I enjoyed my first visit to St. Anselm this past Sunday. I had the banana and chocolate chip pancakes which was very rich and filling. My date had the burger. Which exact burger? That I'm not sure, as I didn't look at the menu. We also shared some biscuits which were yummy. It comes with pimento cheese (delish!) but you can substitute with jelly if you choose. We also had the cognac punch which comes in a punch bowl. Cute but weird. The bowl is so big and the table is so small I was nervous I would knock it over lol. Think of the serving as a pitcher. We had more than enough between the two of us. Our server Jackson was super nice and helpful. Only cons are parking in the union market area. While there is ample street parking and a large parking lot across the restaurant, it's so packed so you'll be looping around for a while. Also, the hostess isn't the best but whatever. Meh. BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: way too expensive for a flawed and mediocre experience. If you are in the mood for a great steak, I'd head to any Ruth's Chris in America for a superior steak and experience. If you are in DC then Le Diplomate or Brasserie Beck both have superior service, food, and ambience at a lower cost. -- AMBIENCE -- the decor is great, low key with low lighting but it's got a great feel. It is unfortunately too loud to easily converse. I felt like I missed 20% of what my table companions were saying. FOOD -- perfectly unremarkable. The steak was good, though very rare for "medium rare." Mashed potatoes were . . . mashed potatoes. Desserts tasted like they'd been store bought and refrigerated: my carrot cake was dry and stiff, as was my wife's chocolate cake. There was nothing that made me think "I definitely need to eat this again." My beer was presented to me in a tiny glass beer mug (maybe it was the child's portion?). SERVICE -- our waitress was generally great, and very pleasant -- though she forgot to order our oysters (they weren't on the bill, either, so no harm no foul). All the folks working there seemed efficient and pleasant, and they were very accommodating with our 14 month old in a high chair. PRICE -- Four people with drinks, dessert, a few sides and steaks: $400 with tip. This was not, unfortunately, a meal that was worth $400. As an example, the deviled eggs with crab provides 2 eggs, cut in half (so 4 pieces) for . . . $15. Yes, two deviled eggs for $7 per egg. Mashed potatoes = $10. St. Anselm: I had a unique experience at St. Anslem, trying out the Thanksgiving box. If you call in advance, you can pay around $100 for a Thanksgiving box for 2-- you pay via text, and then show up and pick up the food, prepared by their cooks. The food just needs to be heated up, and then it is good to eat. The box contained turkey and gravy, salad, collard greens, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and dessert which was two slices of pie. Pros: Food quality: The food was overall very tasty and fresh. I was definitely satisfied overall from a flavor perspective and genuinely felt like all of the items were made in way that was much better than anything that I could pull together. Collard greens: I want to devote a couple sentences to the collard greens specifically, because they were my favorite component of the meal. They were made perfectly and seasoned so well. I did find some pieces of meat in them (so vegetarians beware to remove those or avoid!) Convenience: Overall I found the process of getting this Thanksgiving box to be very convenient. I just called St. Anslem's in advance, ordered over the phone, and went to pick it up! Overall much faster than putting together a meal or even buying pre-made items in a grocery store, and exactly what I needed this year. Variety of food in box: The box contained a variety of items which paired well with each other and satisfied different flavor cravings-- savory, sweet, zesty, warm and comforting-- you had a little bit of each here! Cons: Portion size: I did feel that the portion sizes for each of the components of the meal could have been slightly bigger. I ordered the portion for 2, and we are small people that don't generally eat huge servings. We both felt that the food provided would almost fill you up, but not quite. To make sure we were full, we had purchased some really nice bread, and some additional dessert items, to complement what was in the box. I don't think this box will leave you with too many leftovers, which is ok-- just worth noting. Other: Momentary mix-up with payment-- make sure to screenshot receipt . When I arrived to pick up my box, there was no record of me having previously paid-- the payment is done through a system in which the restaurant texts you a link leading to a payment page. I paid before showing up to pick up my box, and there was a moment where they could not find record of my payments. They had me sit down and looked around a bit and then handed me my food, after I showed them my bank statement which showed payment to the restaurant a few days before. The payment system that is used for the thanksgiving box process doesn't seem to email you a receipt, so I would recommend that you screenshot the confirmation of payment page after you pay-- I did this but had accidentally deleted the screenshot-- and it would have come in handy to have that! read more

