I was recently in the Countryside FL location - Clearwater, FL This had to be the filthiest restaurant I've ever been in, the white tile floors are black with grime - I couldn't even guess the last time they were washed. Tables had food under them smushed into the floor and this is after the tops were cleaned off (this was multiple - not just one or two.) The roof obviously needs to be replaced there are stains on almost every ceiling tile. The bathroom smelled so bad, not bodily odors just a sour dirty smell. I have contacted the board of health...this place is that bad. read more

First time hearing about and eating at a Steak and Shake since I am not from the South and absolutely loved it! The service was fast, the cost of food was inexpensive, and the burgers tasted so fresh. I had the Western BBQ burger and loved it! I liked that the patties were thin and had a little bit of crispiness around the edges. My husband had the cheese steak burger and also really enjoyed it. We also ordered shakes to go which were delicious. My only complaint were the fries...I'm not a big fan of very thin fries...wish they had a little more substance to them. I have been a huge fan of this particular location. However, I had a very unsatisfactory experience yesterday. The double cheese burger sandwich that I received @ 3:00 PM had been staged and not freshly made. The meat patties were dry...no moisture at all. The bun was hard in spots on both sides. I get down to Florida 3-4 times a year to visit my parents. We don't have Steak N Shake in New Jersey (well, apparently there is a new SNS in Paramus, but I'd never seen it as of this writing) so I'd never even thought to stop in at one of the 5 gazillion Steak N Shakes that is passed during any one of those many trips. My wife is a Sarasota, FL transplant and begged me for Steak N Shake a few years back. We went to the one on Dale Mabry Highway near Tampa and it was... wow... cruddy. I hadn't been back since, but I tried again. Glad that I did. I remember the "steak" patties being veereyyy thin, so I ordered the "triple" with fries and slaw. My wife ordered a custom shake concoction, a double with fries, and we split a large chili-cheese fries. Lunch was delivered quickly and BOOM! They turned my opinion around 180 degrees. Three (albeit thin) sizzling patties on a fresh bun, loaded with pickles and onions, lettuce and tomatoes. I added a shot of ketchup and a quick squirt of mustard (love me my mustard on a burger) and I was SET! French fries were thinner than McDonalds... real "shoestrings" but tasty enough. Firstly the lady working the drive threw didn't get one of my meals on the order even though she repeated everything and still forgot it and then when I told her she was rude for no reason and they weren't even offering to go get the meal I didn't get they were just expecting me to leave, then they had us pull forward saying they would bring it out, so we waited 10 mins we never got are other meal so I went inside and the cook gave it to us apologizing saying his staff sucks so overall not a good experience also didn't have chicken cause of shortage and the drive thru wait was like 20 mins there were only 3 cars ahead it was kinda stupid, plus I got sick after eating that food. WOW! I never write reviews so for me to write one it's really bad! Worst customer service and sanitation standards! I go through the drivethru order and am behind 2 cars takes about 10 minutes or so to get to the window. Pull up to the window sitting there for 2 minutes or so before the manager comes and takes my payment I give exact change so he takes my money and no one comes back to the window for 10 minutes. Now there is a young black guy at the window pops his head out doesn't say anything and then shuts the window and doesn't come back for another 5 minutes. At this point there's now 6 cars behind me when there were none when I got to the window. The young black guy comes back and says " I gotta wait for my manager to come open my drawer" to which I reply that I have already paid for my food I just need the food. He shuts the windows and disappears for another 5 minutes and comes back with a bag of food that's incorrect. I say I didn't order Parm fries I wanted large fries so he takes the bag back and slams the window shut again. I can hear the staff arguing in the kitchen about it when even on my receipt it says lArge fries nothing about parm fries. He comes back a couple minutes later with the same bag but two new fries, I ask him if the other 3 sandwiches are good and he shrugs his shoulders. I said "you didn't ensure the rest of the food was right since other parts were incorrect?" He replies "Nah, what you want me to check all Your food for you?" I was appalled and said " well yeah if something wasn't right I'm gonna double check that everything else is." He slams the window again and comes back