We came on Friday early at 5pm to hit the happy hour to try the cocktails (thai old fashioned, jade royale, espresso martini) which were all great. I prefer less sweet so I asked for a less sweet espresso martini the was perfect balance. *Ask to sit in the bar area to use the happy hour* Surprisingly we were blessed with both a personal magic show at our table and a wine tasting event. Star Leaf was indeed a disappointment. The restaurant itself had a really nice ambiance. Well built and very presentable. I came here with a reservation of 7 people to have a family dinner. First off, service was not up to par, (mind you the restaurant wasn't even packed for a Saturday night) if anything the service was pathetic. First off it took the server 10 minutes to get us menus, and he did not even offer water for the table, I even had to ask one of the busser to get me a water pitcher to fill up our waters myself because our server was nowhere to be found. In addition, when there were empty plates on the table, no one came to clear the table. We had to stack the plates on top of each other to make room for our other dishes. Not to mention they only cleared the table after we got the check. When it came to getting the check, usually for a place like this you'd expect your check to be in a booklet, no instead our server just handed us the paper receipt. Genuinely jaw dropping, it's like if I was dinning at Panda Express. Not to mention, I don't get the hype around their food either, everything was bland if not super dry, extremely mediocre food, as it felt like I was eating at banana bay... only good dish was the coconut chicken soup and the tofu appetizer. Mind you we ordered 8 different entrees, the short ribs were okay, the sea bass was horrendous, the chicken was super dry, and portion of the pineapple fried rice felt like they were rationing. The restaurant was beautiful and patio seating is a must during the summer. This is a really nice upscale Thai Restaurant. Once we got seated we were handed menus, prawn chips and even leis for Father's Day. We ordered royal chicken curry, lamb chops, braised short ribs, mango Thai salad, shrimp egg rolls, branzino, royal lobster fried rice and mango sticky rice. Everything was amazing, flavor was rich and fresh. One of the best mango papaya salad I ever had. All the fried food was fried to perfection. Everything is a must try. The only thing that I would say was the lobster fried rice was kinda cold when it came to us. Mango sticky rice dessert was mid not a wow factor for me. Mangoes weren't that sweet and not enough coconut cream sauce. We also got 2 drinks one was a non alcoholic half moon spritz very refreshing and the other one was an alcoholic cooler cocktail very well balance and light with the alcohol and the sweetness. Our waitress was really sweet but at the same time I felt like she kept pushing us to order drinks that's why we order 2 drinks. My family and I aren't really fan of sweet drinks or alcohol. Very large and pretty restaurant in Pasadena. I really wanted to like this place but everything just kinda fell short. The salmon vinaigrette was cut kind of poorly with different sized pieces and varying thickness. Also on the backside of the serving spoon there was a piece of leafy vegetable that was stuck to it that didn't look like the one used in the dish, so that was kind of gross. The entree portions, though they tell you it's smaller portions for their lunch menu, were still pretty hefty! Everything was also beautifully presented there. -Spicy Tom Yum: It tasted good but I wouldn't exactly call this spicy. It came with 2 shrimp and 2 mussels. -Crispy Sea Bass: This was okay. It just tasted like fried fish, very light flavoring from the marination. The dipping sauce was just okay. -Thai Royal Curry: A bit on the sweet side but delicious mixed with the crab. Star leaf is located on Colorado in Pasadena this used to be the old Roy's location. I thought the food was average at star leaf. The restaurant itself is really good looking with a really nice interior. We were able to find street parking but they do offer valet as well. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu but she did seem like she was taking care of a lot of tables so service was not the most efficient. The food was ok nothing amazing. All the food was average and none of the dishes stood out. They have a beautiful menu book which is really helpful in choosing what dishes to order. We ordered a feast in celebrating our October birthdays. We started off with fried tofu, papaya salad and salmon sashimi. All were delicious and the playing was gorgeous. Next we had the ribs, fried rice, mussels and eggplant. The fusion of flavors really stood out with the mussels and longanisa. It was in a rich broth and we soaked up that broth with the bread. Lastly we finished our feast off with mango, sticky rice, flan and ice cream. The mango with sticky rice stood out the best and is highly recommended if you like fruity and sweet sticky desserts. I didn't really taste the flavors in the rice but it was nice that they colored the rice naturally with dragon fruit, pandan and butterfly pea. The flan is recommended if you like an espresso toffee flavored, creamy dessert. And lastly, who doesn't like ice cream. We could really taste the flavors with the ice cream - pandan and Thai Tea. I've been wanting to try