I have been twice. Once for a work meeting and once with my family. The first time I had the filet. I was underwhelmed with the cut of meat. It was grainy. This time I tried the chicken. It was simultaneously chewy and the skin was unappealing. The flavor was good but everything is so heavily seasoned. You get bread and fries and onion rings but honestly I would rather a better main entree than a bunch of heavy fried food. It missed the mark for me. Try it for yourself. read more

Food was great overall, but our server Charles seemed either very new or a bit out of it. We only saw him when he first took our order and again when he brought the check. He came back toward the end of our meal to ask how everything was, then packed up my leftovers. After that, he walked around the restaurant for about five minutes with my to-go bag and even brought us the check before realizing it was our food he had been holding. It was a little confusing that he forgot which table's food he had just packed up minutes earlier. It seemed like he might have been having an off or sluggish day. Aside from that, the food itself was really good. For breakfast, it might help to have two separate lines out front, one for reservations and one for walk-ins. There were several people with reservations waiting in line who were getting comments from others about "cutting," which created some awkward tension. I know it is a new restaurant and still working through things, but a bit more staff and menu training would go a long way. Staff should not have to read ingredients off the guests menu when asked questions about a dish. It might also help to have clearer signage letting reservation guests know they can head inside instead of waiting in line. read more

Also the skeeball is fun for kids and adults. ***we had multiple parties so when we went to the valet we gave one lump sum for a tip however the one of the valets harassed the other party for a tip. Came here for brunch and I am thoroughly impressed! Superica was my fav restaurant so I was determined to dislike this place, but everything we got was so good that we will definitely be back! Drinks: unsweet tea and coffee - surprisingly tasty Apps: Vegetable crudités - high quality fresh vegetables with a unique dip. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, it was refreshing and help our meal feel more balanced! Brunch mains: 1. steak and eggs - delicious!! The steak was perfect, I've never had a skirt steak that well cooked. I'm sure the steaks for dinner are just as good or better. The hashbrowns were really good too, they are covered in American cheese so if you don't like that kind get it removed. 2. Breakfast tacos - also amazing, best breakfast tacos I've had in a loonnggg time and they reminded me of superica . We got one with crispy potato and one with bacon, both on corn. The crispy potato in the taco was actually crunchy, 10/10. I would come back just to get the tacos tbh!! Gluten free review: they do seem to have a decent amount of gluten free options. The A2 steak sauce is gluten free, the French fries are gluten free but share a fryer I believe. Same things for the crispy potato skins. They offer corn tortillas for the breakfast tacos. There's a handful of gluten free apps as well. The waiter was super patient with all my questions and was happy to go ask the kitchen what was gluten free and what was not. Ambience - the inside is a cool saloon vibe. Texas country music playing and dim lights. They change the red checkered table clothes in between each table which I love for cleanliness. At the moment there is no outdoor seating but hopefully that will change! All in all, we will be back for brunch and dinner! I was expecting average over priced food but the quality and amount of food you get is great. After the skirt steak brunch, I bet I'd be happy eating the cheapest steak on the menu for dinner. So we did the friends and family serving at 1 pm on a Friday. Admittedly hoping for dinner service but got brunch instead. I'll start with food was GOOD. They were seemingly out of Chicken Fried Chicken and Steak (and eggs) though they def came out to other tables while we were there. Drinks were good; frozen espresso martini and the SROF (old fashioned) were tasty. Milk Rolls were creamy and soft - but don't order unless it's 4 or more people b/c it'll fill you up. Onion rings and fries (50/50): fries were crispy and boardwalk-style but stick with the O-Rings! Big winner. Would probably have been great with a like a ranch dip or something like that. Wife ordered the migas. Not that it wasn't good, but it wasn't spicy; she loves spice and it's expected on a Mexican dish. Even with hot sauce it was ehhh on that front. When you switch from a Mexican spot to a more country diner type - keep the spices around. I ordered biscuits and bacon gravy with over medium eggs and this SMACKED of flavor (spice in particular). I'm not sure if this was like white pepper or what but holy cow that was good. They also brought us a comp jalepeno/cheddar sausage that was very good. The new star river is nestled next to the infamous La Lucha restaurant in the Heights. I will say I loved the concept of family style sides and the never ending option to order more. I had the chicken fried chicken and unfortunately the flavor was good but I had a really bad cut of chicken. The chicken breast still had a large layer of skin that was very gummy and unappetizing. The fries were also very salty, but I did enjoy the massive salad! The service was great and TJ waiter did a good job and educating us on the learning curve of how the menu worked. The place is also decorated very well and makes for a great date night spot. I will have to come back and try the steak to give a full review in the future! read more

