Great spot for some fast and piping hot fish and chips. Their tartar sauce is defiantly worth getting the bigger size. Believe me you will be glad you did. The one piece and fries was not enough for me. I recommend at least a two piece for a medium size appetite. Had the halibut and chips - was assured by server it was the best. Perhaps if I'd been repairing a wooden floor but not to eat. The fish came as three pieces - so substantial - but each piece was bone dry inside and had the mouth feel of compressed cardboard. A massive disappointment - and don't get me started in the breading - probably the only place in the world claiming 'best' fish & chips that doesn't have a delicious light batter to back up the claim. I'm not a Seattle resident, but I come up this way from the SF Bay Area with some degree of regularity to visit family. Perhaps the one place in West Seattle most frequented by me and my family is Spud. Spud is a legitimate fish and chips spot at a great location on Alki Beach. Definitely worth a stop! During our most recent visit, our group ordered lots of clam chowder, halibut and chips, clam strips, fish (cod) and chips, and polished things off with chocolate milk shakes. The halibut and the chowder were great--and the shakes were pretty solid too. I would argue that Spud makes one of the better clam chowders around the Seattle area. Coming from SF, a great chowder (with sourdough) is not a difficult thing to find at home. However, I really love a place that has great fish, chips, and chowder--and this place definitely fits the bill! If there is a criticism for Spud, I would say the fries are a little on the soggy side. However, it's a great place to go whether you're there as a family or out on Alki with friends. I had avoided Spud's for a few years because of a bad experience. I gave it another go a few nights ago and had some great fish this time. I don't care for limp fries, but the 2 piece cod was enough to skip the chipps. The fish was firm and fresh, much better than the watery crap I had a few years ago. read more

Great fish and chips, not cheap but always good, the fries are good too. The breading on the fish is very unique and really works well with the firm white cod. I always buy extra tartar. My wife hates fish and says the chicken strips are good. I have been coming here for a long time. We enjoy the beach or a walk and then have lunch. They have their own lot and an upstairs dining room with a view. read more

My absolute favorite fish & chips joint! And the location is perfect, it's right across the street from Alki beach. Their fries are great and they can get very busy. When they're crowded it can get very hard to find somewhere to sit, but the taste makes up for it! read more

Growing up in S. King County, the special treat was Skippers Fish'n'Chips - amazing good New England clam chowder and consistently well-cooked fish. Sadly, bad times came upon Skippers leaving only a very few franchises of highly variable quality in the Northwest. Fortunately, we are left with Spuds on Alki. Founded in 1934, they've been cranking out good fish for year after year since...and their chowder isn't *bad*, just more the traditional New England clam chowder rather than the spicier NW variant found at Duke's or in Skippers of yore. The 85 yo approves of this place, as do I. Moderate prices, family friendly, and handicap friendly on the 1st floor. read more

Went to Spuds on Mother's day and the place was rockin with people but I still got my food fast and tasty. I always love their fish and chips but yesterday I saw something at Spuds that almost made me sick, some guy putting ketchup on his fish, yuck. I just reviewed someone review of the chicken strips at Spuds, really you purchase chicken at a seafood restaurant??? One comment for tha management, clean the bathrooms more often. Grew up in Seattle, moved to Tacoma thirty six years ago. Started looking for anywhere in Pierce County with fish and chips comparable to Spuds. Still looking. Would make the arduous trip any time if it ended with a three piece fish and chips at Alki. I'm writing this after just having a free Veterans Day lunch at Ivar's, which was also a big part of my Seattle upbringing. Ivar's is good too, but nothing matches Spuds. This is a great place to get some excellent fish and chips. The location is amazing, for it is right on Alki beach and you can eat along the water. The food is always good with perfectly fried fish. You can choose between halibut and cod. The chowder bowl is also very good and can be eaten out of a bread bowl or regular cup. OMG this is by far the best place for fish n chips! Love it Love it Love it. The place might not seem all that clean, i don't care, i don't dine in. But the fish is to die for. To be honest i haven't had anything other than the fish n chips, with tartar sauce and lotsa garlic vinegar, so i cant comment on their other food items. But the recipe has remained the same ever since i can remember as a young kid. I love it! I've had other fish and chips, and sure they've been good.., but still not as good as Spuds! As a native, I have fond memories of Spuds. Unfortunately on my last visit the dream was just a nightmare. Since there isn't a Spuds near where I now live and there are other, better F&C places en route to any Spuds, I won't return any time soon, if ever. I usually get Cod & Chips and/or Shrimp. The last time I went I got Shrimp. The fish and shrimp were good. The fries were cold and old--whatsup with that? The cocktail sauce was INEDIBLE; if they're making it, they need to get a classic recipe with tomato and horseradish. If they're buying it, get another brand--there must a hundred brands better than this sickly sweet, oniony, too-tomatoey with an off-taste. Just awful. Seriously, I couldn't eat it. It was so bad, I wondered if Spuds had changed hands. Somethings different, and it's not good. read more

Yes, a lot has to do with their location and parking lot, so I may be overrating them a bit. However, since on busy days, you can find a parking spot and eat really good fish and chips I am rating them high. The real surprise is the chicken fingers - very crispy and moist! Maybe I was craving some good old fried food, but it satisfied my hunger. The food comes out really hot, so be careful. The fish batter is crisp and the fish is moist (not over cooked) and the fries are natural cut and hot! I haven't tried the shrimp cocktail, poppers or clam chowder... The only negative is that it is a bit expensive for fast food, but if you don't eat this kind of food all the time then it's worth it. read more

Always delicious! I make a special trip to Alki to get my Spud's! I always got fish but made the mistake of trying the clams and chicken. Now we have to get all three! Its gets very busy on nice days but the staff is efficient and you can always call your order in. On nice days it's great to take your food across the street and eat at the beach. read more

Love this place. I got a two piece fish & chips and almost couldn't finish it. The pieces of fried cod they gave me were HUGE. The fries were ok. I wasnt a big fan of the tartar sauce they gave me. It was a bit too sweet for my liking. Spuds is all about location and convenience. You're right on the boardwalk to the beach. It's a nice spot to sit and relax outside or you can sit inside and go upstairs for the view. I sat outside because I had my dog with me and didn't want to leave him in the car. Overall, I would definitely come back here, but maybe just get 1 piece or no fries. It was a bit too much food for me. read more
