You hear so much about this place online and we got lucky and found time to make it over here. We were easily able to secure an 11:30 AM Saturday brunch reservation the night before. Lot of seating both inside and out (sort of little house like structures for each table). We opted for inside to prevent sweating. The dining room was pretty large and we loved the decoration. Wish we could've sat in the booth with the curtain. We needed to try a bunch of stuff so we got the Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread, Buttermilk Biscuits, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Steak & Eggs, and the Thick Cut Heritage Bacon. For drinks we got the Gin Cocktail, Vodka Cocktail, Limoncello Spritz, and the Light & Herby Mocktail. The biscuits and monkey bread came out first. The biscuits may be the best I've ever had from a restaurant. Very flaky, super buttery, and a little crispy on the top. The pimento on the side really took it over the top for me. The monkey bread was very good, very gooey and also great to share. The pancakes, bacon, and steak & eggs took a second to come out but that was probably due to the restaurant starting to get packed about 30-45 minutes in. The steak was a perfect medium rare, had a good crust to it, and was very flavorful. The crispy potatoes were perfect but wish it came with a dip and the eggs were just runny enough for me. My girlfriend loved her pancakes but there was no way she could finish and turned into a meal for later (most of this meal did). The bacon was as advertised, super thick, and was almost like an Easter ham. The drinks were solid, no complaints. My favorite was the vodka cocktail, refreshing and bright. St. Anselm: a restaurant whose reputation precedes itself. However after over a decade in The District, I have yet to sit down there for a meal. So I booked a brunch reservation with a friend a month ago. The interior was a hip mixture of exposed brick, wood, and stuffed taxidermy. But enough about the decor, we need to get to the food. The biscuits. Why didn't anybody tell me about these biscuits? How did they get them so flaky? How did they get it perfectly buttered inside? These are questions I don't have the answer to. However what I do know is that the biscuits were the highlight of my meal, maybe life. The Butcher's Steak was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and was a great cut of hanger steak. The fries were ginormous stalks of potatoes, too large a cut for my tastes. However the ranch dip with dill more than made up for it. As soon as I walked in I was told it would be a 2 hour wait by one of the hostess. I was disappointed because I truly thought they took walk ins. I opened up OpenTable a minute later and found multiple seats..... I was seated immediately but I was very turned off here. The hostess who initially told me 2 hours said somebody must have canceled, you are a very lucky man. Or maybe you didn't bother to check for seating for a brother and just told me 2 hours. I know this is true because a couple with a lighter hue than me walked in after asking for seating and they checked for availability and sat them. I really should've left here but I was craving a steak. Now onto the drinks and food. Maybe I'm too spoiled from Jamaica but the rum punch used too much grenadine that outweighed the rum. 4/10. The cognac cocktail was delicious. 10/10. The steak I ordered was nice and juicy. 10/10. The biscuits were also very good. 10/10. My waitress was very sweet and I wish I got her name. Cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor, it left me wanting more. However, I would have appreciated a wider range of options for sides. I also feel like there should be at least one side to accompany the steak itself, vs everything being a la carte. The broccoli was not impressive, but the pan fried mashed potatoes were great! I was so excited to eat at St. Anselm yesterday for brunch. My first time there. The food was okay. I had the eggs your way with egg whites, toast, bacon and fingerling potatoes. The toast was as hard as a brick. And I asked for jelly to go with it. To my surprise jelly is a $2.50 up charge. I didn't know we had to pay for condiments for one slice of toast. The rest of the food was fine. The crab deviled eggs were so good. And we tried the monkey bread which my friend loved. She ordered the Denver omelette with extra cheddar and a biscuit as a side dish. For some reason it didn't come with the potatoes so we had to request those again. I'm willing to give them another try but only for dinner. Better brunch options elsewhere. Oh and I got stung by a bee. Be careful in those booths on the sidewalk please. The steak was good, though very rare for "medium rare." Mashed potatoes were . . . mashed potatoes. Desserts tasted like they'd been store bought and refrigerated: my carrot cake was dry and stiff, as was my wife's chocolate cake. There was nothing that made me think "I definitely need to eat this again." My beer was presented to me in a tiny glass beer mug (maybe it was the child's portion?). SERVICE -- our waitress was generally great, and very pleasant -- though she forgot to order our oysters (they weren't on the bill, either, so no harm no foul). All the folks working there seemed efficient and pleasant, and they were very accommodating with our 14 month old in a high chair. PRICE -- Four people with drinks, dessert, a few sides and steaks: $400 with tip. This was not, unfortunately, a meal that was worth $400. As an example, the deviled eggs with crab provides 2 eggs, cut in half (so 4 pieces) for . . . $15. Yes, two deviled eggs for $7 per egg. Mashed potatoes = $10. St. Anselm: I had a unique experience at St. Anslem, trying out the Thanksgiving box. If you call in advance, you can pay around $100 for a Thanksgiving box for 2-- you pay via text, and then show up and pick up the food, prepared by their cooks. The food just needs to be heated up, and then it is good to eat. The box contained turkey and gravy, salad, collard greens, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and dessert which was two slices of