I haven't been here in a while but it's definitely not changed a bit. The quality of meats are great for an AYCE KBBQ restaurant. They give you PLENTY of Banchan at the table and keep them coming. A favorite of mine is the Beef Tongue. I think the only thing that was left more to be desired for me was the rice paper, but now we're getting into the weeds. We went pretty late Christmas Eve so it wasn't that busy which made it much quieter than usual. It's quite a lively place when it's full if I remember correctly. My wife and I absolutely love this place. It's a little different than other KBBQ places because you cook everything on a hot plate. Once you cook meat, especially the marinated ones, instead of the server changing out the grill, they spray water on it and scrape off the burned marinade and stuff that cooked off the meat. You then are left with a brand new hot plate to continue cooking. We love the quality of the meat and especially all the marinated meats. Our favorite is the marinated galbi and bulgolgi. The brisket is also very good as well, not too thin but on the thicker side. There are two menus, menu A is $28.99 and menu B is $24.99. I love the galbi so I like menu A. I also love getting the ice cream at the end of our meal. The ice cream machine is close to the entrance and it's self serve. They've switched out the flavors a few times but this time it was caramel and Strawberry. We got the Strawberry and it was delicious. The service is also very good, we didn't wait long to order or get refills. This place is pretty popular so be prepared to wait if you don't get there early. Worst experience ever. We were told we were next in line for wait list for over an hour. Then they told us 10 min, then 5 then they were waiting for a family to pay their check. Then after another 20 min of waiting we went to go ask again how long and they said they there was another party ahead of us. If we would have never asked, they would have never told us. After an hour and a half of them telling us we were next in line we finally decided to leave. I've never been a person to complain but this was so disappointing. Worse than 1 star. read more

Star BBQ is our go-to AYCE Korean BBQ spot. Like most good AYCE spots the wait can get a little crazy but that's why we're so thankful for Yelp Waitlist! Definitely check out the list and add yourself ahead of time or on the drive over to minimize your wait time. It's a nice big place inside with multiple rooms and tables. Plenty of space for large parties if you're coming with a group. The meat selection here is good and quality is great for AYCE. Our go-to orders include the beef brisket, and beef belly then depending how we feel will add in some thinly sliced pork belly, pork jowl, short rib, and beef tongue. Unlike some other places, you have to specifically ask for the tofu soup, cheese corn, and steamed egg so don't forget to request those with your meal. And while it's so very tempting to eat until you can't move, definitely save room for a little dessert! One of our favorite things about Star BBQ is the soft serve machine at check out! It's usually a strawberry and caramel offering available so get that swirl on it's the perfect end of meal treat! read more

Certainly one of the better KBBQ spots I have been to in recent years, although there is always room for improvement.. Employees from start to finish were so welcoming and worked hard to handle the busy dinner rush. My group got seated almost immediately, which was nice since soon after the place was swamped, leaving people with longer wait times. Even though the restaurant was packed, every waitress/waiter handled the business and left no table hanging. They have a good rhythm and routine. Their meat quality is decent, although some cuts were significantly more fatty than I remember at other places. After eating to my fill, my stomach felt weighed down and greasy over the next 24 hours. Next time I will play my cards a little differently. The brisket is good, just keep it clean... They have a little ice cream machine too for a quick dessert. Unfortunately for me, the two choices were a coffee flavor and a caramel flavor - both which I cant stand. Get here earlier for less of a wait during early dinner. Stopped in on a Friday for a party of 5. There's 2 price points for AYCE $28 and $32. Boty come with 3 dipping sauces (ponzu, chili paste, flavored oil) per person and ayce sides/appetizers. The more expensive option includes beef kalbi, loin steak, shrimp and a few other choices. Stipulation is you can only order 3 meat choices at a time and everyone is charged the same price point (whichever you choose). Pay in cash for free sodas for everyone in your party and 10% off your bill. There's no vegetables to grill. Only veggies available are a fresh tossed romaine lettuce salad in asian vinaigrette dressing, and your typical ban chan appetizers (kim chi, bean sprouts, spicy cucumber, marinated fishcake slivers. There's a handful of side dishes too like kimchi soup, cheesy corn, noodle soup, sticky rice, etc. There's also a handful of korean and japanese beer. Buy a beer bottle $12+ and get the second one for 1 penny more. For desert it was soft serve ice cream (by the cashier area) with some toppings (mochi bits, m&m, cereal). What a tacky place the out side is still under construction, the entrance is dirty , one glass sort was unlocked , the hostes are not friendly there s a weird cream bar at the entrance-- a blocked off stair case . I go here about once every other month. Service is always great and I like that you get a discount plus free soft drink if you pay with cash. For some reason today all the meats were super oily. Tofu soup was really good today, steamed egg was good, we also tried the Korean noodle soup and enjoyed that as well. Best barbecue place to visit! They have great choices and prices. Two menu options to choose from. The servers are always great. I personally love to get Carlos as my server. He speaks English's and Spanish so he will explain everything perfectly if we have any questions regarding the meats. It can get pretty loud inside. Other than that I highly recommend this place. Been eating here since 2015. I hate that they changed their ice cream to like a yogurt type. I miss the caramel one. read more

