I am not a huge fish eater. I love this place though! I would pick it over Ivar's any day. I love the location too. While you eat if you stay you can watch the sunset over Lake Washington. Perfect place for a date! Since when you are done eating you can walk around the beach and watch the sunset. I love the garlic vinegar to put on the fish and chips. Everything there is fried. The boys that work there are kind and funny. I have not had a horrible experience with service yet. The cool thing is if you want to take the order home they wrap it up in paper for you to take home. Not such a good experience. More than 10 years ago I tried Spuds. At the time thought it was overpriced and inferior quality. Today I thought I'd give them another chance. Same experience, but worse. As the clerk slid the food tray toward me an entire piece of fish (fish and chips) slid off and hit the floor. I asked for another piece. A few minutes later it was done and I picked it up at the counter. Are you kidding me? The size was half that of the original, and overcooked. Rather than be assertive and demand a more reasonable portion I accepted it and right there committed to never return. Not in ten years, never. I honestly would way rather have great tasting food for a little bit more money than have crappy cheap food that tasted horrible. The quality of food has gone down hill. The clam chowder tastes like thick flour water and the fried zucchini was batter with green slime inside which must have been zucchini at some point! Arrived about 10minutes before closing and was greeted with a look like we're closed. They had the frying baskets up and asked without a smile "what do you want?" Ordered what looked like a small handful of fried clams atop some fries and a small drink with one tarter saucefor $14.00. I sat down to eat and the server said "we are closed and your order is to go." Would have been nice if told when I placed my order as it was raining out and had to eat in my car. I thought my meal was way overpriced for what I received and it was my second and last trip back. Spud only gets 4 stars and not 5 due to their lack of seating inside for "Big Guys" like me. I am the guy that orders the triple fish and tub of tarter for me....this is the place to get Grade A1 fried cod and chips. Garlic vinegar is a nice thing too. Simple- Great fish, good fries and superb tarter sauce that is not sweet but tastes more like a mayo/sour cream mix...delicious. Hungry for fish and chips the way it used to be around Seattle prior to the fancy restaurants, look no further make a run to Spud! Sadly I haven't been to Spuds in about 8 years. My last experience was near Greenlake. This weekend I took the opportunity to try this location out since my friend had just moved into the area and I remember their fish fondly. I had the 3 piece Cod and fries, my friend ordered the 2 piece(but was charged and got a 3 piece), and my wife had the buffalo shrimp and onion rings. The buffalo shrimp was basically fried shrimp with virtually no seasoning on it. I don't know if they did it wrong or it was supposed to be tasteless. The fish was a little over cooked but I still liked it. Fries and onion rings were as good as I remembered. The tarter sauce is great as well. The guy working the register was very bored and didn't seem to want to even bother to take our order. He also got our order wrong which didn't help the experience. Deep fried seafood! YES! These guys do it better than most. The fish is good, as are the oysters, scallops, and shrimp. The fries are decent, not excellent but certainly not bad either. Plenty of parking, although the dining space is not huge and can get crowded at peak tmes. read more

I think the food was nice @ the Kirkland location! I had Halibut & Chips. Mom had Shrimp & Chips. We shared Fried Mushrooms, which were yummy. Tartar sauce tastes different, not bad, just different...not as tart. The malt vinegar bottles need a good cleaning. They were kinda oily on the outside. This was our first visit to "The Spud" in many months. We ordered a Triple Cod & Chips ($18.25), Two milkshakes ($8.30) and a small Tarter ($0.40). That comes to $26.95 before tax. I can guarantee that the competition will sell a three piece Fish & Chips plus two shakes for much less that $26.95. I doubt we will ever be back! As far as establishments serving fish and chips avoid this place. The fish is just mediocre (both the cod and halibut), and definitely forget the ordering the scallops. They are bland/tasteless...they pass them off as sea scallops but I think that they are simply farmed Chinese bay scallops. And all the food is way-overpriced. Avoid this place. The staff was friendly and efficient. It ticks me off to pay extra for ketchup and tartar sauce (25 cents and 50 cents). Thankfully the water, napkins and disposal of the uneaten, very under-sized portion were free. The fries do rate a 7 on the 10-scale...which is the most I can say. I am wondering how long it will be before the owner's will be charging for the use of toilet paper... Until they get their act together avoid this place and get your fish fix someplace else! read more

I hate to be the one to say "The Emperior Has No Clothes" but the fish was just plain awful. First, I've never seen such thin, flat fish -- ever. I'm not kidding when I tell you it was literally flatter than a pancake. I had even spent the extra bucks for the Halibut only to get dry, rubbery, tasteless fish. I was a little shocked that a place specializing in fish could serve something so poor. I felt ripped off that I spent nearly $15 for two halibut fillets -- it might as well have been the cheapest bottom-feeder fish for all the difference I could taste. I would have asked for a refund but I didn't have time to stand in line again. There are so many other places with so much better fish that I would NOT recommend Spud's unless you're starving and they're the last place to eat for 50 miles.
