First time here today. I got the single order of fish and chips. I believe it is cod. It was good! Very moist. And the breading/coating/whatever wasn't too greasy or dense (not that I'm a fish and chips expert). The tartar sauce was good. The fries were kind of soggy and thick, which I don't like, but whatevs. I think next time I'll just get the fish. The garlic vinegar sauce I used was soooo good (my mouth is watering). My fiance got the buffalo shrimp. It's just shrimp tossed in buffalo sauce. It was good. He really liked it. He also got fries with his meal and we had way too much fries for the both of us. I also got a cup of clam chowder. I didn't like it at all. It tasted like mashed potatoes and I hate mashed potatoes. But I had to try it. I will be back one day when I'm craving fried fish. I think I'll just stick to the fish tho. We didn't have to wait long for seating, but I bet it is hard to get seating during the summer. Luckily the park is right there. Great location. Its fish and chips... I heard great things about Spuds, but it turned out to be not as great as everyone had said. The place was REALLY slow, with 3 people working but only one kid running the fryer and making the food, the wait was unbearable. Also, since the food prep is out in the open, its kinda hard not to be a little disgusted of how everything is frozen and then just fried, not very fresh. I understand that this is how most fast food places work, but usually at places like McDonalds, you don't normally see all the workings of the kitchen. After waiting for almost 15-20 minutes for our food, we took it to go and took it home. The food was alright but nothing to rave about. Everything is completely fried so everything is pretty good but leaves you feeling gross in a greasy mess in the end. I got the oysters which were pretty good. Also had the scallops but left a gross feeling in my mouth as water just squeezed into my mouth as I bit into the pre-frozen scallop. It's fried but oh so good. Today was great day to visit Spuds in Kirkland. I have been eating here for over 4 yrs, it has been around for over 35 years! They must be doing something right. We ordered the shrimp, single halibut and chips, cole slaw. For some reason today's fish was some of the best I have tasted from this location. The shrimp came out plump, tender with a crispy coating. The Halibut was moist and crispy. It was hot, tasted fresh, as for the cole slaw, delicious. I recommend almost anything on their menu. As a first time customer, Midwestern transplant ,and seafood skepticist; I found the food quite tasty. The fish was extremely thin and doused in breading. The tartar sauce was thick and creamy and the ketchup was Heinz. The fries were a bit disappointing, but they were fine after being dipped in ketchup and leftover tartar sauce. So as a Midwesterner this was delicious. Unfortunately I have been here long enough to know that this food is one step above a filet o fish from McDonalds. Will I be back? Yeah, absolutely. We wanted to eat fish and chips before we left Seattle, and it worked out that we could try Spuds! Overall, it was good. Fried fish and french fries are always good. We got it to go and ate it at our hotel about 15 minutes later, so that may have affected the food. Fish - a bit on the salty side, I think it's because the fish is sliced thin. it was very very oily, which makes sense, but it was just... a lot of oil. Hahaha Chips/Fries - good, thick fries, went very well with the fish Fried Calimari - also very very oily. more oily than the fish. but again, it's fried calimari, and it tastes good! wasn't too fishy or salty. OMG!!!! I am so surprised to see 3.5 stars for this fish place !! They have amazing fried fish !!! Love their halibut and the buffalo shrimp and their amazing array of sauces to go with it !! It is pricey but the flavor pays off!!! I have been visiting them for the past 15 years or so and never have I had a regret ! Whenever I go to Saint Edwards park with family we always take out fish from here and enjoy it on hot summer days !!! My family who visits from abroad love their fish also and always love to go when they are here ! Pretty lame service for the way they throw their tip jar in your face. Grab your own food, bus your own tables. I think cleaning your own table is in there too since everything from our seats to table umbrella stand was caked in filth. Actually visible filth, I felt gross leaving the place. Super good! Ordered a halibut with fries. The fish was super hot and crispy yet nice and flaky in the middle. Also it was seasoned so perfectly that I can actually still taste the fish through the crunchy coated breadcrumbs. At first I was worried that one piece of halibut was not enough for me (mind me I'm a girl with a big appetite) but to my surprise I was struggling a little bit to finish the last two bites of my fish and fries! This place was also a plus because it's next to the beach so you can enjoy your fish and chips overseeing the waters OR enjoy it outside on the benches across the sandy beach. Love it! Before I went to Spuds I looked at the reviews here on Yelp and decided that I should definitely give it a try since everyone says the food is so great. I thought maybe people were just being cheap when they said it was over-priced, but I found out that they weren't. I went with a friend and spent $25 on an order of cod and chips, an order of halibut and chips and some fried zucchini. I'm not a cheapskate when it comes to good food, but $25 bucks? I can get a couple beers, an entree and appetizer for that at almost any other casual place. As for the food. I have to say it was pretty good, but not amazing. I noticed that my zucchini tasted like fish, which wasn't great and so did my french fries. Not such a huge deal, but when you charge that much for food, you could at least have separate grease for non- fish items. Overall I was kind of disappointed. I went in thinking that I would get a great meal, but got an alright one and spent WAY too much money. read more