Starleaf for a while now and had the chance to go to their lunch special and it did not disappoint. Lunch specials are weekdays from 11 AM to 3 PM. Which honestly is a good timeframe for lunch specials. There is a large amount of items on the lunch special menu and prices are fair. It's $29 per person for an appetizer and an entrée item. They do mention ahead of time that their lunch special portion is much less than their regular Menu, which I did appreciate. Walking in, this is one of the most beautiful yet simply decorated restaurants that I've been to in a long time. Outdoor seating is beautiful for lunch, but they're indoor decor is even more impressive. It's dimly lit with ambient lighting That's perfect for a romantic date or a girls night out too. Shrimp cake skewers 5/5 - let me start off by saying the presentation is BEAUTIFUL. Super flavorful and crispy on the outside. Definitely a good starter to get. Crying tiger Salad 4/5 - salad was good and flavorful, vibrant but I have to say the steak was a little underwhelming. For 12 dollars to add in the steak it's a good portion for $12. Cooked to the right temperature but could use a little more seasoning in my opinion. Royal crown Fried rice 4/5 - again with the beautiful presentation. The fish roe covering is pretty impressive. Good tasting fried rice, a little fishy with certain bites. Black truffle Noodles 5/5 - the most underwhelming as far as presentation but probably one of my favorite dishes here. Truffle oil infused with the noodles and I love Brussels sprouts which was a good addition. Literally licked the bowl afterwards. Little tip: if you mix the royal crown fried rice with the truffle noodles it is one of the best things I've tasted. 20/5 if I can give it that rating. Try it out it's amazing! 5 stars for their winning Tom Yum soup and I don't even like Tom Yum soup... until now. We were told the soup feeds 4-5 people, but the 2 of us finished it because it was that good. It's a simple soup with fresh black mussels and giant prawns that's cooked tableside and served to you piping hot in a decorative soup plate. The flavors are subtle, deep and satisfying (not too sour or spicy). I was really excited to try this place as the menu options sounded so enticing. This has to be one of the biggest letdown dining experiences I have had. As you may recall, Yelp did not permit reviews of this place for quite some time so I will do my best to recall the details of each dish as I visited this place in June. He literally was my ride or die during my dining experience when he served to obstruct another patron from seeing me as I walked to the bathroom. This is the type of people y'all need in your circle! Now for the dining experience that was not so memorable except in how it lacked to appease my palate. I started off with the Saigon Summer Rice Paper Rolls. While I would like to describe the flavor for you , I cannot as they simply tasted like nothing. I thought it was me but my friend also tried one and she too, agreed the rolls were completely flavorless. These were comped after I informed the waiter of how disappointing they were. The Bakka Wild Salmon was fresh and flavorful. The flavors complimented each other well. This was the best dish out of the three. I'm a huge fan of wagyu but this definitely was not up to par with other wagyu experiences. Something about the way the meat was cooked just didn't make it a melt in your mouth experience. As you can see, we dined outside. The outside patio is cute and during the summer it was a perfect option. There is parking in a structure and the restaurant validates. You can also opt for street parking if you can snag a spot. All in all, this was a sub par dining experience that definitely was not worth $164 (yes, that was the total for the items listed for just one person). Perhaps I just picked the wrong selections or perhaps there was just too much hype around this establishment. We were very curious about Star Leaf because it looks like such a beautiful luxurious space and we don't have enough Southeast Asian food in LA (aside from Thai). My husband and I dropped in without a reservation on a weekend for lunch and noticed the place was fairly packed with families. Our curry and laksa took a while to arrive, and when they did we were blown away by how massive the dishes were. They told us that everything is served "family style" - which I think is a bit weird for a bowl of laksa noodles - but anyhow, yes, it was a huge ass bowl of laksa and there was enough left over for our next day's meal. I am giving three stars because despite the sizes of each dish and the promise of feeling transported back to SE Asia, the flavors were meh. The Singaporean Laksa was very coconutty and seemed to be missing a couple of ingredients. Super mild flavor, verging on bland. (I am from SE Asia, I know what a Singaporean Laksa tastes like) The curry chicken tasted like HK style curry (that stuff made from yellow powder) but extra bland. Love how the food is presented, the little details like that cute toothpick holding the banana leaf in place for the egg roll dish- just puts me in happiness. When one is happy, food just tastes even better. Really enjoyed the shrimp and water chestnut egg roll with that dip- (so extremely delicious). The fried rice was perfect, tho wish there was a bit more roe on top (not only texture wise