My partner and I wanted to try a new AYCE kbbq spot. This place was not fancy but not super cheap. The waitlist was closed but when we got the restaurant we got seated right away. We tried brisket, marinated and non marinated boneless short rib, spicy pork belly and beef tongue. They also have a soju special where you can buy 1 bottle and get the next for 1 cent. I've been coming to Star BBQ since the old days, when it was called Byul Daepo, and I have got to say that this place had its fair share of growing pains, but they have come into their own and settled in nicely in Koreatown OC! Surrounded by a plethora of options, Star BBQ always hits the spot for a reasonable price ($27 per person for AYCE premium menu, which includes Bottom Sirloin and Galbi). The staff are always welcoming, attentive, and friendly, and keep an eye out for the Yelp waitlist to check in prior to arrival as the wait here is LONG, DAILY! Star is only open for dinner service everyday, and it's always a full house. Plus, they've got a swanky waiting area upstairs with a full bar & lounge. This was my first time visiting STAR barbecue, and it was great! I would def drive by some spots just to come here. The "expensive" menu has good amount of items including things I like - cheese corn, octopus, shrimp, beef belly, jowl, marinated beef rib and boneless beef rib pieces. It's worth it. Downside is the Kalbi is limited to 2 piece/pp. BUT the service here was great! Felt like before COVID! Really our guys had great memory and brought out everything we wanted and quickly! Banchan here are just ok. Fish cake, bean sprouts, mac salad had too much mayo, kimchi cucumbers but NO kimchi? Or should I have asked for it?? Atmosphere was alright, the floor is carpeted which is gross but at least your not walking on slick floors. The air was cloudy but not terribly. You will smell though! I also love the grille! It slants down so grease goes away from you and is easier to clean then if they lift the hot grill off and put a new one. Since they're cleaning the hot grill you don't start with a cold grille and can start cooking quickly! Dessert is included, they have a unlimited soft serve machine with strawberry and caramel soft serve. The cones are super sus because of COVID, no napkins etc but I just used it like a bowl and ate the top. I really enjoyed the meal here and will return. read more

There are some days where the service and quality is excellent, and other visits where i'm left disappointed. Star bbq is great for their price. Would literally check up on my table every 5 minutes. These are days where I would love to give Star 5 stars. However, there have been more days where it's the opposite. I've been wanting to write a review for this place for quite some time but my most recent visit is what pushed me to finally do it. My sister and I were one of the first customers when they opened for the day. There weren't too many people and it wasn't packed or crowded. We had two other groups sitting on both sides of our table. Our server would constantly check on their tables, yet they NEVER, not even a single time, came to our table to check on us. My sister and I had to wait and flag them down and would be kept waiting with an empty grill burning since they would take so long. Not only did they not check on our table but messed up on several orders. I was left super disappointed. A pretty solid kbbq spot in Garden Grove for AYCE. My family and I came here for dinner last night and added ourselves on the waitlist driving there. Upon arrival at 6 pm, our table was ready. Come early to avoid a wait. The restaurant was spacious with lots of table. We ordered from their Menu B which is $27 per person for AYCE kbbq. They have a good selection of raw beef, marinated beef, pork, and chicken. My favorite was their brisket and beef belly. I would not recommend their baby octopus. It was flavorless and too chewy. I like that corn cheese was an option on their sides. Customer service was fast. Our waiter came by multiple times to ask if we needed anything. Meat was brought out quickly and our side dishes were refilled in a timely manner. They also clean the grill for you without you having to ask. Complimentary ice cream too! read more