It is completely ridiculous that they would charge $8 for each piece of cod. $26 for a 3 piece, when it used to be about $12-14. A friend of mine was craving some fish and chips and decided to take me and another friend to Spud Fish & Chips he told us he'd take care of the bill, so i decided to get the most expensive thing on the menu which was the Halibut cost around $21.99 i was expecting a huge bucket of fries and fish alls, i got were 2 or 3 fillets of Halibut and grease soaked fries. The kid behind the counter asked if we wanted Ketchup or Tarter sauce and i asked for at least 3 of each,i didnt know they charged for that too. The food was decent, but really nothing out of the ordinary your better off going to Skippers or Ivars. I love Spuds but the Juanita location has some problems that are fixable. 1. Cook the fries all the way - both times in the last month we've eaten there they were hard in the middle and not cooked. Who is training and doing QC? 2. Agree with the recent poster about the temp of the oil. May need to be hotter. Check on the QC on the fish because normally Spuds is awesome. 3. For to-go orders, take the time to wrap them individually rather than bunch/wrap orders together so the food gets mixed together. Can you imagine if burgers, tacos etc from restaurants were just all wrapped up together as one? Haha come on. Tons of potential -- hope management and the team will improve it! My husband asked the girl behind the counter for a wet rag to wipe the table we wanted to sit at, and she made no attempt to come out and do it herself... seriously?! Even McD's has someone walk around and wipe tables. Food is overpriced and just so-so, everything is extra including cole slaw and tartar sauce. Fries/chips were better than many other fast food places but not a reason to come back. We'll Spuds, you really know how to drive a girl to insanity! I have to be honest, I have kept coming back here because it is really close, and honestly like other reviewers have mentioned, the food is great. The problem I have with spuds is the continual abuse, and even like a bad abusive relationship, this too my friends should come to an end. Why all the negativity about Spuds? We'll for one, they are astronomically priced. Its one thing when you are fine dining, but Spud's is fast food! To top it off, they charge you- yes CHARGE for the normal condiments you know the stuff you must have on your fish and chips, (like ketchup and tartar sauce) and that usual fast food chains (Ivars, even Long John Silvers...), offer for free! Here's the straw that broke the camels back though. I ordered a shrimp cocktail for $2.89 (almost double than Ivars), and it didn't even come with cocktail sauce! How can you even call it a shrimp "cocktail" without the "cocktail" part? Come on! To top it off: It came with more celery than shrimp. Don't believe me? I posted a picture to prove it! Spuds, you have done me wrong one too many times. I will never be back. I don't care how good your food is, or that you apologise after you punch me in the face. No more! I used to love Spud & their halibut was the best around. I haven't been here in a few years but I was sick all week and decided to treat myself. What the heck is going on with this place? I got my usual 2 piece halibut & chips, a regular tartar sauce and a medium drink...for $20!?!? The halibut used to be thick which kept it juicy. Now it's thin and easily overcooked. And shoot, if you're gonna charge $7.95 PER FILET, can't you afford to give free sauce to your patrons? Nope, they charge you for your ketchup, tartar, refills on your soda...I'm surprised the napkins were complimentary. I think a simple lesson in economics is going on here as there were a half dozen high schoolers standing around waiting for orders to fill. As an update, I met a colleague for a business lunch today. The first thing I notice is that they are not relying solely on unsupervised teenagers. I go ahead and order the Halibut. I have to say the fish quality has mildly improved. The Halibut itself was a nice quality piece of moderate size. It was a tiny bit overcooked, but this to me was still an overall improvement in quality. My colleague agreed on his cod. You might think this would be a positive review, but alas it won't be. As I said, this was a sit down business lunch. After we had sat down for about 30 minutes, the fellow minding the counter comes over, snatches our trays up and asks us to leave. Mind you, its a nice day, the sun is shining and they do have more seating outside in the sun. I guess they thought it a bit cold. We left and finished our meeting standing in the parking lot. Empty parking spaces and in about 5 minutes, empty tables. Make your own conclusions, but I'm pretty sure I'm done here for awhile. Spud's just does not understand customer service and I see now why it does not filter down to the teenagers. That's hard enough all by itself, but when you don't have anything to teach in the first place, its impossible. May 2014, been eating here a few more times again. Good service, consistent food. As a child who grew up on Juanita Drive, Spuds was a constant espicailly during lent. Friday night after soccer, I thought it would be fun to take the family, there was 6 of us, to Spuds for dinner. I called ahead to make sure that they were open and what time they closed. We arrived at 8:32pm and was told that all orders had to be to go. I was shocked and honestly a bit put out. They assured me that they wrapped it and would be fine. Unfortuantely, I had done it before, and as well as they do wrap them, it's not the same when you get home. The fries are usually a little soggy and the fish loses it's crispness. I asked to speak to the manager, who then said it was and always had been their policy. Funny thing, he said 15 min before closing. By now, we had wasted 10 min. of time and it was 8:42. He then said that if we wanted we could eat there. REally? They were rude, uneducated on their policy's and totally unaccomodating. We left and went to Ivars. Great food, Great atmosphere and soooo family friendly. It's surprisingly very clean. When I think of fried food joints, I think of greasy counters and booths that you don't touch unless you've taken 3-4 napkins to. The non-greasy vibes translated amazingly well to the food. Yes, oil is used to fry the chips and fish, but an expertly executed napkin grease-test gave results that showed little to no greasy stains on a single ply of napkin. No joke. At no expense of flavor and texture, Spud's seemingly grease-less fried fish and chips were served piping hot. There was something uncomfortably un-American about having to pay extra for tarter sauce. But that minor expense was excused when the young man behind the counter came to our table giving us an extra piece of fish, admitting that the one he initially gave us was a bit lack-luster in size. Even though the g/f and I both thought the fish was a bit large and more than enough for the two of us, we graciously and thankfully accepted his grievance offer. read more

Avoid - Terrible! Expensive, my son ordered scallops - $9.50 and he got 6 scallops that were deep fried and the size of medium sized olives, no fries, I had to ask if it was our order because it wasn't recognizable as a scallop dinner. Chowder was tiny and expensive, not even made with cream but cheap corn starch, much worse than any canned chowder from Campbell's. My cod was $11.50, also small. They charge for tartar sauce but the high fructose corn syrup....er...ketchup is free! It's no wonder nobody was in here, should have known that few come back a second time. The total price for two was more than our usual full organic dinner at Whole Foods, and there we get way more healthier organic food. read more