A great dinner spot! I had the Hemingway Daquiri to drink and loved it, it was a great drink with lots of flavor and not too sweet. To eat, I ordered the Butcher's Steak with garlic butter prepared medium. It was perfectly cooked, and evenly red with slightly pink edges. I chose this for my husband's bday because it was on several Best Restaurants lists, and it's in a neighborhood we don't usually go to - so something different. The ambiance is really cozy/cool and everyone is very friendly. The menu is mostly steaks (REALLY good steaks), although there were a couple of chicken and fish options. I like the atmosphere here. It's large but cozy and I love the pics of the presidents and the lights. My friends and I decided to try the steak here. Who doesn't want a 47oz steak? It looked impressive and was cooked really well (meaning great, medium rare) and was tasty. Oddly, the stars of the meal were the delicious biscuits, complete with the most flavorful pimento cheese. One of the new restaurants that opened around the Union market. Their specialty is mostly steak which is why I visited this place. We reserved it on a Sunday evening which they had availability compared to other days. The service here is very smooth and we were very happy with our host and waiter. The host accepted our request to sit in one of the booths which we liked better than the table. Each booth has a paining and a light bulb in the middle which created some discussion in our table and why the bulb was in the middle of the head. The whole lighting and atmosphere of the restaurant is very good and creates a cosy environment for a peaceful dinner experience. That was the first thing that we noticed and I believe this is one of the pillars of having a great restaurant. For the food we ordered some starters. We got the Salt Roasted Baby Beets and Charred Okra. Both were very different and delicious. The Baby Beets were going very well with the Whipped Ricotta and created a mild combo which was going well with the bread that came with it. The Charred Okra was good and the herb Mayo with it was enough spicy and flavorful. Giving both taste and the required kick. We all liked these appetizers. For the main dish we decided to get two steaks with sides and share it between the 4 of us. We got the Butcher's Steak with garlic butter sauce and the prime Ribeye. Both of the streak were good but personally I liked the butcher's steak better. It was a smaller cut but the sauce was going better with the steak. For the sides we got Butter Lettuce Salad and Grilled Broccoli. I would say both sides weren't that great. The Salad was very creative but it was lacking the taste. The broccoli unfortunately didn't have any seasoning and we barely finished it. I should also mention the presentation of the food and the silverware were very nice. We really liked our plates. For the dessert we got Ice Cream cake. It was a good dessert for the value but nothing exceptional. The best meal we have had in a long time. The place was packed on Monday evening ( May 2, 2022), we didn't have a reservation ( who would think of one for Monday?) but got an outside table right away. The food menu is quite short but everything looked good. We followed advice of fellow Yelpers and ordered devil eggs with blue grabs as a starter to share ($15). There are four pieces that are plenty for two people. Delicious. For the main course I had a whole grilled branzino ( my favorite fish) $32 , it comes as a whole fish, you need to de-bone yourself, perfectly grilled , the portion is huge, you can easily share. My partner had butchers stake ($34) medium rare. It was perfectly cooked , he is still raving about it the day after. Perfect option size. Both fish and meat come without sides that you ordered separately. We had creamy spinach $10 ( lovely, creamy but not heavy) and an endives salad $14 ( from the salad menu) . Endives salad with walnuts was excellent - fresh and crispy with just a touch of light flavorful dressing. Was perfect to go with the stake. The chef also sent us crispy finger potatoes that were addictive ( with a rich mayo-based dipping it is not a healthy option if u are concerned about to calories). We also ordered deserts and it was a deadly mistake - the portions were very large but so delicious that we couldn't leave any on the plate. I've cream cake $11 ( you can easily share) and a Scoop of the Day $6 ( one scoop