greeted us and chatted a few minutes. Of course, we needed boxes to go. We loved it and will return, maybe on our next trip to Lynchburg. read more