This was quite an experience. The ambiance is casual and laid back. It felt sort of like something from the 90s -- and I mean that in a good way. The portions are very generous. You will leave here full, rest assured. The food was very good. We had potato skins, skirt steak and the chicken fried chicken. All very delicious; no complaints. They also bring a salad and a biscuit that is absolutely delicious. The service was great -- the manager also brought us a pie on the house and biscuits and house-made jam on the house, and both were good, but the biscuits/jam were phenomenal. This restaurant is very underwhelming. Me and my wife were looking for a place to have dinner and decided to go to Star Rover. We have been to Superica and LaLucha several times so we decided to give this place a try expecting a similar experience, but what we got was a huge disappointment. The concept does not match the prices. It's has an old school diner feel with high end steak prices. The servers are wearing graphic tee's, the tables are covered in red and white checkerboard table clothes, and the only sides are a shareable basket of Fries and Onion rings. Overall the food was decent but not great, fries were burnt, salad was good, the Chicken Fried Chicken was decent, and the service was average. Overall I would not recommend. The only reason I would go back would be because of the Pancakes on the Brunch menu, but after this experience I can find pancakes elsewhere. read more

The food was great. We ordered a chicken fried chicken and a 7 oz skirt steak. Both meals came with a fresh, delicious salad, along with onion rings and fries. I liked that the onion rings and regular fries were served together, so there was no need to order them separately. We had a reservation at 5 PM and came to this restaurant after seeing it online. When we arrived at the host stand, we were seated right away. Our server, Charles B., greeted us in a very calm manner and simply asked if we had been there before. Since we said no, he asked what we would like to order. He didn't offer drinks, but overall he was very quiet and minimal in conversation considering we hadn't been there. We ordered an appetizer, but it didn't come out until we had to ask the food runner when our main dishes were already being brought out. It's an interesting concept...a 1970s style steakhouse, just with better food. And just an unapologetic meat lover's paradise. So let's start with the food. Jeff had the steak. It was good. Not the best ever, but I was a good ribeye that was mostly cooked to order. (It was a little more medium than medium rare...not a mortal sin.) Michelle got the chicken fried chicken and really liked it. Really nice crisp to it. And a big piece of chicken. The rolls that come out before the meal are simply decadent. We could just simply go there, eat rolls, and be happy. The salad, and particularly the dressing, were surprisingly good. It's a simple salad, but just delicious. Good onion rings, but didn't care for the fries. Service was pretty good. A little slow a couple times, but it was okay. Jeff ordered coffee while Michelle got ice cream for dessert, but the coffee was lukewarm, and that was one of the times that the waiter was kind of absent, so there was no warm up on that coffee, nor an offer of a refill. (If I'm paying $3 for a coffee, I want refills.). The prices as a whole were kind of steep. I don't have a problem paying $63 for a steak, but it needs to be a really good steak, and this was good...but not that good. And $36 for chicken fried chicken borders on outrageous. But getting overcharged in the Heights is not a foreign concept. read more

