Hit the drive thru yesterday. The service was horrible! And the food was even worse! I now remember why I never eat there!

My food was greasy almost all of the paper on my grilled chicken was grease. The fries had absolutely 0 salty and were under cooked. Finally my shake had the cap on only half way so when it came to my possession it spilled all over my car. One last thing they forgot 2 orders of fries and two sodas horrible service. While I'm not a huge fan of Steak N'Shake's burgers or fries, I lvoe their desserts! It gives the best sugar rush. My fav menu item is the Very Berry Milk Shake (Strawberry if you didnt' know). It comes w/ whip cream and an oreo-like wafer cookie thing that tastes sOOOOOooooooOOOo good. Other favs include Oreo shake and the messy root beer floats. read more

I don't like giving negative reviews. It took forever for my taco salad. The whole table had their food and was nearly finished before mine came. They didn't even acknowledge the awkwardness of that. Everyone else's fries were cold. You can do better than that Steak 'n Shake. read more

I went here a couple times late at night. I was expecting the waitress to be tired and grumpy but she wasn't! The food was also pretty good.

I was a first time customer and heard a lot of great things, so I was excited. The food was fantastic, no question. The family really enjoyed it. I found the service a little lack-luster. Other than checking on how the food was, our server never visited our table. Even dropped the check with our main course because he didn't expect to do anything more with us. Our drinks ran out and we were interested in ordering shakes for desert. We sat there for 20 minutes after we finished eating hoping the server would come back so we could order shakes. When he finally did, he acted like it was a chore to continue serving. I'm sorry, but since tips are check total AND quality of service driven, you'd think he'd be stoked that we were increasing our check. I would recommend some server training. He got the minimum 15% tip from me. I usually tip 20% or more. read more

RACIAL INCIDENT AT STEAK AND SHAKE... I am a Black, married mother of 2, a school teacher (for the past 16 years), a Martial Arts instructor (my husband and I teach a program for the St. Petersburg Police Department), I teach Performing Arts, I'm a full-time college student, and my husband and I are both Ministers. I say all that to say, my time is precious, and I have very little to spare - but, this incident was so upsetting to me, that I have to take the time to let people know what happened. On Saturday, November 3rd, my husband and I went to a Steak and Shake, on Route 580, in Clearwater. It is one of our favorite spots to go to, with our own kids, or with some of our Karate students (either that location, or the one on US 19). It was crowded, so they sat us at the first available table - which was right by the front door. As we were seated - my husband went over to the claw machine, to see if he could get a stuffed animal out of the machine. Just as he came back to the table, with my prize, our waitress came over. She was an older Caucasian woman, perhaps in her 60's. She looked at my plush toy, and asked what it was. I told her it was a character named "Gerald", from a popular 90's show, called "Hey, Arnold!". I then went on to tell her how much I enjoyed the show, that he was one of my favorite characters on the show, and how thrilled I was that my husband (Bryant) had gotten it for me. We finished our food, we had our check, and were leisurely hanging out. This was our date night, and one of the only nights when we didn't have anything to do, or anywhere else to go. After taking our order, the waitress did not come back and check on us, until we had been finished for a while. When we went to the cash register to cash out, our waitress was sitting on a stool, at the counter - apparently - waiting to check out. We we're her last table. The cashier was having a hard time closing our check, and after several attempts, she says, "Oh, she closed your ticket and logged you in as a 'walk-out' " At this point, it was clear that she assumed - with us sitting so close to the door, and then sitting there for so long - that we intended to walk out on our bill! I was so insulted, and began to ask her why she did that, when the cashier said, "Oh, forget about it, we'll just get the manager to open it back up." As she turned to get him, she said, under her breath, "A few minutes more, and you would have gotten away with it." Just when I thought I couldn't be more insulted - it gets worse! At this point, the entrance area was getting very crowded, with people waiting to check out behind us, and new families that just came in to be seated. There were at least 12 people standing around us. Just as the manager was apologizing for the delay, and re-opening our check, our waitress (sitting 3 stools over, at the counter) yells, "I hope you enjoy your MONKEY!" I was floored! Everyone around us heard what she said, and looked at the plush toy I was holding. A hispanic woman next to me gasped out loud. Bryant slowly turned and looked at me, and I handed him the card, telling him to pay for the bill. He tried to stop me, as I walked over - but, I remained calm (I was praying, with every step I took over to her), and was going to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe, in her older years, her eyesight was bad. Maybe she was suffering from a delusional moment - because, SURELY, this woman was not bold enough to yell that out - in front of everyone!!! So, I go over to her, and lean close - to be discreet, JUST IN CASE she made a mistake. I said quietly, "You called my toy a monkey, but, it's a little black boy." She looked at me, and smiled, ruffling the hair on top of it's head, and said, "Oh, I know EXACTLY what it is. You see this...I CALL THEM MONKEYS!" And she smiled, daring me to say something. I said, "You are so lucky you are saying this to me, instead of somebody else, because there would be a HUGE scene." She said, smiling, "Yeah, I know what they are. Go home and enjoy your MONKEY". With that - so as not to completely loose my mind, and snap out on her - I walked over to Bryant, and went outside - telling him what was said. I didn't want to go back in, right then, because I was too angry. I knew the waitress was baiting me, trying to get me to blow up - therefore, justifying her statement that we're nothing but a bunch of animals (monkeys, to be exact). It took everything within me to walk away - but, I did. After going home and calling the manager, he was upset and apologetic, and said he was going to immediately call the general manager. The next morning, the GM calls, apologizing - but, is slightly hesitant to believe what I was saying. He said, "She never did that to me." I said, "Number one, you're not Black. And number 2, you're her boss." He said he would be back at work 3 days later, and would talk to her then, then call me in, to have her apologize to me directly . I never heard from back read more