of raspberry sorbet that was a very large ball but absolutely delicious- and I normally don't even like sorbet. This one tasted and smelled like fresh raspberry berries, not an artificial flavoring, it was not too sweet, just perfect. Ice cream cake has Mini Oreos on top and crashed Oreos basis , frozen whipped cream on top of vanilla ice cream layer. Drinks menu is a whole book, for those who are intimidated by its volume have two options ( choose house beer/cider/wine option from a short version of one pager, or to ask for advice of in-house sommelier ). My hubby took me here for a nice casual bday dinner. Been wanting to try this place, glad I finally got a chance. It was quite busy at 9 pm on a Friday. Overall, the service was hmm confusing? Ah, the places my sister in law takes me in DC are great. This one was definitely one for the books. As usual, our food adventures started out as where to go and eat. And after listing several options for me she made the decision to come here because she hasn't had it in a while. That was a good enough reason for me. Coming in, the decor is pretty much a steak house/country/rustic/barn house. I think those descriptions gives you a good idea on what it was like when you walk in. SIL had reservations so we got seated pretty quickly. One tip: make sure you have reservations. I believe SIL stated that this place is always busy and if you come in on a whim, good luck finding a seat. So what did we get? As starters we got the tabboush salad and the asparagus salad. They both were wonderful. The asparagus salad had this sour type of taste to it, but it was more on the side of balsamic type of sour. The tabboush salad was alright, nothing too excited, it was just there to accompany the meat that we were going to eat. The main I ordered was the lamb sirloin. And it was definitely a great pick. Even though there were limited pieces of it, the damn meat was so succulent and moist. I would also say that it was really tender and it sort of just melted in your mouth. The garnish on top was a perfect way to top it off and the sauce was great. For dessert, we ordered a lemon meringue pie and shared it. The dessert was great. Not too sweet and made me want to go back in for seconds. Overall, if this place is on your list to try out, you won't be disappointed. Be ready for some nice cuts of meat. Look, I'm down for any place that serves delicious eats, but a bad attitude dampens all of it for me. The host (Caucasian dude, tall, ponytail) had an attitude when we asked to move to a table with shade (the sun was blazing, and our little one was miserable). The waiter for that area (upper deck) wasn't happy about it (insert more attitude). Thankfully we had a different waiter once we moved (lower deck), and the monkey bread we ordered helped. This restaurant is part of the Starr Restaurant group (Le Dip in DC and Pastis in NYC and now newly open in DC). These restaurants are notoriously known for reservations being booked up early. Le Dip is a cult classic in DC while Pastis is a cult classic in NYC. There's also a St. Anselm in Brooklyn which New Yorkers refer to as the hidden gem compared to the more famous steak houses. We went on a Tuesday night at 6:45PM. There's free parking up to 3 hours, $15 after/all day at the Union Market retail Parking Garage (be sure to only pack in the Retail parking area as this garage is shared with an apartment). Upon arrival to the restaurant, we checked-in and were told to stand by the crowded bar to wait for our table. There is an open kitchen with seating lining the kitchen, booth seating and tables, and tables with roped curtains along the wall. For a weeknight, it was busy but there were a few empty tables that weren't reserved and bar/kitchen seating that I believe are first-come first-serve on busier nights. After some time, we were seated at the booth tables next to the kitchen so we were able to see everything that came out. For food we ordered the Biscuits ($14 for 4) and Salmon collar ($22) to start. The biscuits with pimento cheese were dense and buttery on the inside which contrasted well with the crispy exterior. The pimento cheese was good but nothing special- although I liked that the biscuits came with pimento instead of something generic like butter. I wouldn't say these biscuits are overhyped, because they are good however I think they could have been a complimentary starter. The salmon collar was huge! The skin was perfectly crispy and the salmon melted in my mouth. It definitely needed the grilled lemon to cut the richness of the dish. For our entrees, we ordered the 16 ounce Ribeye ($55), 18 ounce Prime T-bone ($61), Mashed Potatoes ($12) and Creamy Spinach ($13). The steaks, PHENOMENAL. I think the best steaks we have ever had and my boyfriend has gone to all the fancy steakhouses in DC. The steaks were so well cooked. It had the perfect