a minute later and I asked for his manager. A minute or so passes and he comes to the window and the kid is jumping over his shoulder in the background as I'm explaining what happened. And how right after I asked to speak with him the young man say "man fuck that bitch" and all he said was "we'll have a talk" I got the sense that the management sets that attitude and morale like that and he didn't care. I had to tell him i didn't tell him because I wanted my money back or anything for free but because he should know. I am a bartender and have been for 10 years and never spoken to anyone like that in my whole career. Despicable service and subpar food The fries were pretty much cold and the cheeseburger that was for someone else I was told was disgusting. The lettuce on my burger was bad and brown like you're serving food that can get people sick. The drive thru at night takes 30 minutes at least and all you end up with is hard cold fries and half ass cooked food. I'm done going to this location especially with the trashy staff. We first went to the one on US Highway 19 in Clearwater. We were there for 20 minutes with 2 other tables occupied with one waitress walking around chatting on a cell phone and the other waitress chatting for 10 minutes with customers after taking their order and looking at us. Then she disappeared. As did we. We are now at this one. We were seated, order taken and drinks in front of us in less than 5 minutes. Definitely worth the longer drive from home. My relationship to Steak N Shake goes back to when I was just a few years old. Our family is from IL where Steak N Shake started in 1934, just one year after my dad was born.. So it's not just that I grew up eating at SnS, my dad, mom, and lots of relatives have eaten here for decades. Growing up my dad's work required lots of travel, and often the whole family joined him for the trip. Regularly my dad would take extraordinarily wide detours, up to 50 miles or more, on trips through the state just to make sure our trip would include a stop at one of their restaurants. We would be driving along, wondering why we had chosen this new route when, he'd say, "Wow, look at this. Thank goodness we stumbled on a Steak N Shake!" SnS served up the chili, thinly grilled burgers and skinny fries like he always liked, and eating on china plates with silverware at least up'd our fast food stop to something more than just fast food. So, if in my Dad's honor alone, eating at Steak N Shake still holds a place for me. I've eaten at this SnS easily 10 times over the past 4 years from lunches to 4 in the morning, and the food has been consistently good. My favorite has always been chili 3 way with onions, and the dish here is usually very good. SnS chili has a unique blend of flavor and spice that I don't often find, and it's not even my favorite style, but it's still usually tasty. Service is usually pretty good, but can be spotty sometimes in the middle of the night when the staff is sparse and the crowd is occasionally large. He was the only waiter, and was also handling the take away line, but he was courteous, and we never felt neglected. No matter how busy it got he checked on us multiple times. I have eaten at this restaurant many times over the years. The taste of the food varies from time to time but is mostly consistent. Last night my family and I ate here and we all ordered from the $4 burger menu. For the most part the burgers were okay, not exceptional. I watched the cooks as I paid at the register because I had plenty of time to watch, will explain later, they are smashing the meat down with a spatula when they cook the patties. This causes all the fat to be pushed from the meat and thus explains why the burger has a somewhat leathery texture. They really need to educate the cooks. The reason I gave one star was not because the food tasted bad, it was because the service was so bad. I have a family of four; here is what happened. We entered the establishment at the same time as two other parties around 8:30pm, not very crowded. We were shown to our table first. This should have been an indicator, the table was not cleaned off and they had to clear it and wipe it down before seating us. I don't understand why they did not show us to the booth by the window as that one was already to go. Okay, so after a few minutes of a clear and wipe down and bunch of I apologizes, we take our seats. I watch and see that one of the other parties is seated across from us and the last party was seated on the other side of the restaurant. Our server comes over after about five minutes and is looking to take our order. We told her we needed a few more minutes and before I could finish, the chick turns around and leaves. Um, normally you can take a drink order and then come back to take the meal order. She does neither and she disappears for a good 15 minutes. I watch