We met for brunch at this quant little place and had a great time. The food was great - but no liquor quite yet as they have just recently acquired their liquor license so was disappointed not to be able to have my Sunday Bloody Mary that I was looking forward to The breakfast Americana was simple but very good. The coffee was French pressed and strong - not necessary. They need to invest in a coffee maker if they plan to provide breakfast and keep the French press as an option for those that prefer it.*** The main complaint I had was their choice of rotating music (random, I realize that) but there was a specific song that came on which contained SEVERAL n-words and "kill the police" and I couldn't help but think it was a joke or mistake since the place didn't seem to be the type that would play that sort of music but, it played on all the way to the end and the manager seemed to not really care. ‍ read more

We came here for Easter brunch and it was... sufficient? Kind of in a sleepy area, so there isnt anything else around it. The food was very good, bit with smaller-ish portions. The service was really really good. I would say I felt like it was over priced, and I dont mind spending on food. This was just a little extreme. We will probably come back to try dinner, bit I can fairly say we weren't blown away. read more

How did I miss this little gem in my neighborhood? When suggested by my girlfriends for dinner one night, I kept looking at the map and wondering how this restaurant was not on my radar as I am a frequent visitor of both Patina and George and the Dragon. Then I realized it opened only a few short weeks ago with the masterful Steven Brown as chef. This restaurant harkens back to my best and strongest memories of a trip to Paris with my mother a few years ago. I sat there with my friends, drinking beautiful wine and watching the sumptuous dishes arrive and felt like I was in a Parisian cafe after an enlightening day wandering the beautiful arrondissements. The decor is spot-on. Every item that we sampled (and there were many) were all delicious. Among our plates were the Gem salad, the Tartare, the Pomme Frites (I can never say no to Pomme Frites), the Madame, Brussels and the Lamb (I dream of this lamb). All were delicious and I cannot wait to go back and try the Snails, which I heard were divine. I suspect that if you visit, you will find me at the bar with a glass of wine and a book as I will use this restaurant to meet my (as yet) unfulfilled desire to see Paris once again. I have not been to a place so loud since hanging out at a dance club. "What?" We had to SHOUT across the table of four to hear each other. And with that effort, it was difficult--no impossible--to maintain a meaningful conversation. So, instead of volleying stories of the past few weeks, we resolved to sharing pictures from our phones with shouted, abbreviated descriptions. Finally, about 10pm, it quieted down enough to talk. The long talks you expect to enjoy and cling to over food so delicious makes the food taste even better and the experience authentic. But instead we shared the food in silence surrounded by shouting. Next time I want to spend a bunch of money on dinner, I'd rather go to a less popular restaurant and actually hear my friend's voice. Or, perhaps they could install some kind of sound absorbing system because the restaurant is small and the is hardly any thing soft on the walls or ceiling. Do we as Americans idolize and romanticize Paris? You bet we do. Pretty sure it is absolutely nothing like Minnesota, and sometimes, that is exactly all what we want. To be far, far away - sipping on wine, under romantic mood lighting, lounging in cafe chairs, and feeling fabulously skinny and chic. Oh, just me? Well, this is what it felt like walking into St. Genevieve. On a Monday evening (in the first snow storm of the year, no less) this place was packed out. Like, I could barely fit my buns on a stool at the bar. No, we did not have reservations, and yes I realize how silly it is to hope for a table at any new hot spot in town. Luckily, after 20 minutes of perusing the menu and sampling a half glass of bubbly, the super friendly host mentioned someone had cancelled and our table was ready. Everyone we interacted with was like an old friend. For one, no one had on a uniform, a few of the waitstaff were seen drinking in-between running around delivering plates of French Nom, and everyone was laughing and joking with everyone else, worker & diner. I was impressed. This buvette (I hear this means a place for light snacking and drinking) had small plates under $15, and entrees under $25. I had the snails and pomme frites (both fabulous, although wasn't aware the snails came on bread, like an open-face sandwich). You can order your champagne (or sparkling wine, they will correct you!) by the glass, half glass, or bottle. The desserts looked wonderful, by the looks of the table next to us, as well as the Croque Madame. The Potato Pave was the fanciest spud I have ever seen, but crispy and pillowy soft all at once. The 'toilettes' were a wonder all themselves - top of the line candles and soaps, making me want to just hang out in there since my bathroom is nowhere near as nice. When the time came for the check, it was delivered with homemade salted caramels - a delight, leaving a sweet taste in my mouth as I lingered in the entryway just a bit longer, avoiding digging my car out of the snow. The next time I return, I'll be wearing a beret and borrowing a poodle (everyone in France has those, right?). read more