My rating is a zero. I too wish I had looked at what other's had written about this location. The wait staff seem to be running in circles. As we sit and wait for our food. We saw two tables leave before getting their food because they waited to long. They left tables sitting with dirty dishes which was a bit gross to be sitting with tables all around. Waited 10 minutes to be seated while 1 waitress walked by multiple times ignoring us. Say down waited 20 minutes, no one came by to take drink orders or even acknowledge we were there. We walked and and won't be back. The 20 minutes we spent there, we heard arguments from the back, and every employee looked like they had no desire to be there at all, not friendly, not helpful, and the atmosphere was similar to one of a funeral home. read more

I've been to this location many times. It is always dirty, but this week the floor was filthy. Looked like it hadn't been washed in a while. I was anxious to try the new french dip sandwich. The bun was cut off center so the top was thin and the bottom was super thick. That made it difficult to eat and do the dipping. My husband got the Frisco Melt and the meat was thrown on the bun off center so he ate bun only with no meat for half his sandwich. Seems like more effort needs to be made in the kitchen as well as the cleaning staff. I will not be back to this location. read more

Not sure why I've eaten here as many times as I have. The service is always pathetic and the staff doesn't even take time to clean tables consistently. During the entire time I was there tonight there wasn't a moment where all the tables were clean. The place had a few customers but definitely wasn't busy at all, and there were over four tables that didn't get touched the entire night. It's just gross and unsanitary to leave tables dirty for that long. I've eaten here many times with my friends because it's one of the only places open late at night, but cleanliness and a lack of service is an issue every time we eat here. I have never had a good experience at this location and hope that they will get better management or I will refuse to eat here again. If you're considering going here, you'd have a better time going home or getting McDonald's and sitting in the parking lot than eating at this location. read more

The service here was complete crap. We waited for over an hour and counting for our food. People came in after us and received their food before us, took about 20 minutes for our sodas to come to us. Stopped at a S&S in Kissimmee for some shakes. Was very impressed with the service and quality of the shake. The next day we returned home and decided to do another trio of shakes. Stopped at the Clearwater store and found the service was slow, the shake had a horrible presentation. Looked like it had set for ten minutes on the counter prior to me receiving it. Which could account for the slow service. When I complained about how bad it looked, I was told "that's the way we do it". Won't be going back! read more