the last party that came in after us and they placed their order and was served their food before our server ever shows up to take our order. We finally place our drink order and food order. About five minutes later the other party that was seated next to us gets their food. We still have nothing. So a good 20 minutes go by and all we have gotten at this point is our drinks. Oh and for the drinks my kids just got water and my wife and I got Arnold Palmer's (Half sweet tea / half lemonade). Our server gets it completely wrong and brings us half sweet tea and half unsweetened tea. I had to educate her as to what the drink was and she laughs and says a bunch of sorry's and gets the correct drinks. The party that was seated on the other side of the restaurant has finished their meal and gets up and leaves. Our food still has not made it our table. My daughter notices our server behind us and stares at her. She comes over to our table and asks if we would like anything, like she was being flagged down or something. My wife and I, in unison, say "yes we would like our food." Our server smiles and says she will check on our order. Another 10 minutes go by and the party next to us in now finished their meal and are leaving and our food finally arrives. We are annoyed but we begin eating. Like I said the food was okay, nothing great. About half way through eating my meal, my drink runs dry and so does my daughters and my wife's is getting close. I place our cups on the outside edge of the table indicating that perhaps we could use a refill. Our server walked by my table no less than three times and just ignored us. I had had enough. I threw my cups on the floor to force her to come to my table, clean up the mess and get new drinks. She brought me a new drink and my daughter some more water. My other daughter and my wife did not ever get anything refilled. So we finish eating and my kids wanted to get milkshakes, I talked them out of them and said we could go to Starbucks instead because our server would take another 20 minutes until we tracked her down. My kids agreed and we decided to leave. I went up to pay for our dinner. Another server who is working the cash registers is talking to the customers ahead of me that are paying for their meal. I am not even exaggerating a little bit here; they hold a six minute conversation about how she the server is working at this establishment instead of going to college. After she finally finishes up with that annoyance, she gives me a bunch of sorry's for having to wait. I left a zero tip and wrote on the receipt that the service sucked. Perhaps a manager will see it, but I really doubt anything will be done about it because these servers are all taking their cue from the manager who obviously doesn't care what goes on inside the restaurant. She gets paid either way, right. Take my advice, do not eat here. McDonald's will give you better service then this place. Red Robin is just across the street, a little more expensive but way better food and service. Cheers PS. I never said a harsh word to our server. I did not make any comments at all. Posting for my friend. RACIAL INCIDENT AT STEAK AND SHAKE... On Saturday, November 3rd, my husband and I went to a Steak and Shake, on Route 580, in Clearwater. It is one of our favorite spots to go to, with our own kids, or with some of our Karate students (either that location, or the one on US 19). It was crowded, so they sat us at the first available table - which was right by the front door. As we were seated - my husband went over to the claw machine, to see if he could get a stuffed animal out of the machine. Just as he came back to the table, with my prize, our waitress came over. She was an older Caucasian woman, perhaps in her 60's. She looked at my plush toy, and asked what it was. I told her it was a character named "Gerald", from a popular 90's show, called "Hey, Arnold!". I then went on to tell her how much I enjoyed the show, that he was one of my favorite characters on the show, and how thrilled I was that my husband (Bryant) had gotten it for me. We finished our food, we had our check, and were leisurely hanging out. This was our date night, and one of the only nights when we didn't have anything to do, or anywhere else to go. After taking our order, the waitress did not come back and check on us, until we had been finished for a while. When we went to the cash register to cash out, our waitress was sitting on a stool, at the counter - apparently - waiting to check out. We we're her last table. The cashier was having a hard time closing our check, and after several attempts, she says, "Oh, she closed your ticket and logged you in as a 'walk-out' " At this point, it was clear that she assumed - with us sitting so close to the door, and then sitting there for so long - that we intended to walk out on our bill! I was so insulted, and began