well, it seems i may be the only person in the msp metro not unabashedly singing the praises of StG. The good: awesome atmosphere gorgeous bar and surroundings perfect music, perfect lighting wonderful wine list. if you are a lover of wine and especially bubbles - saddle up to the bar and read their offerings like an intricate novel friendly service the tartines! delicious, perfect little bites. the tartine madame was a perfect, salty, cheesy delight and the salmon tartine offered an interesting, briny options in a sea of heavier french inspired morsels the not so good: the foie mille-fuile. i was exceptionally excited about the dish when we ordered, and when it arrive my anticipation grew -- the dish looks like a beautiful piece of cake. the presentation is wonderful, but the taste is significantly lacking. No depth of texture, very one-note, no essence of foie. It was almost like a 10% foie, 90% frosting piped unapologetically into a thousand layers of tasteless pasty. a disappointment. we shared several different large plates including the duck and the lamb. They were a-ok but nothing special and nothing exciting. would i recommend checking out StG? I suppose --- but the way to do it would be saddle up to the beautiful bar, order a couple tasting pours (which came out almost the size of a regular pour elsewhere), have a tartine and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. This is certainly not a 'destination restaurant' and frankly, i think us minneapolitans need to start being more discerning with all of these new restaurants popping up. I love the excitement and buzz about a new restaurant and love trying them out; however, if the food isn't up to snuff the atmosphere, service and drink offerings can only take you so far. Perhaps the brunch offerings will make up for the lackluster dinner performance. read more

Arriving here, I couldn't help but start the comparisons to Lynn on Bryant... I loved that restaurant while it lasted, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE what St. Genevieve has done to the place since. They reconfigured the formerly-awkward set-up of LoB to be much more useful and functional and the addition of the bar is not only smart but stylistically beautiful as it really set the stage for this french-inspired spot. The design details don't stop there, from the gorgeously-styled bathrooms (complete with copper paper towel holders and a burning candle) to the coasters signaling avec or sans (with or without bubbles) and the strategically placed wallpaper. The devil is in the beautiful chosen details around here. Brunch was lovely. ...minus the chaud chocolat, which honestly tasted like Nestle Quik. So pass on that. We split the salad to start and with a perfectly soft-boiled egg, the lettuce and radishes were tossed in a silky dressing when the yolk mixed with the vinaigrette. I had the tartine madame, a small version of a croque madame. Which was salty and perfectly cheesy, rich, but a small enough portion to make the indulgence worth it. I had a bite of the pain perdu - with orange marmalade and spiced whipped cream, it was a nice sweet brunch choice for those who prefer that over savory options. St. Genevieve has more than sold me as the newcomer on the block and I can't wait to come back for dinner, a leisurely glass of wine, and of course, more brunch deliciousness. read more

Every time we go here the food has been stellar. The ambience is perfect for a date night dinner, but I love brunch here the most. I think the beignets are off the chain and the benedict is satisfying and tasty. If Minneapolis had Bib Gourmand restaurants -- St. Genevieve would be it. read more

Had a reservation on a Monday and went about 45 mins early and they were still able to seat us, which was really nice! My friend and I split small plates, which I love to do. We started with the Gem salad, which they split for us (I always appreciate that :). The egg was cooked perfectly and the salad was very fresh. We also had the soft shell crab. It was good, as I love softshell crab, but think my friend didn't like it as much (mostly because I don't think she likes softshell crab--so beware of the type of crab). I did wish it had more avocado cream. Then we split the snail tartine. It has a great French feel and I loved the gruyere. Of course we also added a side of friend. Lastly, we split the squash, which may have been my favorite. I loved the unique flavors! They also offer half glasses of wine, which can be nice if you want just a sip. I actually liked St. Genevieve better than Tilia. The decor was great, though the restaurant was a bit loud. Will certainly be back! read more

Had a friend date @ 5:30 last night. I got there a bit early so I sat at the bar. Bartender (Andrew) was attentive, quick to offer water with out without gas (yes!). The place has a very comfortable atmosphere and charming aesthetic. (I've been to France and I say, yes I like this place.) My friend showed up and we happily decided to stay seated at the bar, as they offer full menu there. We shared a couple of tartines: the Choux de Bruxelles and the Saumon Fumé along with an order of the Pavé à la Poutine. Delicious. Oh and a couple of glasses of Merlot. All good. :) read more