but also add a bit of salty flavor to the rice). The papaya salad with mango was a bit bland, felt like it's missing the chilies and garlic kick. Star Leaf is a worldwide brand founded by a woman with over 40 locations; this is their first US site, situated on Colorado Blvd in the former Roy's space in the Playhouse District. The food is Asian/Southeast Asian. They serve lunch and dinner daily, with a weekday happy hour. Apparently they offer valet parking for dinner. The decor is elegant and exotic, with an outdoor patio, indoor and outdoor water features, lots of dark wood and palm fronds, not unlike the Long Bar at Raffles Singapore (which I've visited--birthplace of the Singapore Sling), and also not unlike a luxe, darkly lit Tommy Bahamas. Fo lunch, Star Leaf offers a 2-course $29 menu with 5 starter options and 5 entree options. The options are all off the main menu, which can all be seen in the menu that has photos. As a group of 4, we ordered 3 different starters and 4 different entrees and enjoyed them family-style, which the restaurant encourages. They of course have a full bar and the lychee martini was recommended (they also have Raffles Singapore Sling), but I went with a zero-proof strawberry pandan lemonade, which was very refreshing. Our 3 starters were: Mamasan's Shrimp Cake Skewers (2 per order, so got 2 orders), the Spicy Thai Som Tum Salad and Saigon Summer Rice Paper Rolls (4 per order). The shrimp cakes were presented on lemongrass skewers with charred pineapple and a garlic chili dip that wasn't spicy. The salad was shaved green papaya with tomatoes, mango and peanuts; the menu said it had dried shrimp, but luckily that overpowering taste was not detectible. The summer rolls were vegetarian and uncooked with a sweet mango dip. All very tasty. Our mains were: 1) Thai Royal Curry (comes with shrimp or soft-shell crab--we chose shrimp), served with a freshly baked baguette that was more like a soft French roll, it had a golden crust but was not buttered. It can be ordered with lobster a la carte. Coconut cream-based. 2) Malay's Captain's Curry (we chose chicken over the upcharged beef), it had a lot of potatoes, also coconut cream-based. Served with white rice. 3) Rainforest Vegetable Curry, a variety of fresh vegetables that surely varies with the season, no coconut. 4) Royal Crown Fried Rice, a very photogenic dish with scallops, shrimp, egg, jasmine and wild rice topped with orange fish roe. All dishes were generously portioned. My favourites were the veggie curry and fried rice because I like but do not love coconut. We were too full to try their signature Pink Mekong dessert, but did see its dramatic camera-ready presentation at a nearby table. Service was very pleasant but not terribly attentive. Although the restaurant became fairly full during our weekday lunch visit, they were not in a hurry to turn tables, which allowed us to linger. This restaurant is Amazing! Everything we ate was delicious. We did feel the need to add a little salt and sugar into the curry, but that is just our flavor palette and they accommodated our every request. The service was excellent and we will be going back and taking friends! read more

Drove almost an hour to Pasadena from the West Hollywood area. Didn't make a reservation since we wanted to stop along the way. Got sat by the bar with a view of football which I don't like, and the bathroom and service station. We were served warm tap water and waited for Connor C. who didn't smile back when we walked to get seated. Service was slow but not busy. Food took awhile. Thai seafood vermicelli had 3 pieces of shrimp and maybe for little calamari ring. Food was not hot, but warm. The Thai street food chicken curry was better but he upcharged us for a big portion which we didn't want or ask for $32 instead of $25 and the dark chicken meat wasn't great. Glad I had the Clipp deal that I purchased for $40 off. Felt like a Las Vegas scam!!! Horrible seating and service, food gets 1 star. Go to Thai Town. read more

Our favorites were the crispy fried short ribs, truffle pasta with scallops, and braised short ribs! We also got crispy egg rolls, orange chicken, and the rice with the masago on top, coffee flan n something else. We weren't happy that a Thai food place ran out of pad thai by 8 pm... but very grateful for Daeja and her recommendations. Super sweet and helpful! We loved her. We came on a Saturday night and there were plenty of street parking. We had to wait a bit for our table. The host offered us champagne while we waited. I don't think any restaurant has ever offered champagne while waiting for our table before. I felt super bougie lol. The restaurant interior was so beautiful from the flooring to the wall design and ceiling design to the décor on the tables and lighting fixtures. I felt like I entered a scene in the Great Gatsby! We were celebrating an occasion and was offered a free dessert - the Vietnamese coffee flan, delicious! We also order a little bit of everything from the menu. My top favorites was the Royal Crown Fried Rice, the summer cucumber rolls, and definitely the pork collar - to die for! The drinks were just as delicious and also very strong which we loved! We will definitely be back to try their other menu items! PS. Also loved the picture menu. It made ordering very easy, and great for non-english speaking parents as well! read more