to ask her why she did that, when the cashier said, "Oh, forget about it, we'll just get the manager to open it back up." As she turned to get him, she said, under her breath, "A few minutes more, and you would have gotten away with it." Just when I thought I couldn't be more insulted - it gets worse! At this point, the entrance area was getting very crowded, with people waiting to check out behind us, and new families that just came in to be seated. There were at least 12 people standing around us. Just as the manager was apologizing for the delay, and re-opening our check, our waitress (sitting 3 stools over, at the counter) yells, "I hope you enjoy your MONKEY!" I was floored! Everyone around us heard what she said, and looked at the plush toy I was holding. A hispanic woman next to me gasped out loud. Bryant slowly turned and looked at me, and I handed him the card, telling him to pay for the bill. He tried to stop me, as I walked over - but, I remained calm (I was praying, with every step I took over to her), and was going to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe, in her older years, her eyesight was bad. Maybe she was suffering from a delusional moment - because, SURELY, this woman was not bold enough to yell that out - in front of everyone!!! So, I go over to her, and lean close - to be discreet, JUST IN CASE she made a mistake. I said quietly, "You called my toy a monkey, but, it's a little black boy." She looked at me, and smiled, ruffling the hair on top of it's head, and said, "Oh, I know EXACTLY what it is. You see this...I CALL THEM MONKEYS!" And she smiled, daring me to say something. I said, "You are so lucky you are saying this to me, instead of somebody else, because there would be a HUGE scene." She said, smiling, "Yeah, I know what they are. Go home and enjoy your MONKEY". With that - so as not to completely loose my mind, and snap out on her - I walked over to Bryant, and went outside - telling him what was said. I didn't want to go back in, right then, because I was too angry. I knew the waitress was baiting me, trying to get me to blow up - therefore, justifying her statement that we're nothing but a bunch of animals (monkeys, to be exact). It took everything within me to walk away - but, I did. After going home and calling the manager, he was upset and apologetic, and said he was going to immediately call the general manager. The next morning, the GM calls, apologizing - but, is slightly hesitant to believe what I was saying. He said, "She never did that to me." I said, "Number one, you're not Black. And number 2, you're her boss." He said he would be back at work 3 days later, and would talk to her then, then call me in, to have her apologize to me directly . I never heard from back from him. After that, he never returned my calls or messages, so I called the corporate office. The woman I spoke to sounded appalled, and took my report. The next day, I got a "do not respond", auto-response message, saying they were sorry my visit wasn't up to my standards - like my food was cold! They said they would contact the regional office, to address that particular store - and I have never heard back from them again. read more

Pretty good Steak and Shake. I would have given 4 stars if my server had not made mistakes with 2 of 7 orders at our table. The orders were replaced pretty quickly but my companion and I got our hot food about when the rest of our group was finishing theirs. Because of the nature of the fries (which I really like) they have to hit the table quickly after plating and our server accomplished this well. This one in Florida cook your food to order not ahead of time. They make their shakes at time of order not after your food has already been delivered and almost gone. I frequent this location and i really have no complaints about the food or service. i will say I'm disappointed they've turned into a kiosk restaurant and don't have waiters and waitresses anymore, and they got rid of the 4 under $4 meals and raised their prices. this was one of my go-to cheap eats but now they're about the same price as similar fast food places. sometimes the drive thru takes awhile but i always get fresh food so i don't mind the wait. still hoping one day they'll change their fries, they're pretty good fresh but get cold within minutes. read more

Promotional meals, gone. Salads, gone. Hand scooped milkshakes...gone. Heath bar milk shakes gone. Minimal staff exposure. Restaurant was clean, but not the same milkshake experience. Just ate there from the drive thru. It's fast food, but very enjoyable. The banana shake was divine. Although we arrived at 12am (or later) all the food was fresh and tasty. It appeared that the dining room was also open (we got there between 12am-1am now that I think about it). The fries are really thin...which means they cool off quicker too, so eat em fast.