We came here for dinner the night of our engagement, and it was a perfect way to set up the main event later that evening. It's small and intimate, perfect for a date night. Steven Brown is a beast. No question one of the culinary godfathers of Minneapolis. Most of the dishes are a fun spin on classic French food. Great beer and wine list and just a cool place to hang out. So far I've pretty much liked everything I've tried and the desserts are awesome. read more

The food was absolutely amazing! We started off with some small plates such as the Morels, Tartare, and the Mousse Tartines. The Morels small plate was done beautifully. The gnocchi were perfectly light and fluffy with great buttery flavors. The Lamb Tartare was delightful, very light and hints of citrus really brings the dish together. The mousse tartine is just a feel good French classic. Nothing is better than warm toast and airy foie gras mousse on top. I had the Duck for an entree and the duck was simply melt in your mouth goodness. The skin was crispy and I love that the searing process did not burn off all the duck fat! Duck lard has a lot of flavor and when some of it is left on the duck, it perfumes the duck in this savory heavenly awesomeness of meat. Overall this is an amazing restaurant with great food and great people. The only down fall of the restaurant is that it gets busy in the evening and you could wait for your table for a long time. I had reservations for 7:45pm and we were not seated until closer to 8:35pm. Many people went and came, and I could not get the impression that the hostess had forgotten of my date and I. Regardless, the food made up for the wait. I would definitely come back and very soon! read more

Should be five stars if not for our first impression. Weekday lunch crowd was sparse (7-8 diners when we arrived)so we asked if music could be turned down a notch (because my husband has a hearing problem.) We received pushback from the employee who curtly responded that he would not turn it OFF, but did turn it down a notch; and then snubbed us from then on... Our server however was lovely. She epitomized the gracious responsive culture of Parisienne cafe service. We enjoyed a light lunch of soup and omelet; both prepared to perfection. I like to take clients for lunch in our neighborhood, and have high expectations for food and service perfection. Ste Genevieve comes close. read more

St. Genevieve is a wonderful restaurant, straight out of the Paris. The decor is superb; light, sunny, and thankfully with no pictures of Paris hanging everywhere in efforts to stir your imagination; it doesn't need them. The service is prompt and friendly, though their recommendations may be suspect. The beaujolais was recommended as light and fruity, but was dry and heavy. The may have been confusing it with something else but the wine was clearly open too long at a high room temperature. Duck reins supreme in my mind so I was excited for our waiter to recommend it so highly. It came as two parts, a grilled partial duck breast and a separate duck confit. It wasn't so much bad as it was just not good. The duck breast was dry and tough. The confit? Very dry. Very, very dry. Being as duck confit is cooked slowly in fat, it is rare to achieve the dryness they somehow delivered in this little medallion. I'd hate to think that we were served leftovers from yesterday's dinner crowd that sat on a counter for a couple of hours but that is the impression. That said, I would definitely go back. Perhaps, I caught the chef on a rough day or there was some other snafu. We all have them and deserve a second chance. Plus the ambiance is simply worth it. read more

My brother-in-law gives me gift certificates to a well-reviewed restaurant every year. Each time I go, I enjoy the meal but, no place has ever made me go, 'I need to come back on my own dime'. Well, for the first time in TEN years, I am saying, 'WOW, I HAVE to come back!!'. Of course it would have to happen in the middle of the pandemic, where the future of ALL restaurants is in question. But, hopefully this review will help St Genevieve weather this financial storm because I want this to be our new family brunch spot for many years to come. Even our 15- year old, upon finishing her first-ever-quiche and handmade donuts proclaimed, 'Okay everyone THIS is my new birthday restaurant!'. Yes, the service is slow but, I can appreciate the financials in a restaurant and the fact sometimes an owner needs to wear many hats. But, since this isn't the only review that noticed it, I guess I would say, 'Maybe skip if you have a limited amount if time or, zero patience for a lack of promptness'?' And, for everyone else, just plan on getting some extra-time in for conversation while enjoying the WARMTH and FRIENDLINESS of this owner couple. They care about their customers- that's beyond evident. I can't attest to anything but brunch but, honest-to-god, there's not one thing that wasn't PERFECT! Bloody Mary Vietnamese coffee French press Friesse salad Quiche of day (roast vegetable I think?) Omelette of the day (mine was to-die-for mushroom n gruyere) SGt Smashburger and fries Assorted homemade muffins, cinnamon roles and fried donuts (not one hint of grease-literally, zero after-taste!) So, come in person if you can over these coming months but, if you can't, take-out will put a smile on the face of anyone lucky enough to be waiting at home. Decided to stop here for my daughter's 21st birthday. We were tucked away from the more popular open air placement near the front of the restaurant & placed by the unisex bathroom. An issue arose right away that the establishment would not serve my daughter a drink on her birthday because her driver's license had expired that day (the law say it is good until 11:59 p.m. of one's expiration date). Us parents ordered the Sunday "Dinner for Two" for $55. That included a lettuce & onion salad (good dressing), asparagus (adequate) & ample baked chicken. But the chicken was quite plain, no particular seasoning to it & even appeared slightly undercooked (pink inside). Their onion soup though was tasty. The décor is cute, particularly with the larger panel sized "window/doors" opening to the outside, the high, painted over, turn of the century ceiling & unique, classic bar setting. Oh, and they charge an extra 3% for employee's benefit program you every order. Unfortunately, this is a 'one & done' experience for us. read more