Waited in line 20 minutes because of a messed up order in front of us. Girl at the window was clueless of how to do her job. Cashed us out on the wrong order even though I told her it wasn't ours and waited 10 minutes on a refund. Our milkshakes were watery and all of the food was cold and wasn't good at all. The milkshake was so watery I found the cherry at the bottom. The cheese especially looked disgusting couldn't eat the steak burger. Terrible service awful food. Not returning here. read more

Great food after a night out at 3am. The steakburgers are delicious. The chili cheese fries are tasty and everything is always made fresh. So if you are impatient, this place isn't for you. If there is a line you are going to wait 15+ minutes for food sometimes. But most people know that going in. It's fast food so I won't rate it high. It is greasier than other fast food places that I have been and probably wouldn't eat it other than at 3 am. Not because it isn't delicious, just because I usually don't eat fast food. read more

I will never go back to this particular SandS. After reading the reviews I was sad but glad that the things I am about to say have not happened to me only. Yesterday my daughter and I went there to eat, at her request. I had bad experiences previously so was hesitant. We got there and waited several minutes to be acknowledged and seated. After we were seated not one person came to our table or acknowledged us. After at least 5 min of watching 5 different employees go around us without acknowledgement, I set my timer, literally, on my phone. As we sat there we watched 9 other tables be seated AND helped. Also watched tables being cleared. The people next to us commented to us in disbelief of no service for us. No acknowledgement. When 10 min had gone by on my timer, I had to reach out for the next person passing far from our table to ask for the manager. Another 5 minutes before he got to us. I told him nicely what had happened. I told him of ALL my previous bad experiences there and that I would never again come to this SandS. He quietly apologized and offered the meal on them but by that point I wanted nothing to do with is establishment. We did not accept his offer. I do not know if the owner's aware of the bad service or if they do not care. On a previous visit the cooks pants were literally across the middle of his butt, when our food finally arrived my burger had a hair in it. We left feeling to disgusted to even finish our meal. That was a visit that caused me not to go there for a very long time. Sad we will NEVER go to this location again!! read more

I used to love this place, but lately and especially today, the drive thru experience was far below par.The cashier seemed hard of hearing for one. I thought she said $5.51 so I gave her a $20 and 51 cents and she handed me 90 cents. I said oh, I thought you said $5.51, (and I had to repeat it), she said $5.61. So gave her the change back plus a dime and she reluctantly gave me a dollar bill. That wasn't so bad until I tasted the fries. They were dry and cold, so I told her the fries were cold, I had to repeat what I said 3 times. She finally stared at me and said sorry about that. I came in around 2am to get a carry out order with my boyfriend. The dining room was a mess - napkins on the floor, only two clean tables that we could see, and the floor was grey. There were only two occupied tables and a few people at the bar. We waited for a while for anyone to take our order despite it being so slow and there were three employees that we could see. The guy that helped us was very friendly when he finally took our order, he was a nice man with dark hair, but he didn't know how to ring up a malt. One of the customers? at the bar told him how. He apologized about the wait and something about a truck before he disappeared for almost fifteen minutes! It shouldn't take fifteen minutes for some burgers and fries and malts. This is the second time I've come around 2am to find a bare bones crew, the dining room a mess, and service took forever. The normal lady that waited on us all the time when we come in on Fridays isn't there anymore, I guess she quit? Which is a shame because she always remembered our order and she was very attentive despite all the work it seemed she always had to catch up on. They make the late night servers do the drive thru too and it's terrible when you want good service because sometimes the server gets stuck doing orders over there and you have to wait forever for shakes or refills. I would recommend coming at an earlier time because service is slow and the store is a mess. My boyfriend and I love the food but I think we won't be coming back for a while until they figure out how to better serve the late night customers like me and my boyfriend. read more