pie. Pros: Food quality: The food was overall very tasty and fresh. I was definitely satisfied overall from a flavor perspective and genuinely felt like all of the items were made in way that was much better than anything that I could pull together. Collard greens: I want to devote a couple sentences to the collard greens specifically, because they were my favorite component of the meal. They were made perfectly and seasoned so well. I did find some pieces of meat in them (so vegetarians beware to remove those or avoid!) Convenience: Overall I found the process of getting this Thanksgiving box to be very convenient. I just called St. Anslem's in advance, ordered over the phone, and went to pick it up! Overall much faster than putting together a meal or even buying pre-made items in a grocery store, and exactly what I needed this year. Variety of food in box: The box contained a variety of items which paired well with each other and satisfied different flavor cravings-- savory, sweet, zesty, warm and comforting-- you had a little bit of each here! Cons: Portion size: I did feel that the portion sizes for each of the components of the meal could have been slightly bigger. I ordered the portion for 2, and we are small people that don't generally eat huge servings. We both felt that the food provided would almost fill you up, but not quite. To make sure we were full, we had purchased some really nice bread, and some additional dessert items, to complement what was in the box. I don't think this box will leave you with too many leftovers, which is ok-- just worth noting. Other: Momentary mix-up with payment-- make sure to screenshot receipt . When I arrived to pick up my box, there was no record of me having previously paid-- the payment is done through a system in which the restaurant texts you a link leading to a payment page. I paid before showing up to pick up my box, and there was a moment where they could not find record of my payments. They had me sit down and looked around a bit and then handed me my food, after I showed them my bank statement which showed payment to the restaurant a few days before. The payment system that is used for the thanksgiving box process doesn't seem to email you a receipt, so I would recommend that you screenshot the confirmation of payment page after you pay-- I did this but had accidentally deleted the screenshot-- and it would have come in handy to have that! read more

A great dinner spot! I had the Hemingway Daquiri to drink and loved it, it was a great drink with lots of flavor and not too sweet. To eat, I ordered the Butcher's Steak with garlic butter prepared medium. It was perfectly cooked, and evenly red with slightly pink edges. For shareable sides we had the grilled broccoli and crispy potatoes. The ranch the potatoes came with was a star. The side were good overall. I tried my friends okra and really enjoyed it! I chose this for my husband's bday because it was on several Best Restaurants lists, and it's in a neighborhood we don't usually go to - so something different. The ambiance is really cozy/cool and everyone is very friendly. The menu is mostly steaks (REALLY good steaks), although there were a couple of chicken and fish options. We shared 2 sides, the broccoli and the roasted potatoes, and they were amazing. But the highlight was probably the homemade biscuits ;-) Highly recommend. I like the atmosphere here. It's large but cozy and I love the pics of the presidents and the lights. My friends and I decided to try the steak here. Who doesn't want a 47oz steak? It looked impressive and was cooked really well (meaning great, medium rare) and was tasty. Oddly, the stars of the meal were the delicious biscuits, complete with the most flavorful pimento cheese. One of the new restaurants that opened around the Union market. Their specialty is mostly steak which is why I visited this place. We reserved it on a Sunday evening which they had availability compared to other days. The service here is very smooth and we were very happy with our host and waiter. The host accepted our request to sit in one of the booths which we liked better than the table. Each booth has a paining and a light bulb in the middle which created some discussion in our table and why the bulb was in the middle of the head. The whole lighting and atmosphere of the restaurant is very good and creates a cosy environment for a peaceful dinner experience. That was the first thing that we noticed and I believe this is one of the pillars of having a great restaurant. For the food we ordered some starters. We got the Salt Roasted Baby Beets and Charred Okra. Both were very different and delicious. The Baby Beets were going very well with the Whipped Ricotta and created a mild combo which was going well with the bread that came with it. The Charred Okra was good and the herb Mayo with it was enough spicy and flavorful. Giving both taste and the required kick. We all liked these appetizers. For the main dish we decided to get two steaks with sides and share it between the 4 of us. We got the Butcher's Steak with garlic butter sauce and the prime Ribeye. Both of the streak were good but personally I liked the butcher's steak better. It was a smaller cut but the sauce was going better with the steak. For the sides we got Butter Lettuce Salad and Grilled Broccoli. I would say both sides weren't that great. The Salad was very creative but it was lacking the taste. The broccoli unfortunately didn't have any seasoning and we barely finished it. I should also mention the presentation of the food and the silverware were very nice. We really liked our plates. For the dessert we got Ice Cream cake. It was a good dessert for the value but nothing exceptional. Bottom line: I've had significantly better $200 dinners. The chairs for outdoor dining are uncomfortable after about 10 minutes. The "old fashioned" tasted like it was mostly simple syrup and cloves, and was too much of an artistic interpretation to be accurately labeled an Old Fashioned. I ended up ordering an extra shot of whiskey to try to help, but it was a lost cause - I was $39 into a drink I didn't enjoy. The grilled corn was way over-grilled. It was 3/4 char. In the Midwest, you'd lose all grilling privileges if you served corn like that. The bright spot was the wagyu steak. They did a great job with that. The pork porterhouse was a nice thick cut pork chop, but prepared pretty middle-of-the-road. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Service wasn't very impressive: nobody talked to us for at least 10min after we sat down, and she struggled to remember the basics of being a server. If you're trying to take your college girlfriend someplace expensive to show off your credit card, this is a decent spot. If you're familiar with great food and fine dining, you'll be underwhelmed. The best meal we have had in a long time. The place was packed on Monday evening ( May 2, 2022), we didn't have a reservation ( who would think of one for Monday?) but got an outside table right away. The food menu is quite short but everything looked good. We followed advice of fellow Yelpers and ordered devil eggs with blue grabs as a starter to share ($15). There are four pieces that are plenty for two people. Delicious. For the main course I had a whole grilled branzino ( my favorite fish) $32 , it comes as a whole fish, you need to de-bone yourself, perfectly grilled , the portion is huge, you can easily share. My partner had butchers stake ($34) medium rare. It was perfectly cooked , he is still raving about it the day after. Perfect option size. Both fish and meat come without sides that you ordered separately. We had creamy spinach $10 ( lovely, creamy but not heavy) and an endives salad $14 ( from the salad menu) . Endives salad with walnuts was excellent - fresh and crispy with just a touch of light flavorful dressing. Was perfect to go with the stake. The chef also sent us crispy finger potatoes that were addictive ( with a rich mayo-based dipping it is not a healthy option if u are concerned about to calories). We also ordered deserts and it was a deadly mistake - the portions were very large but so delicious that we couldn't leave any on the plate. I've cream cake $11 ( you can easily share) and a Scoop of the Day $6 ( one scoop of raspberry sorbet that was a very large ball but absolutely delicious- and I normally don't even like sorbet. This one tasted and smelled like fresh raspberry berries, not an artificial flavoring, it was not too sweet, just perfect. Ice cream cake has Mini Oreos on top and crashed Oreos basis , frozen whipped cream on top of vanilla ice cream layer. Drinks menu is a whole book, for those who are intimidated by its volume have two options ( choose house beer/cider/wine option from a short version of one pager, or to ask for advice of in-house sommelier ). Good food but terrible service. My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate his birthday. First, we had to wait over 30 minutes for our table despite having a reservation at 8:00. After we sat down, we ordered the biscuits. My boyfriend let our server know that he had an egg allergy and the server alerted us that he would double check with the kitchen for him. He let us know that the biscuits were egg free and we should be safe to enjoy them. What he failed to mention was that the pimento cheese that the biscuits came with also had egg in them. Midway through our meal, my boyfriend started feeling nauseous. He alerted the server that he was having a reaction and asked if he could double check that nothing had eggs in it. It took the server 15 minutes to get back to us and finally admitted it was in the cheese. The worst part of this all was that the server DID NOT CARE. He did not apologize or ask my boyfriend if he was okay. The item was not taken off the check and we didn't expect it to be but an apology would have been appreciated .... After giving St. Anselm another chance, we were satisfied with the results. To start, I think the restaurant was well staffed with attentive servers, hosts, food runners, and sommeliers. It is a well managed establishment with managers who care about the success of the restaurant and customer satisfaction. I believe this is a great mark of a spot that seeks to continue deserving the attention it attracts. We sat inside this time, as the weather decided to unleash misery. It is certainly cozy and well curated. I would say as the restaurant is fairly large and has a good amount of covers, it is naturally quite loud. I suppose the noise really can't be controlled unless they reduced the number of diners which would not be economically advantageous. When dining indoors, I think it is good to accept the concept it will be fairly noisy if you dine at peak hours. Onto the food, I still stand by my original opinion that the appetizers and sides are impeccable. The biscuits, grilled veggies, bacon, and creamed spinach were all divine. For our entrees, we had the Bobo chicken and butchers cut steak. They were both delicious and flavorful. Our wine pairing was equally as lovely. Overall, I will remember St. Anselm for having great service, efficient management, and appetizers that are amazing. Made a date reservation for this place on a Friday. My fave was the okra because it's amazing and the grilling and sauce was a perfect combo. We got the beets as well and I thought it was nice but average. My boyfriend got the butchers steak and I got the branzino which was a lot and would recommend sharing. Great food and cool location!! It's in Union Market. I had the crab deviled eggs - simply delicious! I also had the half-chicken dish. The chicken had a great crunch on the skin. It's an a la carte restaurant FYI. The grilled broccoli had a nice char. The pan fried mashed potatoes was a treat - crispy outside and creamy inside. But, I absolutely loved the collards!! The server was very knowledgeable and communicated about dietary restrictions. And they gave me cake pops for my birthday!! read more

We ordered blue crab deviled egg for appetizer, the cinnamon roll monkey bread was purely bliss, the pancakes were huge, the grilled broccoli and crispy fingerling potatoes complimented the steak well and the ribeye was flavorful.