WOW! Ambiance is casual but nice enough it still feels like a "steak" spot. I was insanely impressed with this steak- I've been to almost every fancy steakhouse in Houston and this steak surpassed most of them that are almost 2-3x the price. Each steak comes with salad, bread, and 50/50 fries/onion rings. While it is on the pricey side with 6oz filet at $55/plate when you include the sides it is WELL worth it. It's a 5 star steak without all the fuss of the fancier places. Definitely recommend- our steaks were cooked perfect and our service from Kat and Sav made our experience extra special. The one thing that disappointed was the gravy which just wasn't impressive (bland). I actually ordered extra with the meal since I love my CFC and Chicken Fried Steak with lots of gravy and ketchup and I never touched it. Still feel its was 5 Star meal, but two things I would tweak: - Give the gravy a kick! - Pretty much all chicken fries throughout the US come with mashed potatos - maybe I had that option but don't remember seeing it on the menu? I really wanted to love Star Rover because the space itself is beautiful. It has a great ambiance--lively but not too loud and the decor and location are definite highlights. The hostess was welcoming when we checked in (reservations are highly recommended). We were excited to try this place because of all the hype, but it's not quite where it needs to be yet. The service didn't fully match the setting. Drinks took a while to arrive, and although our server started off friendly, went mostly absent for the rest of the meal, we only saw the server a couple of times. At this price point, I expect service to be attentive and consistent. I don't think guests should have to look around or track down a server for basic needs. It felt a bit impersonal at times, and while I understand places get busy, service is a big part of the overall experience. The food was good overall. The Superica Hotcakes were tasty and thick, but could have used more syrup. The migas were also good, though they didn't come with the refried beans as expected. Other than that, everything was enjoyable. Overall, the atmosphere is great, but the service and execution need some improvement to fully match the hype and pricing. read more

This is the only restaurant I have been to that was so uncooperative. I asked them to hold my pancake until I finished my savory food. They refused. Then I asked if they could substitute my pork belly for bacon, again they refused. The service took forever and our food was the last to come out even though all the tables around us came in after us. Bottom line, there are thousands of restaurants in town that ate coorperative and have good service, to waste money and come here. Not to mention the food was super expensive. I wanted to love Star Rover but we had a rough start that was hard to overcome. We were seated promptly for our 5:45pm reservation but probably at the worst table in the restaurant (another 2 top was open by the window the entire time we were there). They were crowded for 5:45 but they weren't on a wait. After being seated for 5 mins the hostess filled our water glasses but our waiter didn't greet us until 6pm, after I asked the hostess where he was. He was fine for the remainder of the meal. I got a steak and my husband the burger. Both were good, not exceptional. My steak was cooked perfectly but because it was served on a cold plate, it didn't stay warm. The ambiance and the sides were the highlight and the drink menu is well priced. However, due to the service issues we likely won't be returning anytime soon. read more