The small plates at this French inspired restaurant hit the spot. Although the portions were smaller than anticipated (not a problem for me as I was able to try more), each was delicious and unique and very reminiscent of meals I've had in France. The service was on point all night, with at least 3-4 people working our table, which was never overbearing or intrusive, but always kept our glasses full. Must try dishes are: the foie, which is held within buttery layers of pastry with accents of orange marmalade, and the grilled octopus, which was a light, refreshing counterpoint to many of the other dishes we tried. We had high hopes for a fun date night out. And some of the food was even pretty good. The soft egg on the gem salad was perfect. The broth in the bouillabaisse was delicious. So why a 2 star review? The service was pretty terrible. We were brought the wrong food and the wrong wine on 2 distinct occasions. We sat for at least 20 min with no water refills, no drinks, and no food at our table, right after asking for a wine list (clearly we wanted to order some wine). We wanted a bottle, but couldn't even place an order until after our main dishes came out, at which point we ordered 2 glasses. They came out after half of the food was gone. My shrimp was so over cooked it was inedible. I let the waitress know. She neither brought new ones nor comped anything on the bill. After placing a simple dessert order the waitress had to return 5 minutes later to clarify the order. My husband's dessert wine came out after we'd finished that course. All in all, we spent $175, left without being really full (we're definitely not big eaters), and spent much of the evening rolling our eyes at how underwhelming the service was. Despite some decent aspects of the good, It was such a bad experience, we won't be back. read more

Fantastic! I mean really excellent tasting food. Remember though it's French so the portions and small and meant to be shared and enjoyed together. It's a little pricey on some options but provides fun little flavors in each bite which makes it worth it. It sorta melted me it was so good. We ordered the Aligot, pasta with fennel and citrus and the bread with this delicious green butter that I cannot recall the name of. All staff was awesome and one little extra special touch...they provide post cards so I asked if they sold stamps and our waitress replied "no, but we'll mail it for you." Now that's supreme customer service. Will come back and experience more. read more

Great start to a day. Nice, relaxed late lunch atmosphere. Quaint space. A bit noisy up front but the host was kind enough to move us to the back, near the bar. I had the Salmon Tartine and my wife had the American Burger. The flavors were simple but well blended. Clean presentation, not overdone. The espresso drink was rich and strong, a plus in my book. We ended lunch with the beignets. Freshly made. Warm and tasty. Excellent to split this dessert with a few friends. There were only two of us, so we took the rest home. It reminded of a few of the French restaurants I have eaten at in Paris, New York and Philadelphia. Excellent addition to the MSP foodie scene. The portions were of perfect size for lunch. The atmosphere was relaxed and the wait staff was pleasant and accommodating. It's set in one of my favorite corners of MSP, perfect for a pleasant fall day. Been eyeing this place since it had opened in my neighborhood. Decided last Friday that it was time to give this place a try. Went in without any reservations and was estimated a 1.5 hour wait (seemed like a tactic to inflate their popularity??) but to our surprise we got a text within 10 minutes that our table was ready. Service started out decent, but quickly devolved into a nearly 2 hour long experience. Might I add we only ordered a steak au poivre which our waitress declined to inform us did not come with fries. I have never ordered a steak au poivre that did not come with fries or at least table bread. Any waiter actually acquainted with knowledge of serving in a French restaurant should be aware of this. I've ordered this dish many times in different restaurants and have never experienced this. Ever. After waiting roughly 1 hour for the steak (which we had ordered medium rare & came out medium instead & without fries) we had to wait another 20 for a side order of fries which were overly salted and only room temperature. After service became more and more spotty it became even more difficult to track anyone down for the check. All of this for roughly $80. We will not returning. read more
