Our waitress/bartender, Anne, turned a very good meal into a great dining experience. She made us feel as welcome as any long time customer. We ate here last night and returned tonight because we have worked all day and knew we could get a good meal, be comfortable and it's really reasonable too! Generous wine pours. The beer selection is not special....and it should be. The owner has chosen to open his special restaurant in this little town and he's putting it on the map! The waitress reccomended the Greek Hash -- a train of flavor tied together with feta and two eggs, over easy, on top. I ordered a Bloody Mary after sampling bartender's delightful mix; it's more perfectly spiced than simply hot to be hot. Rock solid, as was the service, with a little Motown music in the background. We have a Grand Haven cottage and ventured to Stanz at our neighbor's behest. He said: "it's the best perch you'll ever have." He was right on that, too. Can't wait to go again, and try more. Boom! Best kept secret in Grand Haven. I don't drink but I found them tucked away on Washington. They have beer/ wine/a full bar, including bacon vodka that makes the best Bloody Marys you will ever have in your life-complete with Frank's Hot Shots, bacon and olives as garnish. Very quaint place cozy, you can sit at the counter or table. TVs on to catch up on the news. I ordered the Bourbon omelet which included green peppers, onions, spicy eggs (Tabasco) with a coffee and sourdough bread. Funny story, I stayed at the Holiday Inn down the road and I told the guy at the counter checking me in that I had breakfast at Stanz. He told me "they serve breakfast?" I said yes and he told me that when he turned 21 he use to go there to get drunk quite often. I could not picture that at Stanz, yes they had a wine rack be hind the counter. read more

Small and cozy, friendly staff and good breakfast food! Omelet was good but you didn't get hashbrowns with it, it was an extra cost. We got biscuits and gravy to try though which came with hashbrowns. Overall very good and would come again! Had dinner here tonight. I had the jambalaya which was excellent, perfect amount of spice! I also had the Cesar salad to start which was a pretty decent size and the shaved Parmesan was really good. The others with me had the kids burger and the ribeye, which were equally delicious. My boyfriend had the gumbo to start, which he also really liked. Had dinner here last night. Small place - I think I read somewhere it sits 40. Maybe 7-8 tables plus a bar with seating. We walked in at a good time; one open table - grabbed an extra chair and sat down. Started with the pierogies; the sauteed onions on these were a nice touch. $7 a little pricey. 4 people had burgers including myself; you can choose 1/4 lb ($5 kids, $7 adult) or 1/2 lb. ($9). You can taste the char from their grill. Decent burger, but nothing to write home about - I think I'd try something else next time. Side salad ($3) was greens, shredded carrots, sliced cukes, chopped tomatoes, and croutons. I had the balsamic dressing which wasn't too tart like a lot of places; good. Companion had Chicken Marsala ($14) which she said was delicious; a little creamy. Only ~ 3 oz. of chicken, but still filling. Came with a side salad; she went with a dijon-based honey mustard dressing and was pleased. They were out of a beer on the menu. 16 oz. tap was a reasonable $3.50. Besides hamburger, kids menu also has chicken fingers, hot dog, grilled cheese, and mac and cheese. Would be nice to see them add a non-traditional kids meal item like a lot of places are starting to do. Service was friendly. They take Discover. We'll be back. read more

My wife and I have been to Stanz several times, always pleased with the experience. A very small joint with less than a dozen tables, plenty of bar/counter seating, and a nice, quiet atmosphere, looking new with nice woodwork around the bar. Usually going for breakfast, this time we were in for lunch. I had the ruben with fries and my wife had the shrimp po'boy with onion rings. Simple lunch food but delicious, the corned beef was wonderful and the rye even better, but the shrimp po'boy was something special -- spicy and perfectly done. I understand they get their meat from the butcher next door, and their bread from the bakery across the street -- two huge reasons why I respect and enjoy this local place. Another is their somewhat strange and interesting menu, with options ranging from farm style breakfast to Greek Hash, and Cajun/Creole items. No idea how "authentic" the surprising Louisiana options are, but I really enjoy the flavors, spices, Andouille, and fresh ingredients. My only negative is the seating can be close together if this small eatery is crowded, but for the local meat and bread, for the interesting menu, the great service and nice flavors, I recommend a visit to this small-town joint. read more

The food did take a little bit to get there, but as I said before the prices were excellent and the food was pretty tasty. Since it was our first time visiting Grand Haven, we figured we'd pick a restaurant with the help of Yelp reviews. Both my husband and I ordered the corn beef hash. Sadly, what we received was undercooked hash browns (on the left side of the plate) with a spoonful of tiny little pieces of corn beef sprinkled over them and bland eggs (on the right). None of the three ingredients were cooked together, and no salt, pepper, green peppers, or onions were included. If you're looking for a decent breakfast, don't eat here. read more

Reasonable prices, great food, and outstanding service. We had to wait (which is usually a good sign of good food and good service) and they kept coming out and making sure we were ok. They brought us water and coffee while we waited and kept apologizing. Service was stellar once we sat down. I never had an empty glass. I saw some reviews of sub-par service, so I figured I'd make it known that not only was the food outstanding, but the service was outstanding as well. Stanz is also attached to a meat market that the locals raved about. They use all their own meats at Stanz, which are obviously highly regarded. I'd definitely recommend this place or Morning Star Cafe for breakfast - or alternate between the two if you're there for more than one morning! read more

We were excited to eat at the Stanz Cafe based on a recommendation from our wonderful server Ricki at The Paisley Pig Gastropub where we had dinner last evening upon arriving to Grand Haven for our first visit to MI. I believe in always starting with the positives so here they are in no particular order. My brother-in-law enjoyed his corn beef hash. It was fresh and hot. My sister was impressed with the fresh sausage in the biscuits and Gray. We were told that the meat is fresh and comes directly from the meet market next door. While you cannot mess up scrambled eggs, mine were cold but eatable. When our server delivered our food she commented that the long wait was due to being one cook short. I'll give her that, not her fault. I believe customer service today is a lost art, kind of like hand written thank-you notes or letters, so with that said, I will share my disappointment. Upon entering the cafe, there were two open tables. We asked the person wiping the table if we should seat ourselves which she replied we should. She came back and took our drink orders. After delivering them, she said that our server would be with us shortly. After what seemed to be at least 10 minutes, we still were waiting for our server, and had yet to be approached by any server. We noticed what appeared to be a server talking for some time to a 3-Top table. Finally, she finished, walked by without saying a word, then delivered food to two other tables. Then, she returned to the 3-Top table (at which time we were finally becoming frustrated by lack of greeting or even a "hey, I will be with you in a minute") and promptly removed the paper from the straws for all 3 males guests and put them in their drinks. FINALLY, she stopped at our table and said "do you know what you would like." Really? This is the first impression you want to leave for first time guests? Having been a server who counted on tips to pay my way through college, fist impressions were key to setting the tone for the customers I served. Unfortunately this was not the case for the person who served us. If I ever have the occasion to return to Grand Haven, I will return to The Paisley Pig but not to Stanz. read more