The food was decent.. some of the meat was fatty and they give u a large portion of the bad mediocre meat and small portions of the good meat, and it's a pretty decent price but the service is absolutely terrible. They're more worried about getting customers in to get more money rather than focusing on the customers they already have seated. My husband and I came in and when we ordered he ordered a steamed egg as well. We got all of our other food except for his egg, so we patiently waited. After about 20 minutes we asked our server and still no egg. After about 30 minutes we asked again and still NO EGG. We finally got the attention of the manager who then PUT OUR ORDER FOR THE EGG IN???? At this point we had finished all our food and was ready to leave. We finally asked for the bill, not even caring for the egg anymore and AFTER we asked for the bill is when the manager finally bought out my husband's steamed egg and he only seemed to care because we asked for the bill and we were pissed. DO NOT CONTINUE TO SEAT GUESTS IF YOU CANNOT TEND THE GUESTS YOU ALREADY HAVE. We probably won't be coming back, there's way better kbbq for similar prices and WAYY BETTER SERVICE. Service is usually great and attentive, button to ring your server and fast service. Only thing I noticed now is the brisket meat quality when you reorder meat later on in your dinner. The brisket meat cut or quality is not the same as your first order of meat when you're like on your 3rd order. The meat is very chewy like meat that is supposed to go in pho', not kbbq. You will be chewing on the same piece for a good minute before it is edible. A few years later, and I find myself still coming back here and raving about it to my coworkers who may not have had Korean BBQ before. Food is actually pretty good. Even for $30, we're getting the most out of our money with beef tongue. That's the star of the show, IMO. There's other meat cuts on there that are very good as well. Most places nowadays are hitting $36+ The beer is good too, I normally go for a pitcher of Hite. Very smooth and has a good bite to it. Service has been consistent for the past two years, if not better. I don't know what happened but keep it up! I will definitely keep coming here as it's definitely my favorite KBBQ spot. Was in the area and wanted to try this spot because it had good reviews. I appreciate that it had a Yelp check-in feature but my review is only 4 starts because the max wait was listed as 42 minutes and we ended up waiting almost 90 minutes. Service once we got seated was very quick and reliable (there is a doorbell system), meat variety and price was good, the banchan selection was a lot smaller than other Korean/KBBQ restaurants. This restaurant is nicer than most korean barbecues but still a laidback vibe with kpop music videos playing on the tvs. The food is fresh, and buy one soju get the second for a penny? Their meat cut options are wide and pretty good. Star is one of my preferred bbq spots! I love the thin and thick cut pork belly as well as beef belly. So good! I also really like their tofu soup, it's a good portion too so you don't get stuck with a lot if you don't finish. Rice is pretty decent here compared to other kbbq restaurants. They don't change the grills but instead give it a scrape clean. The grill didn't seem to heat that evenly so just have to keep an eye on that. After all these years, Star is still one of my go-to AYCE KBBQs! The reason is they've always been consistent. I told myself I want to try new KBBQ spots but get hit with reality that, a good one is hard to find. Their service is always friendly and speedy as well. My only gripe is they give you such hefty servings in the beginning that we can explore different meats without having to finish what they piled on for us. I'd like to start off by saying that I have been coming to this particular, Korean barbecue restaurant for over 20 years. I knew the old owners before it was star barbecue before they remodeled it. It hasn't been the same for a few years, but I think recently it just tanked I have never in my 25 years of going to different Korean bbq's i've never been served beef brisket that had no meat on it. It was literally just white fat even after we cooked it completely It was complete gristle. The Bulgogi was equally disappointing. We were told it would be between 20 minutes to 55 minutes before they could seat us it took over an hour and a half we noticed that a lot of parties that were just showing up were being served before us because they were in larger groups. The comments between the people waiting was obvious big groups go first and groups of two or three have to sit back and wait often sharing tables split down the middle. You're literally sitting arm to arm with a stranger that's what we did the server was very sweet and attentive she brought us everything we asked for quickly and in great portions so when I decided to tip her well I was sad to learn that she was not able to keep the tip, but that it went to the restaurant owners Like Seriously ??