sear- tapping on the crust on the steak with my fork was just like the ASMR sound from breaking the burnt sugar on top of a creme brulee- while the steak itself remained so tender and perfectly pink/red. For a fattier cut of meat, the fat of the rib-eye was rendered down well, even the tendinous parts were cooked down and easy to cut through with their fancy opinel knives. The mashed potatoes were similar, a crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy inside that was infused with truffle. The creamy spinach was decent as well. If we asked an AI generator for pictures of what a traditional American Steak House would serve, they would show all of these yelp pictures. In terms of service, our waiter was very kind and my water glass was never empty. The service was more on the chill side and for a restaurant that did charge more on the higher price range, I did expect service that just read my mind (for example, since we were having both the salmon and biscuits for our starters, those two dishes didn't need to mingle on the same plate, I had a hard time tracking down our waiter to ask for additional dishes). But overall, they were very thoughtful and paid attention to the little things like labeling all our to go boxes so we knew exactly which items we had in the fridge. The ambiance is more casual than a traditional American Steak House like Rare//Capital Grille/ Ruth's Chris, with a more engaging, fun, loud environment and looser dress code. Overall, St. Anslem is a traditional American Steak House that has a small menu to allow them to focus on the quality of the dishes. They execute the textures of all the dishes really well and which was minimally seasoned to really let the quality of the meats shine through. read more

I finally made it here on a random Thursday night thanks to losing another ill advised bet. I wasn't too upset about losing because I wanted to try this popular new spot. We made reservations just to be safe and were seated immediately upon arrival. The tavern was dimly lit and had a casual friendly vibe. The walls were full of off beat decor such as Americana and animal pelts. This counter culture hodgepodge somehow works. The bar was full of professionals conversing. No TVs to distract from human interaction which I appreciate. It reminded me of a classy ski lodge. Now on to the food... We started the night off with the monster prawn and blue crab deviled eggs which were delectable!! I ate really slow to savor each bite. My taste buds were jumping. There were only 2 fish entrees on the menu. I decided to order the day boat scallop app and a grilled carrot appetizer for my meal. My friend ordered the lamb shank. We were both pleased with the presentation and complex flavor profiles. I understand steak is one of St. Anselm specialties, but I would love to see at least 2 more pescatarian based options. I finally got to try this restaurant out for brunch and it turned out to be well worth the wait. I was able to get a quick seat in the bar area, and the overall service was excellent. Their brunch menu features a variety of options like blue crab deviled eggs, chicken sandwiches, omelettes, and several different steak options such NY strip and ribeyes. They also offer a few cocktail options and of course no good brunch is complete without the option for mimosas. I decided on trying the Cinammon roll monkey bread ($8), steak and eggs ($24), and the mimosa ($12). The monkey bread was very good and they didn't overdo it with the caramel drizzle, the mimosa was solid, well made, and the steak and eggs (which I substituted for egg whites) was the highlight, the butcher steak was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were very well seasoned. It was one of the top brunch experiences I've had in the DC area from a quality of food perspective and I'll certainly be returning to try out their dinner menu options. read more

Very much a no-frills, not your traditional frou frou steakhouse, but still carries high quality steaks just the same. Situated right in Union Market, there is plenty of free street parking around. The service was a bit underwhelming and our server really lacked animation (-1 star), but overall we enjoyed the food. The host forgot to come grab us from the bar when our table was ready, we had to ask them. Our server was pretty unhelpful in identifying dishes to try and lacked any excitement when asked if she liked what we chose. We ended up choosing a 77oz Ax Handle (tomahawk), buttermilk biscuits, and the pan fried mash potatoes. The biscuits are so delicious - buttery, flaky, and so good with the pimento. We made the mistake of eating too much of it and was already quite full when our steak came! Cooked to the perfect temperature with the perfect crisp on the outside, the steak just melted. Definitely recommend for non-overpriced good solid steak! read more