The appetizer menu isn't on the menu it's on a tiny sticky note on your table where your options are very limited Oysters,cruditie, potatoe skins.. we didn't order any of those they didn't sound appetizing. .so after that you choose your cut of steak and your ONLY option for sides is what everybody is getting ... Yeasty rolls, a green goddess salad that's the only dressing they offer, heavy on the red onions, heavy on the dressing, prolly ate 4 bites as did everybody at the table. Made me nauseous after a couple bites, then come some overcooked rolls they nobody touched , then comes your steak with French fries and onion rings! Wait what. I'm bring forced to eat French fries and onion rings with my steak ???? Where's the asparagus ? Where's the mashed potatoes? Where's anything ? I was served so many carbs at one sitting with no other options .. weirdest business plan I have ever heard of.. then we ordered a glass of wine with our steaks and it didn't arrive until the steaks were finished ., AND when the steaks were served we had no steak knives or forks, had a flag down a busboy to help us out , I was really disappointed with place, I wanted to like it, and to top it off they are charging twice what Saltgrass is charging .. ex. A 6 once filet at Star is 45.00 at saltgrass 27.00... and taste is better at Saltgrass.. Star ribeye cost at 10 ounces runs about 45.00 and Saltgrass is 12 ounces and 27.99... so your spending double at Star Rover and get no options for sides .. i would have to say I will be sticking with Saltgrass for a casual steak nite, better priced and better options for your sides. Also the cuts of meat at Star Rover are on the thin side , they are trying to cut costs of meat by using thinner cuts of meat they flash fry. So in conclusion, we told management about our experience and graciously took most of the items off the bill, that wasn't at all was I looking for we just wanted to share our experience, but that was very kind of them , not necessary I was happy to pay for it, but will I go back will I tell anybody to check it out? Prolly not. One very clever note., I like their A2 steak sauce.. you can't copy A1 but you sure can have an A2 sauceand one more thing when we told them we wanted vegetables with our steak they said 'order the cruditie with steak , and when we said we wanted mashed posted they said order the potatoe skins with your steak ... Holy. Cow. We had one of the best meals we've had in Houston. My husband and I are both foodies and eat out about three times a week. Start Rover had been on my radar since it opened so I was looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately we were supposed to go to another restaurant in Eado tonight but with the weather being totally horrific and the traffic being even worse, I knew we wouldn't make our reservation so I canceled it and we made a last-minute decision to try Star Rover. We were both totally blown away and it exceeded our expectations. First things first: those rolls! Soft and fluffy and buttery. I could've eaten two of them but I knew we had a big meal ahead of us so I refrained. We ordered the potato skins to start, and wow - epic!! it's like they took the insides of the potatoes out and whipped them into the fluffiest mashed potatoes you've ever tasted and stuffed them back into a potato skin with cheese and sour cream and green onions and they were like heaven on a plate. Next came the salad. Super fresh and delicious with blue cheese and the most delicious croutons I've ever tasted. Next I had the small filet and my husband had the ribeye. Literally ethereal. I've eaten at the best steakhouses in Houston and this absolutely rivaled them all. We were so stuffed at the end of the meal but my husband had to try the apple pie with ice cream and, while I did not think I could eat another bite, I probably ate 7 or 8 bites of that pie and ice cream. The soft serve ice cream is made in house and is super creamy and topped with a crumbly sweet and salty cookie and was just the perfect complement to the apple pie. We will definitely be back because now I need to come and have those pancakes I've been hearing so much about for brunch. Highly recommend and I doubt we will be eating here on rotation! read more

Food was good, but not great. Filet (7.5/10) was pretty good and very tender, although it was over cooked. Bread (9/10) and shrimp cocktail (8/10) were both extremely delicious! Potato skins (8/10) were good, I think reading online made my expectations unrealistic. For dessert we had apple pie à la mode (7.5/10) which was fine, I really enjoyed the ice cream. Martini (5/10) was not very good unfortunately. Inside was decorated very well and was very clean which I did appreciate. Our server was very kind however I felt service was slightly lacking and very slow. For the price point I expected service to be a little more attentive. My main issue was with valet. Very rude asking for tips. I asked if they had change for a 20 and said they have Cash App or Apple Pay. I did have change in my car since I only keep big bills in my wallet, but would not even let me get into my car before rudely demanding a tip. First, they used the same valet service that Superica did, which is a bad start to the evening. The food selection was pretty bare bones, steak or chicken (maybe one fish option?).. just different cuts of steak. All of the options, however, wildly over priced. The service was good, not great, considering the price point they're at. Food was fine, nothing worth writing home about. One of the ribeyes ordered medium rare came out well done. Salads are doused in bleu cheese. It's a bit hard to justify a 60+ dollar steak that comes with... onion rings. Bad ones at that. Best thing they had was the rolls, probably because they are doused in butter. I got the frozen espresso martini, which was just okay. It is more for aesthetics than drinking. After paying your very expensive dining bill, you're then sent on your way by the rude and very pushy valet service! For the price, go to literally any other steakhouse around for better service, more food options, better food and a wider variety of drinks. read more
